I think that it is great that some people think abortion is horrible. And yes, people should think about pregnancy everytime they have sex. But, I for one am sick and tired of reading news articles about evil people who abuse, rape, kill or in any way harm a small defenseless child. These are the people who should have had an abortion or probably wanted to but were maybe guilted into not going thru with it. These are the people that are too selfish to give that child up for adoption to a loving family. Every woman can have a baby, every woman is not a mother.

Will a time ever come when an open discussion about Abortion will happen? The rights of a woman is a joke on this issue. Responsibility for your actions is an issue. Relax ladies, I look at the responsibility of men and women. Men tend to explain how condoms are not for them or explain how they will pull out ect. A woman has to deal with what happens. When will men have a pill, never. Because we dont need one, women do. we need one to keep it up. How much emotion do men have after the abortion. But without abortion I may have to take responsibility. Abortion may be a womans choice, Just study how many men see it as their answer also.

I bet that abortions would plummet if abstinence programs were abandoned in favor of safe-sex education. All you other parents can keep believing that your kids won't get frisky until they're married, but I will make sure my children know how to stay safe and not rely on wishful thinking.

Paragraph 2: '... the Supreme Court 'passed' Roe v. Wade" ...? The court doesn't 'pass;' it rules on, or upholds, or overturns. Passing is something a legislative body does. Although, come to think of it ....

    Dear Bearfur,
Reading your histrionic post illustrates to me that some people are unable to see outside their own small box. (no pun intended). My patients are living in poverty, abuse and misery. They frequently decided to have more children into these unstable environments simply because they lack the 400$ to terminate the pregnancy. Really. They rarely give these children up for adoption but these and the kids who end up in the system. I think birth control should be FREE. While no one is ever for abortion, try and think outside your own comfy existance. I am a mother and a health care provider.

To GlobalNomad - Yes, Planned Parenthood tells you about the dangers of all the contraceptives it offers. It gives you verbal counseling and written information, and you must sign that you received and understand all that has been presented to you before you receive any contraceptives. They also offer the Pill and other contraceptives at a greatly reduced price to the people who use their services. Yes, they also do this in regard to STDs. When I was an uninsured student and could not afford to pay full price for my yearly exam, I went to Planned Parenthood. Without access to their services, my ovarian cancer would not have been diagnosed until too late, and I'd be dead.

Bearfur : Love is the law, thank you for your love. Thank you for caring about this issue. Please educate yourself on the current state of affairs for women everywhere. i don't believe we have to live with violence. We can create the world we live in. here's a quote from my most influential spiritual teacher.......

My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Non-violence is the means of realising Him.
    Mohandas Gandhi

Please look into the research on what abortion does to women, please stand for women for the long haul. There was another comment on being raped and then having to carry the baby for 9 months etc. To you again I am so sorry for that on the behalf of the men that care and love women in our world for who they were created to be, cherished. Once again however, it comes down to what is the Preborn or Unborn? It is a humann being and it has rights and should not receive the death sentance for the crime of it's parent or parents. One act of death, destruction, violence and discust does not make another one like it ok. I am sure that Mohandas Gandhi would not advocate the killing of the Preborn regardless of how they were conceived.

Thank you Julie for talking this out without any name calling or anything like that. It shows that you are mature in your ability to think and to discuss rationally. I know it is hard to do sometimes with some, I would never dishonor you by doing that to you. I am passionate about what I stand for but I wish to honor you as a woman and as a human being.

GOD gave every person FREE WILL- GOD must be PRO-CHOICE! It is not our place to judge others. For all of you out there including men who have never been raped... Why doesnt someone bend you over, shove somethin up you a__ and implant a living being. Now for the next nine months you not only have to deal with all the trauma of the rape, but you have to feel a part of that day growing inside you. Now granted some can live with it and love it. But for most all it does is to continue and worsen the trauma for a longer period of time. And if you cant abort then what, give up to someone who may abuse it or molest it? This is no world to bring an unwanted child into. We cant house and feed the people already here.

      Julie
Your very welcome Julie, I really do care and I work with hurting and scared women who need to be treated with respect and honor. I try so very hard to do that not only in my proffesion but also just as a daily way of living. There are a lot of men like me out there, we aren't perfect but we are continuing to educate ourselves about treating women the way they were created to be treated. I have educated myself on the current state of affairs for women everywhere and it is a terrible discredit to humanity and to men. You are right we don't have to live with violence, I agree 100%. I also agree that we can do things to influence the way we live and even to some extent the environment we live in. I also know, from the experience of being molested as a child that there are people in the world, both men and women that cross the boundaries of what is right and wrong and harm others. These acts for most, as in rape and the other things you mentioned, are not their choice. Yes I do believe in love and truly wish the world could live in peace, I really do. I think it will be hard if not impossible to obtain in my life time but perhaps in the future it will. I hope we get to see it together.

