President Obama spoke today from the Rose Garden and delivered a very pointed message. "I will immediately fire anybody who engages in any kind of profiling at any level of my administration. No ifs ands or buts." Mr. Obama was joined by his Homeland Security Secretary Joseph Conrad.

it's obvious that the Repblican Method of "Trickle Down" is not working for our economy... i find it amazing how many wealthy Repblicans blog on newsweek & believe in the " trickle down " method... Hummm !! if jobs & growth really trickled down then our economy would be in better shape..

Great article, very interesting and insightful. I think maybe there is a lot more to be said and that Obama should do better to break from concentrating on responding to every little sling and arrow of McCain's for a time - he should do what he does best and convey a vision for a new direction in specific terms, and state more or less what he will plan to do once in office.

I'm tired of the tit-for-tatting going on in between any major national or international event, such as this latest financial crisis... It demeans both candidates and bores the rest of us - or maybe it's exciting to be entertained in such a fatuous way, a bit like watching a football game or an argument between two opposing teams... but that should not be the main thing that everyone remembers in the end.

I'd like to see more of Obama's leadership side - his policy wonks flanking his podia (plural for podium?) and a sense of specific actions he would take during the first months in the White House. He'd do better to think of the future when he's actually in office and stop taking swipes back at the Rovian punches his dopey opponent is being told is necessary to win. McCain himself seems uncomfortable with all this - he too should be authentic. Everyone sees through anything less.

Well, just my two cents - inspired by Jonathan Darman's piece. Nothing terribly original or non-common-sense. Hope for CHANGE, PROGRESS we can believe in.

President Obama sent Secretary of State Bill Richardson today to Tehran to negotiate the release of Vice President Biden who has been held in captivity since his visit there 8 months ago. Mr. Biden is said to be in good spirits and is a source of endless entertainment for his captors.

boots07, perhaps you could justify the statement that this is all Clinton's fault. Look at unemployment, it was a staggering 7.5% in 1992 with the end of Bush's presidency, and Clinton lowered it EVERY SINGLE YEAR he was in office, cutting it almost in half (4%) by 2000. The Bush Jr gets elected and it shoots right back up. Oh yeah, that REALLY sounds like Clinton doing a bad job.

    • Posted By: neocon @ 09/23/2008 5:05:38 PM

If you believe the MSM you would be right
      http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/01/bush-unemployment-at-50-bad-clinton.html
Bush Unemployment at 5.0%- Bad... Clinton Unemployment at 5.4%- Good
Something you will never hear from the mainstream news...
The average unemployment rate during the Bush years is running lower than during the Clinton years.

June 7, 1996-- Here is how the mainstream news (Dan Rather) reported that the unemployment rate jumped up to 5.6%:
???The government came out today with its latest report on unemployment. It says the unemployment rate rose slightly, 2/10ths of a point last month, up to 5.6 percent ??? still low overall. And the numbers, pure and simple, can be misleading. Economics correspondent Ray Brady tonight has the story behind them.???
January 4, 2007-- And, here is how the AP reported on the current unemployment rate of 5.0% today:
Hiring practically stalled in December, driving the nation's unemployment rate up to a two-year high of 5 percent and fanning fears of a recession.

Employers last month added the fewest new jobs to their payrolls in more than four years, according to the employment report released Friday by the Labor Department. The report showed that employment conditions are deteriorating, strained by a housing slump and credit crunch that are sapping economic strength.

"The economy is getting hit by some body blows. The big question is whether the economy can withstand it or will it take a fall," said Ken Mayland, president of ClearView Economics.

