"The Vice Presidency of America", so simple, even a Caveman or Hockey Mom could do it.

    • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 3:50:19 PM

Yeah, and with a little more experience, Obama might even be able to do it!!!

  • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 09/20/2008 6:48:17 PM

Elite is Obama as he explains vaguely how Americans Suck First ( Except for you who agree with him!). There are many who voluntarily accept the message so as to be the exception, and feel good!
This kind of elite wages discrimination campaigns against Americans and the Americans Suck First campaign has several discrimination campaigns woven in! Without the discrimination campaigns the Americans Suck First Campaign disintigrates! And the elite exposed as a sham!
I don't believe Americans Suck first... or that Americans suck at all! Nor do I believe America sucks.! There fore I don't need too feel like an eliteist's "special" exception when the premise is so wrong, so foul and so manipulative!
McCain and Palin do not wage the discrimination campaigns of the Americans Suck First campaign, where as Obama has one of it's architects on his ticket!

Enter Your Comment Pointing out how we can improve ourselves into being an even better country is not being an America hater. Too many people seem to think it is enough to be able to show that someone else is worse. I wouldn't allow my kid to get away with that sort of excuse. America isn't perfect, but i want to work to make it closer to perfection and so does Barak Obama.

You constantly treat us to the dribble that flows from your mind. thank you. You keep ranting about this mythical AmericanS Suck First campaign. I've told you this before, but I'll say it again: PLEASE STOP READING THOSE EMAILS THAT COME FROM RIGHTWINGNUTJOB.ORG. THEY'RE FAKE!

      • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 09/21/2008 7:16:23 AM

It's drivel that comes from Obam, Biden, Feinstein, Kennedy, Clinton,Schumer.... It's their "template"when speaking to America! They have a hate list of Americans , and lies, attacks, and half truths. Then they say they oppose discrimination of any kind!
They have used it since the late 1960's. And it was formal and locked together by the late 1970's. that's log before anyone was getting Emails. There are Americans these people hate, And Americans are great people! America a great country! These hatefull jerks want you to believe Americans Suck and America Sucks and only they have the special magic power to fix it! It's their gimmick.
The elitist use the politics of division! It is why the Congress has such poor approval and explains how Gore and Kerry lost their bids for the White House.Newsweek never explains those loses as the results of a hate wave.
maybe you should be carefull of what you read.

"The elitist use the politics of division! It is why the Congress has such poor approval..."

          A) Who has used division to tear this country in two for the last eight years?

          B) Why, in spite of low approval ratings, is the Democratic Party expected to increase its majority in BOTH the House and Senate? Ponder on these thoughts my dear boy. ; )

          • Posted By: uthink @ 09/22/2008 6:37:41 AM

To answer your question Pelosi and Reid has been at the heart of the divide for the last 8 years. In addition the map for Senate and Congress are changing. Also with 97% of OBAMA's vote aligned with Reid (DEMS), do you really believe all this bi-partisan talk from OBAMA? OBAMA will bow at the alter to the Moveon.org group, Pelosi and Reid. I for one want a better America . Talk's cheap.....

            • Posted By: son_shine @ 09/22/2008 11:00:13 AM

So offer an alternative. Is McCain/Palin going to put this country in a better position? How?

  • Posted By: SurferMom @ 09/22/2008 3:37:51 PM

Why are people in Alaska and the Mid-West and the West considered better concerned with freedon? I think most people on both East and West coasts are extremely concerned with freedom and I find Mrs. Palin's great disdain for people like me on the "far right East coast" as she so nastily put to be very ignorant and dismissive.Michael Gerson is wrong in his assesment and is very tied to Bush 43 White House politics.

  • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 09/22/2008 9:37:28 AM

Palin only recently even received a passport. Electing her to police the world would be like choosing a neighborhood cop who had never left the house. Obama's superior knowledge and command of the issues has been obivious to millions of voters already. Palin has yet to show a command of the issues. Being a backwoods populist was hardly platable to voters in the 1900s when most of the country was rural and government was limited. Bush has now overseen the largest expansion of nation building in Iraq and Socialist economics by taking over the financial sector. Our next president will need more than just the "executive" experience of presiding over a giant oil well of a state with more caribou than people.

    • Posted By: cowen123456 @ 09/22/2008 10:22:50 AM

I have had my passport for 20 years and have traveled to about 15 countries. Yet, I know for certain that I can never run a city or a state while raising 5 children and have an 80% approval rating. I like the idea that Palin has not traveled much, she will have a clear fresh and unbias angle onto world affairs that will be refreshingly optimistic.

Enter Your Comment: You have got to be kidding. That is like saying if you had a print shop, and it wasn't making money, you would fire the print shop manager and hire a plumber to run it. Being completely ignorant about an issue doesn't qualify you to cure it or fix it or anything else. Why must republicans celebrate ignorance and denigrate knowledge? (Notice this is not about being smart or dumb, or experienced vs. not experienced.)

