Trilling's is an essential frame of mind for tricky times, particularly viz the "shrinking space" available to imagination. The underlying thesis of Trilling contemporary Northrop Frye's The Educated Imagination dovetails strongly. Seek it out - just 65 pages (actually a CBC lecture). The ability to transcend literalism and understand the "other" via metaphor is humankind's saving grace. We lose it at our peril.
