Yeaaaa, riiiight, that's it, must be the kids!! I personally have bought each of my teenagers two to three cars each, just to ensure they get where they need to go. See? Evolution. Link. Missing. Way over your head apparently. And Limo's? Of course! Duh, due to security reasons ALL the candidates have to up the anty. We are talking about the election of the 'Leader of the Free World, and they are entitled to all the amenities the Secrect Service has to offer. Again, helllllooooooo people, wake up. The kids cars? LMAO

Who cares how many cars and how many houses! Let begrudge a person for doing well. It's far better that the McCain's can afford the things they have than the thousands of people who over extended themselves and bought things that they cannot afford or even pay for. Thus the reason we have the banking crisis we have today. Everybody wants everything RIGHT NOW! They don't know the first thing about working hard and saving up for their purchases, or about living within their means. Yes Cindy inherited alot. Good for her!

Given that the McCains are much older and more successful then the BHO's it is no wonder they have collected many assets along the way. Note that they have three "green" vehicles to the BHO's one. Last note; Just what kind/make of car(s) do the authors own, eh?

  • Posted By: clemwick @ 09/21/2008 2:20:03 PM

Perhaps the McCain's 6 or 7 driving age children have something to do with the disparity. With Barry in DC and Michelle my Bell in the Windy city, at least one of them must be riding to work in the back of a limo. It wiould be difficult for even the Messiah to carpool given that geography. Hey why don't you do a story on how many pairs of Barney pajamas even candidate's families own, or how many pairs of sunglasses each candidate owns, now that would make some real interesting reading.

It is almost sad to watch John McCain's carefully constructed "staright talk" narrative dissolve into a seemingly unending string of distortion, dissembling and -- at times -- confused ramblings. Almost. But not quite.

  • Posted By: clemwick @ 09/21/2008 2:14:14 PM

Perhaps McCain's driving age children have something to do with the disparity. 'with Barack in DC and Michelle in Chicago, one of them must be riding to work in the back of a limo, you aren't suggesting the Obama's are car pooling are you?

I think it's a great story, especially this week....just think of the dress that Cindy McCain wore on the night of the convention, it cost $300,000.00 and that could have two modest homes for those being stolen by people like them in the 'elite' and making money off the ordinary joe and jane.

  • Posted By: Advisor2009 @ 09/21/2008 2:04:14 PM

Please... while this may once again demonstrates that Obama is much more "in touch" with the realities of life for 95% of Americans today, it hardly warrants the investment of time and resources for a major news publication to investigate and report its "facts", Come on, Newsweek - let's raise your standards a bit here and delve into things far more relevant and substantive to determining which slate is better qualified to serve this country as President and VP.

  • Posted By: Eric M Shodeen @ 09/21/2008 12:33:04 PM

How about a discusssion about something that matters. Do we want to elect Obama and become a Socialist Government or elect McCain and retain what our Founding Fathers created which is a Democracic Government?

    • Posted By: amandadzk @ 09/21/2008 2:00:27 PM

Additionally, you should really consider the fact that we have Socialism currently going on IN THIS COUNTRY - for the CORPORATIONS that we are in the midst of bailing out - corporate welfare, anyone? Ummm, maybe you should research what Socialism is and then use critical thinking skills to infer and extrapolate what the government is doing by having to put up OUR money for this financial bailout of these gigantic failed companies.

Don't know about you, but I'd much rather bankroll universal healthcare for the tax-paying citizens of this country than bankroll more golden parachutes for the executives who let our financial system go down the drain....just saying....

