I agree a thousand-fold. Problem is, you're preaching to the choir. The portion of the American populace voting for her believes the same nonsense with the same vigor that she does. Faith requires an absence of reason by definition; how likely do you suppose it is that these people would be persuaded by a rational argument?

We have to keep trying though.

It's funny how diversity and respect for people's beliefs seems to stop when it comes to Christianity. The left is very happy with the Obama/Biden ticket. They know Obama was merely using Reverand Wright for political gain not as a spiritual advisor. Although Biden claims to be a devout Catholic, he is 180 on key tenets. His tax returns shows either he is a no show at Sunday mass or just stiffing the church when the collection plate is passed.

This is not an argument about religion.
This is an argument about who is going to be at the helm of our country, in these next ultra critical years.
This could be the most tumultous time in Amercian history since 1776.

Palin is unfit to deal with things economic on such a world wide scale.Palin is unfit to be president or vice president. She got her first passport last year! She hasnt been out of this country before that. This matters.

This is not malicious, this is just fact. As factual as in stating my realization that I am unfit to be the quarterback for new England Patriots or the corporate head of Apple or Sony. there are more qualified people for that job than myself.
I have no training, experience or right to the position. I would submerge the company or team with my lack of knowledge.
(I'm trained primarily as a musician and have studied my craft for a lifetime. I expect no less from musians that I work with. how much more should we scrutinize a world leader!!!)
She has not studied her craft for a lifetime.
This is not make believe opinion stuff. This is not religious falme war material.
This is serious. This is your lives and your familys lives at stake.

    Wake up sleepers.

get your nose out of that 200 year old book and lok around with eyes that can see 2008.
    Wake UP sleepers.

Maybe this anti-elitism goes back to the reality that we grow up praising democracy and living in a republic. We watch as the power promised to us in every patriotic gesture glorifying ???democracy??? is usurped by an elite few. Embracing the elite embraces the reality that a true democracy would never work on our grand scale and that few of us have the time, resources, or information required to effectively govern or effectively lead. People won???t own up to their personal ignorance, their failure to access what few means we, as citizens, have to understand the political world. And it isn???t entirely our fault. Governance requires strategy and secrecy, which means that we are not privy to the information our senators have when they make their decisions. On top of this, the easiest ways to get political information are the ones most subject to fraud. Assuming we???d like to access the most important information, this trickles down to us on television and the internet in news stories. ???Stories??? suggesting that there is a latent argument to them: ???this happened and here???s how and why.??? Ultimately, it means someone else controls what is ???important??? and how it is distributed. Ultimately, this makes many Americans (including myself) distrustful or cynical about the information we receive. But guilt (or pride?) over our democratic ignorance should not allow us to accept representatives simply because they are ign???ant like us. And it should not allow us to accept the abuse of power. If we must further democratize anything in this country, it ought to be information, not politicians. Our demand should be SHOW US THE SOURCE!

What you described was exactly why conservatives are concerned about Obama as President not Palin as Vice President. Lack of experience, knowledge and company he has kept. Sorry Palin is not a lawyer and/or graduate of Harvard. You liberal leftist elitists just don't get that we here in "fly-over" country are not dumbasses. We too, are well-read and educated. Get over yourself!!

Brilliant!! The part about Palin as a neurologist really got me. And for all of those saying, "give her a chance," I'd rather not. Her politics are either fanatical or non-existant. I'll take my chances on the knowledge, experience and promises of real change proposed by Obama/Biden. I know a lot of fundamentalists want to protect their own,so there's nothing that can be said to that, but please take a moment to think about what is best for our NATION before you throw your vote away; save religious matters for church.

Just ponder for one moment that Sarah Palin's spiritual views are correct. What if there is a God who is control of everything? Then ponder for another moment, that she is completely wrong, please tell me who would be, or how would this country be worse off? No matter what policies or laws are put into effect due to the change in government, by either nominee, radical Islamics will still HATE us and all that America stands for. (Freedom, self expression, you know, 1st amendment kind of stuff). Why doesn't anyone report that? Liberal America seems to think that if we "play nice" in the World's sandbox, everything will be just peachy! It is so easy to criticize, belittle, poke fun of, dismiss, a person's views, politician or not, when it does not conform to the liberal media. I find it odd that the media did not have such a strong reaction to Barak Obama's preachers' sermon of hate. It was almost completely dismissed by the media. A headline, for what, maybe one day? Sarah Palin states that she is a Christian. I believe Barak Obama admits he is a Christian according to the church he belonged to for 20 years. Oh, I'm sorry, that's right, he compromised his integrity and character by selling out to "popular opinion" by withdrawing his membership in his church. I'm sure he survived the Christian brainwashing that took place in his church for the past 20 years . Watch out for a change in the wind. Who knows where the media will take us.

What, exactly, does Sam Harris' religion or lack thereof have to do with this article? Why has Newsweek retitled his essay from "In Defense of Elitism" to "When Atheists Attack"?! Harris' stated intent is to defend the notion that we should seek and indeed demand excellence from our elected officials. He posits that there are minimum qualifications for a president or vice president and that Ms. Palin does not meet them.

The change of title is unnecessary and misleading. It tells me nothing about the contents of the essay and rather encourages many to dismiss it out of hand as an "attack". Mr. Harris' religious beliefs are not relevant; it is in fact disgusting that Newsweek sees fit to call him out as an atheist in a manner that seems to somehow disavow his contribution. It would be utterly unacceptable to run a piece titled "When Jews Attack", yet what Newsweek has done here is tantamount to just that.

