loriw: if your post about approval ratings was a response to my post, i think you missed the point. i wasn't saying bush's approval is low and mccain agrees w/this low-approval person and is therefore bad. let me make it clearer: Bush and the Republicans -- regardless of anyone's approval rating -- have been an unmitigated disaster for this country, and McCain has supported their disastrous policies 89% of the time and would continue along a similar ruinous path if elected.

    JoyRipple,
The fact that this article "locked in your vote" for McCain/Palin merely proves what Harris is saying. So since we live in dangerous times and we have had some big storms in recent years, that means the apocalypse is nigh? Really? Harris did not label Methodists "non-christians" he pointed out that Palin and others that share her views believe that methodists will burn in hell when 'Jesus saves". As far as Harris attacking Palin's daughter he pointed out the hypocrisy of the right. When the spears girl was pregnant it was lack of Morals, but when it is right-wing radical like Palin, it is ok. Seems to be a double standard no matter where your beliefs lie. The fact that Palin, is not a member of the elite, is very true. However I fail to see how the guy you will not be voting for is a member of the elite. He went to one of the most respected educational institutions in the world. He worked and pulled himself up from nothing and has been rewarded for his effort. That is the quinessential American dream. I dont see how that is born with "silver spoon in mouth". The fact that you "locked in your vote" because she is like 90% of all other Americans is proving his point. Good work, good thinking and above all good choice.

OK. I am tired of the Spears thing. So lets set the record straight on this one. The Palin kid messed up. Plain and simple. However, there is a difference here that is important. The Palins have raised their kids in an environment that educates and encourages the children to have a solid moral fiber. Every thing about this family is evidence of that. The Spears family raised their kids in an environment of excess, exploitation, and promotion of a comoplete lack of moral behaviour. botyh kids messed up. but one of them new better. Either way, we are not electing the kids, so they should be off the table of discussion. The pPalins did the right thing by their daughter both before and after the pregnancy, that shows they understand family and cchristian values.

Bush and the Republicans have run the country into the ground. If anyone thinks McCain represents a change from Bush, consider that he has supported Bush 89 percent of the time since Bush took office nearly 8 years ago, and he supported Bush on the Iraq War (which Obama had the good judgment to oppose from the beginning). And McCain, as he himself has admitted, agrees with Bush on most fundamental issues, including economic issues, tax cuts for the wealthy (even though the country is massively in debt and engaged in two unfunded wars), Social Security, and perhaps most importantly, war -- McCain agrees with the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive war against potential, NON-IMMINENT threats -- the same doctrine Bush "justified" the invasion of Iraq with. If you want more Iraq Wars, vote McCain.

This is fun Mike L. Im glad you are wasting your time on me. Never once did I discredit Obama. Thanks for speaking for me though. You are very generous. Thanks for calling me informed. I mean the fact that I read articles like this, although I disagree with it, means I really could care less about my country. You are right. Another great liberal rant. Are you missing a protest right now? Cause I wouldnt want you to miss that on my account. Sincerely

What is elist by having I brain God for bid an education. Sarah Palin is an idiot! Her own party won't let her speak on her own for one minute becuase she is completely void any intellectual thinking processes. Her tactics are bullying! lying and secrets. The women is a complete fraud. I am sure there are alot of people who have worked damn hard to get their education who actually arent' afraid to apply reasoning that don't appreciative some inferior small minded intellectual moron calling them elist! News flash the oval office is not meant for the everyday joe! if that was so instead of smelling Palins skirt why don't you just run. You will probably do as well ! Just make sure you can shot, lie, read a telepromoter, and bible thump! .

Ok, pro-lifers, how do you plan on taking care of these unwanted babies? I give Sarah Palin all the credit in the world taking care of a special needs child, but the 37 million people in America who are living in poverty can not afford to care for such children. Those that do often end up abusing or neglecting the child. Let's take care of the children we have first and set up a healthcare system for all, then implement a Christian based sex education program that includes abstenance and the costs of raising a child as well as stressing the importance of a stable environment with two parents. Let me stress that these parents will need to have JOBS, good paying JOBS to care for the children.

Exactly! I don't want another president/vice president who I can have a beer with. I want one who is better than me. Someone more educated and experienced. Palin is an idiot, with ridiculous ideas of how to govern.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 3:07:38 AM

Good Luck. I think you will have a long search looking for a politician who is better than a person that you'd like to have a beer with. If you think Obama is better than you, than you must have pretty low self esteem.

