I think above all what bothers me the most is the lying that takes place in Washington. We have watched the very foundation of our nation decay over the last 8 years. I would have voted for Bush both times (I am active duty military and see voting for POTUS as a conflict of interest) and I shook McCain???s hand when he won New Hampshire in 2000. The John McCain of 2000 and 2008 are two different people. I followed his campaign and him very closely since 2000 and I can not believe how much he has changed. As I have moved forward in rank and responsibility I see the nuance of foreign affairs and international relations. Having been shot at both in Iraq and Afghanistan and I know there is more to a political answer then the black and white that we have received over the past 8 years. Only recently have we seen the nuance (Sec. Gates has done an incredible job) applied to our foreign policy. I am greatly disappointed that I see the continuance of this same thinking, the denial, the changing of facts, the foolish one sided views from the McCain campaign. I hate the people that are running Washington and what they have done to this country that I signed up to defend. I can't stand to see another Alberto Gonzalez stand before a panel in Congress and say "I don't recall"...or claiming executive privilege to circumvent the law. (Much like Palin is doing with the whole Trooper Gate thing in Alaska) I am tired. I am tired of the lies and the lack of honesty with the American people. The foolish portrayal of patriotism as the only means to an end

We are better then this...we deserve better then this. Do I think McCain deep down is the man that he has been over the past year while running for president, not completely. But how he has acted and who he has hired to run his campaign strikes at the very integrity of the man. I never thought I would say that. I've seen the wars that we are fighting and yes, they are much more complicated then we are publically being told. If McCain is elected I see the same people running this country, and it pains me to think of that as a possibility. It pained me to watch the Palin interview (both of them...for different reasons...ABCs because it was confirmed that Palin only knew what she was reading on a teleprompter and Fox's because Hannity was throwing softballs that my 1 year old could hit) and see how little she knew. I mean how hard would it have been to download the National Security Strategy from the Department of State website???or the National Defense Strategy, just published in June 2008???and read the damn thing. Seriously? How hard is that? Do you think if you want to be vice president you might want to be able to talk those pieces. Damn. She should have correct Charlie when he brought up getting Musharraf ???s permission to enter Pakistan???he wasn???t president at the time of the interview. Those two things would have shown me that the republicans were serious about this election and they were not playing on voter emotion???damn it???how hard is it to be substantive when you are running for the most powerful position in the world. Don???t insult me???don???t insult this nation??? It???s late people???and I am tired. It???s time for a change.

Is that the first essay that you have ever read?

I am really suprised that a person like Sarah Palin can come out and say, "I'm a Christian. I love Jesus" and people just believe her. I have news for any American who considers themselves a Christian. Maybe none of you have ever read the Bible, because if you had, you would have been exposed to God's teachings. He taught to love one another and not judge. He associate Himself with what society considered the lower classes, and extended His love to them. He would not want us to judge others. He would not want us to kill animals because they are in our way and rape our land. He would approve of social programs to help the less fortunate. Maybe these "Christians" only like the sound of the term, not the actual beliefs.

Being a Christian is not just about going to church on Sunday and telling people you love God. It is about a lifestyle of giving and understanding. Hating the gays, blacks, muslims or any other of God's children is the opposite of what He taught. He would CERTAINLY not approve of Americans, so blessed by Him, torturing His children in Guantanamo Bay (which Sarah Palin said in her RNC Speech we should continue).

This country is really suffering right now, and we need change. The change should come from someone who understands the needs of many of our neighbors. Obama has dedicated his life to service, as has McCain, but he is very much more in touch with the needs of people in the middle and lower classes.

If you really consider yourself a Christian, you will not vote for someone who is completely against Biblical teachings. You will force yourself to do what is riht for the majority of people in this country. You will be there for your neighbors to get them healthcare, education, and social understanding. Don't believe someone is a Christian just because they say so. Any person who has really built a relationship with God knows there is more to it than just your say so.

