Let's face it: America is in decline, mostly because people look to celebrities for sage advice on how to live their lives and how to vote. Most of these celebrities barely finished high school, have little or no critical thinking skills, and have little to do with real, everyday life. Yet, they feel that they're somehow qualified to give analyses of political matters, foreign policy, and economic policy.

"Let's face it there are many white Americans of this generation and past generations whose only true interactions with black Americans is through a television screen and 9 times out of 10 the images that are shown are negative." Really? Where do you live that you don't have an opportunity to have multi-cultural interactions?? Sounds like you really need to get out of the house and away from the television with a statement like that. Also did you really just say the image of the black man will go from a "rap" artist...really?? That is an ignorant statement and you should really get off the farm and hanging out with different people than your daddy/uncle and your sister/cousin. It is pretty obvious that you don't have a clue of the real world.

Let's face it there are many white Americans of this generation and past generations whose only true interactions with black Americans is through a television screen and 9 times out of 10 the images that are shown are negative. Barack Obama and his family have the potential to change that image if he is elected president. On Jan 20, 2009 he could potentially show every young black American boy that is born into this country...you can make it to the top. The image of the black man will go from a "rap" artist to "an ivy league educated president." I think many male rap artists know that this change is worth more than any amount of money the music industry can toss their way and maybe they will start to change the content of the lyrics.

"Far from being politically alienated and bling-obsessed, the rap generation may be just months away from occupying the White House."

How is this statement racist towards African Americans? Where in there article were African Americans specifically called out?

I guess if you believe that ONLY African Americans can/do like Hip-Hop that might be true... But the Hip-Hop/Rap culture is not limited to ONLY African Americans... I'm a white female that thoroughly enjoys Hip-Hop/Rap.... Should I be offended too?

Aside from that misunderstanding... What's sooo wrong with a president being 'with the times' and sharing the same intersts as the the younger newly voting generation? I think it's awesome that there may potentially be president that may be able to relate to people in there early 20's and up through their 30's. They are the future, what is done today will most effect them and their children tomorrow, so why not put someone in the White House that will look out for their best interest and the best interest of the countries future???

All the stereotypes and hate in these comments really show the sad shape this country is in. Do we really expect more of politicians when the majority of the population can't even seem to have a civilzed discussion?

  • Posted By: Human Race @ 09/28/2008 5:21:30 AM

I find your article to be very, very, offensive. It is as if "white America" looks at all thins "African-American" and immediately connects it to Senator Barack Obama. You make me want to throw up. I, an African-American female never allowed rap music to be played in my home. Never insult us again by attempting to place all of us into "one" category. Just as there are elements of white "society" that are more negative and offensive than African-Americans could ever be, you will never own. The corporate media doesn't allow these types to dominate the air waves. Get off your high moral horse. When you live in a "glass house", you are not qualified to throw "stones". I hope your hatred and bigotry does not eat you up alive. One thing about life that remains forever true; "we all know where we have been, we don't know where we're going". And in addition to that, you never know who you might need before you leave this place; it may just be one of those African-Americans passing by when you are chocking to death who saves your life. Read another history book. I accept your apology.

First of all, I was referring to 'Rappers" image of themselves..Not all blacks are stupid and not all whites are stupid...I do apologize if my comment offended you (if Im who you were directing your comment to)..But it was not intended as all blacks are that way...Only for the idiots that praise that lifestyle and "art", no matter the race...Secondly point me to a REAL glass house and I'll make sure not to cast stones;)

Your premise is questionable. Obama likes Jay-Z. So what? I saw Terms of Endearment and liked it. That doesn't mean I believe in past lives, as does Shirley MacLaine. Why not talk about the principles Obama publicly identifies himself with, instead of drawing speculative parallels?

  • Posted By: Uppity Negress @ 09/28/2008 11:04:24 AM

Obama is not hip-hop. He simply is concilliatory to the Hip-Hop self-identified generation because he needs their support. In no way is he a member and this article is faulty.

