At last, a perfect article that sums up exactly how many of us feel. Thank you for having the courage to publish this (and, I hope you arent' deluged with hate mail from right wing freaks.)

RightThinker- Way to make baseless assumptions - did you ever stop to think that maybe someone is an atheist because no one can logically prove there IS a God? A belief in God is based on faith, not on fact, otherwise you do not truly believe. You should know that as believer in God.

While I personally believe in God, I can understand why someone does not, I struggled with the question of faith for a long time, because no one could prove it to me. I came to my own conclusions. An no book will prove it to a person either, it is a personal journey. The book by Strobel is an attempt to make money off of Christians. Look more into his history.

As far as Palin goes, Harris has only talked about hard FACTS with her. The things she has said and done. I believe in God and this woman still scares me. Her belief in God does not match anything I was taught or believe in the Bible. She is judgmental, when you are not supposed to judge and she is critical of anyone outside her family, but forgiving of her families indiscretions.

As far as McCain is concerned, he has lied far more than Obama in this campaign which does not match what I have been taught by my faith in God. In my view, Obama's behavior is closer to what I have been taught about faith than McCain or Palin.

Picking a president is more than about what you believe in abortion or what God you worship. God will hold me accountable if I pick the wrong person to lead my country. I believe God is already holding us accountable for picking Bush for a second term- look at our financial markets and the fact that people's homes are being taken away if you truly believe God tells us what he wants. Bush continues to kill more of God's children in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now America is suffering the consequences in all aspects of their lives.

God is telling us what he wants with this financial crisis caused by the Republicans who pretend to believe in Him. And for that reason, my faith tells me to stay away from Republican pretnenders.

Obama is worse with his complete lack of experience.

      1. His economic advisors are actually part of the financial crisis as they participated in the scandals that brought us to this point. They took home millions leveraging these loopholes.

      2. Obama took the second largest handout from Fannie Mae, knowing the economic crisis was upon us, so he says.

Attached are two (2) links that substantiate the information below. One you will note is the NY Times, which is about as left wing liberal as one can get.
      http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=75586

      http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/19/business/19fannie.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Unlike Obama, McCain identified the Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac (FM/FM) issues a number of years ago. In 2005, McCain cosponsored legislation, The Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005.

I certainly Do Not want Obama anywhere near the US economy!

Here are some notes from the article. Please, before you rant and rave. Go to the links and do your homework first:
The bill passed the House but was never brought up for a vote in the Senate, largely because of Democratic opposition to change in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regulatory structure that remained in place until the Treasury takeover two weeks ago.

Instead, Democrats in Congress have sought to preserve the quasi-governmental status of the mortgage giants, seeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as places to locate former top Democratic Party operatives, where they have earned millions in compensation, despite a continuing series of financial scandals. Enron-like accounting manipulation, for example, boosted earnings to a level at which massive executive bonuses could be paid.

All three Obama-related executives earned millions in compensation from Fannie Mae.

Johnson earned $21 million in just his last year serving as Fannie Mae CEO from 1991 to 1998; Raines earned $90 million in his five years as Fannie Mae CEO, from 1999 to 2004; and Gorelick earned an estimated $26 million serving as vice chair of Fannie Mae from 1998 to 2003, according to author David Frum, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

All three have been involved in mortgage-related financial scandals.

In 1998, according to the Washington Post, Gorelick, as Fannie Mae vice chairman, received a bonus of $779,625, despite a scandal in which employees falsified signatures on accounting transactions to manipulate books to meet 1998 earning targets. The moves, in turn, triggered multi-million-dollar bonuses for top executives.

Gorelick was embroiled in another controversy over an alleged conflict of interest when a 1995 memo she authored as deputy attorney general surfaced while she was a member of the 9/11 commission.

