With some of the comments around it seems that the US has what it deserves: an incompetent Administration, a melting financial system, no friends around the world ....Maybe the US is a more technologically advanced nation than the rest....but look at your current state of affairs. So what difference does it make? Technology without wisdom amounts to nothing.

As to Americans not knowing a thing about Spain...well maybe that is the reason why Spain is the second destination for US students learning foreign languages abroad and Spanish is the most demanded language at your universities. Most probably those not knowing about Spain while insulting us in this forum are those either staying at home or those without even a basic education. That is their problem, not ours.

.As to Spain being a backward nation, well maybe that is the reason why you came begging for our help to get rid of the Britons. And to think that we were so naive as to come to your rescue and help you beating the English. We should have known better... with friends like you who needs enemies.

Lighten up, the point of this isn't about Spain ,it is about the fact that it doesn't matter what bizzare facts a president knows but what his views on the world and policy are. Umm, and there appear to be a lot of pissed of Spaniards on here. No offense but Spain isn't hugely technologically advanced, and the exchange students at MIT mostly appear to be asian. Oh, and responding to an old comment on here. When the US was attacked on 9/11 on of the reasons given by the terrorists was the reconquista in Spain. So I figure that America's relationship with Spain had something to do with the attack. In response Spain pulled the millitary out of Iraq, blamed a terrorist incedent on their relationship with the US (although it seems to me that Spain was attacked cause ,umm, Bin Laden said he hated it cause of the reconquista), and spit on Americans who spent thousands of dollars to fly over and see their country. Yes, the majority of Americans don't know a thing about Spain and Spaniards had better hope it stays that way or they might be the one's getting spit on.

    To Floridave, again
¿ space programms? do you ever know that the Director of the European Space Agency is a Spaniard? Do you even now that Spain is one of the few countries to have its own satellite industry? Do you even know that in four years Spain will be the only European country to have simultaneously an optic based and a radar based satellite in orbit? Do you even know that we have put two astronauts in space? Do you even know that some of the best long range telescopes and astrophysical scientific teams are in the Canary Islands and in Sierra Nevada, Spain? As to the technological prowess, well, wrong again. May be you are deaf, because the most advanced solar plants and eolic farms in the USA are ran by Spanish companies with Spanish investment and Spanish technology..... Oh dear, so much ignorance.

Trevor Lyman is the man who organized the Ron Paul money bombs.

One Lyman money bomb raised $4 million in one day.

Another raised $6 million in one day.

Now, Lyman is at it again.

Lyman wants to hold a third party debate in New York City.

Lyman was inspired by Ron Paul's press conference a couple of weeks ago.

At that press conference, Paul called on his followers to ditch the two major parties and throw their support to one of the independent or third party candidates.

So, we all need to support Lyman's push for an alternative debate now.

If Lyman gets 10,000 pledges by October 8, he and the other sponsors will organize a debate in New York City.

All major candidates -- Nader, Barr, McKinney, Baldwin, Obama and McCain will be invited.

Already, with no publicity, Lyman has close to 1,000 pledgers.

    So go to thirdpartyticket.com now.

And add your name to the pledge list.

You don't have to say how much you are pledging.

    Just add your name.

The Commission on Presidential Debates won't let Ralph debate.

So, let's get behind Trevor Lyman's push now.

    Let's crank it up.

    And get it done.

    Onward to November

    The Nader Team

    PS:
Third partyticket.com is being sponsored by Lyman's group breakthematrix.com, the Chicago-based Free and Equal Elections, and Open Debates.

    To Floridabe,
Some things that Spain has contributed to the world in the last two centuries:

    - Goya, Dalí, Picasso to name just a few insignificant artists... ( though ignorants like you can not tell a painting from a TV screen)
    - Ramón y Cajal, discoverer of the neurons ( though people like you do not use them)
    - The defeat of Napoleon thanks to the 1808 Spanish uprising and the subsequent guerrilla warfare....without us the US would be a French colony and you would be eating french fries for breakfast.

