Let me take a SWAG. The writer is a NE liberal homosexual. I have not seen such sophmoric bleating since the days of Clarence Thomas. Mr. Harris, let me give you a clue. You are out of touch with a goodly portion of the population of America.

Wow another hit piece on Sarah Palin. Don't you guys get tired of writing these?
What an arrogant, snobbish piece of work. Only the "right kind of people" in Mr. Harris' opinion need apply. They apparently are the only ones with wisdom and intelligence. It does not seem to cross his mind that Senator Obama has no executive qualifications to speak of and that his history of radical politics and bolshevik-style militancy (by association when not practiced directly) might be highly unnerving to a large segment of the population. Governor Palin may be a heartbeat away from the presidency, but Senator Obama would be the actual heartbeat if elected. It may surprise Mr. Harris and some of the commentators below, but not all Ivy League educated individuals have a higher IQ or greater wisdom than a graduate of U. Idaho. As an Ivy League graduate, I feel qualified to say that. I also note that no one seems to credit George W. Bush with his two Ivy League degrees when they're busy calling him a dunce..
Great argument about the need to address the very real concerns of the present not to mention the future and the absolute necessity of electing someone with the proven experience to do that. Such a convincing argument that I've now decided that I can't risk voting for someone as unexperienced and unproven as Barack Obama. In fact, I will take the risk that Palin never becomes President and more or less goes the way of a Dan Quayle rather than vote for Obama. Voting for Obama guarantees that our leader, although well educated, and articulate with or without a teleprompter--will come into office untested and unqualified. The experience argument is convincing--against both Palin and Obama--and this argument leaves me with the only real choice, being McCain.
Spot on analysis and opinion as far as I am concerned. And I sure am concerned!!!
Mr. Harris, I'm guessing you realize this, but your article is going to fire up those who disagree with you and dislike the media in general. Some of these people may have voted for Obama, but they are going to switch to McCain because of the attacks on someone they want to like. We've seen this before. Even thought the rationale might seem solid, articles like this won't help elect Barack Obama. If the media would just allow natural events run their course, the public would have had an opportunity to form opinions about Governor Palin based on their own senses. Pushing so hard against her is going to put at least half of the voting public in her corner. If Obama wants to win he has to forget Palin and focus on McCain. Attacking a vice presidential candidate (who happens to be a woman) is not wise. Doubt me if you'd like, but watch and see how much support Governer Palin (aka McCain) gets on election day due to the perceived unfairness of the press.
Please do not vote!! You are too ignorant. OBama's qualification are his ability to analyse and understand the law of the land. He taught consitutional law, went to an ivy league school (which you never c ould get into). No need for affirmative action, did he accomplish what he was required to do in school.
I suggest you spend a little time to study the law insead of wring bs that you know nothing about.
Why must people always jump to these crazy conclusions? There is no Me vs You, no Us vs. Them, no Christian vs. Muslim (which by the way is what the people mean by "of faith" crap.) Claiming Obama has nothing is basically the same as McCain has nothing, the same as Hillary Clinton having nothing, and the same as Mitt Romney having nothing. These arguments are a joke. Go look up what each candidate intends and learn about htem before making up these pathetic jokes. We should want somebody smarter, not somebody dumber.

Mr. Harris expresses a fear about "the combination of ignorance and confidence ..." Mr. Harris, you just described Barack Obama's campaign. But Mr. Obama is just fine with Sam. The fact is, Mr. Harris simply doesn't care for either Republicans or people of faith. He's like any number of people -- he forgives the foibles of those he likes and damns those of folks he doesn't like. Mr. Harris, you should pull the log out of your own eye before seeking ... oh, never mind. He'd probably find that parable offensive too.