      • Posted By: son_shine @ 09/22/2008 10:43:56 AM

Well, maybe she'll have more babies while in office and increase her "experience" for people like you. That'll be a change so it must be good for the country.

  • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 1:46:23 PM

The democrats have been screwing the poor and minorities for 60 years or more. They just give them enough to get by and keep them voting for them. You dems know the game, most of your votors are uneducated and can't figure out that they're being taken year after year. Just throw them a fish day after day and they'll become so dependent that they'll have to keep voting for you because they've stopped providing for themselves because it's easier to take that free fish than to learn to fish for themselves.

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/22/2008 3:06:27 PM

You like history? Seems DC people don't fish either, they take the poor to middle class fish instead. Reps have been screwing the poor for 68 years. There's history there.

      • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 3:24:28 PM

Believe what you want moron but the democrats have exploitation of the poor down to a science and the poor can't wait to rush back to the polls to vote for them again. You guys are skillful, I'll give you that.

    • Posted By: Vladmac @ 09/22/2008 2:12:59 PM

Oh yea, that's right, I forgot: there wasn't any poverty or unemployment before FDR invented welfare.

      • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 2:55:08 PM

Hey moron, there always was and always will be poverty. It's just that, until then, nobody had used the poor to their advantage. The democrats saw a niche and filled it. They found a way to exploit the poor to the democrat???s advantage.

        • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/22/2008 3:07:37 PM

You say that, but you know you have it wrong, backward, reversed and out-of-phase. Why lie like McCain?

          • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 3:21:43 PM

WOW AskPlus!!! That was almost as good an argument as "same to you buddy". Good job.

  • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 12:30:39 PM

Bush is no conservative. Neither is McCain but he's WAY better that a socialist/Islamic candidate like Obama.

    • Posted By: Vladmac @ 09/22/2008 2:11:17 PM

Obama is neither a socialist nor a muslim.

      • Posted By: jwaldrop3 @ 09/22/2008 3:03:58 PM

        You are wrong. He's both.

  • Posted By: kingdc @ 09/21/2008 1:39:15 AM

The reason why the author of this article is wrong is that Sarah Palin is running for President of the United States and not Miss America. Running for president isn't another beauty pageant or popularity contest, it's a race for the most "elite" job in the world, and having things like a good education, or demonstrated interest in foreign affairs should be something we look for. And yes - experience does matter. Obama has experience that is relevant to the job he is running for, and Palin doesn't.

Personally I think she would make a good talk-show host or subject of a reality TV show, because she really is easy to relate to.

    • Posted By: fccFH @ 09/22/2008 12:23:59 PM

Maybe if Palin is offered a job hosting the time slot after Oprah she will just go away...

  • Posted By: Hatter @ 09/21/2008 9:24:22 PM

This argument would be much more effective, nay, perhaps even convincing, if we had had the pleasure of hearing one word from this down-home folksy "populist" that was not written for her by the "washington elite."

We don't have a sitcom script to follow for the next four years. We need leaders, not the all star cast from Bonanza.

    • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 09/21/2008 10:06:47 PM

My friend, I have been saying this for a while: McCain/Palin is not a presidential ticket, it's a sitcom!

      : )

      • Posted By: fccFH @ 09/22/2008 11:12:37 AM

Cazador1972- I totally agree. The sad thing is, as we have seen with the likes of American Idol- Americans have a tendency to show more interest in this type of subject matter. They are so intrigued and energized by the prospect that the equivalent of the Spears family could be infiltrating the West Wing. I wonder if they will sign on MTV to do a reality series- Keeping up with Palins, the Simple Life: Palin and Crew, or maybe the Washington Hillbillies?

Oh shoot- I guess by making these jokes I am being an elitist too.

  • Posted By: timrogers @ 09/22/2008 10:43:37 AM

The type of people who support Palin are 'fools, peasants and theocrats'. That is and has been the problem in this country since inception. The so called genius of our system has given far too much power to such people. Because of the two senators from each state rule , these voters have been able to control the agenda as a permanent minority. Their self reliance is a myth funded by goverment jobs, government subsidies, and government programs. Alaska is 99% owned by the federal government , and completely finded by oil revenues given to the state. It depends on big government for survival as do most western states. Without the government spending they love to hate, their standard of living would disappear. I guess they consider cashing government checks a special form of self reliance and independence.

  • Posted By: DoRight @ 09/22/2008 9:04:20 AM

PS It's quite evident that we have no clue about Palin's thoughts on the most pressing issues facing our government because she herself has never given any serious thought to them herself. Such are the privileges of her government experience thus far.

  • Posted By: emmarcee @ 09/22/2008 8:26:26 AM

vow, great article! soemthing that needs to be filed for future!

