First off, any comment on Obama here is the pure definition of fallacy; it shows the weakness the Republican party has in defending Sarah Palin with anything of substance.

Anyone who calls liberals "close-minded" needs to acquaint themselves with a dictionary. It actually says "open-minded" as a definition of the word liberal. The Republican party should rename itself "the Rhetoric Party" because they can't argue an issue with any credibility. Time after time, the conversation will turn into fear-mongering "watch out for the terrorists!!" or flat-out lies to keep the money rolling into their pockets. Oil company profits at an all-time high-- we have a President whose family has a history in oil. Coincidence? You make the call.

Sarah Palin isn't qualified to even hold the governorship she has, let alone govern the Senate. Her foreign experience consists of watching it on television and making up rhetorical statements like "I can see them out my backyard". She can see 90 miles out of her backyard? And discuss diplomacy from there? Those glasses aren't that thick. I'm astounded that McCain actually found someone to run with that is even more out of touch than he is. That is quite an accomplishment; the most populous county in Arizona has more people than the state of Alaska...how would she run a country and represent the majority of Americans, which would be her job?

OUTSTANDING, ANALYTICAL AND WELL WRITTEN. Kudos to Newsweek for printing the article. I wil refer many to reading it TODAY!

Waiting for the Anti-Christ!!!! Maybe McCain will pass the baton to her. God save us.

Palin's record: run up the public debt for special-interest projects, deny human contribution to climate change, use one's public office as a vehicle for personal vengeance, establish one's unaccountability by stonewalling an ethics investigation. And of course lie about it all.

By refusing to see any of this, and celebrating the very attributes which were used to deride Obama a few weeks ago - specifically, lack of experience and "rock star" status - her supporters show that their thinking goes no deeper than slavish devotion to anyone who bleats "Conservatives good! Liberals baaaaaaad!"

Yes, I'd like a leader who can make intelligent, informed decisions, rather than basing them on what is at best the unpredictible will of an callous and arbritrary deity, and at worst a fantasy made up to shelter one from the harsh realities of life. Frankly, I'd rather she use a Magic Eight Ball - at least it gives a clear answer.

Wow. It still amazes me that there are so many spirit haters out there! A joyful believer that trusts
in the creator's dynamic powers, how sharemeful! What if I told you I prayed for a mishap to occur
on that big 10 billion dollar underground atomic projec? That I've been asking the Angels to
use their powers to divert the energies because I believed it went against the spirit?
Hmmmm....it happened. And I'm going to continue asking the angels to bring
    many troubles to that project.
The spirit exists. Get over it. Embrace whatever you want (or don't want) but to attack
the fruits of the spriit will only leave you in greater darkness, shame, misery, sorrow, worry,
fear, pain, anxiety, emptiness, confusion, etc. . Call it Karma, whatever. The shield is mightier than
the sword. Shine on Sarah Palin!

Wow. It amazes me that there are so many ignorant people out there, Mr. Lopez! I don't know if the spirit exists but stupidity certainly does and you epitomize it. You can go ahead and embrace your inner idiot, but that doesn't mean someone like you should be running our country. This is NOT Iran, after all. Yet. Thanks again to Sam Harris for giving us a voice of reason in the dark ages of 21st Century America.

      Thanks again

What's alarming is to equate a resume with good decision making and/or effective leadership. If folks really think that bumming around the UN or having a Harvard degree makes for a "better" leader, then we best restrict the pool of political candidates to just those deemed "educated and experienced." Don't think Palin's the person for you? Fine...don't vote for her. But the notion that by tearing her down, discrediting her "experience" etc...somehow boosts the qualifications of Obama is silly. Look at Biden...30 some years of political hackery and what has it done the citizens of the US. Nothing. Still making stupid comments, still making self-interested decisions; still having to defer to a HUGE beauracracy of career government employees to fill in the details and provide him "his position" nearly every day. Obama? Community organizer....yeah...that says a lot. Harvard lawyer...impressive...not really; lawyers most certainly can screw things up just as easily as anyone else. It would be refreshing to see folks like Harris remember a core principle of what makes this country so unique and special. Its the freedom to strive and achieve regardless of social strata and other's perceptions of your "qualifications." Vote Obama...fine. Just spare us the smug "but she's not worthy" attitude.

