mdd1976---you need to get your facts straight before posting on here.....you people kill me with this crap about "Obama doesn't wear his flag pin or doesn't put his hand on his heart" He DOES wear a pin and changes it frequently.....
Please explain to me how McCain is a better and safer choice for this country then Obama. PLEEAASE tell me.
First of all, I never said McCain was better. I would prefer another option to the two that we are stuck with. And as far as Obama not wearing the American flag pin, you need to get your facts straight. In his own words, he says he will not wear that pin.

HILLARY
She sucks too.
IIIII
This is hilarious! Here you have a guy talking about why Sarah Palin *wont* do well in all the problems that she will inherit from whom? Elitists! The greatest leaders of our time were not people of intellectual elitism but rather those of extraordinary common sense that could rally people around a cause. They were men that "didnt blink" or mince words. Get over it Mr. Harris and go read your history books! In our country, I think of men like Reagan, JFK, FDR, Theo Roosevelt, etc.
Prayer and church attendance do not demonstrate godliness just as the wearing of a flag lapel pin does not demonstrate patriotism.
Actions speak louder than words. Charity and peace must be cultivated once again or America will lose the dream that drove our great-grandparents to emigrate to Ellis Island.
How can we talk about charitability and democracy to foreign leaders when our own administration does not practice those things itself?
This article should be about Obama. He is the one with no experience. Lack of experience is no big deal for Democrats and Liberals when it comes to their nominee. HELLO...Running one State (Governor of Alaska) is a smaller version of running 50 States. Obama does not have any experience in managing anything, except not being able to push any voting button in the Senate except "PRESENT." America needs a President that is more than PRESENT. Sam Harris of Newsweek, you're obviously a liberal. Try using this same scrutiny of reporting with Obama and you will surely put Obama out of the picture.
So you're telling us that Palin has more experience that Mr. Obama! Oh, I'm sorry, you must be from The Land of OZ. Oh, wait, you must be looking out the same window towards Russia as she is. Click your heels 3-times and repeat after me......"Obama for President"
Speaking in Michigan today, Senator Obama promised to do for America what Mayor Coleman Young did for Detroit.
Shouldn't we be comparing Palin to Biden not Obama? Joe Biden is a fraud, check out his last run for president. Biden runs off at the mouth whenever he is backing into a corner, is this what you want running our country if Obama can not serve his full term? John McCain has by far more experience than Barack Obama in very difficult situations. Barack Obama has made his living on the backs of the taxpayers with nothing to show for it. Teddy Kennedy the hit and run murder is one of his mentors, how did the Kennedy's make their money? Booze illegal Booze. Troopergate is nothing compared to some of Biden and Obama's buddies. Let's check them all out, line them up and give the American people a real look. If Palin is going to be judged solely by the company she keeps then lets do it for all of them.
I agree.
Be careful what you wish for...
26 years in Washington and a disgusting divorce means McCain has a lot more dirt on him that's squarely in the public record.
Biden's been around a long tim, too. At least he can hold his head up high and say he's not a sell-out. He has less money than practically any Senator.
SIMPLE--WHEN YOU KNEEL BEFORE GOD AND YOU WILL CONFESS THAT JESUS IS LORD OF ALL--AND WHEN JESUS TELLS YOU HE DOES NOT KNOW YOU AND GIVES YOU TO YOUR LEADER LUCIFER AND YOU DECEND INTO HELL SCREAMING AND YOUR TEETH ARE NACHING--REMEMBER ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE WRITTEN TO DESTROY YOURSELF--GOD WILL FORGIVE YOU IF YOU ARE MAN ENOUGH?? TO ASK FOR FORGIVNESS--IF YOU CAN SPEAK THE TRUTH TO HIM AND NOT BE YOUR SELF RICHIOUS SELF---YOU MAY HAVE A CHANCE---WITH RESPECT EAGLE BEAR N.A. WYANDOTTE
wyandotte: Is there something in your holy book that prevents the use of punctuation and maybe a spell checker? Is there a commandment that I might have missed that compels you to speak in ALLCAPS? I'm wondering because so many fundamentalist rants that I see are written in the same style.
I don't think God agrees with you. But thanks for the advice.
