Bravo! Bullseye! Perfect! You hit the nail on the head Sam! Guess she's got 40 something days to read the US Constitution. She NEVER even mentioned it once in her acceptance speech (oops I mean Bush speech writers' acceptance speech) Guess she's "learnin'" there is more to it than the 2nd Amendment.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/22/2008 11:51:24 PM

There is a requirement to mention the Constitution in an acceptance speech? Wow I must have missed that. OK, Let's check Biden's acceptance speech. Hmmm, No mention of it there... Must have been an oversight huh. OK How about Obama's? Wow lots of rhetoric about change but nothing about the constitution there either. Well that's strange. Maybe he meant changing the constitution, because that is something a jnior senator is qualified to do, right? But let's be sure to point out that Palin didn't mention it, cause that is important huh?

Hmmmm...go back and read the printed version of Biden's speech...but this time read the parts in black.

How would Dr. Gupta advise Palin.......

    Dear Doctor Gupta,

I just love your show ???House Call??? on CNN. I try to watch every weekend as I really respect your medical knowledge and your no-nonsense advice to viewers. Now I have a very important medical question of my own to ask you.

I???m eight months pregnant. I???m sitting here in my hotel room in Dallas, Texas, its 4 a.m., and I think I might be going into labor. This is my 5th pregnancy so I know labor signs when I see them. But here???s my real dilemma. I have a very, very important political speech that I really want to give later today before flying back to my home in Alaska. So, here???s my question, Dr. Gupta. Do you think I would be wise to immediately check into one of the many excellent medical centers here in Dallas and get examined? Or, do you think it would be ok to stick around the hotel in order to deliver my important political speech? Once I finish the speech, I plan on catching the next flight back to Alaska where I can be examined by my personal physician. Yes I know, Dr. Gupta, I???m probably not demonstrating the best judgment in flying around the country when 8 months pregnant due to cabin pressure fluctuations, possible severe turbulence, etc. And, yes, I???m fully aware of the fact that I certainly should not be boarding a plane if there is even a remote chance that I'm starting labor. But, I???ve been told many times by many people that I don???t look pregnant. Plus, I don???t plan on notifying the airline or the flight attendants of my condition, so nobody will ever know. I fully realize something horribly could go wrong if I start to deliver at 38,000 feet and there are complications. But, I???m confident the pilot will be able to sit the plane down within minutes and I???d be rushed to a nearby hospital.

Well, Dr. Gupta, what do you recommend I do? Get examined here as soon as possible and risk being hospitalized and thus not being able to make my big political speech? Or, hang around the hotel and make my speech and then run to the airport?

By the way, the total flight time to Alaska is only around 10 hours. And, my doctor is only about an hours??? drive from the Anchorage airport. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that I have a high risk pregnancy. I???m 44 years old and I've been told my baby has Down syndrome.

But, the most important factor I want you to consider when responding to me is this: I strongly believe in Family Values and the most important thing in my life right now is the well being of my unborn baby. Absolutely nothing ranks higher.

Hope to hear from you real soon, Dr. Gupta! Oh, one last thing. If I don???t answer my cell phone when you call, just leave a message. I???ll probably be practicing my political speech!

    Sincerely yours,

    Anonymous

I agree with the article. As a matter of fact I find it insulting to professional women who have worked all their lives and who know you can not possibly do any work and take care of a child at the same time and yet we see Sarah all over carrying the baby or bringing her other small child to political meetings. This is using the children as props. Every working mother knows she must leave the children with caretakers during the work day and that is fine. There is a place for children and it is not the office, the oval office or the factory.

She isn???t just one of us fly over state Americans, she understands us and she has committed herself to serving us. This has required her to have a rapid learning curve while maintaining her commitment to the people she has volunteered to serve. We believe she sees the value of that commitment in the face of every serviceman, servicewomen and citizen she has been elected to serve. Those of us who support her see it reflected in her persona and actions.
With what we know of the people of Alaska we could generalized them as ???rugged individualists with a distrust of government???. That being said, we can???t help but be amazed at the degree of support and appreciation that Alaskans have for her. Her learning curve to so quickly pull together an agreement for the natural gas pipeline that had languished for decades because ???She committed to do just that for the Alaskan people??? is also something we can admire. Her willingness to let the cards of her career fall where they may rather that accept corruption in government as the status quo is something we can respect. Her perspective of the criticisms by those who, do not know her and believe she doesn???t fit in the box of what they demand a self made successful woman to be, when she understands that the tribulations of those who lives are affected by the loss of a job, home or loved one in the service of our country, is something we can hope to teach our children.
What some may not understand is that she is not just one of us she represents the best of us. One who, would lead by standing with us instead of leading from a lectern. One who, can be an example by who she is not what she says. One who, we can allow to make a mistake because we know she will get back up and do the right thing because she has committed to do the right thing. One who, has committed to serving all of the American people and truly understands the burden and humility the commitment requires. One who, proudly states she is one American of a nation of Americans.

