I think what is most aggravating to me is that McCain has dishonored himself and this country by having Palin as one step away from the Presidency. He is 72 as am I and we all know what that means. I have lost any respect I might have had for him for doing this irresponsible thing. We do not need a 72 year old Maverick in the white house but we do need a thoughtful and intelligent person who has good judgement.

She makes Dan Quayle look like a genius.
I tire of those who disparage the education of Christian right politicians. I remember this being done with Ronald Reagan. The left was aghast that an actor who had starred with a monkey would possibly control nuclear weapons. I have twenty years of college education including Harvard and a medical doctorate and it has never caused certain groups to respect my belief in the God of the Bible. They would not like a Christian neurosurgeon either.
Has Sam Harris forgotten the massive emphasis that Barack Obama has placed on his own Christian faith over the last year and a half? In the midst of his rants about how ridiculous and even dangerous it is to have a president who believes that God can and will inspire him to the correct action, or one that even seeks God's counsel at all, has he forgotten that Senator Obama believes the same as any other Christian, that God grants wisdom and inspiration to those who diligently seek it? Mister Harris claims that Governor Palin's views are particularly dangerous because of the specific church she attends, stating that you "can learn something about a person by the company she keeps". Again, does he apply this standard to Obama, whose personal pastor for more than twenty years has given such inflammatory sermons that they don't even need to be repeated? And what about Joe Biden, a Catholic who not only believes in a personal God, but also that Pope Benedict receives direct communications from Him as a matter of course? Can Mister Harris support ANY ticket in this election?
Even though I'm a big McCain supporter I tend to agree with your analysis, although I think you're a bit harsh (she does have 90% approval rating 2 yrs into her term so she must be doing at least a little something right). What baffles me is that you make the case that Palin is not qualified to be president (which she's not, but she's also not running for it) yet seem to imply that Barack Obama somehow is. Are you kidding me? So you're saying that in order to avoid an unqualified VP we should vote for an unqualified President? You know you can't make the argumetn with any integrity whatsoever that Sen Obama is qualified to be President. That's the beauty of the Palin's not qualified to be President argument - it often brings people back around to the fact that the Democrat running for President is also not qualified.
You're missing Mr. Harris' main point. Sarah Palin is a Christian fundamentalist. She believes the world was created 5000 years ago, that dinosaurs were on the Ark, that creationism is science, that the world will end soon in an apocalyptic meltdown originating in the Middle East. Do you want this kind of mind possibly controlling our nuclear arsenal? Really, do you?
Her parents were science teachers, your assertions are urban myths placed on the web by a screwball. Look it up before you dump.
I have looked it up and stand by my comments. I think that Ms. Palin should be asked point blank about her religious beliefs in an open forum with the media present. They should be allowed to question her without restriction on any and all matters concerning her fundamentalist beliefs. Since her religion is on the table as a qualifier for public office, her beliefs should be a matter public record.
OK. Fair Game. As long as we do Obama and Biden as well. Obama's ought to be fun. " I was for Reverend Wright before I was against him." "I am a Christian, not a Muslim", I am a christian, except that I don't believe the Christian things that don't align with my political party's doctrine, because that will cost me votes." Biden is a catholic. Aren;t you afraid of that? Catholicism is far more divisive and politically interloping than non-denominational Christianity.
Well...you could argue that you don't really have to believe in God at all to be a good Catholic. But, I do concede that religion as a whole can be disconcerting when you break it down to its base elements. Based upon other works by Mr. Harris, I think that is what bothers him so much.
Are you kidding me? How can one argue that you do not have to believe in God to be a "good" Catholic (not sure, how a "good" Catholic is different from a "regular" Catholic). Before you speak on Catholicism, could you please reference the Church doctrine that indicates a belief in God is not necessary to be Catholic. Maybe it came out Vatican 2 back in 1965. I would love to see you support your rhetoric with fact, if you cannot, which I suspect, then shut up.