Also trying to connote that the so-called artists of the Hip-Hop Generation are impacting outcomes significant in this race, that is faulty too. Most young Blacks and Hispanics of this demographic are not registered voters or civically charged. They don't know policy. All that is really happening is a desperation for relevancy. Those artists were left out and not needed in the ways the Kerry and Gore campaigns utilized them. These so-called artists put themselves out there to speak for Obama --- Obama did not ask them to speak for him.

I'm not even an Obama supporter (and definitely not of McCain) but I know how this went down. Clearly when looking at the policy engagement and interests of Barack, it has nothing to do with the culture of hip-hop. It does not translate in a friendly sustaining way. Obama is more about the transformation of Hip-Hop, if he could nad had the time and interest, which would make most of these same people trying to connect to him for their own selfish need for continued relevancy realize that their times' up.

None of the references in this article are truly political and they can't articulate the policy framework of Obama. Obama knows it. So many know it. They just can't tell those that want to help them that they are obsolete. They rather accept the help because in all actuality, Obama would rather be a positive influence in some way to get them to innovate and challenge themselves to grow. But clearly, the hip-hop generation boasting Obama is trying their hardest to claim him so that when and if he wins, he will not negate them for which they innately know he will.

I am Black and I know how we try to claim people that want nothing to do with us in the relationships we want to have with them. I think Obama could be engaged in Hip-Hop as a demographic if it was not so static and regressive. Just because they are self-proclaimed in supporting him, it does not mean they are where he is and his policy advisement team is.

Besides the racists comments here, I have to agree unfortunately with what some of the racists here are saying. They make some valid points against the framework of this article. This article is embarrassing to read coming from a PH.D. Candidate. It's very elementary and banal. Stop trying to marry the myth that Obama is Hip-Hop and that the so-called generation are artists and are politically erudite. It's a lie.

Who could possibly care what a bunch of crack-smoking, fresh-out-of-jail-and-on-parole hip-hop artists have to say about anything anyway?

    • Posted By: observer101 @ 09/27/2008 6:19:20 PM

Artists?...Ha ha ha...Hip Hop is not art in the least...Its rhetoric, misleading info about todays black Americans...They flaunt money they cant count, treat women that wouldnt givem the time of day without said money like crap, and they flaunt guns that they can only kill innocent ppl with because they are to busy running for their lives to aim it. Ever see one of those fools on t.v. shooting?...They are busy flailing their arms around hiding behind cars or bounding around corners while firing..Their limp wrists barely control a .22 as it bucks wildly in their hand. A .22!...Acting all hardcore and showing off weapons they cant even aim or pronounce correctly is a joke....So calling "hip hop" art?..Might as well call Beethoven or Mozart a rapper.

  • Posted By: observer101 @ 09/25/2008 10:20:16 PM

To say that "hip hop" doesnt have a negative effect on todays youth is stupid...The c"rap" music has always endorsed killing rivals, drugs, drinking and degrading women..All that counts is what you have and how much you made to get it...This music and the movies that are made nowadays IS corrupting..Sex, violence and money...Whats a kid to think beside "This is what I gotta do"...Just look at some of the "reality" shows...NEXT, BIG BROTHER, HILTONS BFF, I WANNA WORK FOR poop DOODY< the stupid stuff these young ppl do for what?...Nothing! but maybe 5 minutes of fame, and maybe a reunion show...Using these "great actors" and wannabe crazy killers from the hood as spokes persons for a candidate is ignorant...

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 09/26/2008 8:15:02 AM

Ok so what about rock music that talks about death and violence? What about the video games? I don't buy into the whole idea. A person acts how they want to act, regardless of what music they listen to.

      • Posted By: observer101 @ 09/27/2008 5:58:14 PM

ANY music genere has the capabilities of warping a young mind....Ppl imply "hip hop" DOESNT have that capability..

    To Jimbo:
Actually, blacks make up a high percentage of prisoners jailed for possession of controlled substances. We are not incarcerated at the same rate for more heinous crimes. But we could race-bait all we want (which has nothing to do with this article). Next time, read the article and provide some relevant commentary before YOU become a stereotype yourself- a racist with unfounded rhetoric.