    • Posted By: cowen123456 @ 09/23/2008 1:41:44 PM

oh..you mean like when voters laughed when obama did his world tour photo opt to boost his foreign policy credentials? and his poll numbers went down.....you mean like that? well, at least its our vp that's boosting her foreign policy credential and not our candidate who is running to be THE commander in chief!

  • Posted By: William R @ 09/23/2008 10:46:31 AM

Thank you Sam Harris! When I see a Pentecostal running for any office I have to shiver. They are as fringe and the Phelpsians. This country and the globe for that matter are doomed to self destruct as long as the religious are allowed to wield power in our political and social discourse and as long as "faith" is not evaluated as a neurosis but instead given carte blanche as truth (no matter whose book you're using at the time) with no burden of proof. The sun is green I say, the sun is green and so you must obey me!

    • Posted By: patton434 @ 09/23/2008 11:18:42 AM

William: So you are admitting that you discriminate against people because of their religion!! Who else do you hate?? Why is this any better than someone saying they shudder when a black person runs for office? Or a Muslim runs for office? You've just been exposed for who and what you really are!!!

      • Posted By: redtide @ 09/23/2008 1:36:50 PM

How can you compare a person's religion to their skin color? Religion is a choice that is 100% your own personal decision - and thus is open to valid criticism, as are all opinions. We have no choice about our skin color, which makes criticism of it invalid and absurd. Your comparison makes no sense whatsoever.

      • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/23/2008 11:41:48 AM

Actually he's right. the Fundamentalist are a scary people. Not the normal, reasonable, non-fanatical religious people. Your fear tactic toss-in is the exact reason why he wrote it - because of people like you. If you look at it, you've been exposed.

        • Posted By: paproudmom @ 09/23/2008 12:12:03 PM

Brilliant. All fundamentalist are scary people. How many have you really ever set down and talked to. I am not a fundamentalist but have some fundamentalist friends. They are nothing like you try to represent. But I need to stick to my new motto. Never argue with a fool.

Palin does not consider herself to be pentacostal

  • Posted By: sharkey1969 @ 09/23/2008 1:32:29 PM

I agree the article was mistitled, but that it could be perceived as the "rampages of a ravening animal" just because it's written by a prominent atheist (and intellectual) shows how bad off America really is.

  • Posted By: animatedasina @ 09/23/2008 1:31:59 PM

Thank you, Mr. Harris, for eloquently stating my own views and that of David Brooks, the conservative pundit, that what Dubya and Palin lack, they make up with bravado and their falsely-held pride of no-blink decision-making. Palin also shares with McCain the nutty commonality of thinking we will come to believe anything if they repeat it over and over again. McPain scares the hell out of me and I'm frankly embarrassed how some folks have arrived at their decision to vote based on emotional, not-intellectual, reasons. Never thought I'd see the day.

It's quite frightening that the government is now taking over the major lending corporations and insurance giant AIG through their bailouts, considering the government had a hand in helping things get to this level. So who do you want steering the government, now that it's REALLY in charge and in control? Another person of average intelligence and limited global perspective--like McCain or Palin--or an educated, intelligent, articulate man with global approval and an astounding ability to see the big picture? Obama 08

  • Posted By: Cirbryn @ 09/23/2008 1:22:25 PM

Why in the world did the editors title this piece "When atheists attack - A noted provocateur rips Sarah Palin???and defends elitism."? Are they trying to visciously undermine the piece even as the print it? Yes, Harris is an atheist, but no that doesn't mean his essays should be treated like the rampages of a ravening animal. And he was only "defending elitism" in the sense that he was defending the necessity of intelligence and education in our political leaders.