I suggest you really open your heart to Obama and Biden, because Sarah Palin is the idealogical opposite of what the Lord taught, and you can know that just by thinking about the golden rule.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 1:41:25 AM

Nope. Your wrong.I have been exposed to God's Teachings. The Bible teaches the opposite of most of your points. God said , that were to have dominion over the animals, that homosexuality was against His will, and you don;t get to heaven just by being nice to everybody. The murderous terrorists in Guantanamo are getting what they deserve. I'll forgive them in the Spirit of God, but that does not mean that their deeds go unpunished, and I will have no pity on them.

      • Posted By: yourwinter @ 09/23/2008 2:00:04 AM

Nope. You're wrong. Read the wrong book. God does not say slaughter all the animals for your own personal bloodthirst. He does not say persecute the gays. He says do not judge. I bet you aren't too perfect yourself. Maybe you should spend less time worrying about the gays, and concentrate on helping people who need healthcare (the sick, like Jesus did), or homes, or jobs, or an education. Let God judge for Himself.

As for Gitmo, you are exactly what evil people in this country want. A lot of the people in Gitmo have done nothing to us. We have used them in an attempt to extract information. This is not only against God's will, but every international law. If you think it is okay to do what we do in Cuba, then I guess you support the other side when they decapitate our soldiers- all's fair in war, right? We have killed many innocent people, which I guess means our military should be subject to the same standards you have applied to others. Newsflash- not all Muslims hate America. Not all Muslims want to kill us. You have been watching too much hateful television, and have not done enough learning about the history of the Middle East or Middle Eastern culture. There is a big world outside of your little town, and you should step into it.

Sometimes you have to be the change you wish to see in the world. I know that is hard for people like you, who think hating and torturing is okay because we are red white and blue. It is not. God said, Thou shall not kill. This one isn't rocket science. Maybe first grade science- which you clearly didn't pass.

Don't bastardize faith. It is not a justification for evil. It means something.

    • Posted By: gwenabee98 @ 09/23/2008 12:46:04 AM

That's interesting that you feel Obama is a "Christian" because if he was he would hold the same views as Palin and be more open about expressing those views. I have not heard him mention much about the fact that he is a "Christian" and how can you be a Christian and approve of abortion? He also went to a church where the preacher spouted hate at America; is that "Christian"? I think you need to take a good look at Obama and what he really stands for and I doubt seriously it's Christianity.

      • Posted By: yourwinter @ 09/23/2008 1:15:19 AM

You obviously are one of the people I accused of not actually reading the Bible, but I will clue you in.

We should be providing healthcare and education to people in this country. We should not engage in torture. These are values that are basic tenents of Christianity- helping your neighbor when they need it. They also happen to be tenents of this country. We should be leaders of the world with our open hearts, and not by brute force. We should not be engaged in a war that has killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians. It makes God sad when we kill each other over an inability to embrace our differences. The continuation of this war, something McCain and Palin want, is NOT what God would want.

As for abortion, I don't believe Jesus wants children to have babies. If you believe a pregnancy from rape is God's will as Palin does, you would say God wants young girls to be raped by men and then forced to carry a child to term. Then, that young girl, already a victim, would have to give up her rights to her own child. This is in no way what God wants. Being a Christian does not mean being against abortion. No one wants to have an abortion. But, scientifically, these are cells that cannot survive outside the womb. Carrying a child to term is more dangerous on the mother than an abortion. The "Choice" to do what is best for one's family should be an option. This is not a religious debate. The trick is to be for birth control and contraception education (which Palin is not), to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies. But you should not equate abortion issues with religion. Obama supports birth control and contraception education, and therefore, less abortions. Palin, by her own principles, supports teen pregnancy, which is probably not God's plan for young people.

My whole point was that if you are a true Christian, you prove it to the world by your actions, not by the rhetoric. You want him to prove it by spelling it out for you, because you don't realize what it means to be a Christian. If you did, you would have seen it in his work, and been embarassed at the abuse/ bastardization of Christianity by Palin.

I thought that we were a country with freedom of religion? Quite frankly i do not care what religion some one is as long as they do not run the country according to some misguided belief that God "made them do it". Every religion at its core, even Islam, believes that you do not do unto others that which you would not have done to you. Let's stop this Obama is a muslim stuff! Learn something about the religion, Obama's character and the quality of his relationships with his family indicate his quality. Palin's religion and the breakdown of her family and her lack of important governing qualities indicate her lack of ability to lead. Smartness has to be worth something, and quite frankly a degree from Harvard has to count for something....let's not hear any more about being elitist. It is silly!!