Even the Republican bloggers here have been persistent and belligerent in offering meaningless and deceptive garbage trying to distract and persuade without any accountability for pertinence or truth. One arrogantly and adamantly, as if an authority, even presented a super long list of philosophies for open markets, deregulation, etc. as to why the Republicans offer better economics, neglecting to admit everything he offered was slanted and full of errors. He was angry and aggressively challenging, looking for a fight but didn???t identify that he was so emotional because he was in the top income category and upset when thinking Obama may increase his taxes. He erroneously said small business would be hurt when Obama actually has promised to reduce their taxes along with large corporations who create jobs here (Obama has said 95% will receive a tax decrease and only those individuals earning over $250k and corporations exporting jobs and using loopholes to escape paying fair taxes would get increases). The blogger also offered that tax cuts for the wealthy create jobs and stimulate the economy, when common sense tells you different. The wealthy who already spend whatever they want don???t spend more when they get tax cuts, the poor and middle class do and get the money right back into the economy, stimulating it and even producing profits for companies and the wealthy. The trickle-down theory is a fraud as what we really have is a bubble-up economy. Tax cuts for the wealthy only make the wealthy wealthier and stimulate contributions for political campaigns and later kickbacks. Point by point answers could be provided but I really don???t want to go back and forth as neither of us will ever change our mind. The final proof is that the last eight years should convince anyone that there is a lot wrong with the Republican philosophies (especially noting that the only thing trickling down is the costs) and then history clearly shows that the best economic periods have always been under a Democratic government. Hard to factually or truthfully argue with that and again that is my real point. How can anyone put any faith in or vote for those that practice gross dishonesty?

  • Posted By: NewsWkDickG @ 09/23/2008 3:45:59 PM

I have a hard time understanding how anyone can accept dishonesty or even consider supporting those who offer nothing but gross dishonesty ??? I mean what are they suppose to be putting their faith in, obviously not anything that is being said. Over the last eight years Bush-Cheney-Rove-etal have been arrogant and even cocky while saying anything to rationalize, justify, excuse and just camouflage their total and belligerent focus on benefit for Special Interests and a select few, including themselves, while only giving the average American apathy, the costs and subterfuge (lies). All we have to do is look at the status of everything to see the severe negatives they have caused. Some say that was only them and is the past but the Republican Party has totally and completely supported all of it without ever showing any concern and only now, with the new campaign going on, are they saying they want to change things. Again, how can you even listen to them when you know they lie so easily and consistently? McCain-Palin say they are the agents for change when they are indebted to, committed to and in-bed-with those that supported Bush-Cheney and who are those who just want more of the same.

You are dreaming. The reason Obama will lose is the same reason you state above he is left of left and America is center right,. There is a difference between a roll for government and everyone on government rolls. We already have 40% of Americans paying zero income tax and Obama now offering those same Americans a check by taking money from others. This is as anti American as it comes. I like most Americans believe in a progressive tax system, but not blatant wealth redistribution. Obama will lose simply because he is socialist and most American's believe in limited government, freedom and self determination. That is what makes our country great and we have problems everytime we stray to far from those basic principals.

    • Posted By: KDKay @ 09/23/2008 1:57:13 PM

"Blatant wealth redistribution"? You mean like when GWB gave the wealthy a bunch of tax cuts and forced the middle-class to carry the burden of taxation for the wealthy?

  • Posted By: valark @ 09/23/2008 2:32:19 PM

Hrmmm and also, since you are all here...since Congress is actually the body that passes these laws and regulations or lack of...why do most people not apply the same intensity and concern for the offices held by those representatives?

  • Posted By: valark @ 09/23/2008 2:28:06 PM

I have to say, I am not either Democrat or Republican. I don't even see the need for alignment with one or the other. Why is Catamount an idiot because of what they believe or why is Boots an idiot for what they believe? The issue isn't pointing out how someone is right or wrong. Name one time in your life proving someone right or wrong even resulted in a peaceful outcome...an outcome of importance.

What I am against is this hatred, one-sided smashing and blaming. So are most people. That is why we have the same 100 posters on all these topics on the boards. The majority of America doesn't come here.

Take the time to understand why your opposing viewpoint is held by someone else and then considerately show them a way to believe in your views...wouldn't that be the most productive?