The regulators said an accounting fraud at Fannie Mae included manipulations to reach earnings targets so that Mr. Raines, Mr. Howard, Ms. Spencer and other company executives could pocket hundreds of millions in bonuses from 1998 t

Lynn, this is the sort of half-baked one-sided economic conspiracy theorizing that frustrates me as much as the terrifying trends that Sam Harris identifies. If you think Obama is implicated in the current financial crisis, then check out how deeply McCain has been involved in creating the regulatory (non)environment that led to this mess (start by reading up on the Keating Five, and look into McCain's voting record on banking regulation).

        • Posted By: LynnPA @ 09/21/2008 3:31:16 PM

You obviously did not read the post. I stated that Obama would be worse and not experienced enough. His choice of economic advisors demonstrates that fact. The blame for the financial crisis falls to his advisors while in previous roles at Fannie Mae.

One of the articles is from the NY Times, which is as liberal as one can get, so I suggest that you actually read the articles, take note of the names mentioned and cross-reference those names to Obama's economic team and financial supporters.

Furthermore, do your congressional research, you will see that the legislation in question passed the house and therefore is valid. You will also find the names of the Dems who voted against it. Takes a little time and work, but better to be informed than influenced!

          do your homework!

          • Posted By: HinderedHindsight @ 09/21/2008 4:38:49 PM

Lynn, you should take your own advice about being informed. McCain's comments in 2006 were nothing more than a parroting of a report that came out at the time. He stated in 2007 that he didn't see the crisis as it exists coming:

            http://wire.factcheck.org/2008/09/19/mccains-cloudy-crystal-ball/

And now, he wants to take credit for it! Looks like McCain's "experience" doesn't amount to much, does it?

As far as Obama's experience, McCain apparently does not feel that experience is important when it comes to the Executive Branch. It is evident in his choice of Palin. Your support of McCain while critiquing Obama on his experience is an interesting brand of hypocrisy that I do not understand.

Don't get me wrong, I think experience is important, but I think honesty and consistency is more important. For McCain to choose Palin after so harshly critiquing Obama is just foolish and shows that he does not hold much stock in his own experience and history as he claims. And since he does not hold stock in his own experience to win the election, I cannot in good conscience support him either as his experience is essentially rendered meaningless.

            • Posted By: LynnPA @ 09/21/2008 10:47:48 PM

Does not change all the poor judgements made by Obama, and there are many.
Not to mention the misrepresentation of actual facts that can be verified, that is kinda dumb.
And he is running for President, not a good choice.

              • Posted By: HinderedHindsight @ 09/22/2008 4:03:27 PM

And all of Obama's poor judgment does not change McCain's poor judgment. The logic goes both ways. If you read factcheck.org and politifact.com, they dissect claims/ads made by BOTH candidates in order to discern the truth behind those claims. At the moment, McCain's poor judgment and poor character has greatly outweighed Obama's. McCain has misrepresented facts on many more occasions than Obama, especially trying to justify Palin as his running mate.

All the verification (they actually cite their claims, and provide multiple resources for each claim they dissect and prove/disprove) exist at these sites. Right now, a far greater number of McCain's claims have been shown as false than Obama's. Even worse, McCain has had a tendency to repeat his dishonesty on multiple occasions.

"You can learn something about a person by the company she keeps. In the churches where Palin has worshiped for decades, parishioners enjoy "baptism in the Holy Spirit," "miraculous healings" and "the gift of tongues."" -- What a hypocritical statement here. We can judge Palin by her church but not Obama? What about the fact he went to a church which preached Anit-Americanism for over 20 years? No, no, no says the liberal media, this is just

In the time of George Washington and Lincoln, physicians believed that blood letting and putting leaches on people was healing them. In fact many healings are attributed to such foolishness.

Lets discuss all the other things people believed in 200 years ago as well. I think Hitler prayed too. What good did that do us?
Whether someone prays or not is not of my concern. What they do with the supposed sacred answer from on high....IS my business.

if they are to be president or vice president of the country in which I live my day to day life...I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED.

Harris is not simply attacking her faith. He is bringing light to her incompetence for the job of world leader of the leading, most influential nation in the modern world.

