McCain did not say Kennedy had been in the hospital and released. Rather, his statement indicated that Kennedy was in the hospital as he was speaking. Yes, it was a cheap political ploy to invoke the Kennedy name and beneath the dignity of the office McCain seeks. Obama had the good sense to leave the subject alone, and McCain would have been well-advised to do the same.
Ted Kennedy's name will not be sullied by your suggestion that things get sticky when it is used. He is the last lion in the Senate, and we will miss him when he is gone.

    • Posted By: beghan @ 09/27/2008 8:55:45 PM

No, his name will not be sullied by my comments, that is true, as are my comments.
I should point out that you are the one to have brought up and made an issue of the Kennedy comment, not I. You make too much of what was a very short sentence in acknowledging his being in the hospital. It doesn't matter to me, or to most people I imagine, that he actually might have been settled in at home by the time the statement was made. Who cares?

      • Posted By: wareinparis @ 09/28/2008 6:26:57 AM

The simple truth is that McCain can not and does not get his facts straight. Further, as I originally stated, the forum in which he chose to do his inept reporting was inappropriate. McCain would have been better advised to answer the question asked by Mr. Lehrer.

I'm sure ICYEYES800 is very white or he/she wouldn't be so prejudiced. The civic war has ended, in case you didn't know! I'm a descendant of white Southerners myself, but I have many friends that are black and wonderful people! I would be ashamed to know I had a white friend as hateful as you seem to be. If you don't like OBAMA, that's fine . . . but how about some intelligent reasons? Then again, if you were intelligent, you wouldn't be making such racist comments. There are many fine blacks that are intelligent with good ethics, just as there are many whites that are prejudiced with their hearts filled with hatred.

Haven't run into many descent people on this blog...just brainwashed blacks who are willing to allow our country to be destroyed in order to say "wes got a black president"....that's just stupid..voting on a person because of his color....although I have to admit that he wouldn't be where he is, IF he weren't a NEGRO..

I am writing this message to inform people of the injustice being perpretrated by Fox News against Barack Obama. For the past two weeks there has been nothing but negative reporting against senator Obama by the Fox News network, which is unfair to listeners and the candidate. This networks seemingly biased opinions are not of interest to us viewers. My concern is that negative reporting like this will influence voters that are undecided of which candidate best express their wishes. I depend on these news stations for fair, accurate and just reporting regardless of the outcome whether it be a debate or any other current event and if that cant be accomplished I feel that it is grounds for that station (Fox News network) to be boycotted until they learn and understand that those types of injustices will not be tolerated. If anyone else can relate to the unfair reporting of Fox News I suggest that you join us in a boycott of this news station. PASS THIS MESSAGE ALONG.

The absolutely most hysterical part of the WHOLE SHOW was at the end....did everyone see Michelle approach Cindy???? Wow, that was something...It looked like sasquatch reaching down to pick up a Barbie and there for a minute I think Cindy was scared of the angry black woman...You had to love that vision,....Reminded me of King Kong going after the cute blonde chick....ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS...who would have thought?????

    • Posted By: beekeeperz @ 09/28/2008 12:24:31 AM

at least Michelle can run with the ball. What are Cindys skills? beauty, well that is only skin deep. how shallow can we be in this crisis?

      • Posted By: ICYEYES800 @ 09/28/2008 1:40:55 AM

You forgot to mention that she's RICH, GRACEFUL, and LADYLIKE!!!!! Michelle should be playing football for the New England Patriots....I'm not even sure that she is not a he....dued, she's got an adam's apple..
Maybe she's a transvestite...If so, they didn't do a very good job....Cindy looks like a Presidnet's wife, Michelle looks like a FOOTBALL PLAYER...dude her feet have got to be size 13....BIg, Big, HUGE person

McCain, the military expert, doesn't know the difference between strategy and tactics.

  • Posted By: kars @ 09/27/2008 6:08:36 PM

just the latest: "...its not nice to pick on wrinkled up old white haired dudes.."

The ageist comments about this older candidate are getting hard to stomach. Racist comments about Obama would not be tolerated, why is this garbage?

Whether or not McCain can out-debate a smooth talking, more arrogant opponent, he has to have more knowledge about what the yaaa to do about most of the country's problems. The fact he actually voted on many issues can't be held against him, when at the same time, someone who voted "present" gets a pass. Phooey.