I have to point out to you though that abortion is one of the most violent acts known to mankind. Have you ever seen what happens to a baby when it is being aborted in a mother's womb? Do you know what Partial Birth Abortion is? I don't ask you this to make you feel guilty or to judge you, I just want you to know that it is very very very violent and harsh. It is not love in any way shape or form. You see this is the thing that burns me, there are so many women like you in the world that really care about other woman and mankind as a whole. And yet this perception that abortion serves you has really taken hold and you really believe it. It doesn't, it absolutely doesn't. It hurts you and hurts you for years and years to come. It is not over when you get off the table, some women have nightmares for years that they never can get rid of. Many if not most become racked by feelings of guilt, suicidal thoughts, drinking and drug problems, the inability to be around children, the inability to have another child, the list goes on and on. It is not love, it is exploitation to the highest degree.

I cannot wait for men to get their act together. They have not done a very good job in my opinion of running the world. Maybe women should give it a try. I will always encourage women to live for themselves. When they empower themselves they can transcend this life. Our ability to control our fertility is vital to our liberty. Add modesty and chasteness to this, women will run the world. We are the givers of life. I'm tired of reminding men of this. We have what you want and need. If you seek our love and self sacrifice you should earn it. Until then, look to Europe where the government is so desperate to get women pregnant that they pay you to have a baby. When this begins to happen everywhere, we will have a voice. Maybe even equal representation in government!!!

I will agree to outlaw abortion when the state finds a way to stop all rape, incest and sexual abuse. As long as 1 out of 4 women will experience some form of sexual assault in their lifetime, the point is moot.

      Julie
There will never be a time in human history when the things you mention will end. Humans act out in ways that hurt other humans because they are either trying to forget or mend wounds they have suffered at the hands of another human being. There is no excuse for any of the things you have mentioned, they are all terrible and discusting acts. As a child molestation sevivor I know this first hand. My choices right after I was abused were not good ones, however, I was trying to deal with my wounds without the knowledge of just how deeply I had been hurt. Alcohol, drugs, sex, they were all ways to numb my mind and forget what had happened to me. Now after so many years of counseling and help from others that cared enough to spend their time, love and energy to walk me through the process of healing I can see what happened to me, I mean rally happened to me. People hurt others and rape and everything else you mentioned are among those things. On the behalf of all honorable and loving men, accept our apology to you and to all women for the ways we have hurt you, I really mean that. This issue of abortion has to transend all of issues though, and the reason for that is because when conception takes place another human being is created, like you and like me. It then changes everything, you are as a woman the protector of this newly conceived life. It is seperate from you, and yet it depends on you for it's very existance. The destruction of that life is no better than any other crime against women or men of any age existing in any other environment. You are right, I will never be pregnant, however, please don't discredit my sincerity to honor you and other women for that reason alone. I don't have to be relevent to you to speak to you in love, please believe those that want to stand with women for life, not the ones that stand with women to destroy women.

It's easy to vilify women who have worked to change the lives of other women. Rumors about Margaret Sanger and her beliefs are easily contrived, luckily she isn't here to defend herself. What a pointless argument to have. Many minorities lack access to abortion and birth control, which means her 'so called' plan isn't going so well. And since none of the men who commented here will ever be pregnant, their opinion about what I should do with my body is irrelevent to me.

Planned Parenthood provides much more than abortions - their birth control and GYN care care are second to none. With no insurance or under-insurance, they are the only affordable option out there. Cutting into their ability to provide services, under whatever dubious pretext, ends up hurting the very women they are mentionging in this article. Forget about abortion/pregnancy - do you know what it's like to try to find affordable treatment for a UTI when you have no insurance? They do.

Interesting that Planned Parenthood is troubled by abortion in low income and minority communities, as this is what the organization was founded for. Margaret Sanger was a known classist and racist. Just read her "Pivot of Civilization": "The grosser, the more obvious, the undeniably feeble-minded should, indeed, not only be discouraged but prevented from propagating their kind."

Referring to her "Negro Project", she even said "We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out the idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members." . . .Sick and twisted.

I suppose it's good that now they claim not to want to kill these children, but the truth is they are accomplishing Sanger's goal nonetheless.

The tone of this article is hardly objective. Clearly this author thinks abortion is a negative thing. "Somber" numbers, teens are apparently not the ones we need to "worry about." While I think it is a great thing to point out to conservatives that conservative economic and family planning policies lead to and INCREASE in abortions to point out the blasted hypocrisy of the far right, the tone sounds like that of a compassionate nun rather than a journalist or a medical reporter.