You must be the 'regular' sort? No offense meant. I consider Catholic doctrine to be rather silly...Mary Mother of GOD and all. However, I would be much more inclined to trust the fate of the country to a Catholic who is not literalistic than to a Protestant Fundamentalist who is. My main concern is with people who think they speak and act on behalf of GOD. They are a rather dangerous sort.
I sure don't want some "came from nowhere" half Arab guy that claims he is black with no experience with running anything but his mouth as President.
The real scary thing is how inexperienced Barack Obama is. He has never really been challenged and has been controlled by his campaign. I will gamble with an inexperienced number two instead of an inexperienced number 1 any day of the week.
You're right. He's never been challenged ever in his life. He went straight from HS to running for president. He's not that smart either. All this stuff about Harvard, pundit approved plans for the environment and economy, listen-and-act type of patience, and a wife who actually can stump is just - made up. Plus his name is funny.

Don't forget, not only is his name different, it's VERY SCARY! Especially if you are redneck. [which is what I'm afraid most republicans are.] They prove it everytime they throw in HUSSEIN.
Republicans are red neck? Have you ever been to the south, Chris? They coined the word "redneck", and the south is, primarily, Democrat, so just as many people would not vote for someone with the name of Hussien, neither would they vote for someone whose name was Hitler. Thats human nature. You may feel its unfair, which it probably is, but you can't argue with feelings.
sissy
Siisy? Is that your daughter's name too? What did she get you on Father's Day? Bullets?
Obama is smart and Palin is a fool, anyone who would run and support McSame are dangerous and perilious for our contry, how long to the draft Mr McSame, how long? So far you and Sarah threatened Russia and Iran, we need a peacemaker not a warmonger.
Furthermore, I haven't needed a passport until three years ago and I have never met a world leader, but I am sure that I could easily out debate you on the issues.
Worst Article I have read in Newsweek in years. In fact I just told my wife we are cancelling our subscription. Will there be a similar article regarding Joe Biden and his gaffe about FDR being president at the time of the stock market crash in 1929 and going on television immediately after to explain the problem to the public. Never mind that he wouldn't be president for 3 years, he did his fireside chats on the RADIo and TV wasn't invented until 1939. Admit it you are a narcissistic, sexist, ELITIST (and I mean it in a negative way) jerk.
In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future. I follow a economist named bob proctor who has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly. He perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown ,and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years Is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression. Banks in the US are going under one after the other. Country wide the largest morgage bank in the world Bear Stearns and Lehman brothers , and Merrill Lynch which are 3 out of the top 5 wall street firms. And now Fanny and Freddy which hold 50 percent of the home loans in the United States. The goverment took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. If they didn't the entire financially system would virtually shut down, the stock market would crash And we would suffer beyond what any of us have seen before The future of these companies will fall into the hands of our next president
Bush just like Mcain doesn't understand the economy.
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it
He does not understand exactly what is broken. Its no surprise that he doesnt. The people that make up these
securities use complex math models very few people understand.
Bush and mccain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks take risks with all of our future.
Now Phil Graham is the head of mccains economic policy ,and mccain wants to make him the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time bush met with his economic advisors was in march. He either didnt realize or didnt care that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy in our lifetime.
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as bush has done mccain would be
incredibly worse because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like bush did but a tanking economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 deficit. Most of Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will do get what you have always __________
When it comes to policy bush and mccain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
The chairman of mcains campaign recently said that people don't vote on issues
they vote on a personality composite which means. He is trying to sell you personality instead of results.
He believes people will vote against there own self interests.
Lets teach him we are smarter then that .
Hold them accountable now while it will still help
Elect Obama Biden 2008
Here the scoop on vanted elitism from the top no less ...
"At this point I should note that for the first time, both the United States secretary of state and secretary of defense have doctorates in Russian studies. A fat lot of good that???s done us."
DEFENSE SECRETARY ROBERT M. GATES, on evaporating hopes for closer ties with Russia.