Actually, Wyandotte comes at it from an Old Testament perspective. If you want McPalin in office, get used to political governance according to fundamentalist Christian values. At that point, what would make us better than the 'terrorists' we fight?
WHY on earth is this article headlined "When atheists attack"? This point of view has nothing to do with atheism--I am a mainstream god-fearing Jew married to a mainstream god-fearing Catholic, and we agree with every word of Harris' article. What is Newsweek trying to accomplish by this sensationalism?
I completely agree. Pure, unadulterated sensationalism. This amounts to an attack on the author, who should only be praised for his outspoken bravery, saying the things too many of us either will not or cannot. Shame on Newsweek.
This may be the writer's original title: http://www.samharris.org/site/full_text/in-defense-of-elitism/
The editors have no balls. They need to borrow some from Hillary.
you seem to gorget that George Washington consulted God on a daily and "Extremist" way, Abraham Lincoln prayed every day. i believe that you should take a look at past presidents and not only point to george bush. we have traditionally had leaders who were devout in their faith. i would say that most still did a good job. you would be rather naive mr. harris to beleive that because she is devout in her faith that she can not do a good job, and this is why you and your liberal buddies in journalism will lose this election for obama, you insult the majority of americans by putting religion down in such a way.
But she's crazy. He tried to sugarcoat it so you would not be so offended. But she's out of touch, far away and ignorant. Add to that she goes to a nut-so church and her husband hates the country, and you have a bad situation. She was not vetted and can't be left to her own devices. People applaud when she does not screw up.
It does not matter if we were a "christian nation" or not. We have people of all religious beliefs as well as no beliefs here in this country that all deserve respect. Therefore, it is wrong for a politician like Palin to want to impose her beliefs onto everyone else. Her wanting abortion illigal is like a Muslin taking office and forcing everyone to wear burqas. You can't make everyone follow your religious views! If you want to be pro-life and not have an abortion that's your choice, but you should not take that choice away from others.
Also, all experience aside...who do you think is better equiped to turn this country around? Obama wants to make this country a better place. McCain wants to please his party. The same party that got us into this mess. I used to like McCain before he gave in to his party.
I don't know how anyone can even call Obama and elitist (meaning: snob). He worked for everything he has. He was an average boy who worked hard, got educated and provides for his family. McCain married a rich woman and never had to work for anything. McCain is more of a snob than Obama ever will be.
Prior to this election cycle, McCain had more Hollywood connections (and probably still does) than Obama. McCain, prior to this election cycle, touted himself as a media darling, and that extended to Hollywood.
Remember... Obama is the monkey wrench. The conservatives never saw him coming. How could Obama be this entrenched Hollywood celebrity elitist snob? He hasn't been around Washington for 26 years.
McCain has had plenty of time to show his true colors, and he has. Now it's time for a change.
You actually sound reasonable. I agree except with the part about all beliefs deserve respect. I used to love McCain. It saddens me to see what he has become.
What are the issues of most women? Again, major generalities. Get specific what about Palin and women's issues do you not agree with and why? Also, she never denied science. Her father was a science teacher and she beleives that evolution should be taught. However, she believes in creation. How do you know she is short sided, you can not even answer the question if she supports other forms of energy?
Let's see:
1.even putting the word "God" with the words "Iraq" and "War" are not good and only leads to more wars, killing of innocent people (both of which she supports).
2. overturning Roe vs. Wade to set back all that women have worked for, i.e. control of their own bodies.
Woman do have control of their bodies. They make the decision to have sex don't they? They also have the ability to utilzie birth control if they do not intend to get pregnant? Also, the Supreme Court decides on law such as Roe V. Wade....not Sara Palin.
I don't know what day and age you are living in, but nowadays more than 60% of women are in some way sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Sexual assault is not something women have control of, nor do they control pregnancies that may be the result.
making fun of community organizers who were the very ones who began the movement to ALLOW WOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE!!!
If one believes in GOD like almost 80% of Americans, we have faith in GOD and call on GOD to see us through even the worst of situations like a war.
Speaking like she does with calling it a "holy" war will only prolong the agony, torture, and killing of innocent children and people. All magical thinking aside, i think we can all agree WAR AND KILLING IS WRONG.
