a bailout that will surely cost the ordinary taxpayer with no benefit in sight - if this bailout goes forward it must be with some future benefit to the ordinary taxpayer (i'm talking about those of us who pay their bills and honor their debts and live with the financial decisions they have made). This benefit needs to be either a certain tax break or credit or perhaps a way to fund social security and health care!

I agree very much with your comments and while I don't go into some of the factual details (by the way very informative although in some places debatable) I do allude to the same phenomena in my post at xwallstreeters site : http://www.xwallstreeters.com/content/forum-topic/care-explanation/questioning-modus-operandi

Still calling all Republicans? Where have you gone? Funny how Republicans keep winning elections but I can never find them to explain the socialist policies of Bush and McCain. Come out come out like Republican gay rep Foley and a gay Idaho Senator! Come out of the closet you Republicans. Not one of you can handle the truth.

LET THE FREE MARKET RUN ITS COURSE. NO BAILOUT. WHAT WILL WE LOSE ? ALL WE HAVE FROM THEM IS DEBTS. WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING ANYWAY. THEY WILL LOSE ALL OF THEIR ILL GOTTEN PROFITS AND HOPEFULLY, THE REST OF THEIR DAYS IN PRISON. NOT SUCH A BAD DEAL. NO BAILOUT.

Perhaps I am stating the obvious, but I will take that risk.

Wall Street is, and has always been nothing more than a glorified Ponzi scheme. As long as the game continues to find suckers to pump in more cash, everyone feels like a winner, but inevitably the game runs out of fools, and collapses.

Let???s face the truth; the supposed best and brightest among us have ALWAYS betrayed the masses. The accumulation of wealth through the trading of paper is not a win - win game, it is a win - lose game.

When all one is doing is redistributing wealth rather than producing it, there will always be big winners and big losers, and the system can self regulate by collapsing, but introduce more currency and the con can continue. America has been played for a fool, having been convinced that wealth materializes from thin air. As a result we have lived well beyond our means.

Let the façade come down now regardless of cost, so America can once again become a leading manufacturer of actual goods and legitimate services that will give us a stronger production capacity and a fighting chance in the war this absurdity will inevitably bring.

Does anybody want to barter 50 million in collateralized debt obligations for a box of 9mm ammunition and some dehydrated wheat?

      Good William,
I'm right with you. You may not agree with me, but since we little stupid people who play by the rules don't have a chance in hell of owning a damn thing, why not have a REVOLUTION ? NO BAILOUT. We can live through the resulting depression. JUST insist on financial reform eliminating predatory financial activity including limiting the now 29.99% interest rates on credit cards as an example. LET THEM CHOKE ON THEIR OWN GREED IN PRISON. We may have no money, but we will be free, including free of the criminal, at least in our generation or two.

We regulate free transportation rights by posting reasonable speed limits on our roads. So get rid of posted speed limits to be rid of 'big government'? Getting rid of ALL financial regulation as unneccessary 'big government' simply invites predatory behavior. DUH.... Oh, of course, unless your have your 1/2 or one million dollars or more to invest. Then there is no such thing as 'predatory' financial practices, just free market profits. Its all relative right ??? I guess that's why Thomas Jefferson said wisely, 'sometimes revolution is a GOOD THING." Then it can be relative when we little people stomp the crap out of you ass holes.

I have not heard any mention in discussions re the bailout as to who will pay the interest on the 700 billion. The 700 billion will not be in the US budget but the interest will be and I would guess it would be in the neighborhood of 30 billion. I think this is an important issue.

  • Posted By: OLDFOOL @ 09/24/2008 4:41:18 PM

Everyone's to blame. Living and profiting on debt: the new modern way. No rescue is the solution. No bailout. Let market forces cull the weak and bring about real and acclurate market values. Even with a 50% drop in home value, the homeowners are still making a huge profit, if purchased before 2000 or even 2003. I would like to see home prices drop 100%, too realistic values, so average Joe Shmow could have a chance in hell of owning a home free and clear in his lifetime. Let them die. And how about predatory lending of school loans. Wachovia and the other shisters buy money from the fed for 1 or 2% interest and sell student loans to the young for 8 and 9%.. Can you spell predatory or institutional debtor / slavery? I say let them all rot, even if we must go through a depression. What to do now ? Outlaw predatory financial practice and actually prosecute white collar criminals. Oh, I forgot, did anyone mention the 29.999% interest rates on credit cards ? LET THEM DIE. Just as we once hung criminals on Sunday as a spectacle, we should put them ALL IN PRISON FOR DECADES. We will pay for their excess and greed, but they will pay MORE. THAT WOULD BE JUSTICE.

