Any analysis of Sarah Palin's experience does nothing but highlight the deficiencies in Obama's record. Contrast work as a "community organizer" with a staff of 12 and a budget of $300,000 and the Governorship of Alaska with a staff of 1,500 and a budget of $6 Billion. Maybe Mr. Harris' "education" failed to include mathematics.

We already know that it failed any lesson in humility.

I had to keep checking to see whether you were still writing about Palin or if you had switched to Nobama.

  • Posted By: überKerl @ 09/22/2008 8:55:28 PM

Give me a break! Sam Harris, why are you worried about the control over nuclear weapons? Ronald Reagan was virtually senile, Bill Clinton was often ... um ... preoccupied in the Oval Office and George W. Bush is a real moron. Considering how much the best and brightest of the Ivy League have totally screwed things up, let's give the woman from the University of Idaho a chance.

I do not fault Palin for who and what she is in her person hood. She is all-American; but she should not be seriously considered to be president given McCain's age. She is fine in her present position. The world we know is falling apart. Palin is no5t the answer. On the other hand Mike Bloomberge is the right person. I hope Obama will appoint him as an economic czar.

Sam Harris' ignorance is guaranteed by his breathing.

  • Posted By: Donna1000 @ 09/22/2008 9:29:02 PM

I have read page one of this drivel and think you could substitute "Barack Obama" for "Sarah Palin" in almost every sentence. Given that the current President is a graduate of two Ivy League universities, one could reasonably argue that the Ivy League is the LAST PLACE we might want to go for our next President.

Oh Lord! What about Obama without a teleprompter. Go to jibjab! This guy is a joke! Again, it would be so nice if all of the liberals would leave and create their own country and leave normal people alone! Go to Russia! Go to Cuba! Say the stupid things you say here, there!

You and others of your ilk are concerned for Governor Palin's intellectual credentials because you live in what you perceive as a complicated world. This world is much less complicated then you understand. The rules of the playground apply. Eat or be eaten. Fight or Run. Deal from strength or beg from weakness. My mom, who is 87, could run this country just fine. She isn't up to speed right now, but take her away from her sewing club, her knitting and her Canasta group and I guarantee she would be up to speed on world and national affairs in 6 months. Oh, she wouldn't have all your fancy shmancy words, but she would know bull *** when she heard it, and would be able to look another person in the eye and know when they were lieing. Sarah Palin may not have the intellectual pecadillos that you and them like ya' love to bandy about, but she knows a duck when she sees one and whether the duck should be on the menu or not.

What you are is a communist. You're a communist and you don't know it. During the cultural revolution in China, they got rid of the educated "elites"... the doctors, engineers, economists, and technocrats... because Mao believed that the common proletariat peasent, who wasn't hindered by the burdens of education, were the best able to run the country. And so when Mao came into power -- who really had the best of intentions when he came up with the Great Leap Forward -- he proceeded to run the country into the ground because he had no idea what the f*ck was doing. Afterall, he thought he knew best. He told peasants to melt their iron pots and pans to help the country increase their supply of iron ore. He told officials to send all their food to the cities. Millions ended up dying of starvation. Anybody can run the country?! Your grandma can run the country?!? What you are is a loser who, in your unfathomable narcissism, WANTS to believe that deep down, even you -- a common loser -- can run the country. And so Palin's ascension confirms your own desires of personal greatness. Hey, if Palin can do, so can I!! What you want is to knock the "elites" down a peg. You want to believe that everyone is as dumb as you are. It's communism at its worst.

      • Posted By: ronadolph @ 09/22/2008 9:16:51 PM

You make my case Mike. In the real world you would have to face me and talk your trash and I would blink your lights for ya'. Doesn't work that way in cyberspace, you get to call people names and demonstrate your ignorance for all to read, but without real world consequences.

    • Posted By: practicalone @ 09/22/2008 5:52:20 PM

In some ways, you are right. It's nature. Everything eventually dies. Every civilization eventually crumbles. To say that it isn't complicated... well my definition of complicated might be different from yours. Take the right to keep and bear arms. Like the NRA says, "when Nukes are outlawed, only outlaws will have Nukes." To me, that's complicated.

I can almost see your cabin. You are funny. Peccadillos? Duck on the menu? Sorry, your mom could not be president. Peccadillos?

Sorry two c's Peccadillos, neither animal nor vegetable.

To wmcmahon: Obama ignorance? He was at or near the top of his class at Harvard Law, and editor of the Harvard Law Review. Have to be a real dummy to do those things. On the other hand McCain was at or near the bottom of his class at Annapolis and only got in because of who his father was. Hmmmm....where is the lack of intelligence?

    • Posted By: star3 @ 09/22/2008 9:15:11 PM

And yor point is.....? I'll bet Hitler was at the top of his class, too, but poor Albert Einstein was not. Being intelligent and being smart do not, neccessarily, go hand in hand. Hitler was intelligent, he was not, however smart. If he had been, he would have realized his plan could never work and was doomed to die in empty dreams---horrible dreams, I might add.

    Hi Sam,

Take notice, there a few of us that . . .
    (1) Don't believe Ivy League degrees indicate anything but paper
    (2) Don't trust those surrounded by Ivy League partners
    (3) Don't follow those with Ivy League ambitions
    (4) Do ignore the talkings of those from the "Ivy League"

You may term this "ignorance" . . . I just term this "being humble".

I would prefer to listen to Sarah . . . than yourself.

As to your view of intellectual . . . you need a bit of work, but you too might aspire to be as good as Sarah.

