Thank you, Mr. Harris, for saying everything that has been spinning around in my brain but which I have been unable to state so clearly and thoroughly. The arrogance... pride, even, of their ignorance and mediocrity makes my blood boil. Right after Sarah Palin was chosen, I responded to an online article that I simply could not grasp the concept of choosing a leader based primarily on their "sameness" to oneself. I don't want someone "just like me" as Vice President. I want someone who will inspire me and amaze me with their intellect, knowledge and wisdom. I'm not a hillbilly, but I'm certainly not smart enough for the job, and am not ashamed to admit it. Very few people are equipped for a job of that magnitude, and Sarah Palin will NEVER be in that "elite" group. Never. Being intellectually ordinary is not a shameful trait. But for Palin to be so blindly confident in her readiness and righteous "rightness" when her credentials are, in fact, so obviously substandard, is not only shameful and delusional, but dangerous and terrifying.

Sarah Palin is everything Hillary ever wanted to be. A Self made woman who did not ride into elected office on her husbands reputation..

Anyone want to tell me about Harry Truman's "intellectual training"?

The writer is an idiot who is trying to justify his own prejudices.

Oh My God. The liberals have sunk to an all time low. Well, if Sam wants to talk about religion, let's talk about religion. Do you want to hand the nuclear codes to a man who followed a pastor that said that AIDS was an invention of the white man or that september 11 was God's punishment.
There are over a billion Christians who believe as Govenor Palin does, many of whom are professors, lawyers and even neurosurgeons. Is this man trying to say that they're stupid too?
If we're to follow Sam's reasoning there shouldn't even be elections at all. We should just give all the canidates an IQ test amd elect who scores the highest.
Govenor Palin is a proven reformer and a hard worker. Whatever she dosen\t know she can learn.
She is not rrunning for president.
    However, Barak Obama is.
How can anyone feel comfortable making a man who was in the senate for only 143 days the president of the united states of america? He has never made a tough descision or crossed his party lines on a major issue. The only thing he did was vote present.
Are those the qualiteis that the most powerful man in the world should have?

It's hillarious to see you Democrats squirm in light of a VP candidate that outshines your Presidential nominee. Here's a woman who defeated corrupt politicians in her own party and lowered taxes for all of her state among her many accomplishments. Name just one thing Obama has ever accomplished other than being elected?

Oh and by the way, tjones, your childish name calling only confirms your intellectual deficiencies, if I were you I would stay off of message boards, you are only embarrassing yourself.

Deep concern in the Obama camp as campaign spirals beyond their control. "We thought that this would have been wrapped up by now" said Kwansi Mifune a top Obama strategist. "But things are pretty much even in the polls and there is a lot that we cannot control moving forward. The only thing we can count on is the press continuing to be as biased as they have been so far. "

Thank you Sam Harris for telling it like it is. Sarah Palin???s Neanderthal thinking represents a threat to this country and to the world greater than even George Bush. Her religious fanaticism makes her far more qualified for a room in a mental hospital than an office in the White House.

I may have given this reply to another post, but it fits this as well. Read a little about Michael Faraday--thought by many to be one of the greatest men of science in the modern age. He had very little formal education, and was a devout man of God.

Exactly! I don't want another leader who I can 'drink a beer with.' I want one who is experienced and educated. Palin is neither of those things. And both her and McCain are liars. I don't want either of them representing me.

While knowing how to fix a flat tire or shut off water to one's house are better served with common sense than a PhD in astrophysics, the problems of the presidency are far from common and the common person is far far far from capable of solving these incredibly complex problems with the same common sense required to change a flat tire. While I'd prefer Palin to help me with my snow chains or anchor my local news channel, that in no qualifies her to address the huge problems this nation and world are facing. She has other qualifications, which are relevant, but they are extremely limited in my opinion, and her, Obama's, and McCain's qualifications and experiences should be very relevant to you, because their experience and understanding of problems will be informed by understanding the issues and the failings of potential responses to these problems. You can't just make up a resolution to international crises with common sense and a charming personality.

Since you are interested in "reason," let's reason together. With candidate A we have an experienced person who can be president and an inexperienced VP who might become president if something tragic occurs with Candidate A.
With Candidate B we are guaranteed to have an inexperienced person and a VP who tends to be an unserious comic.
Reason dictates the odds of our having an inexperienced president is to support Candidate B.

-Yeah, the latter never needs to reach the oval office... sadly, you can't even spell intelligence.

-Oh great... she's another, "I have a drink with that lady!"

I don't want another politician who I can have a beer with. I want one who is experienced, intelligent, and honest. McCain and Palin are none of those things. As a woman, I find it ridiculous that various people spout the reason of electing her as 'I want a woman vice-president' . There are far more capable women out there. Leave her in Alaska. I don't want her to represent me.