You are an idiot! Would you rather have Obama/Biden who want to tax the heck out of everyone and throw this country into an economic depression?!? This is the reason why I stopped getting Newsweek years ago - I was sick of elitist "reporters" who think they know what regular Americans think! You will have quite the awakening on election day! :-)
'tax the heck out of everyone and throw this country into an economic depression' ? first, you should find out more about the candidates' tax plans before tossing that tired old line into the discussion. what 'regular americans' make over $250,000/yr? second, have you not noticed that the economy is already depressed and getting more so?
And unless she goes down on her husband's coworker, she won't be impeached!!
Sam Harris wrote a good article. There sure is a lot of drivil and Republican propoganda in these comments, though. It's not worth trying to respond to any one of the anti-Obama attacks that are misinformed and innaccurate. But as to Sara Palin: well, look, she's not the first governor by far who was barely competent, vengeful, did not understand governent was dishonest. Take Spiro Agnew as an example. He resigned.
You are a moron. What a wreckless piece of journalism. What are you so afraid of sir? You obviously would never write an article about questioning Obama's past or present faith or the fact he is an Arab American and not an African American. Or the fact he was taught the Muslim faith as a young boy..... You disgust me. Your thought process for supporting this subject matter and not considering the obvious problems coming from Obama's past shows your are just ignorant.
Agreed. I would love to see a woman in the White House, but not her. She frightens me, simple and plain. It is a bit like, 'Legally Blonde - The Vice Presidency', sans the comic whimsy, because this is real life. She is a person of faith, and I won't fault her for that, but she hasn't done a real stellar job in convincing me that she can put that "unblinking" faith aside, when the situation calls for it, and make an informed decision. We all hardly know her.
Temple, not to worry, Sarah Palin is quite capable and will do a fine job. As for hardly knowing her, well, give her a chance. We hardly knew Obama, and we gave him a chance, and we got to know him, and now, we're through; we were not impressed with what we got to know about him. He appears self centered, and an "its all about me" person. He gives the impression that he thinks he is, somehow, "entitled" to be president. Sarah Palin, on the other hand, appears relaxed, sure of who she is, and very well prepared for public service. Of course there are some things she will need to learn, but so are there things Obama will need to learn, should he be elected, and I would rather a vice president do an on the job training program, than for a president to.
The people that know Palin, the people of Alaska, give her an 80% approval rating. If we had a President with that kind of rating we'd be happy...majority speaking.
Obama lies and you accept his lies without checking ANY of his facts. That won't do.
Excellent article. I am as fearful as the author about a Palin Vice Presidency (and potential Presidency). We all need to worry about this woman and her extremist views. Obama is a thoughtful, engaged man who courts intellectual stimlation and curiosity. One has the feeling that this woman has never thought deeply about critical matters. It all sounds frighteningly reminiscent of the current occupant of the White House.
Obama's extremist views don't bother you? Reverend Wright? Bill Ayers? Come on. It's just a matter of which extremist, Christianity or hate for America, appeals more or less to you.
klr, I'll just bet you are worried, and I so hope your worries become a reality. Obama a "thoughtful politician"...LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!! Excuse me while I get control of myself, can't seem to stop laughing over that! Yeah, hes thoughtful, alright, thoughtful about all the wrong things; I can just see the little thought bubbles over his head: "Hummm...now how can I work this to my advantage..." "What does Sarah Palin have that I don't have..." A Brain? Yeah! Thats got to be it! " Now...where can I find a brain..." Try the Wizard of Oz, Obama, if he could give one to the straw man. I'm sure he has one around somewhere he can dust off and fit you with.
More of the same elitist liberal nonsense we come to expect from Obamaweek. Some questions to ask; how did she win re-election as Mayor a couple of times? How did she win the governorship by beating an incumbent governor in a primary? How did she defeat a popular former democratic governor for the govenorship? How has she secured a 80% popularity rating? I'm still trying to figure out what Obama has achieved as an elected official. Can someone please point out one decision that he has made that improved citizens lives.
Unfortunately, Obama has never held an elected office were a decision he makes affects people???s lives. And he wants to be President? Now that is truly scary.
Obama should go back to Illinois and run for governor so he can have a record of achievement that matches Sarah Plain???s. Then he will be ready to run for President.
Mr. harris. You simply not only don't "get it", you , in your arrogance, never will. Snobbery, elitism, arrogance, "superior" phony intelectualism, ad on nauseum. I've seen highly educated men and women brought to their knees when they simply couldn't figure out certain circumstances. What nerve you have to simply dismiss Sarah palin, as a commoner. I assume, you mean "blue collar" citizen? And in certain circles this means little or no "education." Talk about looking down one's nose -whew. Since when was religion a bad word? I can accept your atheism; how about giving some slack to those of us who give a little credit to a higher power? Go Sarah! I'm behind her all the way, and it's not only because she professes a Christian belief.
To suggest that people from rural states with religious convictions are somehow incapable of govern anything more than their own lives is to ignore our countries??? history. Abe Lincoln was a man from rural Illinois with deep religious convictions. He blamed the Civil War in his 2nd Inaugural Address on the wrath of God for the evils men had committed. Yet it was this same conviction to something greater them himself that caused him to take action and to succeed where so many others had failed. Are we so high and mighty to discount Lincoln???s ability and judgment in saving this union and setting right a country on the brink of failure? Teddy Roosevelt insisted it was his time spent in North Dakota, not New York City, that prepared him to be President. Don???t dismiss us as ignorant hicks, we grow you food, drill for your oil, and mine your coal. What has New York given us? A 700 billion dollar bill.
On the $700 billion bill -- don't forget Washington DC -- both Republican-led and Democratic-led Congresses were asleep at the wheel on this one. Any bailout bill should include the resignations of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
Thank you, groves, that was very well put.
indeed.
Any analysis of Sarah Palin's experience does nothing but highlight the deficiencies in Obama's record. Contrast work as a "community organizer" with a staff of 12 and a budget of $300,000 and the Governorship of Alaska with a staff of 1,500 and a budget of $11 Billion. Maybe Mr. Harris' "education" failed to include mathematics.
We already know that it failed any lesson in humility.