Folks what matters is not how many letters you have behind your name but your ability to roll up your sleeves and get things rolling. You willingness to serve others as opposed to talking down to them. In other words what we need in Washington is a True and Humble Servant of the People with a track record that echoes that fact. Folks with pretensions of grandeur and bombastic speeches need not apply.
I am reminded of the late lamented Robert Heinlein, who wrote (as a character in one of his books) something about the impossibility of making an effective government by adding a bunch of zeroes after a one.
"Folks what matters is not how many letters you have behind your name but your ability to roll up your sleeves and get things rolling."
This is the voting public speaking. An intelligent vote counts the same as one of these.
Harris's article is the unvarnished truth about ???he danger to our country posed by the possible election of McCain-Palin. Congratulations for having the guts to print it, knowing how much hate mail you will rec from those who do not believe in free speech, are racist against African-Americans and/or receive all their knowledge directly from their particular religious faith despite the realities before their eyes. As a citizen appalled by what has happened to our country in the past seven years, I long for someone in the White House who is smarter and better educated than I am and wholly committed to the Constitution of the United States, protection of our fragile planet, and "liberty and justice for all" as stated in our Pledge of Allegiance. Obama meets all of these criteria and exemplifies American family values besides. Are the media pronouncements and polls that show a close race simply a reflection of our national inability to overcome racism ? There seems to be no other likely explanation.
It is not as though this writer, Harris, does not have his own elitist agenda at work here. He seems not to be aware that ALL politics is the mere issue of "who writes the rules." If I were to adopt Harris' post, I would aver that only non-believers should assume that mantle (or those whose religious "convictions" are merely only opinions). Palin knows that she is not omniscient. Harris has yet to grasp that fact.
The hypocrisy of this article screams from page to page. Palin is NOT running for president. Obama is running for president. Obama has just as little if even less experience than Palin. Because Obama is part of the D.C. political 'system' (another good-ole-boys network), it is perfectly ok for him to have little experience, to believe in God and support abortion at the same time, and to allow the media to put out some of the worst journalism ever in our history as a nation. These are very scary times indeed. As Americans, we've become completely ignorant of truth. Our freedom to believe in our convictions has been wasted on millions who have traded in their values for instant, mind-dulling gratification. Real religious conviction is what gave us freedom and will sustain our freedom. Obama goes whichever way the wind blows. I know that McCain and Pallin have their faults, but they stand very firm in their honesty and convictions...they believe in life, they believe in real people. All that Obama wants is to elected. He will do and say ANYTHING to get elected. He's following this presidential election like it's his privileged right...and he and ALL of the Democratic party will try to justify every means to get to that end. this is just plain wrong. But to see this would require some conviction...which as a nation, we lack almost totally.
I agree with the last statement, but really, do not lament this. Conviction is resistance to reasoned discussion. Particularly in the religious vein... I myself am a Congregationalist, but I always wonder - what if you die, and then discover you were *wrong* about the afterlife? :-)
You need to read the article before you accuse Harris of claiming that Palin is running for President. He was clear when he mentioned that she's running for the *second* most important job.
I think the implication is that, since Palin would be in line for Pres. if she were elected VP, then she is essentially needing qualifications to be Pres. This due to McCain's somewhat advanced age.
this article is one of many that contain questions needing to be addressed to Obama also...but this isn't happening. it's perfectly ok to undermine and spread lies about an honest, hard-working mother with political aspirations...but we're 'racist' if we question Obama's lack of experience.
When you make idiotic statements justifying the war in Iraq as an act of God or claiming Russia's proximity to Alaska equates foreign policy experience, you open yourself up to ridicule. Plus, stop this nonsense about convictions. There is no such thing in politics, both on the right and left. McCain has done a complete 180 with his so-called "convictions" so he can pander to all you Jesus followers. That includes selecting Palin for VP. Sh
Although I am deeply religious, I am afraid of Sarah Palin. But it is not her religious affinity that worries me. It is everything else. I am a woman and I am no where near impressed with this woman. She is actually an embarrassment. There are so many amazingly intelligent, capable AND beautiful women out there, why this one with so little to offer?
