This is a hit piece to be expected of a magazine aggressive in pushing countercultural "alternate" lifestyles.

Yes, that Sarah's a determined hetrosexual & married mother of five is what really irks the queers in the editoral room of "Newsweek." Worse, ehe's a committed Pro-Lifer.

Sarah as governor of the largest state in the Union and as one who founded & successfully operated a private business has far more executive experience than Squeaky Obama & the cowardly draft-dodger, Biden, put together.

The freaks at "Newsweek" may not appreciate it, but studies have shown that upwards of 85% of Americans self-identify as Christian, including myself, Catholic & a strong supporter of the McCain/Palin ticket. And former subscriber to "Newsweek.".

I am a Christian also, but I have always been taught not to be judgemental of others or forceful of what I believe. An individual has to find their own way in regards to their spiritual growth. It is not the government's place to force theological beliefs on thier citizens or base the countries doctrine solely on a theological belief.. The right wing complains that they don't want government n their lives yet they are ready
to burn you in hell if you don't believe as they do. My religion is private and a deep rooted part of my life. My outside actions are a direct reflection of what my parents have taught me and what has been instilled in me in church.

I didn't think any opposing responses would be more offensive that the article itself, but your response was. There are many straight people who have no "values" whatsoever, and they are judgemental hypocrites who call themselves Christian. Then there are many gay people who have stronger values, compassion, and faith than most of their counterparts . God created everyone equally.

isn't it just like the catholics or evangelists like you (of who I am a former member) to put up a fierce defense when their ideology is handed to them on a flimsy paper plate...go ahead and run from the truth, it is so much more confortable to hide behind faith and pray for the best...you cannot deny the founding fathers wanted a nation of the people, for the people and by the people...extremism has no place in politics, never has and never will...Palin will never be VP, her true colors are too frightening for liberty and freedom and all things this nation was founded for.

Oh, Question1, he knows exactly what he's talking about. I was raised in Assembly of God churches.

In Sarah Palin, we have a potential president who does not believe in thinking things through rationally if those things might possibly disagree with AoG doctrine.. In AoG churches, such thinking is known as "doubt" and doubting is a sin.

I don't know if any of the ordinary Christians in the US really know the extend of Palin's mania for end-times or how her strong fear of God's imminent wrath led her politics. This isn't Christianity, it's fanatism.

    • Posted By: Question1 @ 09/22/2008 4:19:05 PM

Apparently, you were raised differently that I was. I'm almost 60 years old and have gone to the AoG church since I was a baby, and the fanaticism about which you speak did not exist. Yes, the church teaches speaking in tongues, but aside from that doctrine the AoG is basically an Evangelical organization that believes the Bible is the Word of God, and therefore, honors life, believes in the redemptive power of God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once again, where did you hide out during SS and Church? Where you one of those who sneaked out during service and went to hang out at the local convenience store? The millions of members of this fine organization are proof that dedicated Christians of all faiths are the best citizens because they believe in giving to those less fortunate and obeying the laws of the land. I'm not talking about those people who claim to be Christians, but those who truly follow Christ and do their best to obey His teachings.

Shame on you, Sam Harris. How dare you insinuate that a religious person doesn't have the intellect to make rational decisions and would base decisions that affect humanity on their believed gift of prophecy. I thought all you liberals promoted acceptance of other cultures and religions. I guess that's only when they are not in a position of power.

      I'll give you the reason:GEORGE W. BUSH
IA criminal who sent us to war against people who did not attack us under false pretenses, killing 250,000 Irakies and sending that country into chaos!! That is a hell of a Christian. Palin is as unblinking, trigger happy, shoot first and ask questions later as Bush. MCCAin is a warmonger. His patform is BIG OIL which is good policy for Big Warmongering. People who believe in fairy tales are gullible enough to be sent into war and to buy into it. I can see you are very uninformed voter. Suggestions, go to the Energy Information Administration. Go to nationmaster.com. Go to CIA factbook. See what nations supply our oil. See the oil reserves of the "axis of evil". How many American companies are now hungry for more. See who got the no bids contracts to exploit oil in Irak. See our refinery problem. Inform yourself and you will see the truth about our real elitist and how they are dragging our country down.Vote for McCain and I guarantee you we will get involved again in another war.