  • Posted By: robphil44 @ 09/22/2008 11:46:10 PM

We must not criticize any faith just because some of its messengers have a skewed version of it. Just as some Muslims have a skewed view of Islam, Sarah Palin's form of Christianity bears little or no relationship to that which is understood and practiced by mainstream Christians, and it certainly does not have sound scholarship to support it. If the beliefs which she espouses were even remotely close to Christian thought, I, too, would become an atheist.

Literal interpretations of the Bible make no allowances for the vast numbers of errors made in translation. They take no cognizance of what the words and phrases meant at the time that they were written.-The nuances of the colloquial idiom of the day and the wonderfully colourful use of words in the original Syriac are completely ignored.

Jesus spoke in parables: this was a common way of conveying ideas in that age and that society. Similar tools and subtleties abound throughout the Bible. Emperor Nero was referred to as 666, because that was the numerical equivalent of the letters in his name in Hebrew. As for errors: the classic example is that omission of a breath mark in the Hebrew word for "Rope" translates as "Camel" - and we get a metaphorical story which refers to a "Camel passing through the eye of a needle", instead of a "Rope". The true translation is still impossible, but not absurd.

Sarah Palin belongs to a branch of a Pentecostal church which was expelled from the AOG for its extremism. She does not represent Christian thought, and the sorts of belief which she has should make people of any faith, or none, very, very concerned.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 1:58:31 AM

Not so fast there RobPhil-- I'd say she is closer to mainstream Christian thinking than you are. But I am talking about non denominational thinking. Religion skews Faith in favor of adherence to man made doctrines and teachings against the Word of God, like praying to the Virgin Mary for example ( which is absolutely against God's word in the ten commandments). Non denominational Christians are free of bogus doctrine. Most american christians are moving away from man made religions and toward no denominatioanl fellowship.

Sam Harris is absolutely correct. Sarah Palin marks the end of the meritocracy. We have an education system in the US for a reason. We study, we learn, we prepare ourselves for our careers and the work that we choose to do. Palin is not prepared to be president. I am particularly concerned about her extremist religious views and her desire for armageddon.

Why do many of the obamabots regularly post their rants more than once on the same discussion board?

Are they so insecure in their opinion that they think (no, change that word to feel) that if they post the same rant more than once, it will somehow magically gain more validity and importance?

Do you have any rational reason for posting your 2 identical blogs within a minute and a half interval?

Are you demonstrating that the attention span of an obamabot is severely limited?

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/23/2008 1:46:06 AM

Wow, All at once you say that an education is all important, and then completely dismiss the idea that she has one? Also, Just becuase someone believes in God does not make them "Extremist" . I know in your world you have to be all the way to one side or another, but in the real world its not that way. Her religous views are not extremist. Osama Bin Laden's religious views are extremist. Palin's are quite normal for most of America.

As a thinking Christian, I'm glad someone finally looked critically at Palin. A literal understanding of Scriptures is one thing for a fundamentalist church, but don't force that unthinking creed onto the nation. Doing so is dangerous, and it also gives a bad name to the rest of us who call ourselves Christian but do not think we should throw science out of our schools in favor of a creation myth (Palin is a creationist, and yes, I hate to break it to you literalists, the creation story is a myth, meaning it connotes the deepest truth, but not literally). Please, for the love of this country, if you are considering voting for McCain/Palin, study history (I'd suggest the Crusades), learn to think critically, and act reasonably. So much is at stake in this election, and any thinking person should be uncomfortable with the potential second-in-command replying glibly when asked whether the United States might have to go to war with Russia, "Maybe so." What more illustration of Palin's incompetence could one need?

I guess I don't understand what everyone is afraid of. (Thank you "yourwinter" for your lovely post) Are you afraid that world leaders will once again respect us enough to talk to us? Are you afraid of the tax cuts for middle and lower class Americans? Are you afraid to abolish poverty in America? Are you afraid of humanitarianism and reaching out to the poor and underprivilaged in your communities? Are you afraid of changing what's been going on the past 8 years, the destruction of everything good about America? I don't understand!

