I am sick and tired of hearing about Palin's so called 'experience' as Governor of Alaska. She has absolutely no substance to her let alone intelligence. She gets up in front of crowds of people as Sen. McCain's opening act and regurgitates the same pathetic lines that have been proven to be false time and time again but nobody seems to be concerned that the Palin and McCain are lying directly to their faces. McCain then goes on TV shows and reiterates her lines as fact when they are FALSE!! The Bridge to Know Where, the luxury jet, the chef, the pipeline, supplying 20% of America's energy, etc. These so called experience issues have been embellishments and flat out lies but her supporters do not seem to care. Goes to show how Republicans are easily distracted by shiny objects. Also, being a great leader involves more than just experience attributes like communication and judgement qualify too. Considering Palin doesn't blink much communication with other nations is pretty much out of the question and in terms of judgement Obama was right about the War in Iraq from the very beginning. For those independents check out FactCheck.org for credible information on both campaigns.

These Rove-ites are not only above the law (Dub absolutely proved this beyond a doubt), but they are above sin. Self-proclaimed Christians who lie straight faced right into your eyeballs and the crowd goes crazy. Drill, baby, drill! Nothing to report. All quiet on the Western Front.

Let me confess that I was genuinely unnerved by Sarah Palin's performance at the Republican convention. Given her audience and the needs of the moment, I believe Governor Palin's speech was the most effective political communication I have ever witnessed. Here, finally, was a performer who???being maternal, wounded, righteous and sexy???could stride past the frontal cortex of every American and plant a three-inch heel directly on that limbic circuit that ceaselessly intones "God and country." If anyone could make Christian theocracy smell like apple pie, Sarah Palin could.

Interesting that all of the presumptuous gasbags who fear the doctrines of Palin's church have so little difficulty with the crackpot theories of Obama's pastor. You know.,the one he had to be separated from with a crowbar?Yes.That one.In liberal la la land its an unforgivable sin to believe in biblical teachings but if you tend to froth at the mouth about government conspiracies to exterminate black folk. thats quite understandable. How stupid are liberals? A question with no real anser

Obama joined up with wright when he was a community organizer because churches were the best way to help people and wright was a powerful force in that community.

don't you find it fascinating that people are more concerned with a pastor who encourages their congregation to pray for the things they want in their life than a pastor who says God Damn American. that's what this article should be about. Let''s talk about that pastor.

Obama repudiated his pastor's beliefs. Has Palin?

    • Posted By: n7r3pyd @ 09/22/2008 2:32:45 PM

hmmm. Obama has been a practicing Christian for at least 20 years and has even prayed to be an "instrument of God??? and asked people join him in creating ???a Kingdom right here on Earth."

I don't see the problem with Obama's religion or Palin's. Surely Obama does not endorse the "AmeriKKKa" comments made by a pastor in his recently former church. If we can give that latitude to Obama why can't we apply it to other people running for office?

As an active duty memebr of the USN and a former ship's doc, your argument is SICK. I don't care who you support, this kind of posting is just WRONG and deserves no place in our society. Your posting is hateful becuase it is nothing bu scare tactics that makes it incredibly difficult for any person who has loved ones in harm's way. Not all of us support the war. Not all of us support the Democrats. We ALL support our families and wish for nothing but their safety and all you are doing is reminding people how dangerous our loved ones' positions are.

  • Posted By: calebthomas @ 09/21/2008 10:23:56 AM

Christianity seems foolish to non-believers, like yourselves, but the inherent belief in God, upon which our country IS founded, proves that He is control, as we are the largest superpower in the world. How much more proof do you need? What's more is that no matter how much you all may hate that people feel led by the love of our God and Jesus, his son, it's what's gotten our country that title. Just remember, one day when you have nothing left, God still loves you, too.

    • Posted By: dark.energy363 @ 09/22/2008 4:29:09 PM

Ahem, I hope you are not insinuating that god is the reason for this country position as a world leader. Did you happen to forget some things in our past which were instrumental in our attaining the position as a world leader and they were very "UN" godlike? You do know that Native Americans were given blankets laden with smallpox to help facilitate their demise. There was also this little thing called ???slavery??? which helped with getting the country going...shall I continue? BTW, that slavery thing was condoned by the church, how very christian like. Now this country is by far better than most but it is NOT because it is ordained by a god. It is because of men doing whatever and to whomever it took to get us here.

  • Posted By: anne888 @ 09/22/2008 4:13:19 PM

huh? how does this draw sympathy for Palin? Do you mean sympathy for the fact that she lacks any relevant experience and is basically encouraging Americans to elect someone who pretty much knows nothing about current events or how to handle them in this day and age? Should we sympathize with someone who is putting an entire nation at risk and doing it with her eyes wide open?