    • Posted By: jimbo3800 @ 09/26/2008 8:03:28 PM

And exactly what did I say that is racist? Answer. nothing, it is just the standard accusation of the left-wing and their apologists - who are all over this page tonight.

They (Obamabots) are all up on the readings of Saul Alinsky, Jimbo. They cant help themselves. LOL. Obama was a deciple of Saul Alinsky and his organizing practices which included much intimidation (e.g. use of race concsious comments) and ridicule:

        Obamas Radical Roots And Rules
By INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Thursday, August 14, 2008 4:20 PM PT
        Part 1 of 3

Election '08: Most Americans REVILE SOCIALISM, yet Barack Obamas poll numbers remain competitive. One explanation: He is a longtime disciple of a man (Saul Alinsky) whose mission was to TEACH RADICALS TO DISGUISE THEIR IDEOLOGY.

The Democratic presidential nominees choice of the word CHANGE as his campaigns central slogan is not the product of focus-group studies, or the brainstorming sessions of his political consultants.

One of Obamas main inspirations, SAUL ALINSKY, was a man dedicated to revolutionary change that he was convinced must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward CHANGE AMONG THE MASS OF OUR PEOPLE. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are WILLING TO LET GO OF THE PAST AND CHANGE THE FUTURE.

Saul Alinsky, circa 1946: Like Obama, he wanted CHANGE. Sen. Obama was TRAINED by Chicagos INDUSTRIAL AREAS FOUNDATION, founded in 1940 by the RADICAL ORGANIZER SAUL ALINSKY. In the 1980s, Obama spent years as director of the Developing Communities Project (DCP), which operated USING ALINSKYS STRATEGIES, and was involved with two other Alinsky-oriented entities, ACORN and PROJECT VOTE.

On the OBAMA CAMPAIGN WEB SITE can be found a PHOTO of him teaching in a University of Chicago classroom with POWER ANALYSIS AND RELATIONSHIPS BUILT ON SELF INTEREST written on the blackboard ??? key terms utilized in the Alinsky method.

The far-left Alinsky had no time for liberalism or liberals, declaring that a liberal is (someone) who puts his foot down firmly on thin air. He WANTED NOTHING LESS THAN TRANSFORMATIONAL RADICALISM. America was begun by its radicals, he wrote. America was built by its radicals. The hope and future of America lies with its radicals. And so, This is the job for todays radical . . . to FAN THE EMBERS OF HOPELESSNESS INTO A FLAME TO FIGHT. TO SAY, . . . LET US CHANGE IT TOGETHER!

ALINSKY STUDENTS ranged from militant Indians to Chicanos to Puerto Ricans to blacks from all parts of the black power spectrum, from PANTHERS TO RADICAL

(Continued from my post above - Part 2 of 3 - Obamas Radical Roots And Rules)

PHILOSOPHERS, from a variety of campus activists, S.D.S. and others, to a priest who was joining a revolutionary party in South America.

CAPITALISM always was considered the ENEMY. Americas corporations are a spiritual slum, he wrote, and their arrogance is the major threat to our future as a free society. Is it surprising that an ALINSKY DISCIPLE SUCH AS OBAMA can promise so blithely to increase taxes on CEOs?

Obama calls his years as an ALINSKYESQUE COMMUNITY ORGANIZER in Chicago THE BEST EDUCATION I ever had, and where I learned the true meaning of my Christian faith. But as radicalism expert Richard Lawrence Poe has noted, CAMOUFLAGE is key to ALINSKY-STYLE ORGANIZING. In organizing coalitions of black churches in Chicago, Obama caught flak for not attending church himself. He became an instant churchgoer.

Indeed, Alinsky believed in SACRIFICING ETHICS AND MORALS FOR THE GREAT CAUSE. Ethical standards must be elastic to stretch with the times, Alinsky wrote in his last book, Rules for Radicals, adding that ALL VALUES ARE RELATIVE IN A WORLD OF POLITICAL RELATIVITY.

