The danger of Palin's real involvement is exacerbated by McCain's early dementia. His "slipups" on countries, their leaders, the involvement of NATO's member countries in Afghanistan, his confrontational recommendations in Georgia because "we are all Georgians," his mistakes when discussing Alkeida as Sunni or Shiite, his inability to understand the religious involvement of Iran, and so on and so on, show not only a complete inability to run the foreign policy of the United States if he ever becomes its President, but an inability to make any decisions based on understanding, knowledge and a small iota of memory. McCain is ill and his illness makes him unassailable in his sick, slipping mind. He is angry, confused, sick, and showing that his forgetfulness is chronic. As a pair McCain and Palin are extremely dangerous to this country - we cannot rely on either of them as individuals, but together they become a catastrophe waiting to happen.

This person has taken the most inane view of an interview that was intended to be a got you to portray Governor Palin as unaware. In the language of some inarticulate reporters who themselves don't understand their business there are questions that are not answerable on their face. Without some specific meaning I can ask what do you think of the moon. That is not a question. All this demonstrates is the ignorance of the reporter. There are very brilliant people who have different values who can learn quickly I admire for character, say Lincoln. rreporte

Go me for planning an early retirement abroad. I have no use for Palin and her anti-intellectualism supporters as I do for the new rich who have destroyed every avenue of good taste and tradition our society once treasured. The worlds of art, academia, and literature, are now dictated by tasteless boors who have the same lack of respect for tradition and cultivation than the Palins of our country.

Thanks to republican strategies, this country is doomed. There's no going back now.

    Palin???s End of Days

Sam???s original title for this piece was ???In Defense of Elitism??? according to the email he sent to subscribers to his web site. The title chosen by Newsweek editor Jon Meacham distracts the public from the serious issues Sam raises. Specifically, one question we the media to answer is whether Palin expects Jesus Christ to return in her lifetime, as reported in Salon -
    http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/09/15/bess/print.html

This particular question matters because putting Palin in line to be Commander in Chief is insane if she believes these are the End Times.

Mainstream Christians need to realize what the Christian Right is doing -

"Governor Palin, are you ready at this moment to perform surgery on this child's brain?"
"Of course, Charlie. I have several boys of my own, and I'm an avid hunter."

Not only insightful, but a funny *** as well. One protest to this whole line of debate I keep coming across is how she supposedly will not let her religion bleed into her politics. Her record on that issue is a bit sparse, but that church speech pretty much seals the deal for me.

Excellent article. Unfortunately, the people who need most to consider this point of view have closed minds.

What happens when you let those who must follow God's plan get to run your country and make sure that YOU follow his interpretation of "God's plan"!

BAGHDAD ??? First his two sons were murdered. Now he faces prosecution. The reason for Mithal al-Alusi's troubles? Visiting Israel and advocating peace with the Jewish state ??? something Iraq's leaders refuse to consider.

The Iraqi is at the center of a political storm after his fellow lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to strip him of his immunity and allow his prosecution for visiting Israel ??? a crime punishable by death under a 1950s-era law. Such a fate is unlikely for al-Alusi, though he may lose his party's sole seat in parliament.

No but a woman who cut taxes , got a 40 billion dollar pipeline done that couldn't get done in 30 years, SOLD THE GOVERNMENT JET, Took on her own party (which where obamba on that or crossing the aisle you know he is all about "working together" yet he never crossed the aisle) also has a 85% approval rating and can kill a mose ...NOW THATS SOMETHING WORTH VOTING FOR

    • Posted By: tyler214 @ 09/22/2008 12:03:12 AM

There is NO $40 billion pipeline "done" in Alaska. Palin help pass a law that gives a license to a Canadian company to build such a pipeline if they can get the additional financial backing that is needed, beyond what the state of Alaska will provide. I know, she talks like the pipeline is already built and working, but it ain't so.

Anyone in AK who DID NOT take on the Republican party was never going to win in office after all of the corruption that had just happened. It was a political necessity at the time - she had to do it. Had she not, she would not have won and she would have been railroaded out of office immediately. Research the political climate in AK please, before you go giving such credit to Palin. The whole Republican party across the Nation is now eating their own because they HAVE to in order to survive since everyone is so completely over the party and the mess that it is.