Palin may be a great person and a woman worthy of admiration for whatever reason and kudos to her for her achievements but she is not someone who should be placed in any position of power over the lives of millions of Americans. No matter what anyone says, the FACT is that she simply does not have the relevant experience or knowledge to govern a country. Seriously, would you hand her nuclear codes and put her in charge of our armies and weapons? Really, would you? Because if any part of you is hesitating, then you should say no.

    • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 09/22/2008 4:21:54 PM

but you would trust Hussein??? An empty suit, community organizer...with experience in asbestos removal, voter fraud, and bribe taking. The ONLY stand he has ever made legislatively is...to continue the practice of allowing botched aborted "born alive" babies to die without medical help.

He is a total CROOK and a FRAUD.

      NOBAMA!!!

      • Posted By: p1nky @ 09/22/2008 4:28:51 PM

Where's McCain's big experience? Being a POW, running a campaign full of lies, marrying a rich chick, owning 7 houses and being senile is a qualification?
Why not have John Rambo as as republican nominee, he would be even more qualified by your standards...

    • Posted By: City Jim @ 09/22/2008 4:19:17 PM

So following your logic of relevant experiences, we should either hope McCain does not die in office, or that Obama does.

  • Posted By: kramden @ 09/22/2008 1:31:56 PM

You folks -- the mainstream media -- never cease to amaze me. The title of this piece, on Harris' website, is 'In defense of elitism' -- by appling 'When atheists attack' to it, you are assuring that a good portion of your readers will either (a) skip it entirely or (b) approach it with a closed mind. The issues Harris raises -- thoughtfully and intelligently, as anyone who reads the article attentively should find -- are vital ones, and bear length and in-depth discussion. Choosing Palin to be his running mate, McCain has thrown the dice in a blatant attempt to appease the religious right elements (who, before Palin hit the stage, wouldn't touch him with a ten-foot pole) and women (whose motives for picking a candidate are, he hopes, much more shallow than reality should prove to be the case). Her nomination should be seen as not only absurb, but as an insult to the American people. She represents even more of a continuation of the dumbed-down, vile tactics of the Bush administration, than John McCain. Her record of cronyism in Alaska should be reason enough for voters to reject her out-of-hand -- look what that heinous practice has done to our government efficiency under Bush if you don't think it's dangerous.

We can't afford what Bush has done to this country already -- we certainly can't afford to see his policies continued...and very likely in much more extreme ways.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 09/22/2008 4:28:16 PM

kramden (junkdrawer--yes, I speak German), you under estimate the American people, and do them a great dis-service by assuming they do not have the intelligence to know the difference between a plan and a plot. Your evaluation of the people, sounds as though you are implying that only conservative people are "dumb" because we like Sarah Palin, but that the ones who are liberal
are "smart". So, by that evaluation, if we were to switch over to the Obama camp, then we would all, suddenly, be one of the "smart" one. Hummm...somehow, that scenario just doesn't have any appeal for me, so think I will remain in the "dumb" camp and go with my opinion that McCain?Palin are the ones who can actually bring about the change we need, but thanks for your input.

  • Posted By: City Jim @ 09/22/2008 4:26:08 PM

So following the logic of this argument of experience relevancy, we should hope that McCain doesn't die in office or that Obama does.

Also, equating the example of those who are considered elite in their professions to those who consdier themselves intellectually elite is invalid. Intellectual elitism is not a profession, it is a narcissism.

This is just funny - in fact, it's completely hysterical!! This (sorry excuse for a) writer actually comes out and says that you can tell alot about someone by the company they keep!! It took my 5 minutes to stop laughing!! Why is that? Is it because the statement is false? No, it is true... 100% true - no doubt about it, BUT THAT IS EXACTLY WHY WE SHOUD NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA!! This guy writes an article to try to persuede people to vote against Sara Palin, and for Obama... and he makes the exact opposite argument. I am no fan of fundamental christianity, in any form. You won't see me going to Sara Palin's church, but with that being said, HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT GOES ON IN BARAK OBAMA'S CHURCH??!! So far, I have not seen anything about Sara Palin's church that she supposedly attended that even remotely compares with Obama's best friend and "mento" (according to his own words) Rev. Wright!! While I would choose not to set foot in Sara Palin's church, I would most likely be lynched if I set foot in Obama's!! This guy, Barak obama, has donated more money to Rev Wright so he can maintain his hate speech, than he has towards cancer research, AIDS research, and wounded veteran's combined!!! What does this tell you??!! Obama obviously hates people who aren't black christians! So if you are of any christian religion, but are white - he hates you (but he'll act nice in front of you because he wants your vote)! If you are Jewish, he hates you (but he'll act nice in front of you because he wants your vote)! If you are Hindu, he hates you (but he'll act nice in front of you because he wants your vote)! Get the pattern here??!! Let's also not forget Ayers, and the other known terrorists that he has spent so much time hob-knobing with!! Let's also not forget the former head of Lehman Brothers who actually advises him on economics... yeah, that's smart... way to go Obama - you finally found someone with a more dismal track record than yourself!!

