This piece is misleading within itself. Any privatizing of the system ie allowing some to opt out will impact negatively the whole Social Security System by causing benefits cuts of those who remain. Check out this link that deals with the issue extensively.http://www.epi.org/content.cfm/issueguide_socialsecurityprivfaq#30

The original Social Security Act is P.L. 74-271 (49 Stat. 620), approved August 14, 1935. The Social Security Act (SSAct) has been amended significantly since 1935 and never was attended as a long term solution. MCCAIN???s plan allows for continued payment of Social Security and allows for our Young Americans to choose an alternative. What is wrong with that? Why do you feel the Young Adults cannot make a better investment decision than the Federal Government? Why not give them a choice. Why are you not managing your retirement?

Obama will say anything to get a vote and the American people are the ones who look stupid because they are believing what he says and following him to the White House. He is un-consistant, not reliable and can do no better then his democratic lead congress at not doing what is promise. I have no respect for anything or one named Obama or anyone who believes such non-since. I wish him all the non-success a person can ask for and lose the election as well....In lighten tone I wish he go to .................................and stay there

You cannot back up anything you say. The Republicans have lied their way to Power from 1994- to present. Whatever happened to your standard bearer " CHANGING THE TONE IN WASHINGTON ". Fact is he is a LIAR just like your REPUBLICAN LEADERS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE. Oh, by the way, your REPUBLICANS have FILIBUSTERED which they decried when the Democrats used it ,every attempt at any change. JOHN MCCAIN

LIed, wow Obama was in church for 21yrs listening and believing Rev Wright and only quit the church so he could run for office and you telling me he hasn't lied, please. This guys is a loser and a has been who can't even address the claims made by Sinclair which I strongly believe. I know people in the Chicago area some who are connected with a certain male lifestyle who have mention the senator and no one will touch the story, so I think this guys is a complete foney........ Obama is all wrong and will be Black on Sunday, White on Monday and confuse the rest of the time. What a president he will make ..............ha ha

Hey aunkmaa and keeping up: Why is it only 'truth' when it agrees with your point of view?

  • Posted By: AnnieBrum @ 09/20/2008 7:21:08 PM

When is the general public going to wake up and realize Obama will say anything that will make him look good and that HIS plan is always the best. Is he telling the truth? NO NO he isn't but that is usual for him. McCain did not say Social Security would be put in stocks. Anyone born AFTER 1950 would have the option of putting PART of their social security but definitely not all. Besides this was Bush's plan which congress would not even consider. Is there no end to the wild remarks Obama makes. He is a very scary person and I don't trust him at all. Since I am a citizen of the crooked state of Illinois I do know about him. He was not good for Illinois either. He was know as the guy that usually voted "present" rather than comment to anything.

Why do you keep repeating yourself on this board? We can think for ourselves. Please say want you want ONCE and leave it alone.

Dear Dragonfly777. Senator Obama was raised by a single mother who had to rely on food stamps to feed her family. The Senator by work and brains got to Harvard and rose to the financial position he now occupies (a version of the American Dream). I would think that this might qualify Senator Obama to say that he understands what it is like to be poor and have to work hard.

    • Posted By: observer101 @ 09/20/2008 9:02:54 PM

Who cares if Obama was raised poor...Does that mean he has to be President based on those facts?...There are plenty of ppl that are more qualified on the Dem side that could have ran for Pres and was poor at some time in their life...Obamas views are no different than any other Dem candidate...Lie and smile your way in then tax the hell out of Americans and do nothing but bicker about the otherside of the isle...

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you are/where a HILLARY supporter. You sound very :BITTER".

  • Posted By: thinker02 @ 09/20/2008 9:03:34 PM

Obama is full of lies ... and his biggest one yet is when he states that during his Presidency (if the gets there) he will not raise taxes on anyone making less than 250000. Even a kindergartner can figure out that kind of a plan will not help to eliminate the debt that this country has incurred. And just what will he pay for all the social programs that are going to be needed to house, provide health care and education for the 40 million illegal hispanics that are presently in our country. Obama is just saying what ever it takes to get elected.

Funny you noticed that there is debt we have to pay for. You noticed that taxes have to be collected to recover this debt but you jokingly bring the case to Obama. What about McCain, the republicans will not say that a huge part of the problems with our economy stems from the fact that we have been milking a war in Iraq to the tune of 10-12 Billion dollars a month for 7 years. The republicans are acting as if this is not a problem 8 more years no sweat. The problems with our economy has nothing to do with us moving money around to fund the war, no it's Clintons fault, give me a break. Meanwhile they are DISTANCING themselves BUSH...why?

If you want to continue the war for 8 more years why hide it you are WITH BUSH. The money reserves are still being used up in this war and OTHER countries are getting our aid but meanwhile the when the people of the US need the government, our citizens are called drains to society. If companies want their taxes cut, people want their taxes cut, how do walk into Georgia and give 1 billion dollars in aid, WHERE are we getting the money?

      • Posted By: Keepinguponfacts123 @ 09/21/2008 12:01:09 PM

You're actually asking a Republican to think about someone/thing else besides themselves! It is not country first it is ME first and only me.

  • Posted By: annie29 @ 09/21/2008 11:25:31 AM

Prioritize social security just sounds like another ploy by the republicans to control what's ours. Although you have attempted to explain in your words what Bush and McCain meant, I still believe Obama is correct in his assumption. Who can trust Bush or McCain? Stupid Republicans that's who.

This so-called FactCheck is ridiculous. McCain-Palin have been lying every time they open there mouths, to the point where even the MSM can't help but call them liars. Now the guilt-wracked MSM comes after Obama in the guise of "even-handedness.". Baloney. Obama's ad is perfectly proper. McCain wants to privatize social security. If McCain got what he wants, Wall Street would control people's social security money. Period.