This article is so pathetic that it does not deserve my comments.

I am discusted with our political system. The McCain camp is only running Palin because quiet frankly no qualified woman would be a running mate to him. This is an important time in American history and the honor of being the first woman vice president should not go to a do-do who obviously has no idea as to what she agreed to. Has our society deteriated so much that we are now using the "woman" card to compete with the "black" card? At least Obama chose a running mate with strenghts in his weak areas (which by the way is the key to good leadership), whereas McCain picked someone with a down syndrome newborn, a pregnant teenager, and oh yeah she's under investigation in her home state. McCain should be voted against just for the bad judgement call in choosing Palin.

What an absurd article. I'm beginning to think Newsweek needs to change it's name to "The Crazy Democrats Go On a Rampage Times". Sam Harris does not have beef with Sarah Palin's lack of experience with government as much as he has a beef with God, and her apparent belief. However, this article was not written to change the minds of those sitting on the fence or even for Republicans. Harris obviously wrote the article to rail against anyone who lives their life with a faith in God (something he puts no credence in). It wouldn't matter if Mrs. Palin held 8 degrees from Harvard, she believes in Jesus Christ...therefore she is an idiot in his estimation. The trouble, I believe, that Harris doesn't realize, is that he hands conservative, religous republicans a loaded gun that they will immediate turn and aim at people just like him. Elitism is alive and well at Newsweek, on the Emmys, in DC, NYC, any old hotbed on liberal thought, especially it seems with the media. However, when it comes down to it, those elitists are in the minority. I hold a Masters Degree in English Lit from UCLA (one of the most liberal colleges around), but I'm a mother of three -- I guess I just cancelled myself out.
Keep on slamming the Christian mother, governor, hunter, beauty queen -- it only helps her cause with those of us who actually vote.

If "heremommy" thinks that normal God-fearing people echo Palin's type of religious beliefs, she doesn't get out much. Most people believe in God--however most people don't think He talks to them about things like pipelines and winning an elective office or doing things for personal gain. Palin does. Men create wars too---not God.

They will take Palin on a field trip today to meet nine heads of state and Bono. When she is done she will be a bona fide expert on foreign affairs. When you add this experience to the experience she gained looking out of her window to one of the Russian islands, she will be ready to lead the free world. Isn''t that special.

On the way home they will take her to the store and buy her balloons and candy.

    Obama:
Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna *** Laude

    Biden:
University of Delaware - B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

    vs.
    McCain:
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 out of 899 (meaning that,
like George Bush, McCain was at the bottom of his class)

    Palin:
Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
    Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism

Now, which team are you going to hire to lead the most influential nation in the world? even elders in the Repblican party are not sure of McTemper being president... ( i say " well there is your answer ; incase you were pondering").

Just as Palin knows too little about international and national issues to be President or Vice President, you, the author, obviously know too little about Christianity to write about it. Your blind anti-Christian ranting ruined what would have otherwise been a good article with valid arguments against Palin. Instead it was destroyed by your bigotry. Sad. I dream of a world without religious intolerance but for that to happen you need to shut up first.

The writer and his essay are ill-served by the title "When Athiests Attack." Whether the writer is an athiest is in no way germane to the subject, his treatment, or his consclusions. Harris makes several strong and original points in his essay. Titling his piece as if it were a monolithic rant neither serves Mr. Harris nor your readers.

  • Posted By: molly1938 @ 09/23/2008 8:28:57 PM

A great article and one hopes that many who read it will recognize the danger in allowing a person with Palin's beliefs to be so close to the presidency. We've condemned other countries for governing with religion and yet we have Americans who refuse to see that we are seriously considering a person who will do the same? Amazing!

  • Posted By: Corlan1 @ 09/23/2008 8:23:59 PM

I trust her more the Obama. Every point you have made is valid for him, and he isnt a spare rib away from the button... Better ours enemies fear the "normal unremarkable" woman, because we know they wont fear their buddy Obama the liberal cry baby.

The writer and his essay are ill-served by the story's headline. Atheism doesn't figure in the story, and is
not germane to its conclusions. The writer offeres interesting perspectives that transcend this kind of
    labelling.

What are we all arguing about? Isn't it clear that Barak Obama is a "genius"!!!!
Even though he made C's in high school, he still managed to get into Harvard through affirmative action. The only reason that he stumbles over his words when there's no teleprompter is because his mind is pondering concepts much too complex for us and even the almighty Steve Harris cannot hope to ever understand.
The only reason he voted "present" so many times is because a man so great as himself couldn't be reduced to giving his precious opinion on such trifle matters.
Oh, no my friends Barak is simply waiting to be president.
With his supernatural powers he will unite not only the Democrats and Republicans, but also the whole world!
After all the President of Iran was echoing some of his talking points during his speech today.
As for Palin, well she can't be president. She's a Christian. Why would we want a Christian president? Atheisim is in vogue right now.
Besides, she didn\t go to an ivy league school. Every president must go to an ivy league school, look at Bush.
Reagen and Truman might be remembered as great presidents but now sadly they're out of touch.

