Sam Harris is 100% correct. Sarah Palin is in no way qualified to lead the world's most powerful nation. This is not merely a Republican or Democratic concern, it is huge problem for all Americans, and in fact all citizens of the world. The Obama/Biden ticket offers experience and intelligence. Let us hope that the American people realize this. There is nothing wrong with expecting your leaders to be intelligent and qualified. Calling Obama an "elitist" just because he is more intelligent than McCain is ridiculous. If anyone is from the elite stratum of America, it is surely McCain, the son of a Navy Admiral who owns seven houses. America, this is not a beauty/popularity contest. This is an election the will shape all of our futures. We MUST make the right decision this time.

    GUARANTEED TO MAKE YOU SMILE

ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11
LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET
    FOOT ON THE MOON.

HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON,
THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR
MANKIND, WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY
    MILLIONS.

BUT JUST BEFORE HE REENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE
ENIGMATIC REMARK GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY.

MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGH IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK
    CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT.

HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN
EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS.

OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS
TO WHAT THE GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY... STATEMENT MEANT,
    BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED.

ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY , FLORIDA , WHILE
ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT
UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION TO ARMSTRONG. TH IS TIME HE
    FINALLY RESPONDED.

MR. GORSKY HAD DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD
    ANSWER THE QUESTION.

IN 1938 WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WEST TOWN
HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD.

HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS
NEIGHBOR'S YARD BY THE BEDROOM WINDOWS.

HIS NEIGHBORS WERE MR. AND MRS. GORSKY.

AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG
ARMSTRONG HEARD MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY.

SEX! YOU WANT SEX?! YOU'LL GET SEX WHEN THE
KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON!'

    TRUE STORY

    Montana woman,

It is because of such left winged nuts that we now live in the dark ages of the 21st century. If you take a look at this countries history, you will see that we flourished until we began turning our backs on God and the persuit of His will for us. It is indeed dark times when we take less concern about our commander in chief having an extra-marital affair (within the walls of the white house) than we do for a VP that stands up for what the Bible teaches us.
May God have mercy on this country.

Yep, we flourished through slavery and Jim Crow and the industrial revolution (child labor, tenements, no worker rights) etc....at what point did we turn our back on God? By insisting on equal rights? By opposing a war? How do you explain the success of European nations, who are way more rational and secular than we are? Isn't it the conservatives who have ruined people's faith in government, failed to deliver on promise of smaller, more fiscally responsible government, promoted special interests of corporation only concerned with accumulating more wealth at the top, etc.

Why does speaking in tongues like they do in Sarah Palin's church look so phony? If God were really speaking through somebody, would not he do better than unintelligible babble? And what makes you think that God has opinions about U.S. foreign policy?....Let me guess....the "bible?" Is Sarah Palin a snake handler?

I could not have said it better myself. This article sums up everything that I find so terrifying, not only in possibility of a VP Palin, but in the mindset of her supporters.
I'm sure she's a nice person, and it seems that she has been a fairly good Govenor, but to suggest that she is ready to be VP or, heaven forbid, President of the most powerful country on Earth is not only laughable, it's dangerous. This election honestly scares me. What has happened to my country? Since when did Separation of Church and state become optional? This is not the America that the founding Fathers had in mind...who, by the way, were for the most part NOT Christian.

As far back as Eisenhower's time, the media has always portrayed Democrats as geniuses with IQ in the 500's, while their Republican counterparts are all dumbers and dumbests with IQ in the 10's. Witness the geniusness of Kennedy, Mondale, Dukakis, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, and now Obama. Versus the dumbnesses of Eisenhower (brute soldier), Nixon, (crook), Ford (cant walk and chew at the same time), Reagan (B-actor for B-western movies), Bush 41 (boring bureaucrat), Bush 43 (retarded cowboy), McCain (old senile), and now Palin (no passport?). What else's news with Newsweek? And the poor American people have a dumb habit of electing the Republicans (6 out of the last 10 presidents).

    >>"above all, upon the "liberal elites" with their highfalutin assumption that, in the 21st century, only a reasonably well-educated person should be given command of our nuclear arsenal."

There are a bunch of presidents who got crappy little degrees from crappy little colleges. Big deal. You don't have to have a Georgetown degree and a Rhodes Scholarship to be a good president; in fact there exists evidence of the opposite.