In response to coalpines, it's clear our economy is already circling the drain due to the current administration. Conservatives bend to industry clamoring to be left alone so they can keep their greedy little paws on more and more money, yet obviously they can't be trusted to do so; now it has blown up in their faces. I'm not for handouts, and I'm not for bailing out businesses at taxpayer expense either. Also, I wouldn't say a college degree means someone is more intelligent, but going to Harvard, TEACHING CONSTITUTIONAL LAW for ten years, having a Pulitzer Prize winning author as an advisor (who takes on worldwide humanitarian issues,) etc. will make you more KNOWLEDGEABLE about many politically and globally important issues. Could Palin have even gotten through law school?
I do not want to live in a theocracy, period. And I agree with Mr. Harris completely in his assessment that if the Obamas had a pregnant teen daughter, the Republicans would have immediately and unequivocally turned it into a "family-values" "black irresponsibility" issue. The hypocrisy makes my blood boil.
I read that women are turning to Sarah Palin. How can women give away the freedoms they and those before us have fought for just because Sarah Palin happens to be a woman? Or, are they too young to appreciate the freedoms they have and take them for granted? If she were a male politician, would they find her beliefs truly frightening, which they are. Should we again send females to the abortion butchers? You cannot legislate morality; women will continue to seek abortions, as they have for centuries, whether they are deemed illegal or not.
How are fanatical Christians any less scary than fanatical Islamics? It seems to me Sarah Palin would bomb anyone without blinking an eye because she felt God would want it that way. In recent years candidates have had to talk about their religious beliefs. Until now I have believed that religion should be a private thing, not trotted out for all to comment on. Now, when I see the blind, unthinking religious beliefs of Palin, I???m glad it has been brought forth; however, I???m afraid people really don???t see it for what it is. The founding fathers felt that separation of church and state was important, and it still should be. Wasn???t this country founded on the premise that people of all religions could worship freely, or believe in none at all?
Also totally frightening to me is that she believes seeing Russia from parts of Alaska qualifies her handle foreign affairs or meet with the heads of state from countries with differing religions and beliefs. Being Miss Congeniality is not preparation nor is being a hockey mom. I have traveled extensively, been a soccer mom, ski mom, baseball mom, have even gone hunting, and have a grandson with Downs; but none of these things remotely make me qualified to be Vice-President of the this country.
First things first, if you're going to sit there and pretend that you have never felt any kind of a higher power whether you call it God, Allah, Gaia, or Mother Nature then nobody needs to listen to you because you're obviously a liar. Secondly , who are you to tell people what they should beleive in? Thirdly, your obviously a hard-core democrat who doesnt even has the insight or the spiritual enlightment to even seek out the truth about the issues. I'm not a republican by the way and personally I don't like either choice we have. Obama is no better, he's been a community organizer before...... But what else has he done? He's helped pass two laws, one of which lets sex education be taught to kids as early as kindergarten. He has no executive experience at all. His running mate Biden has no executive experience at all. Are you so blinded with hate because they beleive in God that you can't even see this? It's proposterus for you to even write this article... Also I do have one question for you, During sex who does an atheist cry out to? Oh God! I cant beleive he said that, oh wait I dont beleive in God...
If you spend 3 years as a community organizer growing your organizati on from a staff of 1 to 13 and your budget from $70,000 to $400,000, then become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new African American voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, then spend nearly 8 more years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, becoming chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, then spend nearly 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of nearly 13 million people, sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you are woefully inexperienced.
If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, then you've got the most executive experience of anyone on either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska military and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is the closest state to Russia.
As one of 59 State Senators, Obama would have represented roughly 220,000 people in illinois, not 750,000.
As one of 59 State Senators Obama represented about 220,000 people, not 750,000.
Ok, so he has managed a budget of $400,000, What is the U.S. budget?
He created a voter registration drive to improve his chance at the presidency, good political move... Obama voted "present" over 130 times... He couldnt even make up his mind with a "yes" or a "no" Is that the kind of indecisiveness that you want in our nation's leader? If you actually care about your vote and other people's votes, then vote for a 3rd party candidate, this years duopoly's choices are crap. We need to show the duopoly that we're not going to stand for this anymore... If enough people vote for a 3rd party candidate and we can accrue a large enough percentage of the vote away from the big parties then maybe we can actually have a candidate next time who's worth voting for... And maybe it'll make those parties realize that more people are actually paying attention to the issues as opposed to just voting for the party for the sake of just voting for that party or because of race which unfortunantly has been a big part of this election, both ways....