    Yours,

    RememberTheAlamo

Hey, I'm a Christian working mom, just like Sarah Palin. And that's where our resemblance ends. You can call Sarah Palin many things, but intellectual would not be one of them. It took her 5 years and 6 colleges to get a degree in communications. Communications is what dumb athletes "major" in so they can get scholarships to play for college teams. Even with this stellar untainted-by-the-Ivy-League education, she still couldn't manage to write her own acceptance speech for the RNC, it was crafted for the fill-in-the-blank candidate well before she was appointed as McCain's VP nominee. You can keep Sarah, thanks, just please keep her out of the White House.

The last few decades have been democrats preaching that they are ordinary too, just like joe six pack, they can relate to joe six pack. All of the sudden, they criticize a republican for doing a similar thing. Typical democrat hypocritical soapbox speech.

interesting how we all know government is the problem we all know that the sheep (US citizens) think it is someone else's rep who is the problem and yet we always seem to look to Washington to solve the problems that Washington has created. We are not victims we are fools we are the regulatory agency of the gvt and the constitution says as much but we have abdicated the responsibility to 'elitists' in Washington. Now an outsider comes along and vilify her for not being one of them. Push all 545 of them out and start over or quit whining.

"We the ppl have never elected a person that either was a lawyer or Military person ( from a Military school, back in the day all a Military person had to do was serve).

for some reason ppl think yale/ harvard is elistist but going to Military school is not ..
going to Military school can get a person high paid postions in criminal justice, the Pentagon, the FBI, ect, ect... going to Law school can get you high paying jobs as well ( however, not all lawyers make wealth)....

Elitism....... is really what ppl consider to be wealthy ( it use to be just the RICH) NOW it's the elistist school you attend, the elistist coffee you drink, the elitist way you talk, the elitist fundraiser, the elistist hair cut, the elistist marriage, the elitist wine you drink, the elitist house, the elistist cars...

old money vs. new money is not my concern; those are the Elite....

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/22/2008 7:30:04 PM

Elitism isn't a matter of money, it's the idea that just because you went to college, or law school, or read a lot, that you know what is better for people than they do, especially people you look down on because they haven't had the opportunity you did to go to expensive boarding school in Hawaii, or two expensive colleges (what were his grades in college btw, why won't Obama release them???), or had someone pull some strings so you could get into Harvard.

And then someone else pulled some strings to get you credit for bills you didn't work on in the Illinois senate so you could get elected to the US Senate (and some strings pulled there too to eliminate your opponents).

And so Obama thinks he knows what is best for conservatives, and complains that they don't vote their own interests.

Bill Clinton nailed Obama's problem today on the View. Clinton pointed out that when you are desperate, don't know where the rent or money for food and power are going to come from, then your first and most important concern is economic. But when you reach a point where you are a bit more secure, and feel you can handle the financial demands placed on you, then other things become priorities, religion, women's issues, abortion, guns, etc.

Everyone doesn't vote based on what will be to their advantage economically. Some people look beyond the money to things which they think are more important. The fact that Obama thinks everyone should only concerned about money reflects what he thinks is important.

      • Posted By: glimps @ 09/22/2008 9:01:19 PM

Elitism is wealth. ( should the ppl condem the rich)?

just because an individual goes to a good school "Elite" does not make that individual think that he/she is better ( the ppl make he/she think that they are better ).going to college is bettering themselves.. he went to Columbia & got excepted to Havard w/ high grades ( he wasent at the bottom of his class).

Of the little we know about Sarah Palin she certainly does have the appearance of a zealot. I'm not an atheist or a Democrat (it's odd that I have it quantify that) and yet there is clearly something unnerving about a politician who shares Sarah Palin's views on abortion, stem cell research, creationism, ect... The 1st Amendment both protects religion from the interference of government and protects government from the interfence of religion. As an Independent, Palin represents a fundamentaly flawed notion of government and a convoluted sense of the role of religion.

A dramatic scene unfolded today at 30,000 feet as the press accompanied Obama to his next campaing stop. Several members of the media tearfully approached the candidate an expressed regret that their efforts had not so far led to a more substantial lead in the polls. "We have been trying. I wan't you to know that, Barack" said a reporter for MSNBC. The candidate warmly smiled and said that he knew that he did not doubt her sincerity. "I know. I know." he said. A reporter for Newsweek wondered what else they could be doing. "Barack you just give the word on we are on it" Mr. Obama suggested wall to wall TV and newspaper coverage of the Keating Five in the week prior to the election would be very helpful. A reporter for the New York Times said they werre ready to go on that front. "Thank you" said the candidate. "is there anythying else? Anything else we could be doing?' asked a reporter from CNN. "I will sleep on it," said the candidate.

Thank you, Mr. Harris, for putting into words what I have been trying to express for many weeks.
I will not be accused of bashing, so I will bash myself.
I am an elitist. I am a liberal.
I am smart. I blink when faced with an important decision.
And I have waited for eight long years for a moment like we are seeing now.
Don't blow it this time, America.

  • Posted By: JenFiz @ 09/22/2008 8:50:28 PM

Oh, Mr. Harris... tsk, tsk, tsk. There's academic intelligence and there's emotional intelligence. Obama trips all over himself trying to make a decision, a weakness he is well known for, because he's looking for the 'right' answer. And for experience, come on. We all know by know that, all together now, he 'served only 143 days in the Senate.' In politics, he who hesitates is devoured.
Conversely, Palin knows how to make decisions and take action. And, ahem, everyone knows that women are natural networkers. However, whereas Clinton (yes, I know she's not in the race) would be much too proud to seek advice, Palin knows who she is, on *every* level, and doesn't need to secure an identity based on her job alone (sorry, Hillary).
The bottom line is that she'll be much more effective than Obama could ever hope to be.