    • Posted By: beekeeperz @ 09/28/2008 1:14:24 AM

ok but explain why 65 in America is the most common age to retire? And at the ripe age of 72 is when you want to begin 4 years of service to be the Commander in Chief? And what age do many kids take the keys away from their aging parents so they cannot drive? What does 3score and ten mean to you? It is the life expectancy of man. That leaves Sarah Palin steering our economy who buys designer clothing and she is out of touch with main street. Foreign Policy? listen on Thursday

  • Posted By: tender @ 09/28/2008 1:07:36 AM

    McCain is for war.
    That is all he knows.
Anyone that backs him is for war.

  • Posted By: NathanH @ 09/27/2008 7:14:25 PM

iceyeyes that has to be the ignorant thing that I've heard in these discussions! If you really believe McCain gave up campaigning for you and I than your a fool! He did an interview with Katy Kuric that night whilst, Palin continued to tour the country, new ads ran and surrogates were out everywhere. You should stop watching FIXED news and do a little research on your own. This is the scary part about voting, people that believe this B.S. get a chance to vote.

    • Posted By: ICYEYES800 @ 09/27/2008 9:16:36 PM

OUCH, you're implying that you have some inner connections with the committee working on this issue...Which I seriously doubt....McCain is THERE, regardless of anything else, he is making himself AVAILABLE....All Osama is doing is running around saying "He just doesn't Understand" Wow, sounds a lot like that's what McCain repeatedly told him last night...When is this dude EVER going to come up with something ORIGINAL?????? He's taken every proposal and adopted them as his own, so now, he's not even original enough use his OWN WORDS!!!!!! Axelrod, where are you??????

      • Posted By: NathanH @ 09/28/2008 12:54:40 AM

No inner connection, I just have a mind of my own and I use it. I can say that I am going to save the world so I am too busy to campaign and go on Letterman but wait....I can still interview and fool all the Fox new viewers to believe that I really care about them. McCain did nothing in DC but put on a show. If you think your better now than you were 8 years ago please vote for McCain because you are obviously uninformed and out of touch with reality. It is a sad day when people like yourself who make some sort of a 5th grade playground reference to Obama's name, calling him Osama, actually get to vote for our president!

  • Posted By: ICYEYES800 @ 09/27/2008 6:56:16 PM

Osama promises to put our country FIRST???? Well, why in the hell isn't he in D.C. with McCain and trying to fight for the wellbeing of the American "WORKING CLASS"?????? I think INTEGRITY is the word...while McCain has given up running all over the US trying to speak, Osama has continued on his treacherous path...THIS guy(Osama) is the most dangerous threat to the existance of the USA.....His appearance was a PERFORMANCE and that's all, he is WRONG on almost everything he espouses....you can't take a two year senator and wave a magic wand and give him the knowledge and world view that a 30 year senator has....Osama missed his call,,,he should have been a pastor, like Rev.Wright....He's only in the position, becaue he's black, and he's made himself well known to the black society, all be it bad/good....he's walked on the back of every black connection he could to get where he is, then....like Farrakhan, Wright, he distances himself from them....Hell, he'll throw ANYBODY under the bus, If I were Michelle and his daughters, I'd be very, very, afraid!!!!!!

    • Posted By: kenkarman @ 09/28/2008 12:28:31 AM

comments like yours make me wish I had a slap button on my keyboard, I really dont want to try to guess what color you are becouse that is tacky. But I dont mind telling you that I am white, 54yrs old , a redneck, a former republican(*its easier for me to admit now that I've defected) and I love Obama, He is a J.F.K. in my eyes, But let me make it easier for you. When you open your wallet try this excercise = When you pull the money out that is a McCain vote!=====Now, when you put the money back in, thats an Obama vote=simple. Now try this over and over, if your doing this right you should get the clue. And if you don't. Oh well, you can always go back to kissing your sister or joining the new republican singles club called intimate cousins unite.

