When Atheists Attack

I understand Mr. Harris's views and respect the fact that he can hold them, but to lump all Christians into a collective idiot camp is contrived and disingenuous. Many of the greatest national and world leaders that have been able to successfully lead this nation among others have been Christian. Not to speak of the majority of founding fathers and historic presidents.
Even a brief assessment of Mr. Harris???s diatribe on the abilities of Christians to hold public office shows his disdain for all people of faith. This is a fundamental dichotomy which distracts from the realities of history and precedence. A casual observer of western civilization history would be hard pressed to assert the propositions that Mr. Harris has regarding the inability of people of faith to lead.
Recent history alone has shown that the same prejudice held by Mr. Harris is unwarranted and ultimately harmful to the dialog on policy and national interests. John F Kennedy was disdained by many, even Christians, as unfit to lead due to his Catholic faith. Ronald Reagan, a former actor and then governor, was chastised for his ties to the ???religious right??? but affected an unprecedented wave of democracy and freedom among the majority of the rest of the world including the former Soviet Union and communist Europe.
The hypocrisy of Mr. Harris???s argument is suppositional in that his obvious leaning toward the democrat ticket of Obama and Biden still leaves his arguments out in the cold. What faith do these nominees purport to hold to and follow? Whether Christian, Muslim, or the abject faith of modern humanism and Atheism ??? all form and shape worldviews which should be studied and understood by all voters and free thinkers as we approach this election.

When we virtually 'require' our candidates to 'affirm' their faith in SOME god, it is refreashing to see someone say that such an affirmation should count as a negative. John McCain was asked a question about whether he could supoort a Morman or a Muslim or a Jew as president (or some such question, the part I remember is his answer which went something like) I could support most anyone, except and atheist, I have to draw the line there. Well, he drew the line just short of my vote!

Perhaps the scariest, most sincerely honest account of Sarah Palin yet. McCain's biggest blunder to date...terrifying to think of the ones potentially to come!

  • Posted By: jmboomer11 @ 09/22/2008 1:18:27 PM

Obama has no more experience in world affairs, economics etc., than Palin. Where is all your slapping down about him?

  • Posted By: another mother @ 09/22/2008 12:41:53 PM

Absolutely chilling...unfortunately, I'm convinced, a correct assessment. Many years ago I, too, was a "soccer mom"--it didn't qualify me to run for VP any more than it does Palin. Just being a mom, a female--or a dad, a male, for that matter!--says nothing about one's qualifications for high office. We cannot afford to vote in a person who cannot correctly pronounce the word, "nuclear"--not eight years ago, not four years ago, and not now...I didn't think anything could be as bad as Bush, but there is apparently no lower threshold to what the American public will not only tolerate, but actually vote for! Just call me a 62 year old grandma, with a PhD, still waiting for a truthful, educated candidate to vote for--be they black, white, young, old, male or female...the closest I've come to trusting one in many years is called Obama, though I don't know how anyone can get us out of the mess eight years of Bush has gotten us into.

    • Posted By: Geministorm @ 09/22/2008 1:14:39 PM

We're you a Governor? A mayor? Palin may not be ready to be VP, but don't disregard her by saying all she brings to the table is being a mother. Otherwise, it will be said that all Obama brings to the table is fatherhood...

Is your litmus test for presidency being able to pronounce "nuclear", really?

Hopefully you're a little more thoughtful than that.

  • Posted By: MNDeb @ 09/22/2008 1:14:25 PM

If Palin is as ready to be VP (and possibly President) as McCain says she is, why are they keeping her away from the press and not allowing her to speak at rallies by herself?? I can only think of one reason:

She does not have the knowledge and/or experience to speak without a script. McCain feels her responses would hurt him politically.

Am I the only one who finds this really scary?? Palin isn't bright enough to represent McCain on the campaign trail, not smart enough or experienced enough to answer reporters questions or take questions from citizens, BUT IN THREE MONTHS, SHE COULD POSSIBLY BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES????