  • Posted By: dreamweaver39 @ 09/23/2008 10:58:21 AM

PALIN DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT THE DOTS> FOR EXAMPLE TAKE HER DENIAL OF MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING!
There enlies the greed vs. being concerned with issues that are at the center of National Security. Global warming is caused by human activity. No one can dispute that. If we fail to curb our hunger for fossil fuel we might get our short term addiction satisfied but there is a higher price to be paid in the form of, just to name a few:
    Rising temperatures mean
    1. more viral diseases, for mosquito populations thrive in warm climates
    2. More warming of the ocean temperatures mean less fisheries available in the entire planet. there is a direct connection between dead zones- coral bleaching, the increases in jelly fish population and the extinction of fisheries around the planet- In fact jelly fish will one day become our main seafood dish! YIKES!
3.meaner hurricanes, yes!! hurricanes get their fuel by warm waters and somehow the gulf region seems to be prone to them- exactly where almost 49% of all of our oil refinery capacity is located not to mention thousands of oil platforms! Mother nature is cleaning them up!!Paybacks are hell!!
    3. Droughts, and extreme flooding are all related to global warming
    4. Huge, massive famines will hit 3rd world countries , with it more spreadable diseases and huge population shifts. Guess where all like to come to, America baby, the land of opportunity
5.Forest fires and with it land erosion will add to the maladies that will trigger all types of global chaos
Now, what are the evangelicals calling this events:-JESUS IS COMING TO RESCUE THEM IN THE RAPTURE - PALIN shares this world view. HER family is immune for she is one of the saved ones!!
That is why they could care less for empirical science, in their world view they are giving God a hand. God will come when the last tree falls down!!
They can not connect the dots of a failing energy policy that makes us and the world more vulnerable economically, enviromentaly, and geopolitically for our wars are mostly around nations that have VAST OIL RESERVES.That is why American oil companies got no bid contracts to extract Iraki Oil fields this year. Yes! Our veterand died for enriching the oil barons.
McCain will put her as head of the Whit House energy commision because he could care less about global warming and more about oil companies. He thinks money , wealth makes his family immune to the environmental hazards of Global warming.
C'mmon Republicans, Independents, give up your ideological obssesions and vote for the most reasonable candidate to tackle these coming Tsunami, vote for Obama 08!

Palin is George Bush with lipstick.

"Global warming is caused by human activity." Yes, that is way their are wars in the world - to try and keep over-population under control!

    • Posted By: wxmatt02@comcast.net @ 09/23/2008 12:00:09 PM

Global temperature has been cooling for the past ten years while CO2 emissions have been increasing. Stop believing what the media tells you and start looking at the data.

      • Posted By: Slimmie @ 09/23/2008 1:14:21 PM

Liberals don't care about data or facts, they only work on their 'emosions'.

  • Posted By: VotedForAllParties @ 09/23/2008 1:14:48 PM

Any objective person can see Palin is fluff (very little experience, very little book and real world education, etc.) and McCain is not up to the task. Who would truly want Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency? Our country has been in decline for years (how are your investments? housing values? salary? have a job?) and our allies have either left our side or suffered for supporting us. Obama-Biden is our only chance to turn this country around. Not my first choice, but the best choice this November. Check the egos and vote to help the country.

  • Posted By: cdetrie @ 09/23/2008 1:11:18 PM

    very interesting.
Ad-hominum arguments passed off as support for epistemological certainty. Tsk Tsk, get your money back from you schools and Universities.

Can all possible difficulties can be prepared for by education of facts and the actions taken by others? NO
We'd all be better off with a clear understanding, and diligent execution of a few solid decision-making criteria.

Maybe then we would spent more time researching the facts, rather than simply spewing our gutteral disaproval of that which scares us because of ignorance or infamiliarity.

Dig a little deeper.. and understand this article is entertainment, not news.

Let's hope we as Americans are savvy enough to spot a clearly misguided decision in choosing Sarah Palin as the nominee for VP. If this is the kind of decision that McCain is going to make in a crunch, I'll pass. She's not qualified to be in charge of her state, let alone the Senate. Honestly, it seems she has a hard time being in charge of a family... It seems clear that he didn't even consider her background or history when he chose her, it was purely for shock value and attention; that move will hopefully show his decision making skills to the rest of the country. I don't care to vote for someone as out of touch as Senator McCain, and he's chosen someone even more out of touch as his running mate. Being a governor of a state of 700k (which isn't even the population of the most populous county of Arizona, the state McCain is a Senator from) does NOT qualify you to be Vice President, and frankly, the way she tried to snow her way past the Bush Doctrine question does not instill trust.

Any comment here about Barack Obama is the pure definition of fallacy. This story has nothing to do with him, and attacking him or his platform shows how little evidence desperate Republicans have to defend Palin.

BTW, cowen 123456, look up the definition of liberal once. It actually says "open-minded". Nice try. If anyone's close-minded, it's Sarah Palin...and John McCain. Why was Arizona the last state to adopt MLK day as a holiday? Guess.