    • Posted By: arizbob1940 @ 09/21/2008 1:11:46 PM

Mr. Shodeen had better check history when he says that McCain will retain what our Founding Farthers created. I suggest that he read Thom Hartmann's book "Screwed...The undeclared War Against the Middle Class" for a starter. I like the term "corporatocracy" Mr. Hartmann uses to describe what is happening in our company. Our country is being handed over to big business, the middle class is being destroyed, the American form of Aristocracy is growing, and our elected oficials are deeply involved. Hmmmm......government controlled by Big Business" is called what??? I think Webster defines this as fascism. One of the answers is for us, MIddle Class Folks, to educate ourselves what our elected officials are doing and vote them out of office. Far too often we voters get stuck on partisan politics, single issue thoughts, a candidate's personality, etc. and neglect looking where a candidate stands on issues or, maybe more importantly, what is their past record. If we did, there would be a large house cleaning of both Republicans and Democrats in Washington and in State Legislatures........

This is quite funny actually. All the talk McSame has made of Obama being an elitist seems to be coming back to him. GOOD. An elitist doesn't own just one house, juts one car dummies. An elitist will own several houses and cars, way more than they would ever need. The spirit of an elitist is to posess, posess, posess, and have more and better things than their neighbor. This is clear evidence McSame is an elitist, and is not the good 'ol regular joe he''d trying to convince swing votes he is. Good job NW, keep exposing these fools for what they are!

  • Posted By: cbat45 @ 09/21/2008 1:56:24 PM

Normally, I wound not agree with this petty article considering everything that is going on in the world, but McCain was the one who made the issue of Obama being out of touch and an elitist., so the fact McCain is still trying to protray himself as an average guy is laughable, insulting and hypocritical. Remember Hillary tried the same thing and look where it got her.

  • Posted By: newsweekl @ 09/21/2008 1:48:49 PM

give me a break, who really cares how many cars these politicians and their families own? Let's focus on the real issues. NewsWeek, you are suppose to provide the news to your readers and on weeks like this, I know there are true issues that can be discussed instead of this "crap"!

  • Posted By: Iwonder2 @ 09/21/2008 1:46:49 PM

The supposedly trained editors at NEWSWEEK missed the racism that many readers found blatant and this kind of racism is often repeated in most media across the country. .Passive racism is still racism. Even IF intrinsic subconsciously, this dangerous trait rears its ugly head more often than what many people think or want to accept, especially in themselves. Now, does anyone else think that race is not a huge factor in the race for President? How quickly and unfairly Michelle Obama got labeled a terrorist and unamerican for her observations about racism in America and for being especially proud for a history making occasion, yet, the media is not focusing on Sara and Tod Palin's ties to the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) particularly as it relates to Tod's deep and some say active participation in Alaska's State government affairs. If Michelle Obama had belonged to or had ties to some kind of separatist group like AIP and Barack had given several speeches and or attended some of their meetings, he would be out of the Presidential race. Why aren't the Palins considered possible terrorists and unamerican for their interest in un-uniting the Alaskan part of the United States? Why wouldn't Tod be considered a mole or a spy for the AIP like Michelle would if she had had an affiliation with a group like AIP?

It took not one but two top notch Newsweak reports to come up with this gem. I would also like to know who made the decision to give them the go ahead to research this piece. I mean we are only facing an economic crisis the like of which we have never seen but someone at Newsweak thought this issue deserved more attention. What happened to this magazine? Are they in jeopardy of losing readership to the National Inquirer? I will sleep better tonight know Newsweak is researching those key issues that effect my life.

    Hiraeth,

Fine to vote on "judgement," but unless you are British, you'd better learn to spell the word (judgment) first.

  • Posted By: arizbob1940 @ 09/21/2008 1:39:55 PM

Citadelgrrlo5 (comment below) hit the nail on the head. The comment (from hiraeth) referenced claimed that the McCains "lived the American Dream." Hiraeth are you crazy? People are mistaking Barack's confidence in himself and what he is after. This is not being elite. This is called intelligence and judgement, things John McCain doesn't have! Cindy McCain, mentioned during an interview I watched, that she she got her pilot's license and bought an airplane because that was the only way you could get around in Arizona! I live in Arizona and find I get around Arizona just fine in my Car! I hope that the voters can see through idiotic claim that McCain "feels their pain." ......and ,yes, is what a very cheap shot to mention 50-cent and a McCain's license plate number. That is not responsible journalism. Where are your editors?