Published a year before Alinskys death in 1972, Rules for Radicals includes a dedication in which he gives an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical . . . who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom . . . Lucifer.

Alinskys writings even explain what often seems like OBAMAS OVERSIZED EGO. In New Hampshire in January, for example, the senator told an audience that A BEAM OF LIGHT WILL COME DOWN UPON YOU, YOU WILL EXPERIENCE AN EPIPHANY . . . and you will suddenly realize that YOU MUST GO TO THE POLLS and VOTE FOR OBAMA.

It was a bizarre spectacle, but consider that ALINSKY BELIEVED that anyone who is working against the haves is always facing odds, and in many cases heavy odds. If he or she does not have that complete self-confidence (or call it ego) that he can win, then the battle is lost before it is even begun.

(Continued from my post above - Part 3 of 3 - Obamas Radical Roots And Rules)

According to Alinsky, Ego must be so all-pervading that the PERSONALITY of the organizer is CONTAGIOUS, that it converts the people from despair to defiance, creating a mass ego.

Alinsky also readily admitted that he did not trust the people themselves. It is the schizophrenia of a free society that we outwardly espouse faith in the people but inwardly have strong doubts whether the people can be trusted, he wrote. Seeking some meaning in life, the MIDDLE CLASS, according to Alinsky, TURN TO AN EXTREME

CHAUVINISM AND BECOME DEFENDERS OF THE AMERICAN FAITH.

This is evocative of Obamas remark during the primaries that small-town Americans are BITTER and cling to guns or religion.

Obama is also following Alinskys instructions to the hard left for attaining power in America. In the last chapter of Rules for Radicals, titled The Way Ahead, is found this declaration: Activists and radicals, on and off our college campuses . . . people who are committed to change . . . must make a complete turnabout.

Alinsky noted that our rebels have contemptuously rejected the values and way of life of the MIDDLE CLASS. They have stigmatized it as materialistic, decadent, bourgeois, degenerate, imperialistic, war-mongering, brutalized and corrupt.

According to Alinsky, They are right, but he cautioned his comrades that the power and the people are in the big middle-class majority. Therefore, an effective radical activist discards the rhetoric that always says pig in reference to police officers, plus other forms of disguise, to radicalize parts of the middle class.

Obamas RHETORICAL WINDOW-DRESSING is easily recognizable as ALINSKYESQUE CAMOUFLAGE. New annual spending of more than $340 billion, as estimated by the National Taxpayers Union, is merely a wish to recast the safety net woven by FDR and LBJ, as Obama describes it in his writings. The free market is disparaged as a winner-take-all economy. Big tax increases masquerade as restoring fairness to the economy.

Barack Obamas CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN is simply SOCIALISM . . . imposed by stratagem because Americans have never believed in Marxist economics. Saul Alinsky understood this, and his ghost is alive and well. . . and threatening to haunt the White House.

The hip hop generation? What is that? This swill has been around for 30 years and only degenerates further as time goes on. That Obama is a Jay-Z fan is precisely why he is going to lose the election. This pseudomusic is first and foremost stuffed down the country's throats by the MSM who see it as a way to undermine American culture which is their goal. The MSM should be held criminally responsible, along with Hollywood for giving a generation of kids the idea that its cool to be a stupid, violent thug. Shame on all of you America haters.

Barack Obama is not the next Hip Hop President. This is highly offensive. Barack Obama does not speak for one segment of America, but for all Americans and this label could and will be used against him to scare away potential voters. The subtitle of this story is ridiculous and divisive. UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL.

Because listening to hip-hop or to an actor or to a late night host does not preclude intelligence in the least.

There will be those who disagree, they have a right to their opinions. I have a right to mine as well, which is that people who judge based on a style of music or an entertainment preference are bigoted losers.

I listen to hip-hop and sometimes watch the Colbert Report.

I can also do calculus, have read Twain and Faulkner and Hemingway, can write entire computer programs by myself, am fluent in two languages, and took a course on international security from former Secretary of Defense William Perry in college.

Does it seem to you that maybe your stereotypes are out of line with reality?