I think what is becoming a growing concern in this country is not religion but fanatical religion. We have seen it obviously played out with fanatical Muslims- but fanatical Christianity is growing in this country as well- look at some religious zealots that are blowing up Planned Parenthoods. Read some of the posts on this site- there are clearly people that are voting based on their religious beliefs and are putting aside rational thought. Though this number is most likely still a minority, I believe people are just worried about the direction some people are taking religion in the United States.

    • Posted By: benkrapf @ 09/22/2008 2:48:32 PM

Definitely not when they plan on governing and waging war according to their believed gift of prophecy.

    • Posted By: 1paronomasia @ 09/22/2008 2:41:48 PM

Religious people do have the intellect to make rational decisions. The problem is that they choose to utilize faith instead of their rational mind. He did not insinuate that religious people cannot make rational decisions but rather that they choose not to because they value faith over fact/reality.

Harris defends elitism and expresses how incredulous he is that the American people just don't seem to fall all over themselves to put a liberal elistist in the White House.

Well, Mr. Harris, allow me to solve this great mystery for you.

I seem to recall a line about our government being "for the people, by the people" Simpleton that I am, I can't quite remember at the moment where I read that. *sarcasm*

People (rightfully) want a leader that can relate to them. When I vote for a representative to congress - that's what I expect them to do - REPRESENT ME! The elites represent themselves and their own egos - not me!

Liberal elites, who speak so disdainfully of people who are too stupid to agree with them, who so have such open contempt for people that do not share their world view, simply do not represent me or my interests.

Another problem with elites is that they have this very annoying tendency to think that they know so much more than they really do. They never recognize that even the most intellegent among us is ignorant of so much. We simply don't know what we don't know - a fact that is completely lost on so many of the elitist crowd.

Your rather obvious contempt for religion and people like me who are dumb enough to actually believe in such superstition is the perfect case in point why so many people like me can't stand people like you.

    • Posted By: dark.energy363 @ 09/22/2008 4:14:37 PM

I feel sure that at some point wingnuts will open a dictionary and look up the word "elite."

Or maybe not. Looks like the GOP is already poised to steal their election:

"September 19, 2008 · A new mailing from the Republican National Committee and the McCain campaign to Florida voters has Democrats saying they're the victim of dirty tricks. They say that at the very least, the mailing is meant to confuse voters in this battleground state. Republicans say Democrats are making much ado abut nothing."

WHAT YOU CAN'T STAND IS THAT SARAH PALIN IS A TRUE PATRIOT AND ONE WHO WILL GOVERN WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF COUNTRY FIRST. THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT GOVERNMENT TO TAKE CARE OF YOU HOUSING, YOUR MEDICAL NEEDS, YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR JOBS, YOUR RETIREMENT, ETC. YOU ARE WHINERS!!

    • Posted By: Jaybe @ 09/22/2008 4:13:32 PM

Poor little Dumplin. Here are some facts (mind you, I said facts-a foreign word to you) about your beloved Sarah:
      1. She built a $15million hockey arena for her crappy little town that resulted in a cost to the citizens
      2. Wasilla is the meth capital of Alaska (my, what great family values!)
      3. British Petroleum PAID for her inaugural ball when she became governor
      4. The stupid ebay jet story is a lie-it cost taxpayers $600,000
      5. She kept ALL of the $223million in pork
      6. She worked with Jack Abramoff's team to get $27 million in pork; Alaska ranks #1 in pork

If you want to vote her because of her crazy religious beliefs, then do so. But please stop saying she knows what she's doing and that she's not Bush with ladyparts.

What we can't stand is that the overall lack of Christian charity on the right is hypocritical, considering they claim all of Christian virtue as their political own.

Obama wants to build our country up again and make it possible for average people to generate business again.

