John McCain realizes that the Democrats under the leadership of Barack Obama want to effectively give away in trust our offshore exclusive economic zone by standing in the way of any current offshore development. Under the 1982 United Nations Law of the Seas Convention the US has an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles and mineral seabed rights up to 350 nautical miles extending along the Continental shelf. A nautical mile is 6080 feet so our exclusive economic zone extends about 240 miles and mineral seabed rights extend 420 miles. The US has the world's largest offshore exclusive economic zone totaling 4.4 million square miles. In comparison, the total land area of the United States is only 3.4 million square miles.
On the East coast alone, if you drive from Key West Florida to Bangor Maine it is 2000 miles. Multiply the 2000 miles by mineral seabed rights extending out 420 miles results in a total of 840,000 square miles of ocean acreage. Because we have the world's largest offshore coastline which is twenty-five percent greater than our land area, it only makes common sense that we exploit our offshore resources to achieve our energy independence.

John McCain understands that under the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift, 300 million years ago when oil was formed all of the continents were one supercontinent called Pangea. The continents then drifted apart. The Africa coast was right up against North Carolina 300 million years ago. Today half of the oil production of Nigeria is now offshore and the odds of large offshore deposits off our east coast are very strong. There are also huge oil deposits off of east coast of Brazil. Brazil has tied up almost all of the world ocean drilling ships in the hopes of developing those deposits. Given there is confirmed oil off of Brazil, likely oil off the Southern US east coast and there is confirmed large deposits south of Newfoundland then it is likely there is oil all up and down the entire United States east coast. The United States has the largest coastline in the world and it is simple common sense to make use of those offshore resources to achieve our energy independence. John McCain energy proposals will bring about this development that we so desperately need.

The liberal Media ,largely Jewish controlled, and anti-Christian, continues to do all it can to smear Mrs. Palin. Why? Wait until Obama is elected and his true Muslim sympathy comes out! By, By, Israel!

McCain is a leader, an independant and a maverick. Those popel who think they are liberals should be ashamed to criticize a man who puts his country first. If you have any doubts about anyone it is should be Obama, the man who has to prepare to give a "speech" that promises you things he cannot deliver. He spent his summer in Europe and Hawaii and did not want to debate McCain when asked 10 times. Obama is a fraud, and if you liberal losers don't get that, so are you

I thought that the comments section was going to be an intelligent discussion of the story at hand. That story is about the significant problems associated with building a natural gas pipeline to ensure security of supply to the lower 48, through a foreign country, namely Canada. Why is there no discussion happening about the competing proposal which would have seen an all-american route using the existing oil pipeline right of way to Valdez, Alaska and LNG tankers to the west coast??

Its funny how the article refers to the Indigenous people as "Indians". We are not from India, we are indigenous to this land in which the Government of both countries want to destroy at the cost of our lives. Also, the article says that its "premature" to consult with us? What the government views as premature is viewed by us as too late. Consultation must happen as soon as a proposed project is even thought of. The ironic thing about this article is the headline "pipeline to nowhere", if you read the last paragraph, those words are coming from the First Nations people, the Indigenous people of this land. That's exactly what its going to be, or more so, a pipeline to destruction.

In other words, not "indians" at all. Americans. Real Americans.

Mammy Yokium, Alaska style is closeted in secrecy by the McSame men in black for good reason, she is only a show off with no education or experience.I was a mayor of a town with 15,000 people and went to work at a real job during the day and got paid for working at mayor to the tune of $4,000-. per year after getting home at night and on weekends. There was a town manager with a degree paid $70,000. per year.just like Palin. When she goes to the U.N. for her quicky education on the world politics subject she should stop and see Yogi Berra for lessons on catching and managing a baseball team.
Sarah,Kissinger may sound like a moose but don't shoot him even if he deserves it

    • Posted By: BexHi @ 09/23/2008 2:54:54 PM

to all you double faced people democrats! - dont start talking that Gov. Sarah Palin has no experience and therefore is not VP worthy - since your very own presidential nominee Obama has ZERO experience in anything - nothing - no experience - in fact when he is asked a qwuestion he has to ask 40 people before making a decision since he doesnt know himself and is too ignorant in anything - SO first stop comparing Gov. Palin who is a VP to a president since you all should be ashame that Obama was your top choice whne he has nothing to offer - clearly this is the best you had, atleast Sen. McCain has ALL of the experience needed to run a country and he is running as president - and second look at what you have before you go start critisizing the otehr party since you have NOTHING to show for yourself- shame on you all guys for sinking so low in filth for bashing and lying about a woman when you know what you say about her is not true - stop kidding yourself!

      • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 09/25/2008 7:03:22 PM

Still missing the mark, BexHi. Much of the opposition to Palin isn't coming from the Democrats. I don't like her either.

        Republicans for Obama!