Obama looking for people who will populate a new world. Writes Mr. Obama on page 86 of his autobiography: "If Malcom X's discovery toward the end of his life that some WHITES might live beside him as brothers in ISLAM seemed to offer some hope of eventual reconciliation, that hope appeared in a distant future, in a far off land. In the meantime, I looked to see where people would come from who were willing to work toward this future and populate this new WORLD."

I am a committed Christian who finds the Palin doctrine horrifying and not representative of the gospel as I know it. I lived in Colorado Springs, which considered itself ground zero in the Chrisian culture wars. I experienced first hand the divisive, destructive impact of "spiritual warfare" and dominion theology on a community. Sarah Palin is Ted Haggard in a skirt. God help us all.

If you are really worried about Palin, you should twice as much worry if Obama is elected as he has ZERO foreign policy expereince and him you want to be a president in the 21st Century when you HAVE to think global?! Come on! It's not the VP who makes policy, didn't they teach you that in elementary school? I suppose your insipid hatred of the Republicans has beclouded your brains to see the trees from the forest.

    • Posted By: 1paronomasia @ 09/22/2008 2:33:48 PM

0 zero foreign policy experience? You know he sits on the senate foreign relations committee right? I think it would be more accurate to say he does not have extensive foreign policy experience.

Its not the VP who makes policy? Have you heard about Dick Cheney? What scares me is that she is one heartbeat away from the presidency.

Okay, so Mr. Harris has had his fun in mocking those with strong Christian values. Do you people not know your history, the basis of what this country was founded on? Apparently not! I am thankful that when our founding fathers were laying the groundwork for this nation there were people trashing them because of their Christian beliefs. Then you want to talk about electing unqualified people. This goes both ways. I have seen a female Democrat elected to an office because she sponsored bean dinners and gave away green balloons. She was elected to an office she didn't know beans about (although, I guess she could cook them). Oh, excuse me that was okay -she was a Democrat.

There are plenty of liberal Christians (you know, of the "turn the other cheek," "love your enemies," "love your neighbor as yourself, and don't forget that Samaritans and Mexicans are included as 'neighbors'," that sort of Christian) who claim that Palin and other fundamentalist Christians do not represent real Christian values, and indeed are often anti-Christian in their values. These Christians also recognize that this nation was founded on Enlightenment values, not on specifically Christian values.

I am waiting, less patiently each day, for someone to state another serious drawback of a Vice President or, dear God help us, President Palin. So I'll be that "someone."

By embracing a ridiculous concept of "family values," Palin has ignored basic female biology. The incidence of Down's Syndrome births is highest among women over the age of 35. In fact after 35 the risk increases exponentially each year.

How can we trust someone to make vital and far-reacing decisions when she is so personally irresponsible as to allow herself to become pregnant at a time in her life when she is risking not only her own health, but the health and future of another human being? How can we trust someone who is so callous as to ignore the impact of a serious handicap on another life?

As a result of her breathtaking irresponsibilty, she has sentenced her infant son to a life of struggle - at best. Further, is she going to continue her reckless avoidance of birth control until menopause? Might we expect Vice President Palin to become pregnant again during her term in office?

As a woman with children of my own, I am adamant about women being allowed to follow whatever professional path they find fulfilling. "A happy Mom is a good Mom." But Palin's apparent disregard for her children's happiness - she sent Track to Michigan after he was found vandalizing property, and sent Bristol away to a relative's house (what is this, 1950?) when she found out Bristol was pregnant; essentially abandoning her children for disappointing her. Oh, and let us not forget the shot-gun wedding she is orchestrating between her seventeen year-old daughter and a foul-mouthed mysogynist? (Don't believe me, read his Myspace; unless it's already been deleted.)

Palin's image seems to be more important to her than her own children. If she can emotionally abandon them when they fall short of her expectations, how can we expect her to serve strangers responsibly? I am not interested in electing a judgmental, narrow-minded, cold-hearted individual to the second-highest job in free world. And let us not forget - a President McCain who so hastily chose for his running mate a ridiculously-inexperienced person whose primary qualification seems to be that she possesses two X chromosomes. I don't want someone with his finger on "the button" who makes such rash decisions.

    Do you?

It is these types of personal attacks on Palin that add to her appeal. The Obama campaign has shown very little humility, and many of his supporters are feeding off of his arrogance. Implying that Sarah Palin should not have had the choice to give birth to her son Trig is appauling.
Let's get to the root of the problem. Many democrats are LIVID at Obama for being too arrogant to put Hillary on the ticket, and they are taking out their anger on Palin. If Obama doesn't have the judgement to put the country;s needs ahead of his own, what hope is there? Who cares if he likes Hillary or not? If he couldn't put her on the ticket and learn to work with her, how will he do in diplomatic negotiations with world leaders he doesnt' like?

      • Posted By: Annie6499 @ 09/22/2008 2:31:30 PM

Regarding Palin's "choice" to give birth to her son: I said nothing at all about that. What I said was - maybe you should read more slowly so you can understand all the big words - that it is irresponsible for a middle-aged woman to assiduously avoid birth control in the name of "family values." What I stated in my first paragraph is medical fact. Look it up.

Typical right-wing behavior, by the way: take a part of a statement, assign it a meaning it never had, then present it as fact. When dealing with my children and my students, we call that L-Y-I-N-G!

      • Posted By: Annie6499 @ 09/22/2008 2:05:54 PM

She had a choice. A choice she wants to take away from every other American girl and woman; even those who have been raped or forced into incest!!

It's also ironic that Bush and others talk about the "angry left".........really? The left is angry? Last time I checked, it was the Republicans preaching hate for anyone who doesn't share their "family values", hate towards homosexuals, hate towards anyone hailing from the Southern Hemisphere.
