Good article. Too bad Newsweek's editors undermined the important message it contains by calling the piece in the headline an "atheist attack" piece by a "noted provocateur." Doing so sets up the reader to think of it as simply an angry rant by someone whose sole aim is to provoke, when in reality it makes intelligent arguments for why Americans shouldn't consider Palin fit for office. Shame on you, Newsweek, for such lack of integrity, or cowardice, or whatever it was that motivated your choice of headline and subhead.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Those cynical Republican strategies know how to manipulate people who already have a chip on their shoulder about feeling poorly educated or, frankly, not so smart. Instead of educating them, it's so much easier to exploit their narcisissistic wounds to the strategiests' advantage - -- and out country's detriment.

Just one question -- when are you going to write the same things about Obama and his "beliefs" and his "affiliations". You are all nothing but a no-good bunch of biased people trying to ruin this country.

I hate how idiot religious freaks (mostly referring to super-Christians I've actually known) use "God told me to do it" as an excuse for irrational and/or poor decisions. Blaming one's stupidity, ignorance and impulsiveness on God...what a cop-out.

This is especially scary in the context of war, nuclear weapons, etc., especially since these same people would justify such actions as doing God's bidding, etc. and would do so under the belief that they will be rewarded in heaven.

Sound familiar to anyone? Religion joins money as the root of all evil...

Since Palin is an inveterate liar, there' s no point in asking her about her religious beliefs; she'll simply spin them in a way that her handlers tell her to.

As to Harris's main point...the celebration of ignorance and mediocrity...he's right on target.

Susan Jacoby's recent book 'The Age of American Unreason" details the development of the celebration of religious ignorance as a primary American value. And Palin has it in spades. She's part of the reason America is losing its place in the world. Just as Saudi Arabia and Iran are 3rd rate countries because they let religion govern everything about them, so are we in danger of doing the same.

While I agree with Mr. Harris' concern regarding American support of mediocrity in positions of power, his opinions about Sarah Palin's religious beliefs are ignorant and extreme. His comments about her understanding of the will of God are particularly disturbing. Within the Christian tradition there have been varied perspectives on this mysterious subject. How can he know her position without asking her directly? I'm not a fan of Sarah Palin, but Mr. Harris' references to Ms. Palin's faith are reminiscent of the "Washington in the lap of Rome" comments heard during John Kennedy's campaign. The Presidency of the United States is simply the most exceptional job in the world. Only exceptional and highly-qualiifed individuals should be considered for it. It is absurd (not to mention offensive!!) that the Republican party would select an unqualified person as their VP candidate. They selected Palin because they needed to reach a demographic that McCain couldn't reach on his own; as a result of their selection, they mock the American people as ignorant fools, devalue the importance and impact of the VP role, and put our nation at risk. My election day hope is that We As A People recapture our dignity and pride in America and vote ... for anybody but McCain-Palin.

An elitist acting elitist. What a shock! This "person" is exactly the reason that, since 1953, the Republicans have held the White House for 36 of the last 56 years. That would be 64% vs 36%. This piece of @#$% would fit better at HuffPo, Daily Kos or Democrat Underground. Come to think of it, Underground is where this dung belongs.

Check this clip about 7:20 in - http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/10/01/ac.palin.latest.cnn

I think the comment from the Republican strategist says it all:

"You only need a few facts to tell people - to give them a sense of what you're talking about. You speak with your heart. You don't speak with your mind if you want to reach the American people. That's what makes a great candidate."

If I was American I would be highly offended by that notion.

Harris misses significantly many of the reasons average Americans react to "elitism". Firstly, many of his points about Palin's inexperience, the company she keeps, and her desire to accept any challenge could be applied directly to Obama. It is not that average (not extremist) American's don't want "elite" leaders, what they don't want is "elitist" leaders. Harris's tone exudes what people react to: "I am enlightened and you are not. If you were you would believe as I do." Ironically, this sounds entirely like the far right religious crowd that Harris and others react to.

Sam Harris nails it. The possibility of a Palin presidency is absolutely unnerving. This woman has shown no prior interest in International or Global Affairs. She is not well travelled or well educated. The woman is simply not prepared to enter the stage as a world leader. McCain's selection of Palin for the (vice) Presidency at a time of such stunning crisis is absolutely irresponsible of John McCain and shows he chose politics over country first!!

SArah Aplin has been in a executive position as Governor for 2 years., which is more that McCain, Obama, & Biden. Biden's "Gun stance" Fau Puax showed you how an out of touch politician will say anything to get acceptance at this gathering. No fuill well Obama stance restance on Gun control legislation.

Palin's performance on Thursday will be the turning point. If she says anything stupid THIS time, it will be the last straw -- I can't see the Republican Party going through with this. She'll have some excuse to resign, and they'll draft Huckabee or Romney to replace her. You've hit the nail on the head. Any other decision would be crazy; the best the Republicans could hope for by keeping Palin around would be that they would LOSE.

honestly, it's as simple as this: anyone who supports sarah palin is either deluded or they do not pay attention at all.
how anyone can blindly support that woman is beyond me.
and just for the record, YES sarah palin has executive experience (less than two years, mind you,) but think about where she governs. ALASKA. and what is the population of alaska? 157,000.
barack obama at least is a part of FEDERAL government so he already has some say in how our country should be run. he definitely has more qualifications to lead our COUNTRY than sarah palin does. anyone who says otherwise is literally crazy.
also approval rating is yes, important. but it is only relevant when the people are EDUCATED and not BLINDLY following someone.