I have savings and investments and stand to lose. My debt is a mortgage, fixed/30 that I am paying down early. The mortgage is well under 30% of my monthly take home. The old school numbers worked for me, and likely have for you too. What I want to know is who amongst these top fat-cats that set this up will go down? As for punishments, the little people are being steam-rolled in forclosure for their bad acts. I saw that Scott Petersons bar-fly lost her 600k mortgage out in California. Ok, so she lost the house and the market corrected that mistake. Where is that hidden-hand stuff for the executives, sales and others who created all of this crazy paper...
I would love to see the fat cats get a perp walk to Gitmo.

I'm certainly not a Republican and wish George Bush and his cadre of idiot advisers had never been sent to Washington, but let's be reasonable, not all Republican voters are racist.

I agree that not all Republicans are racist (although a lot are racist) is because they have no significant minority constituents. Witness the sea of white faces at their convention. Also it is hard to come up with an alternate reason why anyone would vote for McCain. Here we have in Obama an extremely intelligent person of mixed racial background with the ability to bridge cultures that we have never had in a president. In addition, he has just enough Washington experience so that he has not forgotten his roots but yet gives him enough experience to not be taken advantage of as opposed to McCain who has been part of the Washington establishment for 30 years or Palin who is a neophyte. McCain has embraced all of George Bushes policies that made him so unpopular. In addition McCain is a well know womanizer who ditched his first wife for money and even admits it was a mistake. He is not conservative, in fact he endorses the current socialist takeover of the financial sector and he is ignorant on foreign policy such that he doesn't know Sunni from Shiite or Spain from Latin America and is confrontationally belligerent with a well know poorly controlled temper that led even his colleages to hate him. Despite a weak field, Republicans did everything they could to avoid nominating him. McCain poorly managed his campaign and there is no evidence that he would run the country any better. Given all this many people conclude that racism must be responsible. Personally, I suspect more just sheer ignorance.

        • Posted By: ononotagain @ 09/24/2008 3:46:22 PM

Maybe they're not racist; maybe just ignorant. Both my mother and grandmother are/were Rep and both have always referred to blacks as ni**ers and Spanish/Latino as spi*s.

    • Posted By: OLDFOOL @ 09/24/2008 4:48:15 PM

Probably I have no standing to apologize in your eyes. You see I'm one of those scumbag emotionally disturbed Vietnam Vets who should be in prison for war atrocities. Funny, apologizing to you is not what comes to my mind.

    • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 09/24/2008 2:10:51 PM

Well stated Andrea. McCain says himself that this bailout will cost American families $10,000 dollars each at least yet we did not hear a peep from him as late as this March when Henry Paulson said our financial institutions were sound. In fact McCain said as recently as last week that the fundamentals of our economy are sound. McCain is out of touch with this country. How is he going to have the insight to anticipate attacks from other countries when he doesn't even understand what is going on right underneath his nose in this country? He doesn't know the difference between Spain and Latin America or Shiite and Sunni. He doesn't even know how to use a computer. He endorse Bush's socialist bailout of the financial idiots who got us into this mess. McCain is not conservative, he is not liberal, he is not even politically savy. He is an idiot and a puppet. Shame on anyone who votes for McCain.

"May", schmay. Rather than blathering on about Nixonian wage-price controls, etc, can the writer state what he would DO if he were the Treasury Secretary he chooses to malign. I suspect not since ivory tower musings from afar pay the mortgage and remain risk free.

  • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 09/24/2008 4:40:42 PM

Fred Norris has a point; however, his synopsis of events doesn't tell the whole story. When a well-educated, articulate professional agent deals with a person of much more modest education and communications skill, especially over complex loan application forms, it isn't on equal terms. This was frequently the case with loan officers involved in the "sub-prime" lending schemes that were at the heart of the present crisis...loans specifically made to people of limited means. There is such a thing as "fiduciary duty", or there used to be. This isn't just a case of regulation or non-regulation, either, but of visiting the consequences of bad economic decisions or advice upon those who are most responsible for them... and in this case, that group of highly culpable people includes many executives, who knew the wheels would eventually come off, but were not concerned, because they knew their golden parachutes would waft them off to safety, and others would be left holding the bag. It will not be easy to identify the people responsible for irresponsible decisions, and deny them, individually, from profitting from those errors of judgment or morals.

Come on dems! Put country first for a change. Only reason you're opposed to passing a bill is because you want to draw the crisis out so you can win the election. You could care less about our country.