This Nation was founded by the brightest deist, agnostics, hermetics, unitarians, libertarians and frethinkers, Samuel Adams,James Madison, John Adams, Jefferson, Thomas Paine ,just to mention a few- and not by the Puritan Protestants like many here seem to think. Their secular views allowed Americans the opportunity to freely exercise the religion of their choice or to be free from it. As a consequence Sam Harris can write this article today. His opinion of religion is irrelevant in this opportunity. His real contention is the incompetence of Palin to deal with the issues that the nation is facing which was very apparent during the interview with Gibson. George Bush - the guy we all could invite to a backyard BBQ- was not the brightest choice 8 years ago against Gore, or 4 years ago against Kerry, yet half of this Nation chose him on personality likeability instead of his ability to lead. Ability to lead requires thoughtfulness, having a good grasp of history, ability to connect the dots and to reach consensus among different ideas. Bush has shown us many times he has a cowboy way of making decisions -Iraq,tax cuts for the top 5%, deregulation, energy policies that do not take regard of the consumption side, etc. Cryonism was part of his style when placing people in high positions- Heck of a job Brownie(head of FEMA). Palin it has been discovered by many media outlets, governed Wasilla and Alaska in the same fashion, and just so happens to have far less educational qualifications than Obama or even Bush. Completing a journalism degree from 5 different Universities can offer enough proof as to her ability to read more than headlines. Hey, Bush once said he onl;y read papers headlines. Obama, in contrast was a Harvard Law proffesor, A scholar,. You have to have real intelligence to get that far in life. Looks and personality is not enough to be a Harvard proffesor. . But this Nation seems stupid enough to choose their leaders just for those superficial reasons. Then they wonder why are we in such troubling times.Maybe, is because Bush is not alone in the not being able to connect the dots circle of fellow americans. He is got plenty of company.

Well said. Fact is, there are entire volumes of writings and quotations that reveal the Founding Fathers to be just as you say, things that would curl the hair of most modern day Puritans if only they would bother to examine history. These were rational men of the Enlightenment, men who tried to understand nature on its own terms, not their's. The idea that here was founded a Christian nation is a gross lie and evil distortion of history. Do your homework, people.

Shame on McCain for choosing a VP candidate who "just got her passport this year". Do we really want an "Average American" running the show when the emerging world is looking to sideline the US on the world stage? By Average American, I invision a naive, over-confident, un-traveled, SUV driving, Bible thumping Jesus Freak, who handles snakes and shakes around on the floor speaking in tongues (are you kidding me? handling snakes? wha century is this?). This woman obviuosly has no idea of what is going on on the international stage (ie the imminent collapse of Pakistan). I was considering voting for McCain because I am from a Navy family, and he is an American hero, but people like Sarah Palin with their distorted view of reality are as dangerous to Western Civiliazation as Al Qaeda.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 09/22/2008 4:13:17 PM

Ben, if your idea of an average person were accurate, then I don't think anyone would want them for trash pick service, much less for President of the U.S.A., so thank goodness your concept of an "average" person is way off track (who on earth have you been associating with?!) Are you an average person, and if you are, do you handle snakes ir thump Bibles? Good Lord, deliver us from jerkos who have such warped ideas!! Somehopw, I feel fairly sure that if Sarah Palin makes it to the White House, she will not bring any snakes with her, however, a few may try to slip in, such as one and a half by the name of Obama and his less than "average" wife.

ALL Presidents are led by experts and advisors. Obama would be no different. Liberals thought of Reagan as a dim bulb too. I'd rather have someone who has actually managed something than an intellectual who believes that Iran needs to be understood, the same Iran who believes the Holocaust never existed.

  • Posted By: Robert L. Brockett @ 09/22/2008 4:11:06 PM

Food for thought: "On the Origin of Species" was published in 1859. Palin and her fundamentalist legions have had 149 years to study and assimilate this the cornerstone of all the natural sciences into their "worldview." Alas, her Pentecostalism prohibits even trying this on pain of eternal damnation. Superstition leads the way...

  • Posted By: prdinfdl @ 09/21/2008 1:28:18 AM

And after all of Sam Harris' elitist rhetoric about Sarah Palin not being experienced enough to be 2nd in command, he would have us believe that the alternative ticket with Obama at the helm is considerably more so. That is what I just can't get over with these kinds of nit-witted arguments.

Harris should be embarrassed and Newsweek needs to get a brighter bulb to write its opinion pieces.

The same argument to strike down Palin can be used to strike down Obama and then some. Obama has no one, unless Joe Biden is the new Dick Cheney

    • Posted By: careerdaytrader @ 09/22/2008 3:48:29 PM

Yeah Palin managed a budget of $11 BILLION. Obama being a US Senator managed a budget under $50 MILLION.

Another lie. Obama has way more support among the college educated (most of whom attended fewer than 5 colleges to obtain a 4 year degree). Face it. Palin's most relevant experience to the ticket is as a cheerleader and that's pretty much all she's doing now. Rah Rah Rah. Can you imagine the cheerleader going in the game for an injured Quarterback?

Since when is hurling petty, nasty insults and being dishonest to everyone including her own supporters respectful?

I understood the author to be saying that the problem is not that she is a Christian, but that she is a fundamentalist. Yes, she is specifically a Christian fundamentalist, but it is the fundamentalist thinking, which can be Christian, Muslim, or whatever, that is the problem.