The two reasons I am voting for Sarah Palin is because she supports my values and she is a leader who is my only defense in modern government against self-centered idiots like Sam Harris. I wish that dopes like Harris knew what it is to work for a living, raise a decent God-fearing family, and actually have to account to a community for his attitude and behavior. The greatest attribute of Sarah compared to clowns like Harris are that she has more character in one little finger than he and five wanna be losers like him will ever have--and, he knows it, and it drives him absolutely jihadically cuckoo.

    • Posted By: ChrisRosendin @ 09/22/2008 11:13:44 PM

Agreeing with your religion centered views does not equal character. Actions do. We now have a better picture of what Sara Palin is: Banning books she hasn't read, repeating obvious lies (bridge, "pay-cut", teleprompter), using her position to wage personal vendettas (trooper-gate), Using her position to enrich personal friends in positions they are not qualified for (Ag dept), an indefensible view of executive privilege, a refusal to answer reasonable questions about her record, positions and qualifications etc. Our country deserves so much more than another "inch-deep" theocrat with her hand on the button. Her extreme dominionist theology is enough by itself to disqualify her. Add in the rest and, well, we'll deserve what we get if we elect her.

Sam, I found your column on Real Clear Politics which surmised your column ???Why Sarah Palin's Ignorance Puts Nation at Risk??? After reading your column, what surprises me is the country???s lack of serious concern with Obama???s ignorance and lack of intellectual, leadership or experience qualifications. I hear the media praise and praise Obama as a smart man, but we never hear any specifics that would qualify him for the nation???s highest office. Perhaps he is smart at playing the game of election politics, but leading our great country is no game and requires a wisdom that surpasses politics.

I am ten times more concerned about Obama???s lack of intellectual and leadership qualifications. his ideologies are even more fearsome. He would not only put our country at risk, but he would be disastrous for our nation on every major issue facing our country. I find is very strange the media are not questioning Obama???s lack of qualification. Apparently and sadly, the masses believe the rhetoric that have been spoon fed by the media that he is smart and would be a good leader without any substantiation. It is sad that the masses can be duped by the media. Even your column misfocuses and does not address the more important issue, Obama???s lack of qualifications. I agree with the column that ???when it comes to politics, there is a mad love of mediocrity in this country???. If the people would put on their thinking hats only for moment the polls would be quite different.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 2:56:57 AM

Amen. Except that I don;t think the public is so fooled by the media. If they were you'd see a landslide in the works, but what you see is a dead heat, which in this left wing media, is probably an optimistic estimate that gives undue favor to Obama's true standing. I think that if the election were held today. McCain would win by 10+ points.

  • Posted By: Mike L @ 09/23/2008 2:56:13 AM

Bush and the Republicans have run the country into the ground. McCain will continue their disastrous policies. If anyone thinks McCain if anyone thinks McCain represents a change from Bush, consider that he has supported Bush between 80 and 90 percent of the time over the last several years, including on the invasion of Iraq (which Obama had the good judgment to oppose from the beginning), and agrees with Bush on many fundamental issues, including economic issues, tax cuts for the wealthy (even though the country is massively in debt and engaged in two unfunded wars), Social Security, and perhaps most importantly, war -- McCain agrees with the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive war against potential, NON-IMMINENT threats, the same doctrine Bush ???justified??? the invasion of Iraq with. re: "Sarah Palin is everything Hillary ever wanted to be. A Self made woman who did not ride into elected office on her husbands reputation." You must be high on a heaping pipe of Wasilla Meth if you imagine that Hillary Clinton aspires to be anything like Sarah Palin. The idea that you think the two of them are even on the same playing field, intellectually, is absurd. FYI, when I say "playing field", I use it as a metaphor. I don't mean an actual playing field, like the ones where Sarah Palin's kids play hockey.

Mr. or Mrs. Sparkly makes an interesting comment. He or she still misses the point. Obama has been educated in all of these matters. Democrats do not blame the press for any of his missteps (were there any??) and he can speak very well without the teleprompter. Republicans are really needing to think twice about who they want for VP of the country. Does that Mom who likes Palin so much because she is a Mom think that she can work out all the problems of the US just based on her experiences as a Mom? Why, then, would Palin be able to do that?

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 2:51:21 AM

Because She is not just a mom. She is an experienced executive who has one of the highest approval ratings as Governor of a state of any Governor in history. And she understands energy, and she understands reform, and she understands what it takes to lead people and she understands that what was wrong in Alaska is also what is wrong in Washington. She fixed it in AK. She can help fix it in D.C.

and I especially LOVE how Democrats forgive him for being in such a RACIST church for 20 years where his minister REGULARLY said "God Damn America" and US of KKK.