Ronald Reagan, coming to be considered one of our very best presidents ever, was quite adept at commanding our nuclear arsenal - he won the freakin' Cold War just by playing poker with that arsenal with the Russians. He went to...woo woo...Eureka College.

Harry Truman, considered to be one of our better Presidents, knows a thing or two about our nuclear arsenal. He didn't go to any college. (Neither did Washington or Lincoln - you know, half of Mount Rushmore - both of whom commanded fairly significant non-nuclear arsenals).

    >>We have all now witnessed apparently sentient human beings, once provoked by a reporter's microphone, saying things like, "I'm voting for Sarah because she's a mom. She knows what it's like to be a mom."

Vapid, to be sure. It's right up there with saying things like, "I'm voting for Obama because he's for "hope" and "change".

Shame on you for your blatant intolerance of other beliefs! So you disagree with Sarah Palin on personal religious views. As you admit, millions of Americans hold these views. Are they all stupid and incapable of running for office? Sarah Palin's views are shared by many famous "stupid, incompetent" people, like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and Abraham Lincoln. Too bad we can't rewrite all of history and take all those darned religious people out of office! Get some real criticisms and look up the word "multiculturalism" in your dictionary. It doesn't just apply to people who agree with you.

    • Posted By: ObjectiveIndependent @ 09/23/2008 4:26:26 PM

My, my, Chandrastic! Methinks you are being intolerant of our good fellow Sam Harris' beliefs, just because he is being intolerant of your tolerance!! Shame, shame, shame!

Gov. Palin is who she appears to be. One who loves her country and is proud of it and is committed to defending it. People see that in her. As for Sen. Obama, well there is doubt as to where his loyalty stands.
For the USA or the global everyone else. Someone who blames America for the worlds problems will not win the hearts and minds of most Americans. God Bless America.

    • Posted By: nwsart @ 09/23/2008 4:23:14 PM

So's my local gas station attendant. That wouldn't make him a good president. As for Obama's loyalty, whose Kool-Aid are you drinking?

  • Posted By: montresor9992004@yahoo.com @ 09/22/2008 6:33:01 PM

Typical leftist essay, long on form, short on substance or thought. I was left wondering what about being relatively uneducated makes one a poor president. Harry Truman did all right, for example. Abe Lincoln went to school exactly 18 months - you lefties are usually in love with him. Woodrow Wilson (college president) and Nixon (well-schooled lawyer, famously didn't go to Harvard or Yale, he was too poor, but got in - on merit, unlike the some other presidents) are a couple of well-educated ones.
Second, I was left wondering how many of the litany of matters you claimed Sarah Palin knows nothing about -without substantiation as a liberal you don't need facts - that Obama was well-versed upon. I'm pretty sure he is up on Islam, but if his comments about the economy are any sign, he gets a zero. Then, you get caught up in some left-wing fantasy land, what if Obama's daughter was pregnant (uh, aren't they kind a young for that to be at all likely?) You decide, again, without facts since its just your view of how other people are, that Obama would have been attacked for supporting the moral decay of blacks. The conservatives have seen where he lives , how he speaks, and who supports him in the press. It seems decidedly unlikely he would have been attacked in that manner. Rather, it would be a sign of the moral corruption and decay in Chicago and Washington D.C., hardly a news flash, BTW. Your boy, who is going to "reform" Washington, has been playing in the mud of the Daley machine in Chicago and the press, other than stridently right-wing FOX, lays off him. Just when are you guys going to get some journalistic standards? November 4th? Thought so.
OF course, you bristle the worst when Bush starts saying God told him to go to war, or some such. I, of course, expect such claims from politicians. Disliking her for being a Bible thumping lunatic is certainly ok with me, as is pointing out how ridiculous and absurd Bush's claim is. And, for once, you actually provided an argument with relevant facts. Unfortunately, it is a larger issue than just God, for me. Rather, the left is guilty of similarly flawed moral reasoning. Occasionally, we hear about it from the right-wing media, but mostly, it is blacked out.

    • Posted By: nwsart @ 09/23/2008 4:19:50 PM

You think media blacks stuff out? Move to China! Get a real dose of censorship. You should be down on your knees thanking newspapers for all that they do to preserve this democracy and the rights of all you brainwashed Limbaugh-regurgitating buffoons.

To call a black man a member of the "elite" is idiocy. If you're taking McCain over Obama, you're racist, and doing everything in your power to deny that to yourselves by spouting off about experience and elitism. it's as simple as that.