Icyeyes800 you are truly a disgrace to the USA for your stupidity. If I were you I would be very very afraid of you and people like you. NcCain absolutely did NOT go to Washington to do anthing for you ' Country First ' my foot !. McCain went to Washing for McCain and NO ONE ELSE. Fact is he is on NO committees relative to the fiscal situation in the USA. Secondly he went to the White House and said basicaly NOTHING, he was just there for the SHOW. Thirdly his campaign was in full swing with his surrogates, the Palin super brain (not) and TV ad's going full swing. Fourthly, how is it that he was so desperate to go to Washington that he had tp 'suspend' his campaign but had time to do interviews with the TV networks and in fact did not go to Washington for a full 22 hrs,, clearly he was NOT in any hurry to get there despite having piblic and private (his wife's 2 jets) that could get hi there in hours. Fifthly, I hope that you realize that when he got to Washington he caused more negative disruption with his posturing resulting in stally discussions (he is a self righteoug, arrogant man).. And most of all the crisis that the USA is having right now is a direct result of McCain's policies that let the rich and powerful on Wall Street and the banking Industry have free reign to rip off the American public willy nilly. Wake up ! It is blind and dumb people like you who will destroy the US long before ANY external terrorist will.

First of all the name is OBAMA it is people like you that hates on this man. McCain have been up there for 26 yrs. and what have he done? Nothing! I can tell you are white and still back in the 60's. It is time for a change I think your folks is so afraid that this man will be president without a doubt. The first Black president so get your priorities straight!!

  • Posted By: adamhnadir @ 09/27/2008 10:12:45 PM

Make no mistake America...we can't afford another embarrassment for the next 4-8 years. Obama is a thinker who weighs in every thing before punctuations, he is also a man who WILL GET Bin Laden who is still at large despite $1000000000000 expenditure. Plus, don't we want a COOL dude who wears tastefully tailored suits below those COOOOOOOOOOL sun shades? Or do we want Uncle let me take my memory pills so I can think and press the right red button in the Oval office.

    • Posted By: ICYEYES800 @ 09/27/2008 11:20:23 PM

PARDON ME..You seem to be dazed and confused, like Obama....He has a record of voting on important ISSUES in the senate the whole 140 weeks he's been there...then after seeing that the issue passed without his vote, he would ask for a withdrawl of that vote and it was recorded as an error on pressing the correct button...this has happened repeatedly..and frankly, if this dude isn't smart enought to press the YES OR NO button....DO WE REALLY WANT this crook sitting on the MOST IMPORTANT BUTTON???
I think not...he proved again that he is not the quality of man who is capable of dealing with international affairs or to gain the confidence of WE, THE PEOPLE!!!!

      • Posted By: Mom4Bama @ 09/28/2008 12:15:40 AM

As a McCain supporter I would think you wouldn't bring this up... Let's get down the facts people - McCain is going to get the old, boring, scared of change votes and Obama will get the votes of people who are tired of seeing this country go down hill in the arms of Bush. I can only pray that this country casts their vote for the right reasons and not based on the party they represent, as our children deserve a bright future and McCain (at 72) doesn't have a whole lot of future to fight for.

  • Posted By: ToadTreeHugger @ 09/27/2008 11:56:42 AM

McCain correctly pointed out that Obama voted for Cheney's energy bill, calling it a "piñata of perks" for oil companies. McCain correctly pointed out that Obama requested nearly $1 billion in earmarks since becoming a senator.

    • Posted By: mmcgee @ 09/27/2008 11:46:56 PM

And Obama correctly pointed out that McCain currently supports granting these oil companies 4 billion in tax breaks. I never quite understood it either. They are leased public lands to drill, they take public minerals from those lands, they sell them back to us at outrageous prices and then yell "Don't tax me bro (c)".

    • Posted By: befair @ 09/27/2008 12:22:34 PM

What McCain did not say about the ear-marks that Obama requested, Obama requested none this year, last year he requested $311 million, that averages out to about $25.00 per person in Obama's state of Illinois. Under the Governorship of Sarah Palin her state of Alaska asked for, THIS year, $198 million, that averages out to about $295.00 for every person in Alaska.