Benjamin, as Jeff shows, your facts are not just a little wrong, they are completely false. Here is a URL for a comparison of McCain and Obama's recent legislation: http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_wings/2008/09/compare-and-con.html (or go research it yourself). Obama created major laws on, for instance, ethics, loose nukes, veterans??? care, and government transparency. Oh, and the ???kindergarten sex ed??? bill was actually to increase the budget of a program that taught little kids to avoid and report molesters. If you think that???s a bad idea, I pity your children. Obama???s record is the opposite of Palin???s: she loves her own state and knows nothing about the rest of the world; he has focused on global issues for decades. His experience and interests are relevant to the job. Hers are not.
Also, speaking as a religious person, please stop calling millions of people including many of my relatives liars. Yes, really truly, some good people don???t believe in G-d. If you can???t accept that, it???s your problem, not theirs.
Great article, terrible heading. What does "When Atheists Attack" have to do with the article? Why did Newsweek decide to alter the author's original title, "In Defense of Elitism"?
What do Sam Harris' religious views, or lack thereof, have anything to do with what he said in this piece?
This is dreadful editorialising an otherwise excellent, well thought-out piece of writing.
Nothing.
Newsweek, like other mags and newspapers, do this to increase readership.
What unmitigated rubbish. I am quite sure I could drool on my pillow a more coherent column on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The attempt to compare the skills required for political office with that of a pilot or a brain surgeon is something I wouldn't expect from a high school sophmore composition.

So, you would be perfectly happy with your surgeon or pilot graduating at the bottom of their class? But the leader of the United States of America can be a low I.Q. C or D student? Guess your right, intelligence in this job doesn't matter at all. I'm sure our founding fathers would agree with you.
Why not? We're talking about the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Are you saying that sound and reasoned judgment is not important for our political leaders? I think Mr. Harris is absolutely correct. We would never knowingly choose an incompetent boob to fly our plane or operate on our brain. However, we seem perfectly fine giving incompetent boobs (no pun on Sarah), the keys to the White House.
The article wasn't talking about sound and reasoned judgement, it was talking about the belief that only those "elitists" who attended certain schools or agreed with their view of the world should be allowed to "rule" in positions of power. Good judgement, reasoning and the ability to learn are not just taught/encouraged at some universities but should be the hallmark of any educational institution.
This article and some of the comments show the hipocracy that is rampant in liberalism today and it's why that polical/social movement is so out of touch with reality and with the vast majority of Americans. The potential of America is that anyone can be a success and reach heights that other countries/cultures can only have in dreams. Mr. Harris would have us to believe that try as they can, the common folk need to keep their grubby little fingers off the power buttons in this country and leave the real decision making to those really smart people like himself.
Mr. Harris is no fan of Christian fundamentalism. It is true that he would not consider someone with literalistic (as opposed to politically inspired i.e Georgie Bush) religious zeal qualified to hold the reigns of high political power. He has drawn a line in the sand to say that the earth is not 5000 years old, dinosaurs were not on the ark (in fact there was no ark), science is not the enemy, and stupidity is not a virtue.
What vitriol from the scared leftist elitists!!! I guess that since we can tell a lot about a person from the company he keeps, Obama is a radical muslim who would spew racist hatred from apulpit if given the chance...oh, right we aren't supposed to judge him by the company he keeps right? Although, he did divorce himself from some of those same personalities when his advisors told him that his associates weren't playing properly to the coveted demographic of middle Americans that make up the country. Good luck, but the race is pretty much run and won. Congrats to McCain/Palin.
McCain doesn't stand up to scrutiny when you look at the company he keeps. Are you sure you want to go down that rhetorical road?
I saw a poll once that showed that 13% of Americans think Obama is a Muslim (incorrect he is a christian) and that 1% think that he is a Jew (that is just funny).
See. Dripping, lying, judgemental Fundamentalist. Just awful.