  • Posted By: DOYLESPAR@VERIZON.COM @ 09/23/2008 1:47:15 PM

The MAMMY YOKUM OF ALASKA should see Yogi Berra on her visit to NYC, learn to catch and manage a baseball team as well while learning all about world politics in her two day stay.
Don't shoot Kissinger Sarah, he only sounds like a Moose.
She is a disgusting Republican joke. Some religioous folks used to think having a grandchild required marriage of the parents first but apparantly the religious right is so far right they are LEFT.in the Alaskan tundra with brain freeze. Nice example for American teens as the millionaires convention cheers them on.

Typical - typical you democrats - nowadays when its totally acceptable by ALL parties to have a baby before marriage and you condemn Gov. Sarah Palins daughter for being pregnant when your own elected party leader Obama is a product of a teenage pregnancy - shut up you all and practice what you preach!

      • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 09/25/2008 6:59:29 PM

At the very end, BexHi, you finally put your finger on it. Palin isn't criticized because she has a daughter who had a baby out of wedlock. She is criticized because this event underscores the moral bankruptcy of her stated positions on family matters, including the abject failure of "abstinence only" education. Her camp speaks of the "courageous choice" her daughter made in bringing her unplanned and inconvenient pregnancy to term, but it is precisely that "choice" that Palin would deny to other women (one wonders how much of a "choice" it was for the daughter, for that matter). A thought: perhaps there is just a little more domestic drama in the Palin family than voters will be comfortable with; after all, she's trying out for first back-up to leader of the free world. It would be nice if it looked like she could focus on the job.

I am a strong supporter of Barack Obama....but enough with the petty attacks on Palin. We need to focus on the fact that she is grossly underqualified to be first in line for the Presidency.... In addition to being the single worst President since Andrew Johnson, George W. Bush has single handedly dumbed down the office. There was a time in our history when the President was thought to be the best and brightest of a bright nation. Presidents were tough or weak....but they were always outstanding individuals. With Bush we have a man of privilege who covers for his intelllectuall shortcomings with the "Hey, I'm just a regular guy" bullcrap. He has paved the way for people who are barely qualified to manage the local Wal-Mart to become president....It was true that in America anyone born here could become President.....PROVIDED THAT THEY WERE EDUCATED AND QUALIFIED.....the fact that Sarah Palin is a soccer mom does nothing to qualify her to become the leader of the free world....she manages a state which is tiny in terms of its population and knows literrally nothing about the world, let alone geo-political trends and issues.....vote for her and you will be a contributing to the continued George Bushing of this hurting nation.

    • Posted By: BexHi @ 09/23/2008 3:27:55 PM

funny how Cammatt writes that Gov Palin is first in line for Presidency - I have news for you she will be VP and Sen McCain will be President - and if you would like to compare the knowledge and experience between them and Obama and Biden - yep Obama and Biden fail miserably - Obama has done NOTHING as state sen. Gov. Palin atleast has executive experience and Sen. McCain has all the experience needed to keep our country safe from all the terrorists Obama has been hanging out with. Obama would just hand our country right to the terrorist - and 9/11 would God forbid be back - bigger and larger - and may even target you this time - so think clearly - who has experience McCain or Obama? we all know the truth its McCain - and thats what matters most importnatly. In addition to which in that short time Obama was Sen of his state he had always been a supporter of raising taxes - why dont you just offer your money to charity rather than to give it to the gov. McCain has proven may times over to vote for lowering taxes - and therefore is the only one with experience in the issues that matters most to our country!

      • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 09/25/2008 6:48:30 PM

BexHi, with all due respect, "first in line for the Presidency" and "VP" describe the same position. The Vice President is "first in line for the Presidency" in the Consitutional order of succession to that office. "First in line for the Presidency" clearly doesn't mean the same thing as "President", since the President already has that job, and so couldn't be considered "in line" for it. You are confused.

Shame on you Newsweek. Wheres your balance? In the last 3 weeks you have written 17 atrilces that have a negative light on McCain / Palin but zero.. ZILch on Obama / Biden.. readers dont need to wonder where your allegiance is.

  • Posted By: rwper1 @ 09/23/2008 8:54:33 PM

All these argument are moot. Sarah Palin isn't running for president. Obama is. If you compare her credentials with his, Obama is exactly what real analysts say he is - an empty suit, a zero. If Palin scares you, then you ought be be digging your grave if you're not afraid of Obama, based on his history and his performance record. There simply isn't any comparison that you can make that substantiates your support of Obama. Period!

    • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 09/25/2008 6:37:23 PM

Considering McCain's age and family history, and how quickly the Presidency seems to age its occupants, Sarah Palin IS running for the Presidency, implicitly, in standing for the office of Vice President. The primary (and only) qualification for the office of Vice President is to be qualified to be President. If Palin isn't qualified to be President, then, by definition, she isn't qualified to be Vice President.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Gov. Palin gave the natural gas pipeline contract to a Canadian firm? No U.S. company with U.S. workers could build a tube across Alaska?

I can't blame the canadian native community for being aprehensive about oil projects on their lands. im sure they have had enough experience in the alberta tar sands to realize what their land rights and compensation should be. make no mistake these aren't the steryotypical indians of yesteryear ready to be exploited by big business. these are savy business people and the dificulty they pose in negotiations is a testament their view of mother earth's value and their duty to be her custodian.