When she doesn't know something instead of saying she doesn't know, she starts spewing off garbled garbage as if big words put together in any random order are going to make any sense. In her interview with Katie Couric, now that's a woman, Katie could barely hide her disdain for such a sad representation of the true intelligence a woman can posses. And if she was truly a god fearing woman, where was she when her daughter was having pre-marital sex? And what Christian like example is she setting by putting her unwed pregnant daughter up for the world to see like a trophy? No. This is not what I consider a moral Christian woman to admire.
zing!!! thank you...
Incredibly right on! This person is dangerous and misguided. I beg the intelligent people of this country to lay aside any fears they have about Barack Obama and consider the consequences of endangering the public by voting in McCain and this religious lunatic he selected. They will march America into war and they won't be satisfied until they have burned America at the witches' stake. They're insane and America needs to wake up and see it!
Personally, I would prefer a "religious lunatic", as you so delicately put it, to an ex-drug user lunatic; we had one of those in the White House before the current president, and it seems the only thing rehabilitation does for that type is teach them to lie. At least with a religious lunatic, (Christian, that is) their beliefs won't allow them to lie, so we'll always know what we're dealing with.
Reasonable. You prefer the devil you know to the devil you don't.
Dan, stop running in circles, Chicken Little, the sky isn't falling---yet, and when it does, then someone will let you know so you can start to worry right away. Fair enough? Seriously, I could not disagree with you more concerning McCain/Palin, & Obama. I do not feel comfortable about Obams, so it isn't fear, so much, as it is just an instinctive feeling, and I have learned from hard experience to trust my instincts. His promises do not have the ring of sincerity for me. I get the feeling he will say whatever he thinks will appeal to a certain catagory of people, gullible people. And, interestingly enough, if he were not running for president, I would probably find him a fasinating person as an entertainer, or a principal of a school, but not as a politican. He is too evasive on important issues, and when he learns that his view on an issue is unpopular, he changes it to fit whatever they want to hear. That is an inconsistant person, and I would rather hear his honest opinion, even if it differs from mine, than for him to alter his opinion to agree with mine. I get good vibes from McCain and Sarah palin, and if I'm proven wrong, then I will tell my instincts to go dormant, but until then, I will stay with what I feel is the correct way to go.
Can people be objective? Do you think an article is good because it bashes someone you don't want to vote for? What happened to being above the fray?
I have been a democrat for 25 years, but this article is nothing more than an angry, subjective, malicious, divisive, partisan, thoughtless personal attack. It seems like it was written by a McCain operative, because all it does is draw undeserving sympathy to Palin.
Good article Sam Harris. One of my biggest fears with Palin is in doubting she could separate personal beliefs or even know the difference between separation of church and state. I've also just read that the negotiation over the rules for the debate between Palin and Biden have been trickier than those between McCain and Obama because of her inexperence in debates. Does that not in itself speak of her overall inexperience. Will she be getting on the job training when it's time for her to speak to foreign leaders?
Re-read the constitution, it doesn't say anythinhg about seperation of church and state, all it says is that the government will not establish a church, that each individual can decide for themselves how they want to worship, or not worship, as the case may be. I have heard that the ten commandments are displayed in many government buildings in Washington, D.C. But no one is going to force you to convert ti their religion or to believe as they believe, thats the beauty of freedom. Its the radical terrorist who claim to be Muslim who would force you to change to their way, or die; Christians may be firm in their beliefs, but they will respect your right to believe different, they won't kill you if you don't agree with them.

Yeah, sure. They're all little angels. Oh and, by the way, I wouldn't let my young son anywhere *near* your "Christian" churches, where he might be brutally raped by one on those ever-so-kind priests.
