At a fundraiser in New York City in July, Powell said, "The time is now to take back our communities!

I thought they have control over their communities? They control the crime, the guns, the drug sales, the prisons. What they don't seem to have control over is their own actions.

      Sportie,

      Who exactly are "They"?

I think that people should stop criticizing what these artists are doing. They're attempting to endorse voting for an age group that normally doesn't bother to take notice of these issues. Besides, my definition of a "good, solid, and Christian" family has to be completely different than yours. Who has to throw religion into a definition of a family, anyway?

    What a bunch of idiots.

Who in the hell cares what these embacils do???? After rappin about kiiling, gang banging and Drugs...you gotta be kidding, like what does this have anything to do with a good, solid, and Christian family????? Absolutely nothing, jus like the nut jobs in Hollywood,,,,they would be much better to stick to the scripts written for them because they only create havoc for themselves and are boycotted by the main stream voters...Just like Osama....they'd be fine if they are speaking somebody else's thoughts in somebody else's words....It's just hell when they open the goofy mouths without a clue about what is and isn't sanity!!!!

LOL !! will Heavy Metal play a role in this election cycle? i mean if ppl dont care what the actors of Hollywood have to say why do they care what Rappers have to say? Hey ! are the rappers Elistist too? i mean they come from a hood , but i gather they dont live there anymore( geesh ! they might get robbed if they did)......

take back our communities? Take them back from who? From the drug dealers and criminals? If you are talking about the A.A. communities taking them back from the criminals, the govt has been trying for years by putting out extra police in these communities, above and beyond what are seen in white neighborhoods. These guys are mostly what can be referred to as career black guys, aka guys who make a living out of being black and by inventing things that as a black man are holding them back. I remember watching K Powell on the real world, all he did was talk abt being black. It is a good thing there is a market for this or else K Powell would need to go out and work at a real job like all the white folk.

Who the hell is K. Powell, I will not even attempt to touch the rest of your idiotic statement. Or did I misunderstand and you were actually referring to your trailer parks and meth labs. Sorry !

Imani and Crystal, why no mention of Murs, Brother Ali, Rage Against the Machine or countless others who are actual trying to use Hip Hop as a tool to motivate the youth to get out and vote. This are the guys who have politics in the front of their minds, rather than the back. They're some of the most educated, motivated and outspoken in hip-hop, but since they aren't multi-platinum artists they're continually overlooked. FYI, Murs was MTVs artist of the week, he's coming out with "Murs for President" in a week, he recently spoke and the Youth Caucus at the DNC and he found the Paid Dues Tour which often tours in tandem with Rock the Bells. These are the kinds of people you should be talking to.

The reason that these artists are not mentioned is because articles about the other idiots, the ones with their pants down to their knees, the ones who continuously use the N word to describe each other and use the B word to describe women.

Artists that are actually trying to to include a message in their music are not as interesting to a lot of main stream consumers and people who look at those jerks with aren't saying anything worth while and choose to see them as representative of all black people.

Its sad to see how bigoted and prejudicial people are on here. Maybe if the people on here had actually ever stepped foot in an African American community or bothered to learn something other than a stereotype, they wouldn't assume that the communities ravaged by drugs and crime are in that state because the people think its "cool" Lets start with the drug war which budget has increased every year with only more drugs, addicts and people in prison to show. Or what about the crappy schools with teachers there just for their check, or the welfare hush money. No but keep your head up your *** because you must do so to foster your false belief that you are innately better and African americans are inherently deficient.

"The time is now to take back our communities!

The day that the balance of my people make note that OUR COMMUNITIES are ALREADY dominated by the machine that Mr Obama is a part of and begin to seek change and improvement FROM THEIR LEADERSHIP, guiding the people within - via the policies and priorities that they define within rather than seeing these leaders as agents to procure resources and benefits that were organized by people outside of our community, always on the chase to bring them inside for our perceived benefit per some right that we have....CHANGE is not going to come - at least not the CHANGE that we need.

The average large city which has a strong hip hop base also has the political party that is favored by them in power, most of these cities having their city council with a super majority of their party as well as the mayor, school board, state rep, state senator and US rep. One would think that will such a favorable political alignment they would start focusing on managing these people for change rather than constantly chasing their ideological and political adversaries.

Cooned, sounds like your nickname says it all. Leave the bigotry at home and get yourself educated.

After living in the projects as a 25 year old white male, I was amazed at the amount of poverty in our African American communities. Lack of education and resources have made these communities fail, not the citizens in them who pay taxes and work like every other american. Today's hip-hop is focused on material possession, however, if you read the lyrics of artists such as 2Pac or Notorious BIG, you see the daily lives of these Americans. Escaping poverty is not easy and it will take significant resources to rebuild these communities. As a nation we need to stop and listen to what created rap (poverty, unemployment, lack of education) and learn from our mistakes. In many ways, rap can be seen as a cry for help.

Hip hop artists should learn more about the candidates before they chose a side. It's amazing how much power they have over people, but they should used that power to make the world a better place. There are hip-hop and rap artists that are great role models for young America, but then there are others that say one thing and do the exact opposite.

These artists should encourage their fan base to vote regardless of which candidate they personally support.