May he continue to attack and bring reasoning to light.

The problem is, his attacks are divisive, not objective, and they will not reach his target audience

      • Posted By: 1paronomasia @ 09/22/2008 3:22:21 PM

Just because his assertions are divisive does not mean that they are not objective. The litmus test of objectiveness is not whether or not they are divisive. And I think this response page is evidence enough that it is reaching his target audience.

        • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/22/2008 4:01:48 PM

It is both divisive AND not objective. If he thinks he is persuading voters not to vote for Palin, he is not. He is drawing undeserved sympathy towards her

Thank goodness. Finally I feel like people are starting to take notice of the ridiculousness of this situation. Not only had I feared the american public had been sitting idly by, tuned out, happy to just push a button on election day, voting not on political issues, but on personality (and perhaps sex appeal), but I was equally appalled that no one seemed to take this conversation to the next level: she is a real threat to the public by her "every day" attitude. I have never been able to comprehend people wanting a politician who isn't above average. People liked George Bush because he seemed like a good ole boy, but it's always made me nervous to see people in a place of power that aren't more intelligent than I am.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 09/22/2008 4:01:35 PM

gehlen, Intelligence and smart don't neccesarily go together. Keep in mind that Adolph Hitler was intelligent, but he was not smart. Still want someone in office who only has intelligence, but absolutely ni common sense? I sure don't.

    • Posted By: Georgia-Dan @ 09/22/2008 2:05:24 PM

I would say that it is much more than her everyday attitude. Ms. Palin is a Christian fundamentalist. Mr. Harris is trying to make that clear to everyone. She holds views which, if put into motion by means of real political power, would get a lot of people killed. This is what is so frightening by are current predicament.

What is it about our country that two people can see the same facts and come up with two entirely different opinions. How does the fact that obama has written two books and gone to Harvard Law give him FAR more expierience. Last time I looked John McCain was running aginst Obamma. I do not have a collage degree but I have a sucessful business. Does this make me less inteligent that my degreed compition? Why must the liberal state of mind opperate on emotion rather than fact. I'm not talking about the facts that are put out by one side or the other, but real sources like the congressional record. It will soon be known WIDELY that Christopher Dodd and Barny Frank are personally responsible for encouraging the lowering of mortage standards and the lack of oversight. Yess ets help all the poor people. The ones who drop out of school, the ones who don't want to apply themselves and the ones who should never have gotten a home loan in the first place. Let's continue these policies and indeed expand them by electing Obama and watch as our economy circles the drain.

You must be having a memory lapse problem. The Republicans had full control of Congress during half of Clinton's administration and add another 6 years to that under Bush. Bush has been in the White House for almost 8. How is it possible that a candidate dare to blame Obama for the Deregulation phylosophies that gave us the corruption that have caused the biggest financial scandals of this century. First it was Enron, Worldcom and the accounting fraud schemes caused by flexible accounting rules and now the Mortgage giants and Wall Street deregulation . You have to be really an ostrich not to see that this is the republican phylosophy of let the market take care of itself without any government oversight. These deregulation was very publicly endorsed by McCain since his economic counselor Phil Gramm was the writer of such blant assault to the American people. .McCain is a big lier and a flip flopper, big time. As for elitism, it is about time we get a President of brilliant intelligence , thoughtfulness and mild temperament like Obama. McCain has a short fuse, everybody in his party knows it, and Sir we are not electing Sarah for president although must Republicans seem to have gotten caught in the lie that she will be the one running the show when MCCain gets to the White House. She is a prop for his candidacy and he is fooling every conservative into thinking that he is just like her. What a big hoax that is!!

dmorris@cebridge.net - In regards to your comment on leadership, have you been watching Obama's campaign? It has been the most innovative campaign we've seen in modern history from the way he has raised money to the way he played the delegate game with Hillary during the primaries. He hasn't lied during the process when everything out of McCain's and Palin's mouth has been a distortion of the truth or a flat out lie. If they are already lying to you now, can you imagine the lies if they get in office?
McCain is literally changing his positions from day to day even hour to hour in some cases, he has no idea where Spain is located or that Iraq and Afghanistan do not share a border and he doesn't know what a Sunni is versus a Shia. And worse of all he wants to do the same thing with healthcare that he endorsed for the financial markets (deregulation) and look how well that turned out.