  • Posted By: prophet831 @ 09/23/2008 9:31:47 AM

What's funny is that republicans - with the no child left behind thing - are only working to make our students more ignorant of everything outside their comfort zone. They distract people with issues like Jamie Spears, American Idol, blahblahblah. Has anyone ever noticed how the television typically reflects the people in office - Republicans bring out the bubble gum that makes people forget about everything important and focus on themselves and their small worlds, while when Democrats are in office we have people funding entertainment that speaks against the government and tries to stress the stuff going on in the rest of the world. Have you heard one band that has become overplayed on the radio since 2000 that speaks against the government? All I hear the kids listening to is hip-hop, and bubble gum pop rock.

Republicans are trying to dumb down the nation so they can control it easier. Case in point - how many people went out and bought duct tape and cellophane when the Anthrax "threat" hit?

    • Posted By: melissaptx @ 09/23/2008 2:22:29 PM

Are you seriously trying to make a valid point?

The Republicans are producing American Idol?
Most celebrities/singers are Dems who are backing Obama.

Seriously this post was completely worthless.

The only three groups voting for Obama are blacks (94-3), yuppie elites, and college kids (and they don't show up to vote in general elections.) Obama is gonna get slaughtered in the election.

You must be from the Obama camp. Trying to make Republicans over confident. McCain remains the underdog. He is behind. All Obama has to do is make a good showing in the debates and not make any mistakes and he will be the next Commander in Chief. I hope that he will fulfill his campaing promise of disbanding the Detroit Red Wings and sending Red Wing fans on a forced migration accross the Baring Straits to where they belong. Siberia. Go Blackhawks.

Well I couldn't agree more that it's time to talk about issues. I disagree with the author the Republican of late have seriously addressed issues. McCain is suddenly for offshore drilling, after he was opposed to it because he feels the need to outline a difference between him and Obama, and that's about as far as they've all gone to talk about issues. The rest of it Rove tactics. They criticize Obama for "star power", then nominate Palin and play off of even more unwarranted star power. Obama gets criticized for Jerimiah Wright, and even gets slammed with a double standard because the media doesn't even touch John Hagee. John McCain doesn't discuss the economy much, in fact you can't even FIND mention of the national debt on the issues section of his website. He doesn't really discuss the environment much either. He talks about offshore drilling, and makes mention of alternative energy, but doesn't really outline a plan with much support for such alternatives. McCain may indeed have answers to various issues (and they might be right or wrong) but thus far he hasn't really discussed them much.

Mr Darman you may be correct. My opinion on most issues is conservative. Most say I must be Republican. Thats where the Democrats and Republicans mess up. Pushing issues Right or Left not Right and Left is the problem. To vote because of race or sex is just wrong. And actually believe America is center-Left.

Ideas are not poison. Hatred of free thinking is. If you don't like the way things are, make them better... Don't be throwing bricks at the other guy, it looks stupid and scares normal people. Convince the normal people you wioll safe guard and take care of those interests. That was the basis of the theory put forth here.
"gobbledegook" is just another way of saying I don't want to understand nor will I have the guts to argue my point...The NRA wasn't mentioned in the article at hand... All you are doing is blowing smoke on the issue...

People Wake up. Sen Obama messed up, He Won. As the economy crashes, people get angry, and with anger is hate. Sen Clinton probably would have won, now all the votes that are beyond ticked with President Bush will actually vote McCain. If there in one issue that every American voter really wants its a Liberal/Conservative. 20%Liberal 80% Conservative. A Clinton/Obama ticket would have lasted 16 years. Now It looks like McCain2008 McCain2012, 8Yrs as VP Palin 2016, Palin 2020. Disagree but do you really believe Obama2008 Obama2012 Clinton2016 I dont think so.

Obama won't win if you can help it. How many people do you know messed up by WINNING? The race is about Obama vs McCain now. You know what happens when you keep looking behind you while racing right?