Mr. Harris, you have some real issues in your thinking and I suggest you seek some professional counseling, I sense hostility and paranoia coupled with a leftist philosophy.. It seems that the democrats keep trying to compare Obama vs Palin, since McCain's experience in every traditional presential sense far outshines Obama's. However if my only choice was to vote Obama or Palin, I would choose the later. Why? Obama is a career politican, in the game for himself. Sure he wants a better America but first and foremost he's on a planned career path. Obama is a fabulous speaker with teleprompters in front of him and his speaking ability rivals some of the best infomercial stars on the cable channels. He promises just about everything to everyone, except free beer and wings during Monday night football. Palin on the other hand is a citizen servant that saw where she could help out her community, town, state and now country and has stepped up to the challenge. She may not have an Ivy league degree like Obama, Bush (W), Clinton and Bush H, but she is of the people and will put the needs of the people first. When it comes to making decisions there is a big difference between an ivy league education and God given intellegence suplemented with real world experience. I know many indivualds with degrees from prestigious universities and although many of them are considered brilliant, many have no idea how to change a flat tire or shut off water to their house if a pipe were to burst. I'm just fine with Sara, she's real, she's steady and will hire the best and brightest to assist her in changing this country. For the past 20 years we've had a president that graduated from Yale or Harvard it's about time we break that string of Ivy League ideas and go with CHANGE, we don't need 4 more years of an Ivy League President. McCain/Palin offers this country the best of both worlds.

Mr. Harris, what Palin does not know about Islam and the other things you discuss is the same thing she knew about energy and being a Governor. That is, not a darn thing until she had to know, and then she proved herself a very quick study. You raise a spurious argument - *no one* knows "all about" the laundry list of issues you bring up. Yet you jump at the conclusion that because Palin might not know where Berkina Faso is, she must be ignorant. It seems to me, then, by force of you own logic, that since Palin knows how to get elected governor of a state and you apparently don't, you must be even more ignorant than she is. I could go on to the defects in the rest of your article, but they are self-apparent.

The same group that put George W Bush in office and the Iraq War and this economic mess the country is facing are responsible for the McCain/Palin ticket. The people of this country need to see that electing mediocre people to office creates problems that affect us all. Just think about McCain or Palin controlling our nuclear arsenal. We need level headed diplomacy and thoughtful planning. Save the country. Vote Obama/Biden in 2008.

    • Posted By: Searchin4Turth @ 09/22/2008 7:29:55 PM

Let me get this straight...you don't want mediocre people in the White House, but you're voting for Obama??????????
      You're kidding, right?

  • Posted By: Bluegrass Woman @ 09/22/2008 6:19:44 PM

To Searchin4Truth....you are so wrong on so many levels. Obama is African and European American. Where do you whites in America get so much wrong info? Either way, he is American by birth....you no doubt are of German American roots (that must account for that Nazi mentality). However, "A fool convinced aganist his will, is of the same opinion still". And by the way, Palin is as dense as a bag of hair.

    • Posted By: Searchin4Turth @ 09/22/2008 6:46:58 PM

You didn't do your own search, did you? I said don't blame me for telling the truth and you go and call me a Nazi??? I could say a lot of things about your credability and intelligence, but I won't.
I want you to CHECK OUT what I wrote, do your own seach and THEN give me proof I am wrong.
If you can't do that, I will know you CAN'T TAKE THE TRUTH and will vote for an Arab-(maybe) American.

      • Posted By: tjones1942 @ 09/22/2008 7:26:43 PM

There is no fool like an old fool and you and McCain are both a couples of old fools. You put Bush in and are responsible for the economic mess we are now facing and you don't have a wit of proof yourself regarding Senator Obama's heritage. He is Hawaiian, born in Hawaii, the 50th state of the USA. You are a pinhead in the words of O'Reilly. Get a life. What a jerk.

Even if he was Arab, which he is not, why would it matter? We should not be focused on gender, race, or anything like that (although age has some legitimacy due to neural/synaptic degradation) . We should be focusing on ability, ideas, experience, and ability to use correct judgment given real evidence. Obama has shown an ability beyond the other three to properly analyze the data and evidence before making a decision, which is what we want/need in a leader.

But if you want to keep echoing the extreme right-wing religio-fascist talking points, by all means continue. Hopefully someday you'll grow up and realize that in the real world there are real issues beyond the bait they put out there to get "values voters". Do yourself a favor and stop being a back pocket sheep and begin to think and analyze for yourself.

Please please please, Sam's article isn't a personal attack on Sarah Palin, it's about her lack of intellectual and cultural preparation to become POTUS. The comparison with Obama shows precisely where she's deficient; Obama is an intellectual, a former law professor, who's thought deeply and written about many of the issues facing the nation.

Palin appears to have nothing similar to offer apart from her religious faith and an unblinking certainty that she's right. How much has she thought, how much does she know about racism, economic inequality, climate change, let alone economics or international affairs? Very little, judging by the superficial and vapid comments she's made about them - where she's said anything about them at all.

To choice someone like her as VP, particularly on the part of a 72-year-old man with poor health, is an act of the most breathtaking recklessness and cynicism.

Once again, I'm NOT attacking her as a human being, or as a small town mayor, or even as Governor of Alaska (though plenty who know her better would) - just echoing Sam's point, that being POTUS requires deep intellectual and cultural preparation.

    • Posted By: Searchin4Turth @ 09/22/2008 7:25:30 PM

Obama has done NOTHING, except vote "present" nearly as much as he has voted "yea" or Ney" . Of course Obama has written FICTION as fact. Obama isn't even black as he PRETENDS to be. Obama is an Arab-American. Good luck with that. Didn't you ever wonder about all those Arab family names?
Palin has the highest rating of any governor of any state in the Union.

Now you can use your highly respected (by you) intellect to check out what I have written before you call me some childish name.