If you can't vote for Obama, then write in Ron Paul, for the love of God, do not vote for McCain/Palin, they are a disaster waiting to happen.

They supply his advisors and have him as the product of a grand marketing campain designed by the best marketing people they can get. One thing they can't give him is substance or expeirience so they give him platitudes. He is their golden boy and their only chance at the present. He also is as far left as they think they can sell to the American public through thinly veiled retoric. Do you wand a scocialist state. That is what George Soros and the democrats want. Look closely at what their promising. Should sucessful people be penalized for being successful or should poeple work hard to be successful. If you take away the incentive to become sucessful your society will end up like the USSR's , bankrupt, moraly and financially.

hate...I'm telling the truth...the truth offers freedom. Christ is a liberator. Guilt condemns and kills. I take it you are Hispanic. Do you not believe that the killing of the unborn is wrong...and a terrible burden to bear?

        NOBAMA!!!

Oh, hispanics arent allowed to receive "god's love" is that why you assume someone who is obviously sane and who knows his own "Truth" is hispanic?? Stop spreading hate, spread belief in humanity to free itself, not the belief that the lord will release us. Because evenif he is real (nope) he doesn't care about his "children"

No...ya'll always assume...always take the victim point of view. Fact is fact...the vast majority of Hispanics are devout believers...they despise the killing of children. And let your heart not be burdened...even if you don't believe in Him...He believes in you. You still have a chance.

Obviously Mr. Harris speaks on topics for which he has no personal experience or knowledge. There are a number of items that given the space could be debunked here regarding this article. However, to call Mrs. Palin's religious affiliation a "nuts-so" religion because the believers speak in "tongues" is to truly display a lack of knowlege on the topic of the "Holy Spirit" and what her particular religious association believes. I, too, am a firm believer in this "tongue-talking" faith, but to try to explain that kind of faith-enriching experience in this column would only be tossing my pearls to the swines! There are many fringe religions of this world, but the denomination that Mrs. Palin is associated with is not one of those weird, snake-handling, religions. Get your facts straight before you begin bashing someone's faith. Why not do a piece on Islamism and the strange beliefs those extremists have - kill myself and take as many infidels with me so that I can have my 70 virgins! Now, that's a religion to fear, not one in which the believers give money to feed the poor, help the homeless, provide children's homes for children that have been abused and abandoned, treat drug addicts. Check out the Convoy of Hope - it's one the greatest benevolent causes that assists hurricane and other victims of disasters. Teen Challenge has the highest "cure" rate of any drug rehabilitation ministry in the U.S. The U.S. Government was so impressed by their stats, that Teen Challenge was asked to minister to the Viet Nam Vets who returned home with drug addictions. There are many other community services that I could point to that these "wierd tongue talkers" provide. Instead of criticizing someone's faith how 'bout checking on the service that this organization provides. None of us are perfect, but your harsh rhetoric is a display of ignorance and probably a bit of jealousy! I hope you discover your own mortality and what lies ahead for you after this life before it's too late!

very entertaining. You said, "Why not do a piece on Islamism and the strange beliefs..."

He wrote a book about it you dolt. And how is hard rhetoric a display of ignorance?

"When atheists attack"? Newsweek's staff should be embarrassed by this ridiculous title. Mr Harris writes a sober and thoughtful op-ed piece and you sensationalize it with a title like that? Many religious believers have similar qualms about Governor Palin -- Sam Harris's atheism is peripheral to his concerns about her limited political experience and narrow world-view. Stop making his every pronouncement a manifesto of atheism.
