    About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh , had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

    'A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.'
    'A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.'
    'From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.'

    'The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years'

    'During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

    1. from bondage to spiritual faith;
    2. from spiritual faith to great courage;
    3. from courage to liberty;
    4. from liberty to abundance;
    5. from abundance to complacency;
    6. from complacency to apathy;
    7. from apathy to dependence;
    8. from dependence back into bondage'

    Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000 Presidential election:

    Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29
    Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000
    Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million
    Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1

    Professor Olson adds: 'In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare...' Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the 'complacency and apathy' phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the 'governmental dependency' phase.

    If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegal's and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

    If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message. If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

  • Posted By: varacefan @ 09/26/2008 7:56:42 AM

    The problem with Newt is he has a mind of his own. Why can't he be like the Dems who take their marching orders from Barney Frank and Harry Ried and do as they are told. Newt is his own man and really doesn't give a hoot who disagrees with him.

    • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 6:10:15 PM

      No one takes marching orders from Harry Ried. Certainly not the senate democrats. And they should not. I am at a loss how they could elect a "leader" like him. A joke. The democrats have had majority in both houses for almost 2 years and they achieved NOTHING. Under "leaders" like Pelosi and Ried, no wonder. We democrats seem to learn from the republicans, putting incompetent people into leadership positions.

    Right, Carter economics worked much, much better....

    Capitalism can be brutal. However, ask the 100MM murder victims of communist regimes in the 20th century which one they'd prefer....oh, sorry, you can't...they're dead.

    Whether you like him or not, Gingrich is a bright, principled guy, and not the boogey man the Democrats successfully made him out to be when he was in office. We need more folks like hm.

    • Posted By: kle5507 @ 09/26/2008 3:57:04 PM

      Petmal1212,

      Inflation under carter was 14%. Inflation under Reagan was 21%. Did Reagan win the cold war or did the Soviet Union Crashed under falling oil prices. Now, oil is @ $109 per barrel and the red menace has returned. Carter is a great man. His approached was ahead of his time. Peace between Egypt & Israel. Panama Canal is being improved and widen by the Panamanian people without cost to the US. What's your beef with Carter, Jr? You've been horse feed too much BS.

      Can't wait until Nov 4th. After Obama gets into office, then we can put Tom Delay, Karl Rove & other NeoCons on trial for treason. And you know what we do to traitors in this country don't you. Have a good day COMRAD!

      • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 5:58:30 PM

        Except, Regan inherited the inflation from Carter and fixed it. Carter was well meaning but incompetent when he was president. This is better than Bush who is ill meaning and even more incompetent. Lately Carter became senile or idiotic, or just simply being paid by oil interests. ...If you believe that an Obama administration would prosecute Rove or DeLay (as they should be) you are dreaming. He will not, as he is a politician, same as they are, nothing different or better. Albeit he is a better speker.

    In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future. I follow a economist named bob proctor who has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly. He perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown ,and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years Is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression. Banks in the US are going under one after the other. Country wide the largest morgage bank in the world Bear Stearns and Lehman brothers , and Merrill Lynch which are 3 out of the top 5 wall street firms. And now Fanny and Freddy which hold 50 percent of the home loans in the United States. The goverment took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. If they didn't the entire financially system would virtually shut down, the stock market would crash And we would suffer beyond what any of us have seen before The future of these companies will fall into the hands of our next president
    Bush just like Mcain doesn't understand the economy.

    That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it
    He does not understand exactly what is broken. Its no surprise that he doesnt. The people that make up these
    securities use complex math models very few people understand.
    Bush and mccain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.

    Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks take risks with all of our future.
    Now Phil Graham is the head of mccains economic policy ,and mccain wants to make him the next secretary of the treasury.
    No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time bush met with his economic advisors was in march. He either didnt realize or didnt care that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy in our lifetime.
    It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as bush has done mccain would be
    incredibly worse because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like bush did but a tanking economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 deficit. Most of Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
    If you do what you have always done then you will do get what you have always __________

    When it comes to policy bush and mccain are the same 90 percent of the time.
    So why are the polls even close then ?