  • Posted By: Cirbryn @ 09/23/2008 12:58:56 PM

Why in the world did the editors title this piece "When Atheists Attack - A noted provocateur rips Sarah Palin???and defends elitism."? Is the point to print the piece while at the same time trying to visciously undermine it? Harris' points have nothing to do with the fact that he's an atheist. And he isn't defending elitism, he's defending the necessity of intelligence and education in political leaders.

Thank you for this thoughtful article which I hope quickly spreads around the country. I'll do my part. My fear is that Palin supporters don't read much but gleefully watch her endlessly proclaiming the same untruths in speech after speech. ARRRRRGH.

  • Posted By: JoyRipple @ 09/22/2008 10:11:49 PM

OK so you hooked me with the headline "When Atheist Attack", which I thought would be expose an atheist. I am a Christian. 90% of Americans are Christians. And you and Newsweek consider it OK to attack the majority of Americans. The more the media, using flunkies like you, attack Sarah Palin and Christians, the more you unite all of us to vote Republican in this coming election.

As an Independent I had not made up my mind as to who I would be voting for. You have made my decision very easy. I now know that I must vote Republican come what may. You locked my vote in. Thank you for helping me decide. As I read your article I started to write my feedback which is:

You are a fool... we have been getting bad weather and there are many wars going on right now. Isn't that a sign of the end of an era and the beginning of a new one? Aren't those signs of the end times?

How do you justify your "intelligence" when you label Methodist as non-Christians? This makes you a bigger fool than I thought. When you attack religion and especially Sarah's faith you show yourself to be an ignaramus. She was not brought up as a Pentecostal... she converted to it in her teen years. So in essence you are saying "If a person is a Christian that person is not qualified to be a leader". But, how about Obama? Isn't he claiming to be a Christian, not a Muslim? How does he qualify?

Then you consider it fair game to attack Sarah's daughter while you attack her. You are the scum of the earth.

As see that you consider the "elites" the saviour of mankind. The "elites" where born with a silver spoon in their mouth and have been sheltered, from birth, from the realities of life. You must consider yourself to be one of those "elites" who supposely have all the answers.

Sarah Palin definitely is not one of those "elites". Who she is and what she has acomplished so far is due to her Christian upbringing in small town America. She is not a Washington "elite". Not one of those that act as if they are gods and pay no attention to what the citizens want. She is just like the average 90% of Americans. Hopefully Americans will vote in groves this fall for the Republican ticket, the party that has allowed such a worthy candidate as Sarah to be included. Yes, you made my vote easy as I read through your biased article I made my choice.

I must correct you that the "elites" we are talking about are those born with a silver spoon in their mouth, not those individuals who have risen to the top of their fields through dedication and hard work. I do want a competent pilot flying my plane. I do not want an "elitist" flying my plane.

I end my comments with: "You are a moron!"

    • Posted By: HamsterDK @ 09/22/2008 10:55:04 PM

If 90% of your population is like Palin I truly pity your country!

For an outsider looking in (on the web in commentaries like this), I gotta say the impression I get as far as intelligence goes, favors the Democrats GREATLY!

      • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 12:01:01 AM

This is because you are only reading the democrats point of view, and you lack a point of view of your own. If you were experiencing these issues and did not live in a socialist society, you might not agree with them so easily.

        • Posted By: HamsterDK @ 09/23/2008 12:53:03 PM

I lived in your country from ´95-´99 until I got too sick and tired of your lack of decent healthcare for people with chronic diseases. I lived in both pure red states (GA), blue states (CA) and even spent some time in Ohio when it was blue. I have resided in many parts of the world so have some basis for comparrison unlike you and Palin, I also have a Masters in politics and macro economics and therefore probably know a great deal more about these than you or Palin. I know an un-informed person when I see one, and amusingly I see a lot more of those from the Republican side when following your election from both sides of the fence. Even considering Palin as a qualified President makes you a dumb person in my mind.

You are completely blinded by her prettiness and tough talking, that you don't realize what you are really dealing with. It's basically like watching a cult following their leader. None of you didn't even know her 5 weekes ago and now you treat her like the virgin Mary. It gives me goosebumps to be honest.

Obama promises to fund research at NIMH on neurobiological differences between whites and blacks. "As my mentor Reverend Wright has said whites are left hemisphere dominant and blacks are right hemisphere dominant. I want to know whether making whites more right hemisphere dominant will make them less greedy and less bitter."
