Wow, what a fascinating story! Now, I've changed my mind on this election, and it all came down to the number of cars owned! Hopefully Mr. Naughten and Ms. Shenfeld will recieve an award for this journalistic prize.

"Once 50 cent's preferred car" Are you serious? How low of you to imply that, what does 50 cent have to do with Obama? That they're both black? Is that why you're making that lame association? If Obama was a white Joe Smith would you have made your stupid comparison? NO. What a joke of an article... let's focus on the issues.

I think the intention of including 50 Cent was that he's a rapper, living large with champagne and hos, and he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

I thought it was a very odd "incidental reference" as well. What's 50 Cent have to do with ANY of this?!

Just out of curiosity...what will you do if you can not get Mr. Obama elected? Will you rev up a big old Caprice and careen about town....or will you put around in a Prius...either way you won't be ethical journalists.

What an absolutely stupid article! I have 10 vehicles but that is because several are old collectibles, I have 5 kids and we live on acreage like McCain does so we also have trucks. This means nothing. You are trying to hide the fact that Obama is also a multi-millionaire as is his wife. If you want to know the real measure of people, look at their charitible gifts and activities, not how many cars are registered in their name. By the way, all of the kids cars are still in my name for the most part, I must be rich, who would have thought it...

You know what I find interesting: How fast the Obama team responded to this article via conference call. Hmm.

  • Posted By: journalismgraduate @ 09/21/2008 7:11:13 PM

You know what's weird: How fast the Obama campaign responded to this article via conference call. It's almost like it was coordinated. Hmmmm.

Nice column, Mr. Naughton and Ms. Shenfeld. It gave me a thought: Do you remember how the McCains have seven houses? Has anyone checked to see whether the McCains designated more than one of them as their homestead? You may have only one homestead at a time. Homestead designation helps in many respects - the homestead, or at least homestead up to a certain value, is exempt from execution to pay debts. Of more importance in McCain's case, homestead designation gets you a break on your property taxes. Worth looking into if not already done.

The Republican economic plan is to give them a blank check to bail out failed businesses at taxpayer expense, businesses that failed because of Republican legislation. The Republicans, however, in the person of John McCain, do not intend to bail out the taxpayer -- McCain's advice to the rest of us -- we should "get a second job." Meanwhile, the McCains have their pick of 7 or 8 houses & 13 cars, & they won't be getting second jobs to pay for the gas. I don't mind that they're rich -- I mind that they're callous & careless of the rest of us.

    • Posted By: An Average Joe @ 09/21/2008 6:56:44 PM

      Well said!

      • Posted By: An Average Joe @ 09/21/2008 7:04:57 PM

Oh yes...McCain thinks we should "get a 2nd job" to pay the bills....(has he looked at UNEMPLOYMENT lately?! What companies are going to be hiring these people for their SECOND job, when we can't keep many people employed with their first job - because we let jobs get sent overseas by the barrel?

Oh...and women should also get "more education" if they want to make as much money as a man in the same job. He doesn't get it. We're talking about the SAME JOB. We're not saying the secretary should make as much as the CEO with a degree....it's just that the CEO with breasts SHOULD make as much as the CEO without them.

I don't care if they all drive a one-legged horse. The issues are whats important. It's all most election time. We need to get down to business.

We should all thank newsweek for this article. I mean how could we vote for someone without knowing how many cars they own? In fact I think we should schedule a 4th debate about this very important issue. :)

This just really goes to show McCain is totally OUT OF TOUCH! There is no way that McCain can understand what the average individual is going through! That's why McCain can say with a straight face....THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY IS STRONG! McCain just doesn't get it!!!

  • Posted By: nmmamma @ 09/21/2008 6:38:39 PM

Well, this article may not be "hot news," but it does reinforce that John McCain is NOTHING like me. I own one house--not 17--and own one car. On the other hand, I can identify most with Barack Obama. I have absolutely nothing in commone with someone who lives off the inheritance of his wife, has never had to worry about a mortgage payment, and actually works for a living. This article just reinforces to me that McCain is not in touch at all with the middle class. He's a card-carrying member of the wealthy, and that is where his interests life. If we middle class people have any hope for the future, it would behoove us to put in someone who can identify with our situation. And from my perspective, that's Obama.

As Rodney King would say, "Can't we just all get along?" I am very disappointed with both the left and the right, Dems and GOP. This is truly a ridiculous issue. We are all Americans, lets do everything we can to come together, not drift apart. We're all not going to be totally happy with the way this great country is run, but if we can all just give a little bit, we can still be a great country. From a proud American.

This is a really dumb story - hardly worth the time invested to research its "facts"!

    • Posted By: alpha_nu_916 @ 09/21/2008 3:35:11 PM

"facts." you make it sound like newsweek's fabricated and fudged the story. the story may seem petty and inconsequential to you, advisor2009formcsame, but the FACTis that "mr. straight-talk express" has 13 cars.
i do, however, agree that the real issues should be discussed. mcsame get shis tailed kicked when he tries to explain his every-changing, amorpheous positions.

      • Posted By: Advisor2009 @ 09/21/2008 6:29:46 PM

Actually, I'm a strong supporter of Obama -- but not because of the number of cars he owns or drives.

  • Posted By: mrkhdsn @ 09/21/2008 6:27:13 PM

Gimme a break. There are numerous adult children in the McCain household. Alot of the cars are older and not worth much. This is a non-news item.

  • Posted By: rcd123 @ 09/21/2008 6:26:03 PM

How is it that 50 cent is relevant to this article. Suppose it was: "Like Tony Bennett, John McCain owns 13 cars." Theyre both old ass white men, so throw them into the same sentence?

  • Posted By: rcd123 @ 09/21/2008 6:23:04 PM

Suppose it read "Like Tony Bennett, John McCain owns 13 cars."

Doesn't make too much sense in that context does it? The only connection is that both are old ass white men.

  • Posted By: douggy @ 09/21/2008 6:21:23 PM

Frankly, I don't really care how many vehicles, houses, or how much money either candidate has. I don't think any President in recent history has been a two-car, one modest-house, small savings account family like most of us voters. I just want to know who is going to be the better leader for this country? Come on Newsweek, you can do better than this.

  • Posted By: jdripper @ 09/21/2008 6:20:19 PM

Oh wow and this passes for journalism these days. Let me guess the next great breaking story will be that he puts gas in the Cadillac. I know they can write a story with all of the obligatory hand wringing about campaigns not talking about the issues. They can pontificate about the lack of substance in the candidates statements and commercials. I do believe with these two writers if you put them together you might have a combined IQ of 100.