Whats wrong with being ordinary? Last time i checked you didnt need to be super- human to be in a position of authority, you just needed to be good at what you do and willing to work for it. Once again it comes down to experience, which both Obama and Palin are unfortunately lacking. We will not know how they will handle the situation until the election has taken its course. And, "guaranteed ignorance"? A writer from Newsweek has no position to guarantee anything. Sorry, but please leave it as opinion and not a guarantee. All I can say is that it is up to us as Americans to inform ourselves, as it is hard to find forms of media that give us the proper and important information on one of the most important issues in the world.

  • Posted By: elvisatemydonuts @ 09/23/2008 12:02:35 AM

Every condescending half-baked idea so arrogantly expressed in this grotesquely smug diatribe by Sam Harris tells you much more about its author than anything said about Sarah Palin. This disgraceful and hate-filled rant so dripping with contempt, could easily have been applied to an untested Harry Truman as easily as Palin. The point that our reality-challenged and sad little reporter, Sammy-boy Harris misses over and over is that a great leader does not need an ivy league education to have authentic and keen leadership instincts and full of superior capabilities.

I'd trust Sarah Palin to make much better decisions than the "well educated" Barack Obama with regard to nuclear proliferation, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the economy, climate change, Russian belligerence, the rise of China, emerging epidemics, Islamism, the United Nations, American schools, energy, infrastructure and Internet security as Sammy's simple empty-headed article lists.

In fact, it's not even a close choice. And just a reminder Sammy -- she is #2 on the ticket. When it comes down to who's #1 on the ticket (McCain versus Obama) on all of these listed issues, it gets way beyond laughable for those of us with fully active cognitive function.

I am not a particularly religious person, but Sammy's intolerance and ugly cartoon depiction of Sarah Palin simply because she has a God-based belief system that he don't agree with makes him the ultimate "Ugly American."

Sammy, maybe you shouldn't think in such black-and-white terms when it comes to people of faith, and gain a little nuance when it comes to those you don't understand and publicly belittle. The funny thing is, they happen to be smarter than you.

"Sammy boy"..... you have to have lived in the racist hostility of the south to understand the offensiveness of that slur, and it is just that a slur! ...a slur used often to degrade intelligent black men; a slur that is one step away from the notorious "N" word. shame on you for attempting to use it here, and pity on you for having a mindset stuck in the darkest part of american history! ... you are the most complete definition of the word "Fool"

It's about time someone looked at Palin--and too large of a percentage of the American electorate--with an intellectually critical eye. Literal interpretations of religious texts are one thing for your unenlightened, unquestioning church, but they are downright dangerous in national leaders. Those who are so certain the Bible dictates (such anti-life) politics should learn a little history--study the Crusades and the history of slavery for examples of how previous generations were sure thieir dogmas justified behavior that can only be termed "sin." For the love of this country, learn to thinkg critically, get some education, and

When they say Elitist, they mean Well Educated. Senator Obama needs to call them out on this. His education -- gained honorably -- makes him capable of pulling together information on history, law, economics, foreign affairs. That's what education does. Everyone deserves it....and that's part of the message. Being educated doesn't make Senator Obama elitist, it makes him a leader who can find the information we need to keep hope alive.

"As a parent what do you think of the fact that Obama voted Pro-Infanticide and calls babies...burdens?"
this is exactly the kind of polarizing and irrational extremism the author is writing about. when people see the world as built out of good and evil they tend to see divergent opinions as something to be denigrated. if the world consists of good and evill, than the small differences are blown up into absurd caricatures (pro-choice is misrepresented as pro-infanticide). "if my side is good and just, then different opions are evil." it's not a good way for a president to think.

I will admit that Sara Palin may not be the most experienced V.P. candidate that we have ever seen. What astonishes me is that supporters of Barack Obama seem to have blocked out the fact that he is a relatively new junior senator with less meaningful experience than Palin. He's not just running for V.P., he's running for the Presidency! I haven't even mentioned some of his rather shady associates he has had, or the fact that his campaign is all about change, but he hasn't had much in the way of a real plan. He is a fantastic speaker....I will give him that!