So Palin flubbed one interview? Obama flubbed many before he improved his skills. It was only weeks ago that Obama said there are 57 states. The MSM ignored this, and many other, Obama flubs because they are pro-Obama and it is potically incorrect to imply that he is stupid. Palin has more common sense, grit, and intelligence in one finger than the affirmative action Obama has in his whole body. MSM are happy they found an achilles heel in one interview but the real American people are not buying it. The interview looks perfectly fine to them. Besides, it is the experienced McCain who is the top of the ticket, not Palin.

How can you think about the world without knowledge about its countries? I find this article contradictory and borderline republican propaganda. I would like to assume that someone who is elected president of the United States has at least, some general knowledge of geography and history. But then again, I come from the old world. As a Spaniard and soon to be citizen of the United States, and just as important, as an educated journalist, I am just relieved that I doubt I will ever see a title such as the one Haass or his editor selected for the article in any respected media in Europe. If intelligent and educated minds in this country can be this shortsighted, I understand the reasons why middle america ignorance is ridiculed around the world.

I cannot believe that someone who claims to be the President of the Council on Foreign Relations can make such an ignorant statement. You cannot pretend to look brilliant while at the same time you are suporting such a lack of knowledge of world geography and geopolitics. That's sad. I am Spanish too, studying at MIT, and I thank God for the huge difference of the American people that I have met here and their awful current administration. An intelligent person would have never stated such an ignorant title, that's even worse if you are suposed to be in charge of any Foreing Relations... SAD.

Spain is also the country in which the former oposition leader, now our president, sit down when your flag and a representation of your arm forces passed in front of him. Now, he and the people who voted him wonder and claim to the heaven because president Bush don't want to have anything to do with us.

Hi, I'm spaniard, yes from Spain, a little country located in South-Europe, south from France,Spain is a member of the NATO and the European Union, who supported your war against IRAK, when our ex-prime minister Mr Aznar was one of the best international friends of your prime minister, Mr Bush, and Mr Blair . Your great mistake in foreing policy is that war. Because there were no massive destruction weapons and that war was only for the PETROL in IRAK.
The consequence of that war in our country was the biggest attack in Spain against civil people, in Madrid. Could you remenber 3/11/2004 ? I remember every day 200 people died. The most of Spanish people think USA is our ally, but we think your prime minister Mr Bush is idiot, and the attack in Madrid was a fault of Mr Aznar, Mr Bush and Mr Blair, that's the fact. But we love USA and your culture

Hello Haass , I don´t care where is Spain either, basically because I don´t mind what country discovered America, or the 8 economic power in the world or the main speaker of Latin America even being in Europe, oh YES Europe, or unfortunately the third country (in the same pack that states and UK), which went to Irak with the lies of Mister Bush. Really ? Yes .

I pass you a link where you can find Spain if you care, but if you don´t , i don´t care man of short memory.

Do you have any idea what country is buying many banks in California, Texas, and Florida, as well as which country got the bid for the most transported toll road in the United States? Oh, wait, you´re the president of the Council of Foreign Relations, of course you do. I love being an American living in Spain and seeing the governor of Florida calling Spain a republic. Is the US a monarchy? hmmm... oh yeah, knowledge doesn´t matter. Who cares! Do you think if these guys aren´t familiar with governmental institutions in the First World we should trust their judgement on the cold war, Vietnam, and Iraq? Come on... We thought we were the experts in investments and banking, now the world is laughing in our face. Why? For lack of knowledge and an overload of pride. We will have a lot to learn concerning international relations and we had better make it a priority soon....

  • Posted By: mnash @ 09/25/2008 4:18:51 PM

Well, Sir, I beg to differ with you. I want a president who knows who our allies are and not one who doesn't know where Spain is, and says he is going to send troops to Spain. Doesn't he know they fought in Iraq for the United States or has he really lost it?