Because if she were smart enough, McCain would want to show the world that he didn't make a mistake when he picked her. He would want the world to know how experienced she is on domestic and world issues. But he is afraid.

And we should be afraid, too!

Let's not forget the real reason Palin is even on the ticket at all: MCCAIN NEEDS THE FEMALE VOTERS TO GET HIM INTO THE PRESIDENCY. This is the best they could do on short notice. How stupid do they really think we are?

  • Posted By: soren172 @ 09/22/2008 12:19:32 PM

"You can learn something about a person by the company she keeps." I agree...so what does that tell us about Obama and his association with Reverend Wright and Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick? At least Sarah Palin doesn't turn her back on her friends and religious peers when they become politically inconvenient.

    • Posted By: bradsbabe @ 09/22/2008 1:10:41 PM

No, she simply fires people that do not agree with her, have wronged her or her family in some way, and plays fast and loose with the rules all out of political vindictiveness.

I think that it is perhaps Shanejgaa that has fallen over the edge. It sounds like to me, Shanejgaa, that you have drunk the kool-aid and believe any and every Republican talking point. You truly frighten me.

Thanks Ronnie, but I do wonder if Motorcycle whatever is one of the less fortunate uneducated that Obama says our tax dollars are going to help. i do feel bad that this person can not express themselves without being rude, maybe a community organizer could offer a program to them.

The REALLY scary thing is that not only do we, as an electorate, seem to gravitate towards mediocre leaders, we let our media get away with doing a pitiful job of fact-checking. If someone besides Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow would report the multiple and unashamed lies Sarah Palin (and John McCain, for that matter) continues to pass off as the truth, maybe she wouldn't be so close to winning the election. Thanks to Mr. Harris and Newsweek.

    • Posted By: HockeyMom18 @ 09/22/2008 12:40:46 PM

How about reporating on Obama's lies? We would like a report from the Doctor on Obama's ability to hear at his young age. This guy sat in the Rev. Wright's church for 20 years and never heard a word the guy said. If you want to know the downside of McCain/Palin watch Oberman if you want the downside of Obama watch Bill O'Rielly. McCain/Palin lie but Obama only misspeaks?

How about the economy? Its the economy stupid, not rev wright or McCain's affiliation with his reverand.

I'm not doubting that Palin is perhaps a wonderful mother or as a governor that serves Alaska's needs capably. What I don't like is that she is getting an easy ride to power. If she is a decent and prudent person, she should let the public test her instead of profiting from McCain's "Leave No Candidate Behind" program.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Duncan Hunter, John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Tom Tancredo, Tommy Thompson. These people DECIDED to run for president, and they've fought hard and face much more challenges that Palin. Why should she get a free ride?

Mary Bono Mack, Lisa Murkowski, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Katherine Harris, Judy Biggert, Deborah Pryce. These Republican women have shown more expertise on issue like security, economy, and foreign policy than Palin. McCain could've picked anyone of them, but instead decided Palin is the best? Best at what? A popularity contest? A desperate pandering maneuver? Why should Palin get a free ride?

Everything about McCain and Palin is wrong, from exploiting American values and fears to gain power, to lack of ethics accountability in their campaigning, to lack of knowledge and empathy for real world issues, to lack of transparency in their operations and communications.

So Senator Obama hasn't exactly stepped away from his Chicago style of politics and strong arming after all it seems. Hope the fact that Trinity endorses Obama and receives tax exemptions. NAACP actually had Obama's speech that was taped at their convention 2 days earlier playing on the TV's the entire time during McCain's visit and speech at their convention. Pretty disrespectful for people who condemned Bush for not wasting his time showing up for the same abuse previously. Seems like an endorsement to me, and Obama doesn't seem to have a problem with reaping the rewards of their efforts to have him elected. Where the problem
arrives is that Obama and other Democrats have now just threatened to revoke 3 different Jewish organizations tax exemptions if they do not uninvite Sarah Palin to their conventions. What were the Republicans thinking anyway? That they could play by the same rules as the Dims? LMAO I'll have a Lg. Kool Aide with a side of hypocricy please........