Is it bigotry to be afraid of leaders who hold delusions as truth? Just because we label an idea as a religion does not mean it is above criticism.

jose's been doing this for weeks now, dude. Some of them are actually funny; most are sad. The biggest problem is, if most Republicans in middle America think this way, then how the hell will we ever fix our country?

The FBI is currently holding the son of a Democrat Tennessee congressman in regard to hacking Sarah Palin's e-mail. (Hacking e-mail is a felony, btw.) Why isn't the mainstream media covering that? If this had happened to Obama and the perpetrator had ties to a Republican congressman, the press would be screaming Watergate II. Hmmmm.... could this be yet another Obamagate that will be ignored by the mainstream media in their unending attempt to elect their candidate by withholding information from the American people?

You ask why the mainstream media isn't covering the FBI investigation of the politician's son who apparently hacked his way into Governor Palin's e-mail account. The answer is: the mainstream media IS covering this story. That's how I knew about it before I read your comment. And by the way, it's the son of a Democrat in the Tennessee state legislature, not the son of a member of Congress. And I read that on MSNBC, which last time I checked, is sort of mainstream media.

The left wing commies are...AFRAID...of Sarah. She is real. Reality scares the bejesus out of the lefties. The vast majority of the women who hate her...are full of guilt and condemnation. They...or...their daughters are guilty of murdering the most innocent of us all...the unborn. Instead of repenting and asking for forgiveness...they want others to follow their path...and murder more...It gives them an excuse. That is the goal of the liberal movement...It is a party of victims...It's not our fault...they did it...I had no choice.

The liberal mentality is a form of mental disorder. The author of this piece of garbage is proof of the fact. Sarah Palin scares you...because you know...you could have made the same choice...but chose not to...and you can't handle the guilt. Grow up...REPENT. Jesus saves...Liberalism KILLS.

    NOBAMA!!!

Mental disorders, lets talk about mental disorders. Who is it among us who claim to speak to and hear from omnipotent being on a regular basis? You know they have hospitals filled with such people. Ever heard of the word megalomania?

If anyone is afraid of Palin it's because she is almost as nutty as you are., Perhaps she too thinks the United States was created by God, in which case she is just as nutty.
But since you keep bringing up Liberals and clearly have not a clue wht the word means Here is the wikipedia brief description.
Liberalism is a broad array of related ideas and theories of government that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal.[1] Modern liberalism has its roots in the Age of Enlightenment. Liberalism rejected many foundational assumptions that dominated most earlier theories of government, such as the Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, state religion, and protectionism.

Now bigot its beddie bye time and you do need a good nights rest, Oh and by the way slander and defamation of character is against the law, I think the FBI is looking for you.

I'm a strong Obama/Biden fan and they definitely have my vote in November. That said, even I found this article offensive.

Yuseff. You are a reasonable and respectable person. I salute you for that. This article truly is very offensive and degrading to woman. This short-sighted and one-sided views of Sarah Palin should not be tolerated. She never claimed to know everything in politics. Who does. The media succeeded in knocking out Hillary Clinton. Now they are doing the same tactics against Gov. Palin. Shame on you Mr. Harris!!!

Mr. Harris writes in his book "End of Faith" - 'A belief is a lever that, once pulled, moves almost everything else in a person's life. Are you a scientist? A liberal? A racist? These are merely species of belief in action. Your belief's define your vision of the world; they dictate your behavior; they determine your emotional responses to other human beings."

I have read his analysis of Sarah Palin. Now, where is his analysis of Barack Obama? What are the beliefs that lever Obama's actions, or for that matter, Mr. Harris' actions in addressing what drives Gov. Palin, while remaining silent on Obama. Sen. Obama belonged for over 20 years to a church that preached black liberation theology and all that it means. He sought out Marxist advisors, friends and organizations his entire adult life. Why? What are his beliefs and how will they drive his behavior?

Gov Palin may be undesirable to Mr. Harris, but she is just Obama in lipstick. Both have limited public records and limited experience. Personally, I trust Gov. Palin who lies her cards on the table more than Sen. Obama who seems determined to hide his close to his chest. At least I know what the risks are in her case.

Cannot believe that Mr. Harris, who writes on and on about the importance of reason and rationality in driving our decisions and the behaviors that result would choose one who relies on ignorance to pave his way to the White House. Shame on you.

What beliefs do you have that have driven that decision -- the ends justifies the means?