As long as the Democratic party watches for voting area 'troubles' and voting machine 'failures' in known pro Obama areas we should do fine.

The Democrats on this comment board, answer me a few questions:

Barack Obama promises hundreds of billions of dollars in news spending, a universal health care system (including the 10's of millions of illegals--gotta pander the latinos!), 150 billion for alternative fuels, increased education spending, increased welfare spending, increased unemployment benefits, Global warming initiatives, faith based initiatives, increase troop levels in Afghanistan, (he's not going to get soldiers out of Iraq for at least two years), AND GIVE 95% OF AMERICANS A TAX CUT, WITH $1000 REBATES!

He'll pay for this HOW? By raising taxes on the top 5% of taxpayers. GOT IT. Great plan. Those evil sum-bi-ch-es deserve to have their money stolen. QUESTION: They already pay about 40% of the tax burden in this country...WILL OBAMA RAISE IT TO 60%? CEO's in Fortune 500's will not take a paycut, what do you think will happen?

THEY'LL RAISE PRICES ON SHOES, BIKES, FOOD, CLOTHES...YOU KNOW THAT USELESS STUFF THAT POOR PEOPLE DON'T NEED TO BUY. You'll get a 100 dollar tax cut courtesy of Obama, and your cost of living will go up by 500. NICE PLAN GENIUS.

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS WILL STOP HIRING.

MID-LEVEL INVESTORS, THAT MEANS MIDDLE CLASS--WILL STOP INVESTING AND PUT THEIR MONEY INTO BONDS.

OBAMA WILL SEND US STRAIGHT BACK TO JIMMY CARTER'S 1970;S.

    • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 09/22/2008 1:08:40 PM

Record high gas prices, unemployment, interest rates and inflation rising. Sounds like we are already re-living the 1970's. Real incomes are down. Home prices and stock market in the dump. Bush proposes billing you other taxpayers a billion dollars to bail out Merril Lynch and all the others, even foreign firms like AIG. You sir are the genius.

      • Posted By: dale rutherford @ 09/22/2008 1:28:18 PM

You mean the Jimmy Carter 70s where he told the united states that we were the most wasteful nation on earth (true), that to secure our future as a world leader we would need to develop alternative energy sources and conserve (true), that unlike the rest of the world our cars are to large and energy inefficent (true), that if we didnt contain our energy demand and stop importing foreign oil that the Saudis would have us by the throat (true), that we should immediately start developing public transportation (he was correct - true), that we would end up in wars in the middle east to protect our energy interests (true more than once).

Of course Carter inherited an economy that was staggered by inflation, plus he in remembered as the whimp who actually leveled with the citizens of the united states .. told them to get off their butts, conserve energy, and work hard. Reagan has a better idea. Lets get out the VIsa card, run up huge debts, and ignore the problems facing the country for a few years.

Here is a thought: If you voted for Bush the last two elections you were wrong. You screwed my country with your vote for social and religious wedge issues, and now you are about to be wrong again. Hey .. maybe your being wrong the past eight years means you should stay home and not vote. Maybe its time to try something else, like future planning, data driven reponses to economic and military issues. The whole talking to god thing that Bush (and now Palin) are big fans of doesnt seem to be working.

        • Posted By: boots07 @ 09/23/2008 12:55:34 PM

The mess was caused by the Clinton adminstration. you need to do your homework before you start spewing out garbage. I think everything that Obama has touched has turned sour. Look at his record. Why does everyone blame the current adminstration when it is something that happened years ago it is just catching up to us know. The democratic house and senate hasn't seemed to accomplish much in two years either.

      • Posted By: vstillwell @ 09/22/2008 1:31:01 PM

You get so caught up in your fears you can't see the forest through the trees. Look around. Your beloved Republican party got things so screwed up they had to socialize Wall Street and Detroit. George Bush, Dick Chenney, John McCain, Sarah Palin will go down in the annuls as America's worst leaders.