I want a president that awes me. I want someone with presence. I want someone who IS an intellectual elite. Because what we have in store for him are an unending series of incredibly complex problems. I want a president that I KNOW can run intellectual circles around most Americans.

Cause he's gonna need it. McCain is not that man. Palin is not that woman.

  • Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 09/23/2008 3:58:20 PM

    Harris is an intellectual coward.

It pays to observe that there is one religion the ''elitists'' and Harris' of the world will not touch. That of Islam. Hence,NEWSWEAK can wax poetic in its ''Culture/Ideas''segment of how the Vatican allows more controversial art like the ''Pieta'',with Michael Jackson instead of Mary as the subject. Journalists at the time of the Muhammed cartoons were being more honest than they let on.

''I fear for my life and for those of my family''. This, from an ''anonymous''reporter for NBC,which chose not to run the two sets of European cartoons.

Thus,Andrew Sullivans ''Christianists'',make for the more easy target. They will not shoot back with real bullets or bomb MARRIOT Hotels into powder. Sam Harris'cowardice and stupidity was ''guaranteed''the day he was born.

    • Posted By: ObjectiveIndependent @ 09/23/2008 4:17:18 PM

      Lee,

In his book "The End of Faith", Harris does *exactly* what you so categorically state he doesn't: he takes on Islam, as a particularly poisonous religion. In part because, as you point out, Islamists are much more likely than most other religious fanatics to take others when they go.

I am always amazed when I encounter a post such as yours, that so purely couples complete certainty and utter erroneousness.

Then again, it has long been clear (at least since 9/11/2001) that mixing ignorance and arrogance is the most dangerous chemical reaction of all.

Assume Palin is qualified to be VP (and hence President, because, hey, it's happened before) because she's a normal, down-to-earth mom with a normal family and normal values.

I don't see any reason why she's not also qualified to be a heart surgeon because she's a normal, down-to-earth mom with a normal family and normal values.

A true supporter of Sarah Palin should submit to a Test of Faith, where they let her perform a major medical operation on them.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 09/21/2008 12:17:05 AM

Ron Paul, not quite the same, babe, but nice try, so tell you what, you go first and allow Obama to do a triple by pass on you, then after you have recovered from that, come on back and we'll discuss my conversion to your camp. Fair enpugh? Hey, it was your idea.

      • Posted By: Ron Paul For Pope @ 09/21/2008 9:55:01 AM

        star3 -

Did I say Obama was a down-to-earth mom? The analogy depends on THAT as the qualification. Go learn how to read before you can claim to think.

And why is it not the same? Both are jobs that require skill and knowledge. Both play with other peoples' lives. In fact, heart surgery is less important because you can only hurt one person at a time.

So, now that I have spelled it out for you, if you think Palin is qualified to be VP (and therefore Prez. Yes, therefore Prez), for reasons that have nothing to do with actually executing the job, then you must believe those qualifications are sufficient for any easier job. Like heart surgery.

Obama has studied for the job for which he's applying. He has convinced me he's qualified.

I'm not surprised that I have to explain things like that to Palin supporters.

        • Posted By: star3 @ 09/21/2008 5:00:48 PM

Ron Paul, and I'm not surprised that you equate knowing how to run the office of VP with, also, knowing how to do heart surgery. I trust my postman to make sure my mail is delivered to the correct address, but I sure as hell would not want him to perform heart surgery on me! Are you daft, you bloke?! But then, as i said, it makes sense that a dimocrat would allow the vice president to perform heart surgery on them. LOL, so if Obama wins, I shall expect his VP, Bidden's job to include doing triple by passes in between his regular job of helping the president to run the country....yeah....LOL. RP, you are a commedian, if not too smart.

          • Posted By: Ron Paul For Pope @ 09/22/2008 6:43:23 AM

It's like talking to a wall. You understand that even a mailman needs qualifications, but fail to understand that a VP needs them, too, and Palin has none of them.

If, for some reason, you're still fixated on actual heart surgery, then the ten years you spent in kindergarten weren't enough.

