Google doesn't need to dominate the cell phone industry from the start. With it's technology and economic clout they can work on making the 'perfect' cell phone first. And dominate the market next...

If the ALL phone manufacturers would install Flash on their phones which works already -perfectly on most devices including the iPhone (if you hack them) then there would be no need to dominate the market, Adobe would already be the dominant player. I think that Google and Apple are just creating rehotoric that will die off when the press stops covering these types of stories. Wil Ortiz, Editor of ICAMD.org

It is sad to read this kind of fear-mongering in such an established publication; open source does not mean that hackers will have free reign over your data, but the article makes it sound like that.
If this does nothing more than inspire a competitive response from Apple, then WE are the winners.
Apple's "cathedral" is still a selective and elitist empire that could use some competition.

It's obvious that this report is biased, not skeptical. I don't have an iPhone, nor do I care about Google's G1 phone. However, this article reeks of bias. Seems like that is standard for Newsweek, especially in the political arena.

There's really only one problem with the Google phone - it's not an iPhone.

And... the open source "tinkering" may sound fun for Computer Geeks, but what about hacking, identity theft, viruses, etc etc etc... I'd be afraid to talk on it, let alone access my bank websites, or any site with a password.

Ill take TMobile over AT&T any day. When I moved into my house, I attempted to get AT&T phone service unsuccesfully for over 2 months. after sending 3 sets of documents to them to prove that I was indeed who I said I was (at their insistance), they assured me my phone would be on 'in the next few weeks'. Eventually I told them to forget it and Sprint had my phone on in less than a week. at&t is a clunky behemouth and they suit apple well.

I'm all conflicted here, on one hand I hate Apple and on the other hand I loathe Gaggle, yet they both have a phone now and mine is still in development. What is the most powerful CEO on earth to do?
Just let me say that neither this ugly urine colored thing or the iPhone can compete with even the alpha version ZunePhone I carry around everyday! My mother always said, "Sonny, good things comes to he that baits!"
So forget about this stuff, ZunePhone is on the way people! http://fakesteveballmer.blogspot.com

Whatever happened to Newsweek's promise of unbiased reporting?

Whether it is a gloss over supporting Obama and taking swipes at Hillary (Now McCain) Newsweek has become a version of the National Enquirer.

the author makes some good points, but google shouldn't be compared to Microsoft's anticompetitive strategy with IE, after all when has Google ever sold any piece of consumer software? It's has always been free.

    Ditto,

Google will probably regret partnering with T Mobile. Try to find an email address to contact anyone at T Mobile. Their customer service sucks.......

The bigger problem with the G1 is you have to use T-Mobile. Much like you have to use AT&T for the iPhone. Both cell phone services are two of the worst out there and not worth the switch in carriers.

What's with the GIANT collapsible ad at the sign in page? I thought CBS News web site was bad enough with that one. And you complain about Goole and ads?