  • Posted By: DoRight @ 09/22/2008 8:24:44 AM

The relevant question is whether Palin has the slightest idea what she would do about a host of issues if McCain were to be disabled by a stroke or any other health condition during his tenure, especially early on. Imagine the chaos, especially in world financial markets if this were to happen, not to mention the testing of her resolve by foreign powers and terrorists at that particular time. Gerson's article is patently insane when it comes to contemplating having such a person as a world leader. Of the four in the running, this is one person about whom we have no clue (and are not going to be given any, if the RNC has its way), and the signs of her competence, apart from giving scripted stump speeches and sound bites, are not promising.

  • Posted By: RurrrJurrr @ 09/22/2008 1:30:30 AM

Dear Member of the Elite Michael Gerson, please help me. I don't know if I'm an "elitist" or not. I live on the east coast but in a small town; I grew up working class but I have an advanced degree; I don't drive a Volvo, but I do work at a university; I don't shoot animals but I do eat sushi; I don't own a flag but I cover my heart when singing the national anthem; I don't have a pregnant teenager but I want every right for my godsons. Do those of us within these parameters deserve a say in what goes on in America? Are we American, too? Can you even see me from your elite perch up on high? Will I have to use small words, lie about my (few) accomplishments, prey on the fears and vanities of increasingly insecure people? What? Will intellectual honesty ever matter?

  • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 09/21/2008 11:33:51 PM

Ohhh, I couldn't resist. From Newsweek itself:

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/160091

    Who's the elitist now? : )

  • Posted By: Desert Storm Survivor @ 09/21/2008 11:05:50 PM

Mr. Gerson should heed Senator McCain's motto of "Country First" and admit like his fellow conservatives who choose to be honest (Senator Hagel, David Brooks, and George Will) and acknowledge that a Palin presidency (as surely it will be if we elect a man who has had stage 4 melanoma--a death sentence) would be even more disastrous than the man he supported for the past eight years. Put country first Mr. Gerson and admit you supported the most disastrous presidency in the history of this country and you now advocate another disastrous presidency in the making all because you would rather be intellectually dishonest and support a party that drove this country off the cliff.

  • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 09/21/2008 10:44:39 PM

Mr. Gerson, for the last eight years we have been led by a president who like Palin had wide appeal among the common folk because they felt he was just like them. A president who eschewed intellectualism, critical analysis and followed his gut... How did that turn out?

  • Posted By: eatnutmeg @ 09/21/2008 10:29:48 PM

Gerson worked for Bush - he wrote many of Bush's most out of touch and wrong statements (eg on Iraq). So no surprise that he gets it wrong on Bush/McCain/Palin.

  • Posted By: eatnutmeg @ 09/21/2008 10:28:19 PM

Palin is not conversant is the national or int'l issues of the day. She shows few signs of having tried to engage on the most important questions of our nation. In that way, she is just like Pres. Bush and we are paying the price now in blood and treasure.

McCain has a lot of experience - at getting it wrong. On the big foreign policy question of the decade - what to do after 9/11 (including whether to invade Iraq) McCain got it totally wrong. He hurt America as a result.

  • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 09/21/2008 10:05:06 PM

This opinion piece is misleading. First of all, although I appreciate the nuanced distinction that Bryan was opposed to Social Darwinism (most people think of him as a simpleton who just opposed "evolution") the writer weasels the premise that Obama is elitist as a valid premise and that the Democratic Party approves not of populism.

    1) This is about Obama and McCain, not Obama vs Palin.

    2) Obama, for all the "elitist" credentials the right wing is desperately trying to tag on him, only began earning a decent salary a little over a decade ago. Obama was raised on food stamps, McCain is the son and grandson of Navy Admirals.

    3) The questioning of Palin is not based on her appeal to the common folk, is that she appeals to them in spite of espousing economic views that has taken health care away from those same people and made them poorer while the rich get richer. Don't take my word for it, look at the Census Bureau data.

    4) Well-educated equals NOT elitist. If I had a brain tumor I'd want the most elite surgeon available to operate not a populist. Obama is NOT an elitist, although Mr. Gerson desperately wishes he was.

  • Posted By: tebbiki @ 09/21/2008 9:07:16 PM

Michael Gerson should be ashamed of himself. William Jennings Bryan actually wrote the words he so famously spoke. Palin just read something someone else wrote. Since in her past she was once a sports-caster (or weather girl or something) it's fair to say she's got teleprompter experience. Is that all Gerson expects from a candidate? As a former speech writer Gerson must see the unfairness of the comparison, but anything and anyone is fair game when what you're going for is spin.
If reading from a teleprompter well is the only criteria for VP (or president for that matter) why not Katie Couric? Oh wait. Katie Couric would probably be honest enough to admit she wasn't qualified for such an important job. What you really need to be VP, apparently, is to be a good reader who doesn't pause to blink AND have an ego so large that you can convince yourself you're all ready and full of readiness without actually having any pertinent qualifications.