IT SOUNDS LIKE A FAIRY TALE...HOWEVER, LET CALL ON OBAMA ON IT. IF IT IS TRUE, THAN WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT...IF IT IS NOT TRUE, THEN ......NEVER MIND!

IN MY OPINION, THE FACT THAT McAIN HAS MILITARY EXPERIENCE DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE WILL BE THE TYPE OF PRESIDENT AMERICA NEED AT THIS DAY AND AGE. WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO OUR ELDERLY, I AM ONE OF THEM, I AM 62, HE IS 72 AND COUNTING.

BEING IN THE MILITARY DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT A PERSON WILL BE A GREAT PRESDIENT. ONE OF THE BEST PRESDIENTS WE HAVE HAD , IN MY OPINION IS BILL CLINTON. HE DID NOT SERVE IN THE MILITARY. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I DO NOT THINK LINCOLN HAD ANY MILITARY EXPERIENCE.

HOWEVER, ALLOW ME TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE STRAIGHT TALK, AS McCAIN SOMETIMES SAYS,???

I FOUGHT IN THE VIET NAM WAR IN 1967 IN THE MARINE CORP INFANTRY. I SAW THE HOROR OF WAR. I SAW MY BUDDIES GET KILLED BEFORE MY EYES AS PIECES OF HUMAN FLESH HIT ME IN THE FACE. I GOT INTO SOME FIREFIGHTS FACE TO FACE WITH THE NORTH VIETNAMESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE DEFENDING THEIR LAND AND SAW US AS INVADORS. MY SQUAD WALKED RIGHT INTO AN AMBUSH KILIING ZONE WHERE I LOST ONE GOOD FRIEND FROM MY FIRE TEAM. I SHOT AND KILLED TWO YOUNG ENEMY SOLDIERS AFTER I WOUNDED THEM WITH A GRENADE.

UP TO THIS DAY, I STILL CRY WHEN I AM ALONE WHEN I HAVE A FLASHBACK. I DO NOT EXPECT MANY PERSONS TO CARE OR VALUE WHAT I AND OTHER MARINES DID FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE WAR AGAINST COMMUNISM. ASK ME AND OTHER MARINES IF THEY STILL FEEL THE PAIN, YES WE DO. I AM PRETTY SURE THAT McCAIN ALSO FEEL SIMILAR EMOTIONS SINCE HE WAS A PILOT.

I WAS AN ELECTED JUDGE IN A COUNTY IN TEXAS FOR TWENTY YEARS. HOWEVER, I NEVER LEAD ANYONE TO BELIEVE THAT BECAUSE I HAD FOUGHT IN THE INFANTRY IN THE WAR, I WAS A GOOD JUDGE. LIKEWISE, I DO NOT THINK THAT BECAUSE McCAIN WAS IN THE MILITARY, HE WILL MAKE A GREAT PRESIDENT; ON THE OTHER HAND, I THINK HE IS A HIGH RISK BECAUSE OF HIS TEMPERMENT AND HIS AGE. I BELIEVE THAT McCAIN AND I ARE JUST VETERANS WHO DID OUR DUTY???AS EXPECTED AND WE SHOULD LEAVE IT AT THAT. THE REAL HEROS ARE THOSE THAT DIED IN COMBANT!...VOTE DEMOCRAT!...WHEN THE DEMOCRATS WIN???THE PEOPLE WIN!

It is absolutely necessary for the President and VP to know about the rest of the world and world leaders. They need to know who their allies are as well as enemies. Ican just see McCain and Palin or is it Palin and McCain? isolating allies: Mcain because he can't seem to remember salient points from one minute to the next and Palin because they have different views than her. I just see those two starting a mass of little wars with the possibility of a world war III conglagration.