I am a veteran and I am disgusted by the lies that McCain spews about his love for vets. He has repeatedly voted against increased funds for the VA to support injured Iraq vets and tried to take credit for the new GI Bill that he voted against! Nobody challenges him because of his service but I think it's time that someone does! He has a 20% approval rating from Disabled Veterans of America! That shows how much we love him....what a joke...quit hiding behind your POW status and start to stand up for our vets and stop the false claims." We all know that you know that we don't like you

    • Posted By: ICYEYES800 @ 09/27/2008 7:04:27 PM

You apparently haven't done much homework and have listened to the BUll that Osama is putting out...the reason that MCain didn't approve the bill that was attempting to be passed, DID'T DO ENOUGH FOR VETERANS......now on the the flip side, we do have ISSUES with Osama votingto cut off funding for the necessities of our military to fulfill the mission safely...I too am a veteran, so you need to do some homework because there is no bigger advocate for "THE TROOPS" than McCain

      • Posted By: mmcgee @ 09/27/2008 11:39:09 PM

Yup, McCain is all about supporting troops which is why VA groups give Obama an 80% grade for troop support yet McCain gets a 20%. The facts and groups speak for themselves.

John McCain???s comments about Dwight Eisenhower were insightful and revealing not only about accountability in leaders but what the United States??? approach should be toward Iraq and to Al Qaida in Afghanistan. John McCain said that Dwight Eisenhower wrote out two letters the night before the D-Day invasion of Normandy. One letter was praising the success and valor of our troops for their successful landing at Normandy and the other letter was his resignation and acceptance of responsibility for our defeat. Whether Eisenhower actually wrote a letter of resignation is not that relevant. The larger point is that we faced tough opponents during World War II and it was not preordained that we were going to win the war. Our war effort and strategy during the early years of World War II was to defeat Nazi Germany and then go after Japan. Remember at that time, it was not a sure bet that the United States was going to win World War II. The United States made preparations for an invasion of California and Alaska. We built the Alaska transcontinental highway from Canada to protect Alaska because we did not know for sure that we could control the sealanes off our Pacific Coast given the strength of the Japanese Navy. In 1941, Germany had not attacked the United States but was allied under the Axis Pact with Japan and posed an immediate threat to the United States. Germany was considered the stronger threat and therefore it was appropriate to focus and beat Germany before Japan was ultimately forced to surrender. Remember German warplanes did not attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941. The strategy is the same for Iraq and Afghanistan. Iraq under Sadaam Hussein had the fourth largest standing army in the world and was arming its army to the teeth with its then roughly two hundred million dollars a day in oil revenue from nearly four million barrels a day in oil production before the war. Just as FDR went after Germany before focusing our efforts on Japan, it was appropriate to go into Iraq before we turned our attention to Afghanistan. With Iraq???s continuing arms purchases under Sadaam Hussein, the loss of American soldiers casualties in wounded and dead would have been greater if we had waited until our efforts in Afghanistan were concluded.

    • Posted By: mmcgee @ 09/27/2008 11:35:51 PM

So, McCain makes up "facts" ( He lies through his teeth) because it makes a good story and plays into his supposed foreign policy credentials and you claim that it isn't relevant?
In a leader how about we demand Honesty and trustworthiness first.
McCain now has as much credibility as "sniper fire" Clinton.

    • Posted By: Jon T @ 09/27/2008 3:17:27 PM

The United States Marines invaded Guadacanal in May 1942 and the United States Army joined the Allies in North Africa in May 1942. The war was fought on those two fronts at the same time by millions of men and women on a scale you can only imagine. We went after both powers at the same time with major problems in each theater. Iraq did not attack us nor foster those who attacked us. Saddam allowed no power but his. Afghanistan did not attack us nor the Taliban but Al Quaeda. The Taliban regime harbored the leaders of Al Quaeda and protected them. We attacked the source in Afghanistan and rightfully. Rumsfield, Cheney and Bush should all have been fired and impeached for Iraq. During the debate McCain made a big deal about General Petraeus's strategy on the ground winning the peace but, he did not mention that it was based on observations and actions by soldiers on the ground that worked, in particular, a Marine Colonel whose actions were highly successful and adopted by our military leaders.

Jon T: Where were you when Saddam BOASTED being ready to attack the U.S.? Where were you when Saddam boasted a nuke program that even your buddy Clinton claimed they had?..Where were you when Saddam proclaimed that we were in for "the MOTHER of all battles"?...Saddam was a clear and present danger not only for us but for the region in general...Now dictators in that region think thrice before building their armies and shouting threats our way....Iran looks to be next if Ahmedinajhad continues his rhetoric...Wiping nations off maps and breaking hands of any aggressor..That doesnt sound familiar to you?...Next he will be wanting to have a sword duel with our next president as Saddam wanted to do just before he high tailed it..I can think of a few dictators that made their way into the history books dead...Ahmedinajhad looks to be getting ready to have his name added. Negotiations will never work w/ a man w/ his ideology and mindset.