    The chairman of mcains campaign recently said that people don't vote on issues

    they vote on a personality composite which means. He is trying to sell you personality instead of results.
    He believes people will vote against there own self interests.

    Lets teach him we are smarter then that .
    Hold them accountable now while it will still help
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

    • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 5:51:10 PM

      I will vote for Obama, because McCain having chosen Palin, can not be the choice of any rational voter. However, what a sorry state of our nation having these poor choices. We need a third party, neither the democrats nor the republicans in their present form are worthy of our vote.

  • Posted By: joeettore @ 09/29/2008 5:02:08 PM

    I have now found that the Republican party is useless. I have been a Republican all of my 68 years and I will no longer do that. You make me sick. You are as bad as the Democrates. Both of you are playing a stupid game which hurts all of the people. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Bob Barr is a better candidate than Obama or McCain. Youare all useless.

    • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 5:46:45 PM

      Bob Barr? Oh please! His main worry in the house of representatives was whether Clinton had a blow job or not. What a moron! We need someone who has some intellect and courage to think through the few and bad options we have as a nation and lead us out of this mess that the religious right and their puppet Bush created. Hillary Clinton comes to mind. But I prefer a new third party, call it the Rational Party, that would give home of the many of us who is fed up the major parties being controlled by their right/left fringes.

  • Posted By: GregAugustaGA @ 09/26/2008 9:12:00 AM

    And you Ms. Clift are doing what you always "love to do". Spouting your totally biased left wing rhetoric. The truth is the Democrats caused this mess. Jack Welch, an authority I believe and respect, said so on TV yesterday. The American people don't want to reward the rich for their misdeeds. Those in Congress like Dodd, Frank, Pelosi, et al are eager to mortgage the American people's future to protect their never ending gravy train from the financial industry. Shame on you and shame on them. What we need to do is vote ALL these bastards out, then sanitize every inch of the halls of Congress, and start with citizen politicians who will put the security and will of the people first. Pelosi and that bunch could care less.

    • Posted By: xeyeldinTX @ 09/26/2008 10:51:03 AM

      I am so sick of the rhetoric that misses reality. The Republicans did it. The Democrats did it. It's Bush's fault. Folks look in the mirror. This mess has been 20-30 years in the making. And every time we re-elected a politician who soft balled the public instead of speaking the hard truth, we encouraged. American wages have stagnated, the working public has over spent on credit cards and mortgages - masking their own wages inability to keep up with the rising cost of necessary goods as we grasp at the next cheaply produced piece of garbage from the third world country du juor. American's now have negative savings, we are bleeding good paying jobs with benefits and replacing them with retail or service industry jobs. We produce next to nothing, our porous borders further depress wages, and we have now learned in a very concrete way that trickle down economics, like communism, fails to live up to the utopia it promises. So as Americans it is time to quit pointing fingers and pick up a shovel and start digging our way out of this mess. If you have no debt and a great paying job, more power to you, but you are not representative of most Americans.

      • Posted By: GregAugustaGA @ 09/26/2008 3:35:39 PM

        I believe I pointed out what should be done. Vote ALL of these cheating, lying, dishonest bastards out. They are ALL cut from the same cloth. They are vulchers in Armani clothing. They have no shame, no morals, no American values, and no conscience. It's all about what THEY can get out of it.

        • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 5:39:32 PM

          OK, so who would you want us to vote for? I am convinced that we need a middle-of-the road new party, call it the Rational Party, that is not controlled by either the religious right (that gave us the last 8 disastrous Bush years), nor the ultra left (Move-on.org and their ilk) who forced Obama onto the democratic party. We deserve better than any of the two candidates, not to mention a nitwit like Palin (again a gift of the religious right to America).