As to the whole running mate thing, that freudian slip Palin made, once they get to the White House, she only has to say "BOO" to McCain, he fall over and her and the "first dude" will be running the country! Oh what a happy day that wil be for America. All I can say is "Welcome to the Third world with those three in charg!"

The mainstream media have gone over the line and are now straight-out propagandists for the Obama campaign. While they have been liberal and blinkered in their worldview for decades, in 2007-08, for the first time, the major media consciously are covering for one candidate for president and consciously are knifing the other. This is no longer journalism; it is simply propaganda. And as a result, we are less than seven weeks away from possibly electing a president who has not been thoroughly or even halfway honestly presented to the country by our watchdogs -- the press. The image of Obama that the press has presented to the public is not a fair approximation of the real man. The mainstream media ruthlessly and endlessly repeat any McCain gaffes while ignoring Obama gaffes. You have to go to weird little Web sites to see all the stammering and stuttering that Obama needs before getting out a sentence fragment or two. But all you see on the networks is an eventually clear sentence from Obama. You don't see Obama's ludicrous gaffe that Iran is a tiny country and no threat to us. Nor his 57 American states gaffe. Nor his forgetting, if he ever knew, that Russia has a veto in the U.N. Nor his whining and puerile "come on" when he is being challenged. But worse than all the unfair and distorted reporting and image projecting are the shocking gaps in Obama's life that are not reported at all. The major media simply have not reported on Obama's two years at New York's Columbia University, where, among other things, he lived a mere quarter-mile from former terrorist Bill Ayers. Later, they both ended up as neighbors and associates in Chicago. Obama denies more than a passing relationship with Ayers. Should the media be curious? In only two weeks, the media have focused on all the colleges Gov. Palin has attended, her husband's driving habits 20 years ago, and the close criticism of the political opponents Gov. Palin had when she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. But in two years, they haven't bothered to see how close Obama was with the terrorist Ayers. Nor have the media paid any serious attention to Obama's rise in Chicago politics. How did honest Obama rise in the famously sordid Chicago political machine with the full support of Boss Daley? Despite the great -- and unflattering -- details on Obama's Chicago years presented in David Freddoso's new book on Obama, the mainstream media continue to ignore both the facts and the book.

THE McCPALIN TICKET TO NOEWHERE WILL GET TO NOWHERE IN WORLD AFFAIRS CONSIDERING THAT PALIN IS WILLING TO "PERHAPS" ATTACK THE RUSSIANS IF THEY INVADE GEORGIA AND McMORE-OF-THE-SAME CAN NOT REMEMBER WHO THE NAME OF THE PM OF SPAIN.

PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE FACT THAT PALIN IS NOW AN EXPERT IN FOREIGN POLICY JUST BECAUSE SHE MET WITH A FEW FOREIGN LEADERS AT THE UNITED NATIONS. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE JUST ADMITTED THAT SHE IS NOT QUALIFIED AND IS INEXPERIENCED, NOT ONLY IN FOREIGN POLICY, BUT IN DOMESTIC ISSUES SUCH AS THE ECONOMY.
THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT PALIN IS WASHED OUT: SHE HAS BEEN USED AND ABUSED AS A DISTRACTION BY SLEEZY McCAIN. THEY USED THE FACT THAT SHE WAS A RINKY DINK MAYOR OF WASILLA, A POPULATION OF LESS THAN 8000 AND A GOVERNOR OF ALASKS, A STATE WITH A POPULATION OF LESS THAN 800,000. BULL #@%&! SHE IS NOT QUALIFIED TO BE A DOG CATCHER. BUT, THE PLAN WAS TO MAKE HER LOOK LIKE AN OUTSTANDING VP CANDIDATE TO ATTRACT THE WOMEN VOTE. THIS IS MY COMMENTARY AND MY OPINION. WHAT? AM I GOING TO VOTE FOR THE McPALIN TICKET TO NOWHERE?....HELL NO! THANKS, BUT NO THANKS!