Calling all Republicans! I can't get anyone to answer. Tell me why Bush's plan is not socialism on a massive scale! He admitted that he was going to circumvent the hand of the free market. This bailout to the tune of almost a trillion dollars plus his massive expansive of Medicare make him the biggest socialism and expander of government since Nixon. Speak up you cowardly Republicans! Call a spade a spade. You are socialists if you support Bush like McCain supports him! I can't hear you.

    • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 09/24/2008 4:30:45 PM

You idiot. Elections are how power changes hands in a democracy and change gets made. We Democrats have to worry about elections because we cannot just takeover by Supreme Court mandate like Bush did in 2000 despite Gore getting the majority of votes. Take your fascist brand of nationalism somewhere else!

Nice of Warren Buffet to warn us about the financial crisis is "...another Pearl Harbor." To show you how synical I've become (along with most Americans): how come the man who just invested his own personal money to help one of the "finest banks in the world" is worried about how fast we need to act. Perhaps it's BECAUSE he just invested in that bank -- I'm SURE a good deal or he wouldn't have done it. Incidentally, it's one of the investment banks that the government is going to help out with the $700 billion of taxpayers money! And it's just an odd coincidence that it is the bank who spawned Mr. Speed Demon, Henry Paulson! I for one would rather go down than pass something that makes a bigger fool of us than we've already been seen to be by the hogs on Wall St. Rage? Ya, you bet!

This is boiling down to the American tax payer wants to let the FREE market play out. If it wipes out $5,000,000,000 of Buffet's riches...who gives a sh*t? If Paulson???s buddies at Goldman Suchs don't get $24 million bonuses, WE DON'T CARE!

The rich muckity mucks want US to guarantee them future profits. They want US to guarantee they get to stay rich (at our expense).

They can try all they want to convince us that the sky will fall; it???s not going to scare the American wage slave. Let the cards fall where they may. Live by the sword, die by the sword you greedy bastards. We wage slaves don't need million dollar loans to get by day to day. If your den of thieves (Wall Street) collapses we will feel justice is done!

If every wage slave family in America gets stuck with a $10k tax liability bailing out these evil chumps I'm gonna invest in some torches!

Just another example of the pernicious pessimism of the press feeding the negativity of the average Americans! With the 24/7 drumbeat of talking heads that the economy is in a freefall recession???which is not true???how can the consumer maintain confidence in a financial system that is not readily understood. We are in a crisis of confidence; the trust needed for the smooth operation of functioning markets is not rebuilt by persistent predictions of apocalyptic scenarios. The regulators and Congress were grossly negligent to let greed, both on the part of Wall Street and Main Street, get out of balance with common sense

I thought the economy was drunk and had a hangover. I think BUSH was drunk for the past 7 years, and HE had a hang over that didn't want to deal with this. Or he hoped to be out of office when the shoe dropped. Either way, Republicans who wanted less government involvement with the financial system are to blame. I won't vote Republican again as long as any of the incumbents from 1999 who voted on the Phil Gramm bill, are OUT OF OFFICE and face legal recourse for their part in this mess. I would like to see them pay back the tax payer for every dollar they made in office.

  • Posted By: shing @ 09/24/2008 4:10:24 PM

I have many objections to the Paulson plan. Firstly it seems to be purposefully designed to make it very difficult to be passed by both sides of Congress. A clause for no oversight, nothing about trying to help homeowners, nothing about how the securities will be priced etc. It looks like Bush is giving such as bad proposal to Congress that he knows will not be passed and then he can pass the blame to Congress for not dealing with the mess hes has gotten the country into.

THE ONLY REASON THEY WANT TO PUSH THIS AS A CRISIS...........SO OUR ILLUSTRIOUS GOVERNMENT CAN PULL THE WOOL OVER OUR EYES JUST LIKE THEY DID FOR IRAQ!!!!!
THEY WANT NO RESTRICTIONS, FULL PACKAGES FOR DEPARTING EXECS, AND NO COLLATERAL OR BONDS FOR OUR TAXPAYER MONEY.
THAT MEANS THAT WE, OUR CHILDREN, OUR GRANDCHILDREN, AND OUR GREAT GRANDCHILDREN WILL BE PAYING FOR THIS THE REST OF OUR/THEIR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT A TRAGEDY, THAT THEY DON'T SEEM TO REALIZE THIS PLOY RIGHT B/4 THE ELECTION WILL ONLY HELP ALL WHO VOTE FOR THIS, THE WAY PAULSON AND BERNAKE WANT IT, WILL BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE COME NOVEMBER AS THIS WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN BY HARD WORKING AMERICANS WHO DO NOT GET FREE BAILOUTS WITH BENEFITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