Carter, Bush 1.0, Clinton and Bush 2.0 already turned the American economy into socialist one. They imposed on the private banks to give loans to people unable to pay the loans back, via regulation.

Obama is going to turn the economy into full fledged Marxist-Leninist sham, nationalizing most of the market and driving most big companies from the country by imposing insane taxes. You can talk all you want about middle class tax breaks, but if you drive our the large and "greedy" companies, you insure NOBODY will have tax breaks, and everyone will have to work for the goverment for minimum wages.

We'll all be equal. Equally poor. Obama/Lenin 2008!

  • Posted By: mlbuie @ 09/21/2008 4:13:54 AM

Just stop spending Social Security money on anything other than what it is supposed to be for and we have a chance to keep Social Security solvent. If we put this money in privatized investment, they will find a way to leverage that out of our hands.

Can we trust these greedy peddlers with our money? No!

I tell you what: try to buy and sell stocks while the big corps buy and sell; watch their orders move while yours sits around waiting for the plunge. Try buying in while the price continues to rise; the whole thing is rigged against the common man and tilted for the big company and the rich.

You can't win their game. I'd just as soon go play the lottery as trust these crooks. You may win for a while, but it either zeros out or you lose if you stay in. Sounds like the casino to me. Don't bet what you can't afford to lose, and you won't be too disappointed.

It's a rich man's trick to take your future.

  • Posted By: mlbuie @ 09/21/2008 4:02:05 AM

While the precise nature Obama's statement seems admittedly incorrect, the substance of it still remains. Under this plan being peddled by the McCain camp, anyone who follows the privatization scheme is risking their only real safety net on the whims of Wall Street. And we all know how that goes. These people (the Wall Street gamblers and the Republicans) simply want MORE of our money to leverage into more riches for themselves.

When your money is whisked away by these greedy and unscrupulous leaches, the government will NOT rush to your rescue; no bailout for the common man and woman.

The "gotcha" of this FactCheck.org piece may be spectacular, but the unbalanced manner in which it was presented does a supreme injustice to the voter and to those of us who foot the REAL bill in this country.

    Boo! Shame on you!

This "Fact Check" is utterly flawed for the very reason that it does not understand the structure of Social Security at all. Social Security is NOT an investment program, but mostly a "Pay-as-you-go" system, where today's payroll taxes fund today's retirees, with the remainder placed in the Trust Fund. As such, even if no one born before 1958 is privatized, the payroll taxes that they rely upon for their Social Security benefits would be. Passing private accounts would simply open up a large gap in the Social Security system, which would have to be filled by either higher payroll taxes, a rapid diminishing of the Trust Fund, the tapping of general federal revenue at a time of already tremendous deficits, or a cutting of benefits. Factchecking isn't just reprinting White House spin: It involves knowing the facts! Wall Street or no, Private Accounts would involve an utter reshaping of Social Security's entire model that would cause great financial stress to accomplish. Would it be too much for you to REPORT THAT FACT?

"And I'll protect Social Security, while John McCain wants to privatize it. Without Social Security half of elderly women would be living in poverty - half. But if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would've had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week. Millions would've watched as the market tumbled and their nest egg disappeared before their eyes. Millions of families would've been scrambling to figure out how to give their mothers and fathers, their grandmothers and grandfathers, the secure retirement that every American deserves. So I know Senator McCain is talking about a "casino culture" on Wall Street - but the fact is, he's the one who wants to gamble with your life savings."

At no point does Obama refer to the 2005 Bill. He illustrates the folly of McCain's willingness to endanger Social Security for the benefit of Wall Street. He responsibly, and rightly, has us imagine what would have happened if seniors were invested in the Privatized Social Security scheme.

factcheck and the Newsweek need to open their eyes to what most of us were able to easily figure out. Burger King serves better "whoppers"!

  • Posted By: Joe Editor @ 09/21/2008 1:36:01 AM

Keep in mind that Bush's plan was to allow about a third of Social Security contributions to go into private accounts. Since Bush made that proposal in February 2005, the stock market has moved up and down and it's back exactly where it was. No one would have lost a penny. Beyond that, those private accounts would be worth up to $700 billion by now. Instead, every penny that we workers have put into Social Security is gone. Some of the workers' Social Security taxes went to pay for the Social Security of retirees. The rest of the workers' Social Security taxes went to pay for everything else the federal government does. In other words, of the money we workers have been paying for our Social Security, there's nothing there for our Social Security. Zero. Bush (and McCain) would have up to $700 billion in stocks and bonds in our accounts. Instead, we have zero. Thanks, Democrats.

It's about time Obama told some half/truths. You can't win a debate when your opponent can lie with impunity and you have pledged to tell the truth.

    • Posted By: dragonfly777 @ 09/20/2008 8:30:35 PM

What!! The Messiah lie! How can you ask the "High Road" candidate to lie or tell half truthf. What happened to "The Change"? So now he can lie that he is behind.? Obama is a child of the corrupt Chicago political machine,,he definately knows how to lie and manipulate. Now the real question. What do we really know about this guy? The papers have never smeared him like Palin, checked his background, checked his past. VERY FISHY. The truth is no one really knows anything about Obama. He keeps it all quite. How?

If McCain would stop reinventing himself, maybe we can check him out. too

It's not a half truth, it is an honest error.
SO the money was not your grandmother's, but your own. If you are under 57
The concept still is stupid, to put SECURITY money in the market where unscrupulous people can abscond with it.

Just, exactly, how is John McCain collecting Social Security?
