I don't know what scares me more; the points raised by this well written article or the criticism of it from people who think Palin is ready to become President. Oh wait, yeah I do - definitely the later. Have you people lost your minds???

We must not criticize any faith just because some of its messengers have a skewed version of it. Just as a tiny number of Muslims have a skewed view of Islam, Sarah Palin's form of Christianity bears little or no relationship to that which is understood and practiced by mainstream Christians, and it certainly does not have sound scholarship to support it. If the beliefs which she espouses were even remotely close to Christian thought, I, too, would become an atheist.

Literal interpretations of the Bible make no allowances for the vast numbers of errors made in translation. They take no cognizance of what the words and phrases meant at the time that they were written.-The nuances of the colloquial idiom of the day and the wonderfully colourful use of words in the original Syriac are completely ignored.

Jesus spoke in parables: this was a common way of conveying ideas in that age and that society. They were not regurgitations of actual events, but stories which made people think and "get the message". Similar tools and subtleties abound throughout the Bible. Emperor Nero was referred to as 666, because that was the numerical equivalent of the letters in his name in Hebrew. As for errors: the classic example is that omission of a breath mark in the Hebrew word for "Rope" translates as "Camel" - and we get a metaphorical story which refers to a "Camel passing through the eye of a needle", instead of a "Rope". The true translation is still colourful, still impossible, but not absurd.

Sarah Palin belongs to a branch of a Pentecostal church which was expelled from the AOG for its extremism. She does not represent Christian thought, and the sorts of belief which she has absorbed after more than 25 years in that environment should make people of any faith, or none, very, very concerned.

Palin is a Farce? I'd say the fact the democrats can't muster up more than 50% support for their candidate during a time when they claim the United States is at its lowest point in 80years and the republican President has bottom dwelling approval ratings, indicates that the Dems logic and platform is fundamentally flawed and out of touch with what the people of this country want. The Dems are the farce. If you can;t win an election under these conditions, then I don;t know how you could ever win one.

WHAT IS THE BRADLEY EFFECT? The difference between the number of people who actually vote for a black candidate and those who say they will or would.

Race Matters: Obama and the Bradley Effect
My gut tells me it could cost him the election.

    September 11, 2008 - by Stephen Green

EXERPT from the article (link below):

How to read the state polls as it relates to an impact (or not) from the Bradley Effect:

For SOUTHERN STATES, subtract 1% or less from Obamas support. It is in the South where I would expect the weakest Bradleys, and Obamas strongest over-performance with black voters.

In the NORTHEAST and the WEST COAST, Obama could lose as much as five percent . . . . but interestingly enough, that is not enough to cost him any of those states except perhaps New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

The entire west coast is a lock . . . but savvy betters might want to put some money on McCain in Oregon. Yes, Oregon. The MIDWEST AND MOUNTAIN STATES? Subtract two or three points. In the more URBAN-INDUSTRIAL MIDWESTERN STATES (and Colorado), black over-voting will again help compensate, limiting the damage Obama suffers from the Bradley Effect. But will it be enough? In Wisconsin it might be, in Missouri not so much.

To put it more bluntly, IF on election day OBAMA LEADS IN ANY GIVEN STATE BY ONLY 1-5%, then there is STILL A VERY GOOD CHANCE MCCAIN will win that state.

Is the BRADLEY EFFECT REAL? YES, it is. We have seen it before, as recently as the Democratic primaries. How will it play out? Obviously, the polls are of no help to us here, so we have to go on guts. And my gut tells me that the Bradley Effect could COST OBAMA MICHIGAN AND PENNSYLVANIA ??? AND THUS THE ELECTION.

We cant see a candidates internal polls, of course, but we can get an idea of what they say, by watching what the candidate does and listening to what he says. And in the last month, Obama has one-upped everyone on getting federal dollars to the Detroit automakers, and spent nearly all his time since the Republican National Convention campaigning in Pennsylvania. This, from a candidate who once threatened to force his opponent on the defensive in Republican strongholds.

Those days seem to be over ??? and the Bradley Effect is to blame.

Dear sir - while I am not a proponent of either party's candidates in the upcoming election, I would like to emphatically render the opinion that your diatribe is purely a strawman conjecture.

To say that more simply, so that YOU can understand it, you clearly exemplify the "dumbing down of america" by constantly presenting your own opinion as fact, and building your arguments upon those assumptions.

In short, your positions are fallacious and your suppositions absurd.

Perhaps you should seek a line of endeavor more suited to your expertise. I understand McDonalds is hiring.

I found your article insightful and did not interpret it as an attack on Sarah Palin's intelligence, but, on her legislative experience, education and understanding of national and global affairs. Of which, she needs to be as savvy about as any politician proclaims to be. I took a lot from your article, and unlike most media with a right leaning, you carried the full article without calling anyone names. Much appreciated. Thank you for taking journalism seriously.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/22/2008 11:46:10 PM

Nonsense. "right leaning media" That's a laugh. "Of which she needs to be as savvy about as any politican claims to be"? You mean as like Obama? who has less experience than she does? these comments are laughable.

What a ship of fools Newsweek has turned out to be. Write this same artilce with the supposition of Obama and then you are closer to the truth. Palin is #2 on a ticket, Obama #1. The Palin attacks are ignorant and downright foolish. If you want Obama to win, he must do so on his MERITS... just as he wants teachers to have to do to keep their jobs. Wrap your puny illinformed mind around that concept.

Think a little logically, please. Why would America hate elitism? Its because elitists are seen as self-absorbed money-seekers who have no other goals for their careers. Now, if a candidate understands the people, and is not elitist, the public feels as if it can trust that candidate. The candidate will serve in their best interest.