    I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
    Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.
    To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.
    Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..
    So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.
    My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.
    Of course, it would NOT be tax free.
    So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.
    Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.
    That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.
    But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket.
    A husband and wife has $595,000.00.
    What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?
    Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.
    Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads
    Put away money for college - it'll be there
    Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
    Buy a new car - create jobs
    Invest in the market - capital drives growth
    Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves
    Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else
    Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
    If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed
    by one of our candidates for President.
    If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!
    As for AIG - liquidate it.
    Sell off its parts.
    Let American General go back to being American General.
    Sell off the real estate.
    Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
    Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.
    Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."
    But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!
    How do you spell Economic Boom?
    I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion
    We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC .
    And remember, The plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
    Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

    • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 5:34:29 PM

      Except that letting AIG sink would sink the US financial market....AIG under professional leadership (no republicans need to apply) can easily recover over the next few years provide a good payback on this loan to the taxpayers. Remember the Chrysler bailout? It was VERY controversial at the time. It was the right thing to do, we did not lose a taxpayer cent on it. This is the right thing to do, as well.

    • Posted By: kle5507 @ 09/26/2008 4:04:16 PM

      I agree with objmind, you need to re-take remedial math. This is what happens when you enroll into the Sarah Palin school of Creation and WitchCraft. You end up dumb as hell. Quit your ranting and get back to work. That minimum wage job you're currently at may not be there next week when your boss can't make the payroll because of higher interest between banks and business. Stupid dumb Americans. Not only are you Ugly. You're dumb as hell!

  • Posted By: vstillwell @ 09/26/2008 10:09:11 AM

    Newt Gingrich is a hypocrite. He'll destroy whatever good and bad things are in his way so he can see his name in the headlines. While he and his pals were ripping into Clinton over the Lewinsky affair, he was sleeping with his own secretary. He and his Republican pals got their wish for more deregulation and less transparency. Now look what we have. This modern day Republican party is a joke. It's this country's worst enemy. They've succedded in destroying our financial markets, our foreign policy, our prestige around the world. They use fear and religion to push forward their small minded, idiotic policies. It's a joke.

    • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 09/30/2008 5:30:14 PM

      I agree with your comment, except it is a tragedy, not a joke. Gingrich is a dangerous buffoon who clearly puts his ego over country, as most of the republicans of today do, including McCain.

  • Posted By: jwild @ 09/30/2008 9:40:05 AM

    Between Rove and Gingrich the Repulican party knows their president and vice president (were is he anyway Cheney?) are an empty shell and McCain/Paulin ticket is a sorry mess. People just want to clean house and get rid of all of them. What they so called stand on is a bunch of lies. Read The Limits of Power and you will see how American took off in a downwards spiral- written by a conservative that does not put Regan and any other president thereafter in such a good light.

  • Posted By: alexa60 @ 09/30/2008 2:35:05 AM

    I wish the Republican Party would become defunct. They just don't know enough about economics
    or pretty much anything. Its as if they are a becoming anarchists who don't want any government at all.
    Every man for himself in the richest country in the world. Its so sad. We look so uncivilized to the rest of
    the world and short sighted.

  • Posted By: Spooot @ 09/27/2008 9:23:46 AM

    I blame everyone, home buyers, mortgage brokers, appraisers, realtors, bankers, and last but not least the gov't. Here's a thought, don't buy something you can't afford!!!!!!!!! Homebuyers, take a course on economics before even thinking about purchasing a home, novel idea. Habitat for Humanity has it right for low income families, no interest loans and the first must is a course on homeownership, how to maintain a home, how to pay for one, how to be responsible. Mortgage Brokers, apparaisers, realtors, were all in cahoots, driving the market up, they all ought to go to jail, and some are and have. Gov't, the folks that passed the Community Reinvestment Act whereby almost anyone could qualify for a mortgage. As well all the politicians that benefitted from this fiasco ought to go to jail instead of pointing fingers, republicans and democrat alike because there are plenty of them. Get back to the 4C's, credit worthiness, capacity to pay, character and credibility. Last but not least DO NOT BUY IN A PANIC MARKET (purchasing a home), do not buy when the price are artifically inflated.

  • Posted By: olderwiser @ 09/26/2008 8:22:59 PM

    Newt, he can run the presidency from the nursing home with Palin's help. She can go stare into Putin's eyes to see what is next. You know. Foreign policy.

    • Posted By: olderwiser @ 09/26/2008 8:25:26 PM

      And don't worry about domestic policy. Just boil soup bones from the Wall Street bull to feed the starving citizens in the street. They'll figure it out and get things straight after the crash.