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/22/2008 12:36:04 PM

He hates Jews too? Wow Mr. Mo-nay, you sure are on top of things. How do you find the time with all that fighting and teaching your kids to beat up anyone who disagrees with them tough guy?

      • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 09/22/2008 12:49:02 PM

I said Ill have a Lg Kool aide with a side of hypocrisy. Not I'll have a baby raping child molester who never speaks on the issues. Go figure

        • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/22/2008 12:56:02 PM

Bravo Mr. Mo-nay. You still have that old fire burning in you. I hope people understand and agree with you in your infinite wisdom. How's the street thuggery going today? Ms. Palin to the rescue. She has her finger on the pulse of America.

  • Posted By: mebejoe @ 09/22/2008 12:53:02 PM

The McCain/Palin ticket readily accepts the endorsement of the Republican administration (a.k.a. the worst presidency in US history) while also claiming a platform of "Change."

Anyone care to explain that contradiction?

  • Posted By: hneftafl @ 09/22/2008 12:49:25 PM

I want someone in public office who is different from me in being competent to deal with things of the community of which I am a part, whether local, national, or global, so that I do not have to with much less extensive resources.

Palin is a hick. So was Abraham Lincoln, but he was an educated hick, albeit a self-educated hick, of manifest emotional depth, acquainted with grief and and with the manifest and many ambiguities of guiding a nation in anguish, and self-effacing to the extent of surreptition in whatever religiousity.

Palin is amazing. Her competence is exceeded only by her intelligence, and her intelligence only by her confidence.

With regard to her faith, even after watching her for some weeks under public (even if well stage-managed and leashed) scrutiny, I still have little sense of whether genuineness (which well may be), disingenousness, or a lion???s skin on a small donkey or perhaps more aptly elephant or moose; or of her biblical, ecclesial, or theological knowledge of her faith beyond the local dialects and accents of her local church in Wasilla over the past 30 or so years and a smattering of other places of worship ??? and none at all of the Jesus, risen or crucified, of that faith.

On a clear day she can see Siberia, whether there are any houses there, and those as may be visible Potemkin villages.

I will concede that should Palin rise to the US Presidency it well may be the working of the will of the Holy One of Israel, but also well not as we may think, and not for commendation but for judgment.

Those of you rushing to Sarah Palin's defense are missing the point. We need to elect people who focus on rational, scientific, and informed decision-making processes. People who are inclined to consult experts and actually listen to their opinions. People who look at history and weigh actual data. People who understand the complex relationships between countries, cultures, and politics. People who are smart enough not to allow corrupt business men to pull the wool over their eyes. There is no reason to believe that Sarah Palin is ANY of these things. Perhaps she is a wonderful person and a great Mom. So is MY mother, but my mother would not get my vote for president, nor would she be silly enough to believe she is qualified! Stories of Palin's evangelical beliefs and her total inability to answer basic questions are SCARY. If you are not scared then you simply are not thinking clearly about the requirements of the job and the power that the role commands. Either that, or you yourself are blinded by the absurdity of religious fundamentalism. If the latter is the case, slap yourself a few times and try to wake up! You are putting your faith in mythology. Jesus is not coming to save you.

Comment: Sarah Palin is not an evangelical Christian - but a Pentecostal - so get it right - BUT if you have some old testament concept of God, if you think God thinks like you (WHEW!!!) - then ANY ONE IN THAT POSITION IS NOT QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY NOR ANY OTHER NATION!

      • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/22/2008 12:43:44 PM

Yeah. Palin is for real. She's one of us. She's a real person. She hunts and sends her kids off to live with relatives when they screw up. She lives next to Russia, and she knows the stress of running for beauty queen. She is good for Washington because she doesn't know a thing. I wish the media would report all this. She now has to live with the stress of her husband not wanting anything to do with the continental US, and that's tough. She a strong woman and would be an ideal president should Mr. McCain fall ill.