Yes, you can certainly tell alot about someone from the company they keep, and that is exactly why if Obama becomes president... be afraid... be VERY afraid!!!

great article. You really hit the nail on the head. It was also unnerving to hear McCain's unreserved approval of her last night in a '60 Minutes' interview. I keep waiting for an explanation, a rational exposition or proof of her readiness to be VP and am disappointed again and again . Just saying something over and over doesn't make it so. People seem to suspend judgement and common sense in this election. If your 12 year old said he could drive so he should be allowed to drive the car, you obviously wouldn't let him. This is so much more important and yet people seem to drink in her confidence and translate it to mean competence. Thanks again for the great article.

Anniep, thanks for great post. Your reponse was well thought out and brings up great points that everyone else seems to be putting aside in their efforts to put out the most hate-filled posts possible. You bring up great points about the total fantasy of this choice by McCain and the total lack of any sense in choosing this person as his number 2.

And the same could be said of Barack Obama, yet Barack is running for president and must be ready on day one. Palin is running for v.p. and has the benefit of experiencing the choices of McCain. Not to mention, two years as Alaskan Governor makes her eminently more qualified than Obama with a few years as U.S. senator.

    • Posted By: careerdaytrader @ 09/22/2008 3:50:35 PM

not to mention after 143 days as a US Senator HE FELT HE WAS READY TO BE PRESIDENT!

So obviously he believes EXPERIENCE NOT NECESSARY. The most important job in the world requires no experience.

Next you'll see recent college graduates APPLYING TO BE CEO OF GE, MICROSOFT, EXXON. Hey if that dummy Obama can be President I can run your 50,000 person organization too! And give me my $50 golden parachute when I ruin the company at least I'll get paid on the way out!

America is going down the tubes - Voting Obama just QUICKENS the process by 20 years!

        Exactly my point. Stupid.

Funny, the Republicans put many of our companies on welfare, and then blame the Dems for trying to fix it. I hope you tell all the people who know you how you feel, so they have an example of what really stupid people think.

I'm in law school. I can't relate to her. I have a vagina and a brain. Let me guess... You didn't graduate high school, so you can relate to Sarah Palin and her family.

    • Posted By: yourwinter @ 09/22/2008 3:50:44 PM

Congratualtions. You just proved how dumb some people are. A year and a half of governor of one of the least populated states in the country would be more experience than McCain if only "executive experience" were to count. She did nothing while Governor, except get herself in trouble. Now, she has to lie about her tenure while both mayor and governor. At least Obama has a Harvard law degree. Don't consider her time as a part-time mayor (with an assistant for God only knows why) and a few months as Governor with little academic background as experience. It only makes you look stupid.

The Gibson attempted ambush of Palin only exposed Gibson's bias. There is no Bush Doctrine, or maybe there are four different ones. Gibson got the one he quoted wrong, and Palin had to correct him. Gibson's Obama interviews were all soft ball puff pieces. Palin's speach at the Repub Convention was inspite of a broken teleprompter. Listen to Obama even with a teleprompter and its all stutters and repeats. Obama cannot think on his feet, only parrots speeches written by his 300 man brain trust. As for education Bush has an MBA from Harvard, just as hard as the Law school. And Kerry had a lower grade average at Yale than Bush.
The school means nothing. Where are Obama Law review articles?

McCain graduated nearly at the bottom of his class. If war experience and capability are the measuring stick, we should dig up my grandfather and put him in office.

Obama graduated at the top of his class on his own dime and through his own gumption. Wouldn't you rather have an honest and hard worker going to bat for you when times are tough?

I guess you have never heard of anyone with a stuttering problem have you? You good American and know it all. Not everyone is as fluent as you are. Obama may have that speech problem but he still speaks with more clarity and a sense of reality that McCain. The Republicans have no idea of how real America lives.

Are you kidding me? Palin had to correct Gibson. It was obvious she had no idea what he was talking about. I'm sure most "average Americans" didn't, but she wants to be VP, and if she knew anything about it, she should have phrased her question as "Charlie, there are differect aspects of the Bush Doctrine, which are you referring to?" As for her teleprompter breaking during her speech, the McCain campaign itself has come out to say that did not happen. Obama has given many interviews and been vetted by the press over the past 19 months; Palin has done 2 interviews -- the one with Hannity shouldn't even count, because they probably gave her the questions first. At least, Obama has the guts to go into "enemy" territory and be interviewed by O'Reilly. She keeps giving the same speech over and over and won't take any questions for the public at those events. Why is that? What is the McCain campaign afraid of?
