The economy has tanked. The power & prestige of the US is @ an all time low.
could we please stop talking about this very attractive but rather silly woman.
I wish that this opinion had been titled differently. One need not be an atheist or an agnostic to be completely unnerved by Palin and by McCain's lack of thought in selecting her.
Dick Cheney notwithstanding, and discounting the very slim chance that the "heart beat away" will become relevant an any first term, remember what the real job is that Palin and Biden are campaigning for. The vice presidency has been more a target for jokes and ridicule than a sought-after job. George Clinton, who became Thomas Jefferson's Vice President in 1805, called the job a "respectable retirement," after 18 years as Governor of New York. In 1848, Senator Daniel Webster turned down an offer to be Zachary Taylor's vice-presidential running mate, saying, "I do not propose to be buried until I am really dead." And John Nance Garner, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Vice President for his first two terms (1933-41), said the job wasn't worth a bucket of warm spit. (Actually, he used a cruder word than that.) John Adams, the country's first Vice President, famously called it "the most insignificant office." Al Gore described the job as that of "the nation's mourner," as one of his main functions was to attend the funerals of deceased world leaders and dignitaries. And McCain correctly stated that the constitutional duties of the job were to cast votes in the Senate in the rare case of a tie and to enquire every morning as to the health of the President, a fairly accurate description. In fact, from a Constitutional perspective, the VP has no other duties or powers. You hear it said in the news all the time: people vote for the top of the ticket.
The media is making more of it this time because they think it works for Obama by distracting from his own total lack of experience. Problem is, as both H. Clinton and J. Biden pointed out, with Obama, that lack of experience is out of control on day one. Indeed, as Biden stated when addressing Obama's total lack of qualifications, "the Presidency does not lend itself to on the job training." But Palin is not running for the Presidency, and according to Walter Mondale, the VP slot does in fact amount to on the job training. As Mondale, Carter's VP, once notably said when subsequently running for the Presidency, "I learned an awful lot as Vice President that I didn't know as a Senator."
Where is the article about Biden's long standing relationship to the credit card industry, or the stalled credit card reform bill, passed by house but dead in the Senate, where Biden "works." (And opposed by Bush. Idiot)

I'm a little behind on my Newsweek reading and just stumbled upon this gem. Mr Harris is so completely right on in his description of Palin and how she goes beyond - way beyond - Bush's ineptitude and mild "Christian" convictions. She goes into the realm of scarily religious, scarily ignorant and possibly poised to command the most powerful arsenal on Earth. Scarier still is how multitudes of anti-intellectual people around the country are connecting with her like they did with our 'frat boy' president... but at least frat boys spend most of their time partying and basically minding their own business. Thank you Mr Harris for what you do and how you do it. Keep up the good fight.

in response to krohns link: Getting people to register to vote is hardly stealing an election in my view, even if you tell them they should vote for obama. its not like they are like get in the fricking van and if you don't vote obama we will kill you. We want to talk about stealing elections lets talk about ohio from last election or what about florida, hell even some fo the republican primaries NH for instance. I Just don't see how that story is about stealing an election, unless stealing an election is getting more people to vote. In short Fox news is lame, almost as lame as cnn and msnbc.
Where is Journalism????Is everyone a commentater? Does no one actually do journalistic work anymore??

Sarah Palin is not only uninformed & willfully ignorant, [as our author points out, these qualities have been sold to the U.S. public as bizarro qualifications for high public office - & gave us 8 years of President Pretend Cowboy], but she seems to have a deeper, darker means-girls quality about her. On top of her obliviousness, she's got a record of spiteful retaliation. Her positions on reproductive issues seem punitive - it's one thing to "choose life" but another to be on record wanting women to be forced by the state to carry to term fetuses resulting from violent assault.
The awful thing about the rape-kit issue is that it was forcing victims of crime to pay for investigative tools - which we don't do in the cases of assault, robbery, murder, or any other crime. Singling out that one category of crime victim to shoulder the costs of investigative tools demonstrates a remarkable lack of empathy for her fellow females.
EVEN MORE ON THE VOTER FRAUD THAT IS GOING ON IN KEY BATTLEGROUND STATES!:

DON'T SAY THAT I NEVER WARNED OF OBAMA'S NEFARIOUS CAMPAIGN!
This woman is clearly unqualified. This is not open to 'debate' (pun intended). When she repeated McCain's own words in the debate saying "sitting down with Iran's leaders is not only naive, it's dangerous", I almost laughed - it was so obviously a memorized line and she was trying ever so hard to sound like she knows what that means. However, it is not her ignorance or even her utter lack of education or knowledge that scares me. It's her MORALS. Censorship; killing animals for sport (check out the youtube vid where someone is shooting at an injured wolf from a plane - Palin calls this "pest control"); rigid adherence to religious ideals that have been proven to backfire (ie no sex ed); she fires people who do not agree with her (again, she is NOT open to debate - she wants to roll around and glory in her ignorance); she wants to censor books; she had rape victims pay for their own rape kits. On top of this, she is an "end of the world" religious wacko. My question: How does ANYONE think someone like this is GOOD for the country? I fear we have become a nation of Jerry Springer guests. "God" help us all.
When elected she becomes a world leader, when Mc Cain dies as president (not unlikely) she becomes president of the USA, and by extension of the world. Her "End of the world religion" may become very realistic, even for atheists *** myself
Viewed from a modest Swiss citizen, I (we) fully share Sam Harris opinion and concerns about Sarah Palin. It is for a normal human being here in our old Europe unconceivable to let a person like her become the second most powerful personnage in the World.

I find the arguments here disgusting and un-American. I am not referring to the attacks on Palin's intelligence or lack thereof. I speak to the attacks on religion in general in a country where we are free to believe and worship as we like, provided we extend those rights to all others.
The author claims superiority of mind to anyone foolish enough to espouse a religion. I would say that it takes an infin
The
Terrific article, well reasoned and eloquent.
With the election looking so good for Obama now, my thoughts turn to the next eight years. For the past thirty years, Dominionists have hijacked the Republican Party, effectively turning it into a theocracy. An Obama presidency and Deomocratic Congress will minimize the power of this group. What will happen to the Republican Party over the coming years? What will the election look like in 2012, and 2016? Can reason overcome anti-intellectualism and crackpot religion?
Also, I agree with Smartypants. Perhaps the Editor found the arguments too intellectual to be trusted. After all, how can monosyllabic "Six Pack Joe" trust anyone he can't understand?