Ben, concerning the examples you quoted...none of them were christians, they only "claimed" to be; a REAL christian would never behave in such a disgusting manner. Anyone can claim to be anything they want, but that doesn't make them one. I could claim to be a brain surgeon, but don't think you want me to prove it on you. The Bible say: By their fruit ye will know them. The people you showed as examples were never christians. I'm not saying they were not religious, just that they were not christians, there is a difference. Some people are too busy "practicing" their religion to be christians. Not all prists molest children, but its a fact that many pedophiles will seek employment where they will have access to children, thats why you will find them working as teachers, day care givers, and yes, priest. But thats not to say all teachers, day care workers or priest are that type, pediphiles can be anywhere, they blend in, which is why they are so hard to detect until they get caught, They don't come with pediphile stamped on their head. Its unfortunate, but, yes, christians have been given a bad reputation by those who say they are, but aren't.
So is Palin a Christian, or is she someone who says she is...?
Reasonable. So is Palin a Christian, or is she someone who says she is...?
I just read your article in Newsweek about Sarah Palin and frankly I thought you were reading my mind! I share the same concerns that a highly ambitious, obviously "street-wise" but untrained, untested, and unreflecting prson would have access to "the button." Much like you, I believe that politics is a profession and it requires a certain level of exposure, experience and training. Politicians must have the ability to ask the "whys" and the "hows" without any part of the answer involving God, the Church, the stars, or tea leaves.
While I am not a Palin supporter, I found this article to be an angry, sensationalistic, exaggerated, unfounded, subjective, irrational personal attack. As a democrat I was embarrassed.
In my opinion this anger should be directed at Barack Obama for making the perilous error of putting Biden on the ticket instead of Hillary. When Biden himself says Hillary might have been a better candidate, and he contradicts the Obama campaign regularly, that is a problem.
I don't think McCain every thought Palin had the credentials Hillary does. However, his selection was successful, because Palin is a constant reminder of Obama's terrible judgement of not selecting Hillary.
Let's give a chance for Palin to conduct interviews, debates, press conferences, etc. to prove herself, or not. She hasn't done many interviews yet, and it will be a problem if that continues, but let's see what happens. Is she a reformer who can separate political policy from personal and religious views? Stay tuned.
News & Notes, Saying Hillary might have been a better choice is sort of like saying the cat would be better than the dog to watch our steak. Given that Hillary & Bill had a very controversial investigation over some questionable dealings, and Joe Biden, himself has, according to reports, failed to pay campaign expenses amounting to approx. $150,000 from his failed run for president, then there is the live broadcast recently, where Biden made the comment that "In 1929, when the depression began, and the market crashed, President Franklin D. Roosevelt went on T.V. and made the announcement to the public." Maybe Mr. Biden should go read his history book, because in 1929, Herbert Hoover was president, and there was no television. Yeah, we want someone in the White House, who could become the president should anything happen to Obama, who doesn't even know his history well enough to know who was president when the market crashed which started the depression, and that he could not have gone on T,V. that did not exsist. I'm surprised he knew what year the market crashed. But, according to some he is smart. All I can say is I sure hope somone is who get into the presidential office.
Hillary was the only reasonable choice Obama could have made, in fact, Hillary would have made a better nominee. Yes, she has some baggage, but one could find baggage in just about anyone, including McCain. Hillary has diverse experience and competenece, and she is brilliant, tough, hard working, and has an exceptional and detailed understanding on a broad scpectrum of issues. You may not agree with her policy views, but she can state, defend, and implement them better than anyone.
Biden is a windbag. Obama is underexpereienced, scripted, and has terrible judgement.
Getting back to the article, the far left, party elites, and the DNC that pushed Obama over the top to the nomination. Clearly the article was written by a crazy far left lunatic, and it is an angry, hypocritcal, vicious, personal attack that only serves to award undeserved sympathy for Palin. It is a horrible article.
News & Notes, you are absolutely correct in your post today, and I can find nothing there to disagree with. Your assesment of the candidates and of Hillary are right on target. No, I do not agree with many of her policies, but there is much to admire, also, and I agree she would not have been nearly as scary as either Obama or Biden. But maybe that is why Obama was nominated, was because he can be manipulated by the powers that be in the Democratic party, and Hilllary could not.