Obama is a closet racist and his policies scream racism. Steal money from the hard working, business owners 99% of which are white and create new WELFARE programs that mostly benefit blacks.

Real nice! Reward the SUCCESSES in this country like myself (paid $107,000 in taxes last year!) and give it to the lazy good for nothings that create the crime good American's have to deal with.

Comment: Obama does have experience and at the very least an education that would give him the ability to make some of the most important decisions in the world.

Obama has a degree in political science with a specialization in international relations from Columbia University.

Went to Harvard Law School and was the first Black President of the Harvard Law Review. (Not easy for a white guy let alone someone who is "Different". This means he was the best of the best of the most intelligent minds in the country...)

As far as protecting freedom... Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years!!!!! Hmmmmm!!!!!!

After this is when he began his political career...

Can either John McCain or Sarah say they have been the best of the best??? Or are they the best of the ordinary???? We need extra-ordinary people running the country and making decisions...

I think the point of this post, is not Aithiest or Christian, it's simply that Sarah Palin does not have the knowledge or the understanding to be Commander In Chief. Let's see how she runs Alaska's government the next 10 years before we hand her the key to a nuclear weapon.

I'm sure Obama would have done more as mayor of Wasilla than save the city money by charging rape victims for their forensic exam and building an ice skating rink. (It should show you the idiocy of someone when they build an ICE SKATING RINK in ALASKA).

Obama was or is: magna *** laude graduate of Harvard Law School; of the board of directors for several philanthropic/social improvement organizations; professor of constitutional law for 12 years at the U. of Chicago; civil rights attorney for many years; two-term state senator in Illinois, representing heavily populated areas of a major metropolis (in contrast to, say, Wasilla, AK); U.S. senator for nearly 4 years. Here is Wikipedia???s summary of his involvement w/various Senate Committees: ???Obama held assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations, Environment and Public Works and Veterans??? Affairs through December 2006. In January 2007, he left the Environment and Public Works committee and took additional assignments with Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. He also became Chairman of the Senate's subcommittee on European Affairs. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama has made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa.??? Some highlights of his legislative career: "In the Illinois state Senate, he authored about a half-dozen major laws on issues ranging from ethics to education. The best example of his leadership style was bipartisan legislation to require the videotaping of police interrogations, which is now a national model. Obama brought together police, prosecutors and the ACLU on a win-win bill that simultaneously increased conviction rates and all but ended jailhouse beatings. In Washington he has his name on three important laws: the first major ethics reform since Watergate; a much-needed cleanup of conventional weapons in the former Soviet Union, and the "Google for Government" bill, an accountability tool that requires notice of all federal contracts to be posted online." [Jonathan Alter, Newsweek, 9/13/08] Also, Obama???s unique background has endowed him with unparalleled gifts of diplomacy toward people of all types -- a background which includes firsthand familiarity with all of the various cultures, religions, and languages he was exposed to growing up (anthropologist mom, white grandparents from Kansas, black dad from Kenya, Indonesian step-dad, and foreign residence and travel). And Obama has undergone an intense vetting for nearly two years now while running for president defeating the Clinton political machine. To compare Sarah Palin???s qualifications to Obama???s the way some Republicans have done is a joke. And the Republicans are, of course, overplaying the ???executive experience??? card regarding Palin. After all, BUSH had ???executive experience??? before he became president, for god???s sake. If anyone doubts that Obama is far better prepared than Palin, I challenge them to watch any interview with Obama and compare it to Palin???s interview with Charlie Gibson. Obama is clearly more knowledgeable, more articulate, more reasoned, a deeper thinker, more able and comfortable t

  • Posted By: ms142 @ 09/22/2008 11:20:06 AM

I'd like to respond to Sarah1234 (and people who say the arguments against Palin also apply to Obama): neither Palin nor Obama have much experience, but intelligence is a completely different matter. Black people sometimes suffer from the racist stereotype that they are less intelligent, but few people would say that of Obama. It's not just about good speech. You are comparing someone who took six years from five small mushroom colleges to compete a bachelor in communication, to someone who has a Columbia degree on International Relations, and a Harvard law degree. In terms of speech content, you are comparing someone who has no particular views about the world apart from the fact that she lives "near" Russia, to someone who has a comprehensive and coherent Wilsonian view about International Relations (read Obama's book or his earlier not-so-dumbed-down campaign speeches). I can go on and on about Obama's superior reasoning skills when he flushed out his thinking on several occasions. (Trained as a theoretical physicist, I pay more attention to such things than most people do.)