Even the Republican bloggers here have been persistent and belligerent in offering meaningless and deceptive garbage trying to distract and persuade without any accountability for pertinence or truth. One arrogantly and adamantly, as if an authority, even presented a super long list of philosophies for open markets, deregulation, etc. as to why the Republicans offer better economics, neglecting to admit everything he offered was slanted and full of errors. He was angry and aggressively challenging, looking for a fight but didn???t identify that he was so emotional because he was in the top income category and upset when thinking Obama may increase his taxes. He erroneously said small business would be hurt when Obama actually has promised to reduce their taxes along with large corporations who create jobs here (Obama has said 95% will receive a tax decrease and only those individuals earning over $250k and corporations exporting jobs and using loopholes to escape paying fair taxes would get increases). The blogger also offered that tax cuts for the wealthy create jobs and stimulate the economy, when common sense tells you different. The wealthy who already spend whatever they want don???t spend more when they get tax cuts, the poor and middle class do and get the money right back into the economy, stimulating it and even producing profits for companies and the wealthy. The trickle-down theory is a fraud as what we really have is a bubble-up economy. Tax cuts for the wealthy only make the wealthy wealthier and stimulate contributions for political campaigns and later kickbacks. Point by point answers could be provided but I really don???t want to go back and forth as neither of us will ever change our mind. The final proof is that the last eight years should convince anyone that there is a lot wrong with the Republican philosophies (especially noting that the only thing trickling down is the costs) and then history clearly shows that the best economic periods have always been under a Democratic government. Hard to factually or truthfully argue with that and again that is my real point. How can anyone put any faith in or vote for those that practice gross dishonesty?

I would ask the Atheist Mullah Sam Harris to just change names in his article from Sarah Palin to Barack Obama and then tell me honestly if his idol meets the same criteria he expects of Sarah. The constitution doesn't say the candidates have to be educated in Harvard and neither does it guarantee a successful president. If Sarah was from the leftist establishement with the same level of faults Sam finds with Sarah - the conservative he would be praising her. But the truth is Sarah is heaps more executive experience than all the other three candidates. The problem with Harris is her Christianity just because he thinks Atheism is the solution. Well, history tells me that is not the case. 20th century history alone tells me the Atheists ended up killing 300+ million men, women and children to create utopian Atheistic societies around the world. So I would ask the Sam Harris's of the world to do some impartial thinking. Here is some info to help you out.

Um, Hitler was not an Atheist, he considered himself a Christian. And although being an atheist will no guarantee a person with benevolent leanings we know what has been done in the guise of religion, do I really need to go into all their contributions to the grief foisted upon mankind, in the name of god?

      • Posted By: scoutkraft @ 09/23/2008 4:07:43 PM

Hitler was not a Christian. That is a myth. He believed in a Pagan-type pseudo religion which incorporated myth, and legend of ancient aryans. He also ascribed to the tenets of Darwanism, birth control and abortion. I guess that would make him a democrat.

  • Posted By: Chandrastic @ 09/23/2008 3:40:14 PM

Hmm, let me sum up this article:
Palin holds personal religious beliefs. Therefore, she is a liar, an idiot, and incompetent to run the country.

    Consider this:
    1) The article is inherently intolerant and offensive. Where are the multiculturalists now? They should tar and feather this dude. If the same article had been written about Obama, saying that his youth or his ethnic origins made him unfit to run the country, not even Newsweek would have been clueless enough to publish it. Ad hominem attacks like this are just in poor taste.

    2) I forget who the presidential nominee is...is it McCain, or Palin? Can anyone remind me? It's so confusing.... As has been adequately pointed out by other comments, the VP is largely an ornamental position. And yet Palin seems to be all I hear about. I guess it's remotely possible that McCain will "choke on a sparerib," but on the off chance that he does not, do you think it might be a good idea to address his qualifications?

    3) I don't actually think that being a Christian makes one incompetent, or stupid, or out of touch with reality. I think "you hold Christian beliefs, which is scary and makes you stupid" is a shallow and short-sighted argument. If any religious beliefs should be condemned, maybe the utter failure to acknowledge any sort of higher power might be what I'd choose.

Regardless, one idea in this article IS stupid AND scary: it's writing off a whole class of peope just because they're different from you. Only America's most ignorant citizens can't tell you that blanket condemnations like that were the foundations of injustice: against Native Americans, against African Americans, against women. Way to perpetuate hatred and injustice, Sam Harris. As if you had any credibility left to use on me.

Once again, not stated that because she is religious, she is any of those things!! Did you learn comprehensive reading in school? It just seems to be a happy coincidence!! Anyone who is shown to be an opportunistic hypocrite, whether their Christian, atheist, Buddhist, Muslim, Daoist, Wiccan, Druid, devil worshipper, would still get a big NO in my book! She says no earmarks, but only opposed bridge after uproar and STILL took the money!! They are even building a road to the bridge that's now not being built!!!