When it comes down to making a hard decision, its often a matter of the "greater good" vs "American good." Do we serve the world or our constituents?

That question is the reason elitism is so shunned, and rightly so.

  • Posted By: beinformed @ 09/22/2008 11:38:20 PM

What an idiotic article. has the world gone mad or just the biases media?

For balance, write the essay with the same suppositions on Obama, running on the number one slot.

The author of this column is suffering from severe delusions of personal competence. He needs a serious reality check. His pathetic attempt at painting Palin as some sort of deranged voodoo practioner is reprehensible regardless of your political beliefs. Did he ever consider the religious teachings of his own party's candidate?

It is amazing that the party who's candidate was taught by the treasonous "Reverend" Wright, could condemn the religious beliefs practices and teachings of any other candidate, and think the other party are the hypocrites.

It is amazing that the party who's Presidential candidate has the least experience and competency of any candidate in the history of the United States, could attack the qualifications of the other party's Vice Presidential Candidate.

It is amazing that they claim the other party's Vice Presidential candidate has inferior qualifications , when they are the exact same qualifications the last two Democratic Presidents had when they took office. (Clinton, Governor of Arkansas whose state population is less than some american cities, and who had no foreign policy experience at all but could play saxophone; Carter, Governor of Georgia, best known for his vast knowledge of Peanut Farming and a stint in the submarine corp).

It is amazing that this writer misses all these obvious facts, and instead writes a piece that insults the intelligence, beliefs, and patriotism of millions of americans, in a tone of utter contempt for the majority of citizens whom he obviously deems to be to stupid to vote for the candiate that he has deemed to be the enlighted chosen one.

I have some advice for the author:
Intellect does not come from college.
Never confuse a knowledge of the facts with actual wisdom.
Don't assume there is no God just because you think you are smart enough to take His place.
Never assume that people who believe in God are fools-- by the time you figure out they were right all along, it will be too late for you ( now who's the fool!).

Never assume one political party has all the right answers to all of the nations problems. If that were true, there would be no need for more than one party, now would there?

And lastly, Never assume that a college degree is, in and of itself, qualification to be President of the United States. Your candidate has NO other qualification for the job. He has spent his entire Senate Career running for President, so he doesn;t even have any reasonable experience as a Senator.

I could not disagree more with thie article. As POTUS, no person, male or female is going to make major decisions without consultation with their advisors, their staff, and those who have built a career at being the best in their particular field. In my opinion, common sense, proven experience, and the Ability to Lead are the most important pre-requisites to the office of POTUS. Just because someone has an Ivy League education does not make them a leader. That person should have a proven history before they ever get close to the White House. The McCain/Palin ticket is the only ticket that has the proven history to lead America.

Finally - a columnist with the guts and smarts to call Palin out for what she is! What a refreshing - if terrifying - article! I just hope our country regains its senses before November.

I found it quite amusing that the writer made such an issue of Palin's religious leanings. His conclusion that her religious affiliation made her unfit to be vice presidential material, was a great example of political satire. He's probably going to vote for McCain and just wanted to kick Obama's legs out from under him. i mean honestly...... the Reverend Wright's hate filled rants about America and white people surely turned Obama into a racist, right?

Mr. Harris: I assume the fact that Obama spent 20 years of his life enmeshed in the stupidity and irrationalism of his Black Nationalist congregation -- and dragged his children into this foulness as well -- means that you are right now writing an article about Obama's "ignorance" as well?

  • Posted By: Payne23 @ 09/22/2008 11:26:10 PM

What could possibly be more self centered Than saying; I don't have to research all views I just feel the right answer. Come on what value is that representing. The whole i don't blink philosophy sounds eerily similar to Dick Cheney's when he shot his huntin buddy in the face. I think a blink would have done someone some service then a lot like a few blinks before the war in Iraq. Since when does being God fearing recuse us from having to look at all the facts of a situation. Ignorance msked in faith is not the same as character. Pastor reminds me , in his last sentence, of the bible verse that states " they follow me with their mouths but their hearts are far from me.' I don't know chapter and verse but obviously he doesn't either or he could not support Republican policies. They belittle thepoor and the meek, they destroy the earth, and they claim greed is a great thing. I would love a copy of his Bible just to see where mine is wrong.

"You can learn about someone by the company they keep" Interesting...and you like William Ayers, Bomber of the Pentagon, and Obamas crazy preacher who he had a relationship with for 20 years. I am sorry for you. I am scared of Obama's inexperience. Despite your superior intellect, 85% of the country believes in God, and someone who professes that belief shouldn't be bared from holding public office. I understand Russia favors atheists as leaders, why don't you check how well they are doing.

just one note - I think what Mr. Harris has negated in his essay built on 'lack of experience' is that there is currrently a President in place who had more than enough 'experience', heck , his own dad was a President - he was deeply entrenched in the work of being a President - and , look what that got America. So, suffice it to say, I am much more impressed with what one is able to do intuitively and with natural ability than with so called 'experience'. The experience of the other 3 noted candidates ( Obama, Biden, MCCain) is also what got America to where it is today. I believe Palin is the most qualified of all the candidates 'cause she's the only one who isn't playing 'the game'....

I appreciate the clarity of this article. I think it demonstrates the superiority complex of the left. The idea that a regular person couldn't possibly have the talent and insight to be an effective President is ridiculous. Obama has made it clear that he has no clue how the world works. He has education, but no wisdom. And the idea that Christians are nuts who want to go bomb happy? Have you ever known a Christian?