It seems that the masses have forgotten 9/11 and the horror that our nation felt..We were paniced, and we were angry...and somebody had to answer for the attack...personally, loving history and following the battles that the USA has faced since the beginning, I was somwhat taken aback by the fact that when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour...our answer was a nuclear warhead.....Now, we were attacked, unproved and in an unbelieveable way....I expected somebody to get the NUKE laid on the door...SOMEBODY had to have the BA$$S to have an quick and LOUD statement that the United States would not be bullied or scared by Muslim idiots, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE...Clueless Osama is the greatest threat this nation has EVER faced...GOD HELP US ALL

Agree or disagree, but voicing my opinion is my United States Citizen right. I'm an Obama supporter all the way! He handled the debate as a winner and more importantly as our future President. Obama directivemess to the ecomony issues were very strong, though not too elaborate and really what do you expect? The truth is any running President can tell you what you want to hear and we still take our chances once they are President to carry out what they say; 9 times out of 10, they don't. McCain continued to use a stragegy of the "I'm the experienced", but really, why is our country running into to the ground now? We need someone with new/fresh ideas and not someone that has already been corrupted by the government, but I guess as long as his pockets are getting filled, who care? I do. The fact is McCain tried to weasel out of facts that were directed at him by Obama, so I can see why McCain couldn't look directly in his face. As the saying goes, Truth hurts!!

He isn't responsible for working with Phil Gramm to destabilize the American economy?
Im certainly glad to know he wasn't involved in these types of scandals before, oh. wait :

Obama Barak was gracious, intelligent, articulate and very knowledgable about the world, America and issues in the first debate. John McCain did not answer the questions, lied, and came across as an old, doddering fool. I can't wait for Joe Biden to debate Sarah Palin. She is clearly not experienced nearly enough to be vice president, especially, when McCain is nearly 72. My vote goes to Obama and Biden.

  • Posted By: Lexus2lovr @ 09/27/2008 10:15:40 AM

Being an Independent, I signed up to vote for the first time 4 years ago. I was listening to my husband speak about the Republicans, which of course he is. I thought little about my vote and gave it to Bush. Now 4 years later, I regret that vote. Listening to the debate last nigh, I listened to McCain repeatedly say "I don't think Sen Obama quite understands it" as I listened to him speak, I found that he was the one who didn't quite get it. I see Sen McCain in the same boat that Pres Bush is in. I believe Sen Obama DOES get it and that he will be the one who can change the course of our country. It's time for change and enough with the Republican's and their SSDD.

    • Posted By: feefee @ 09/27/2008 12:46:37 PM

I'm so glad that you saw that last night. McCain is like those older people you work with and they make every attempt to keep the new younger guy/gal down. I agree with you he totally doesn't get it.

      • Posted By: sandeebubbe @ 09/27/2008 5:22:57 PM

Through my career I found those "older folks" I've worked for and with were often caring and anxious to share their experience and knowledge and enjoyed seeing the next generation developing and successful. Take advantage of that. Learn from their experience and experiences. If you don't know history you are doomed to repeat it.
Obama reminds me aof a young Jimmy Carter. An idealist without a clue and probably tied with George Bush as the worst presiden during the last seventy or eighty years.

        • Posted By: adamhnadir @ 09/27/2008 10:06:34 PM

Obama is definitely an idealist, which is exactly what America needs at the moment in a president. By the way speaking of idealists a few names come to mind Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, John Q Adams, James Monroe, and restricted only to the political thought Benjamin Franklin. You know the guys who took on King "Mad" George, free millions and debated on how to write a certain document called "the declaration of Independence." Idealism is always refreshing in times of political anarchy. And, he is nothing like George "W" Bush.

        • Posted By: citizenwhocares @ 09/27/2008 6:52:44 PM

I have a feeling that History will be much kinder to Carter than to Bush. I doubt that there is such a thing as a "close" second to Bush for the worst.
