"I guess his mothers food stamps go a ling way. How about fact check looking into this? I would at least like to know which state his mother applied with, because I have got to move there." dragonfly

    Dragonfly

Please do not show your ignorance. Senator Obama's mother died of ovarian cancer in 1995. She received food stamps as a single mom in the 1960's after her husband abandoned them. Senator Obama was not able to pay off his student loans until only recently when his books became best sellers. The books also paid for his one house in Hyde Park, Illinois.. He worked for what he has.

Social Security works by having the contributions of those working today pay for those who have retired. Therefore, if current workers were allowed to gamble with a part of their contributions in the stock market wouldn't that not put the Social Security system in jeopardy when the stock market crashes as it has this week.

This is a little off subject, but Obama gave a hell of a sad speech about how his mother was on food stamps and how he can identify with poor working mothers. Hmmm....He is a Harvard Graduate, he lives in a 1.3 million dollar home, he has lots of rich friends and celebs. Michelle makes over $300,000. I guess his mothers food stamps go a ling way. How about fact check looking into this? I would at least like to know which state his mother applied with, because I have got to move there.

McCain wouldn't privatize SS. It would be a privatized volunteer program. Which would be good if it is government back like the FDIC.

Okay, so it wasn't grandma's money that was to be at risk, it was mine!
The point is that Social Security won't be secure if it is in the market.
IOt is stupid and McCain supoprts Bush in the bad idea.
So, Obama made a mistake about the age of the contributors.
    The concept remains the same.

  • Posted By: Mtobias @ 09/20/2008 8:08:55 PM

Oh, so it wasn't grandma's money that would be lost in the market, it would be mine!
The point is that McCain wants to put social security money in an unsecure location so that corporations can have more money to play poor games with. It is hare brained, as in rabbit sized brains.

I give it to the mccain supporters this time, obama has really dropped the ball on this one, and has over exaggerated mccain's stance on Social security. Obama should double check his facts, and be reprimanded. However, before this becomes a blood letting between mccain supporters and obama supporters, we should remember mccain has occastionally over exaggerated facts and statements of Obama. Lipstick and kindergarden education comes to mind. Both canidates should just stick to the issues, stop the smear campaigns, and stop pointing fingers.

If anyone is curious, im just a college student interested in the enviroment of politics right now. Mccain's smear campaign which started with the paris hilton ad, and his many many subsequent ads has made me wonder if he really is out of touch with the people. But if Obama also continues to distort mccain's image, i might just vote for nader

2 Obama advisors were at the heart of the financial meltdown. Franklin Raines and Jim Johnsom were caught scamming Fannie Mae in order to get higher bonuses while they were CEO of Fannie Mae. Obama appointed Jim Johnson to his search committee to fine him a Vice Presidential Candidate. He resigned only after His $ 7 MILLION SWEETHEART DEAL LOW INTERST LOANS FROM COUNTRYWIDE WERE EXPOSED

Franklin Raines? Come on, that's a Whopper of its own.
Oh NOOOOO, Obama said a half-truth-
Give me a break-look at the last 8 years and stop the BS about what people say-
Look at what has been DONE to our Country-Vote for anyone but a Repub.
Even an honorable man like make was backstabbed by his own party.
He,sadly, must suffer for their sins.

Jeff and Harvy - great comments and so true. But then Obama is the Messiah therefore can tell any lies and no one will call him on it. Jeff you are correct - only part of your soc. security could be invested in stocks and then only if you authorized it.

  • Posted By: AnnieBrum @ 09/20/2008 7:32:56 PM

Read the complete article - no picking and choosing what you want. Obama has make more negative ads etc. than McCain. and he doesn't stop either. Oh yeah! he always comes up with - "they are lying" or "they are liars" or "that was taken out of context" or "that is not what I meant". Take your pick but Obama will only say what he wants you to hear and what will benefit him. Evidently you all that keep defending him want socialism, communism & markism here. Krushchev said we would bury ourselves and Obama is sure hastening our death. Better enjoy what freedoms you have now as they will soon be taken from you.

More Obama Deja MOO. I think I've heard this Bull before. This is SOOO typical of Obama. Tell a big enough lie, and tell it often enough and sooner or later people start to believe it. And the way people and newsmen are fawning over Obama and refuse to call him on his lies, its no wonder that Obama gets away with it.

    Look! 1

Here's the REAL reason congress does not want to let everyone migrate all or a portion of their Social Security funds go into private investments: Congress has passed legislation that uses Social Security monies to pay for portions of other social programs.

For example, at the time Social Security was put into place, there was no provision for SSDI or SSI. Regardless of the administration in the White House or in both houses of Congress, they just can't see a large pool of Federal money laying around gathering moss (and interest) without tapping it for something. Of course, once the funds have been earmarked and "we, the people" start tapping them, there is next to zero chance that the programs will be terminated.

I could be incorrect about this, but it has been my presumption that we would not get full access to our entire available funds anyway. We'd only get a small percentage of the whole to invest ourselves.

Just stop your representatives and senators from activating any more programs using funds sitting in the Social Security accounts.

Typical of Obama. Tell one thing today, another thing tomorrow, and even if anyone checks, the outrage never seems to come

Newsweek's article on "Obama's Social Security Whopper": FALSE. Funny that they don't mention until the end of the article, "McCain has voted in favor creating private Social Security accounts in the past." Gee, ya think maybe, just maybe, "if McCain had his way", there'd be a lot of broke seniors today? Obama's statements are TRUE. Too bad his spokesperson didn't do a good job of defending his remarks. Obama is finally giving the Republicans a dose of their own medicine, and they obviously don't like the taste.

We already have personal retirement accounts to invest in the Stock Market - they're called 401Ks and IRAs. Leave Social Security alone.