You are absolutely right. Plus where are her critters going to go to school? I don't know of a single private school in the Washington D.C. area who would admit them. Not a one. I know all of the heamasters in the East Coast from St. Paul to Chapin and they won't even consider it. My little princess says that she would refuse to go to school with such hoi polloi.

Both Obamas and Palins kids attend private schools.

Country First? John McCain should be thrown out of office for the blatan deceipt and abuse he is purpetuating, I really don't think the conservatives can help themselves. What he has done, by putting this cheap parody of Dick Cheney with lipstick within a heartbeat of the Presidency is nothing short of treason against America.

He's kept Palin sequestered from any questioning by the media and by the public because HE KNOWS she is not qualified. This is just one in many lies that McCain deals daily because he wants to win.

He is the complete opposite of reform - if he truely feels the need to reform the Republican party then go do it on your own time, not ours...and start with yourself.

"Thanks, but no thanks." Frankly, these two make Bush/Cheney look good.

John Mc Cain has some friends and advisors that make ME not trust him (i..e. Phil Gramm and Rick Davis). Can you please be specific? Who on Obama's side don't you trust?

Say what you want about Governor Palin (we understand how threatened Obamabots are with the addition of this woman to McCains ticket based on the dispicable, hateful remarks in these blogs). But it looks like Bill Clinton gets why McCain voters love his VP pick:

Bill Clinton says He is From Arkansas, Understands Why Palin is Popular in the Heartland
    By Karen Matthews, Associated Press
    Last update: September 22, 2008 - 4:23 PM

BILLS RIGHT, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NEVER MET HER I KNOW SARAH PALIN. I HAVE ALSO NEVER MET BARACK OBAMA, BUT CONSIDERING SOME OF HIS FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES I DONT TRUST HIM.

NEW YORK - Bill Clinton said Monday he understands why Sarah Palin is popular in the heartland: because people relate to her.

I come from Arkansas, I get why she's hot out there, Clinton said. Why she is doing well.

Speaking to reporters before his Clinton Global Initiative meeting, the former president described Palins appeal by adding, People look at her, and they say, All those kids. Something that happens in everybodys family. Im glad she loves her daughter and she is not ashamed of her. Glad that girl is going around with her boyfriend. Glad they are going to get married.

Clinton said voters would think, I like that little Down syndrome kid. One of them lives down the street. They are wonderful children. They are wonderful people. And I like the idea that this guy does those long-distance races. Stayed in the race for 500 miles with a broken arm. My kind of guy.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, became an overnight star when Republican presidential candidate John McCain tapped her for his running mate. Her family, including her Down syndrome baby, Trig, her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, and her husband, Todd, four-time winner of the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race, have garnered intense media interest.

I get this, Clinton said. My view is . . . why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why dont we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?

The global initiative, a project of Clintons foundation, will hold its four-day annual meeting in Manhattan starting Tuesday. After that, Clinton said he will be busy campaigning for the Democratic ticket of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

when a major decision comes to her desk will she look at it from a political point of view or will it be a religous point of view. will her decisions be based on the constitution or the bible she is devoted to most. his her religous belief above her american believe.? i dont know about you guys but thats too much of a risk. for her to say that our soldiers have died because it was a calling of god is completly wrong. yes we were attacked and thats the people we should be winning against instead we went to iraq and now the people who attacked us set free without justice being served.

  • Posted By: nobushthirdterm.com @ 09/23/2008 7:19:44 PM

Country First? John McCain should be put before a firing squad and summarily shot. What he has done, by putting this cheap parody of Dick Cheney with lipstick within a heartbeat of the Presidency is nothing short of treason against America.

McCain's in this simply for his blind ambition. He said that, exactly, in 2000: "I didn't decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I'd had the ambition for a long time."

He's kept Palin sequestered from any questioning by the media and by the public because HE KNOWS she is not qualified. This is just one in many lies that McCain deals daily because he wants to win.

He believes that the END justifies the MEANS. Like dumping the current family when a young cash cow became available; or tooting his POW creds when in fact, he sang like a songbird to the enemy Vietcong... or like claiming he's the reformer when in fact, this current financial crisis is eerily similar to the same mess McCain found himself in when the savings and loans crisis occurred. Can you say "Keating 5"?

    McCain/Palin = Unstable/Unable

To borrow the airhead's words... "Thanks, but no thanks." Frankly, these two make Bush/Cheney look good.