  • Posted By: LongTimeLiberal52 @ 09/21/2008 12:51:22 PM

Good grief, hiraeth - I don't even know where to begin. "Media bias"? Seems like every time I turn on the TV or pick up a newsmagazine there's nothing but fawning over Saint Sarah, nothing but Right-wing talking heads, nothing but excuse after excuse for the falsehoods being spread by the Republican candidates.

And as for those "real issues at hand, the economy, the war, national security, immigration, education, health care" - surely you can't contend with a straight face that McCain trumps Senator Obama on ANY of these topics. Tell me how four more years of the same disastrous approaches to any of those issues is a plus in your book.

    • Posted By: hiraeth @ 09/21/2008 1:16:54 PM

LongTimeLiberal52, good grief, to use your own terminology, have you been hibernating for the past 18months and only tuned in to the media these past few weeks since the Republican Convention? You really believe that the media is not biased towards Obama? In regards to the important issues at hand, the only line and tactic the Democrats seem to have, and repeat constantly ,is whether the country wants 4 more years of the Bush doctrine. This might work for uninformed people but for those who are educated, well informed and well read, it won't work. Why do you thin McCain has the Maverick nickname? Because he beats by his own drum, has crossed party lines, has voted against republican policy, has a mind of his own and wants what's best for the people of this country. There are several issues that I don't agree with him on, but that is true of all candidates. To expect anyone to be in agreement, lock stock and barrel with any of the candidates would be unreasonable.

      • Posted By: Citadelgrrl05 @ 09/21/2008 1:35:02 PM

hiraeh, you are a completel blind stooge the non-partisan office did a study on media bias and positive v. negative stories , guess who had more possitive stories mcbush, it was soemthing like 70% of the stories about obma were negatve..look it up oh wait you probably do n't do research you just go on rhetoric. Just b/c someone is ocvered a lot does not mean what they are sayign about them is positive. Remember with rev. wright what they did, do you think the same thing is going on with sarah baracouda, no..and her psycho witch hunting pastor, there is so much oudble standard, half of the media is conservative I can give you a list on every channel. cnn..campbell brown, wolf blitzer, all of fox, david gregory, andrea mitchell, she is married to the very republican alan greenspan tom brokaw, we can go on and on so spear us your non-facts

  • Posted By: martyks @ 09/21/2008 1:32:42 PM

yeah, right, and Obama is the elitist... Wow! Amazing. And all those vehicles are in his rich (rhymes with rich) 's name... a good ol' boy who's found someone to take care of him in his old age... Hypocrits!

  • Posted By: veisalgia @ 09/21/2008 11:54:10 AM

    WOW,
Dirty little racist trick tying 50 Cent to Our Democratic National nominee.
Just so you know, 50 mostly drives a RR phantom, Bentley, Ferrari and Lamborghini machines. How could a 300 be his FAVORITE?
(Snoop Dog is the big 300 spokesman in the Rap world. Are we interchangeable?)

Harriet Myers drives a Chrysler 300
John Kerry drives one as well.
    Adam West (Batman) drives one.
Audrey Hepburn sold one on ebay.

Why use Gangsta' 50 as a reference with Senator Obama?
What if the Article was about Myers and not Obama? Would you use that reference?

Just last week Fox news went straight from a story on Barack Obama to an OJ Simpson story . They made them share the screen for a few moments....... Disgusting.

i am sooooo tired of this crap...You guys think the American people don't notice..

Maybe they used 50 cent because he, unlike the others you mentioned, is relevent to this day and age. More people are interested in what Fity is doing than Kerry, Myers, West or Hepburn put together. Is that sad, yes, but it's true. Journalist don't play the name game with people who aren't going to get the reader's interest. They use popular folks, like Fity.
