This piece is neither competent journalism nor entertainment. "He'll have to come up with a reason why he lied for so long?" Gee, what could it be about the way homosexuals are treated, besides the ridicule, ostracism, and violence they face? Sounds like this report is annoyed with Aiken after sparring his way through an interview and decided to get nasty. There is no room for such childish and petty vindictiveness in journalism, Mr. Setoodeh. If you can't handle the stress of

"..Aiken shouldn't have been scared of letting his Claymates down.." What color is the sky in your world? The world the rest of us inhabit has homophobes who kill people just because they are gay. That anyone is brave enough to "come out" in a society that is still largely hostile to the gay community should be celebrated not dismissed as "overdue". Are you as ignorant as this article implies or just jealous you didn't get the scoop?

This priss tormented autistics with remedial deportment lessons: no escape.

I don't care if he's gay or not, but I do care that he made such fools out of his fans. We defended and supported him through so many scandals and now we find out that we were being played. How many of those scandals were true? Who knows?!? He used us. So stamp IDIOT on my forehead and stick a fork in me 'cause I'm done...and look on ebay soon for some great Clay Aiken stuff -- super cheap.

So, this article taught me Clay Aiken has finally made the very peronal, very brave decision to be open about his sexuality openly so that his son wouldn't be raised with a lie. It also taught me that Ramin Setoodeh is kind of a dick.

    It???s a squirrel! It???s a nut! No, it???s BibleBoy!
(A monosybalic dimwit, pitifully parroting the words of his conveniently invisible ???authority figure??? ???The Lord Jesus Christ.)
??????.their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator???who is forever praised. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.??? Romans 1:21-27

It make me sad to know that Clay is homosexual. People don't like to admit it but homosexuality is a perversion. It's a mental and spiritual illness. I don't hate homosexuals, but I hate the perversion just as God hates perversion/sins. God loves the person, but hates the sin. Sin is a destructive spiritual element of humanity. I pray for people who are in perversion that God will set them free.

    • Posted By: washchadblip @ 09/24/2008 10:05:58 PM

marialouisa48, you're the pervert. You obsess about other people's crotches. You're sick, sick, sick. Pray. Maybe God will set you free from your perversion.

    • Posted By: ChickOfTheSea @ 09/24/2008 9:03:17 PM

Excuse me? Homosexuality is an illness? I am not even gay and I think that is the most pathetic thing I've read in a long time. I think people who judge other people are guilty of as much a perversion as you think gays are guilty of, and are acting and thinking in direct opposition to the non-judgmental position of Jesus Christ. You need to pray all right - for yourself. Meanwhile, the tone of this piece is regrettable. The author should be ashamed and I can't believe Newsweek allowed such a weak excuse for journalism escape the editors red pen.

His reason for not coming out sooner is all over the People article, which you obviously haven't read (or ignored) & I'm sure will be expanded upon in the 2-part interview he's doing with GMA the next couple of days. It was long, hard road for such a sweet, Christian kid. If you got him on a bad day, your holier than thou attitude explains it.

"Too little, too late" is a bizarrely inappropriate cliche to apply to this situation. Too little for what? Too late for what? Would his announcement have saved the world from some kind of impending disaster? Should he have hired a PR firm to draft elaborate press releases and host a grand coming-out party to compensate for his "late"-ness?

This article reeks of laziness of thought. What is this new demographic of "conservative, panty-tossing Claymates"? Are you really using your attempted joke at American Idol's "gayness" as one of your arguments? You're entitled to your dislike of Clay Aiken, but it doesn't warrant a poorly reasoned rant on Newsweek.com.

  • Posted By: homefair @ 09/24/2008 8:01:59 PM

Wow, aren't you just so proud of yourself. Taking a beautiful, freeing, loving gift that Clay has given to his son & trying desperately to make it ugly. Grudges are very unattractive.... & unprofessional. You were rude & snide in that interview, & once again, you've proven why Clay did not like talking to you when he's had such great interviews with others. You've also gotten many facts wrong (the Ripa remark was on a Friday, she ranted about the incident on Monday, Rosie talked about it on Tuesday .... there was never any video, etc.). And if you really read the article, it was clear that Clay was more afraid of losing his mother, brother & others in his very conservative Christian family members. You did not walk his walk. There is not a gay person on earth who will not tell you that coming out to family, friends & co-workers is the most difficult decision & often very long process on earth. You did not walk his walk. What will you teach your children about vindictiveness & being judgemental?

Ramin Setoodeh your bit here just smells of pissiness that Aiken didn't give YOU the exclusive scoop instead of people. It's pretty clear you're more mad about that than whether or not Aiken came out in a manner you deemed appropriate.

And you're just plain ignorant to pretend that all would be just peachy keen if Aiken had come out years ago. Gay people, private or public, face irrational hatred for all walks of life (don't believe me -- check the message boards on any entertainment site when any story regarding a gay person is posted and see the bile spewed by ignorant hicks) While we have made great strides, we're not there yet on the whole treat others compassionately thing (as clearly indicated by the tone of your own writing) Would it have been nice if Aiken or other gay celebs come out earlier? Well duh. Of course it would have. But given the amount of retribution heaped upon those who do come out (such as you saw fit to do here) it's no wonder many are still
    reluctant to do so.

It is true that coming out is the best way to live free, but to slam someone else because they didn't make that choice according to YOUR timetable is just arrogant on your part.

Everyone has the right to their own sexuality and what they say about it publiicly. Give me a break, why should Clay Aiken be critiicized for deciding when he is comfortable talking about something as personal as his orientation? And sorry, I don't think it is anyone's business.

This article is ridiculous! I don't know much about Clay Aiken but his decision to keep his private life private shouldn't be frowned upon. Why is Setoodeh so concerned about all this? Is it anyone's business to know about others' sexuality? Should I all of a sudden announce at work, church, grocery store, hospital, etc. etc. that I'm gay? He could have kept it private all his life; it's his right. He doesn't owe you anything. He didn't lie.

I see one big stereotype in your rather bitter article: that Clay's fans are all conservative. I'm not sure where that came from, but it's very much a media creation and very much "old school." I'm a fan. Yes, I'm middle aged (the horror!). I'm an Obama supporter. I am pro-choice. I'm not religious. I'm also pretty typical. Women my age came of age in the sixties and seventies. We're not who you apparently think we are.

As for "why" Clay "lied," ask any gay person struggling with when, how, or if to come out. It's not easy.

I think you're just ticked you didn't get a scoop.

Aiken "confesses what the rest of the country has suspected." Tell me, are we talking about homosexuality or a bank robbery? One "acknowledges" being gay.