Once again I find myself in complete agreement with Mr. Harris. John McCain's choice of the grossly unqualified Sara Palin is stunning in it's calculation and horrifying in its prospect. It's high time for America to grow up and require more than a beer-worthy president or one that's "just like me". We should demand that a president be "elite" and be mature enough to acknowledge that "elite" is not the same thing as "elitist". Sara Palin doesn't even come close.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz yawn like the keith olberman talking points but the treasury by lowering taxes has taken in more money in the last 4 years than IT EVER HAS!!! As for me the Bush taxcuts have given me an exrtra $2000 dollars a year. And since I don't play the class envy game and since the top 5 percent alrady pay 35% of all the taxes. While providing jobs in this country. Don't lecture me about who pays and who don't. If Barak and Charlie rengal are such great guys ....do they have tax accountants to find every loophole to pay as little tax as possible???? or do they sign the 1040 when it comes? because if they do the first they are hipocrites. They are always "giving" something with other peoples money with the threat of going to jail. While Joe Biden has given nof his own personal fortune a pawltry $3000 in the last 10 years. Obamba made million and gave only $35, 000 of which $22,0000 was to his racist church. SO SHHHHHHH BE QUIET AND DO A LITTLE MORE RESEARCH!!

Sarah Palin is where she is today is not because her husband was the president. Can you say the same thing about Hillary. It's takes a Republican women to teach the leftist feminists what real feminism is all about. If her husband helps her out with her family needs so what. Kids are his as well. She didn;t have the kids by herself. Sarah is a real women who loves her family, kids and her husband, unlike the men bashing feminists.

    • Posted By: lisaooo @ 09/21/2008 11:33:09 PM

Sarah Palin is where she is today because stupid people like you think she deserves to be in office simply because she loves her family and is a real woman.

      • Posted By: Zacy @ 09/21/2008 11:45:58 PM

But the feminists disagree with you.

"Palin???s candidacy brings both figurative and literal feminist change. The simple act of thinking outside the liberal box, which has insisted for generations that only liberals and Democrats can be trusted on issues of import to women, is the political equivalent of a nuclear explosion."

        A feminist???s argument for McCain???s VP

Thank God she is not the wife of the women chaser. So who is stupid now?

My grandfather had an 8th grade education, and he was a WWII vet. He was well-read, even though he was the son of immigrants. It's not Palin's lack of formal education that concerns me, but her world view. The problem with the "elites are bad" argument, is that there is some truth to it. Harvard, Yale, Princeton. That doesn't mean a politician who graduates from the Ivy League will represent the interests of the American people. I'm supporting Obama, and I hope he wins. I hope he restores the faith of the American people in the office of the presidency.

  • Posted By: Jane_Dewey @ 09/21/2008 11:40:24 PM

The reason the American people don't trust "elites" to run the country well is mostly because they haven't done a very good job of it, have they? Yale, Harvard, Princeton. That doesn't mean they're qualified to represent the American people over the interests of corporations and their own greed. I support Obama. I hope that he wins, and he restores faith in the office of the presidency. My grandfather had an 8th grade education and was a WWII vet, and he was very well-read and intelligent. I don't see those qualities in Sarah Palin, so it isn't just her lack of formal education that worries me, but her world views.

  • Posted By: Reader08 @ 09/21/2008 11:40:24 PM

I loved your article. When you replaced being Vice-President with performing brain surgery, I think your point about the importance of education was excellently made. We need educated, open-minded, thoughtful people making the most important decisions in our country. You can still be tough and smart without basing your policies on the rules of a 4th grade staring contest.

  • Posted By: dr doug @ 09/21/2008 11:38:43 PM

Well, we must all remember who selected this broad in the first place and why. I read from someone that Mc Cain's choice of Palin was literally a case of "personal treason". Think about it: if Mc Cain should die in office - this is what he chose to leave the country with.

  • Posted By: ronnie8365 @ 09/21/2008 11:34:10 PM

So lisa I take it you have a picture of Che Guevara on the wall . Do you have a beret and the T-shirt becuase if you vote for Obamba that is what you are voting for. Say goodbye to differing opinions...oh that is what the left believes in. Fairness doctrine you can't compete in the arena of ideas so you will force your vile down the throats of Americans. Maybe Michelle will finally be proud of her country when Barak is elected. Barak sat in his church for 22 years and was never in town when Jerimiah wright was spewing his racist venom (which they will miraculiously be friends again when he is elected) He sat on boards with Bill Airs who said on 9/11 he didn't do enough when he blew up buildings. Michelle says don't strive for excellenc like I did stay in the community and work be a social worker or a nurse don't dare try to be a C.E.O. or climb the corporate ladder like I did making over $300,000 a year. Remember what Barak says "white folks greed runs a world in need" But yeah Lisa keep on thinking I'm a racist......
