At first blush I saw possibility. At second blush cheap fortified wine with a screw cap.
At first sight of Obama, I saw corruption, hate for our country, out-of-control desire to turn this country to Socialism and Maxism, his radical character, his sleezy relationships, and his desire to destroy America. And, it has gotten worse!
First off, its marxism, not maxism, and could you please provide some examples. I am not seeing you on this one? Radical? Hate for our country. Where are you getting this?
This dang keyboard keeps making mistakes. You like to discuss important issues. LOL! What a birdbrain!
Yeah, dont you hate it when that dang keyboard makes all the mistakes, not the person typing them. I am sure that explains why all of Palins comments come out sounding like incoherent gibberish- its that dang teleprompter. But you still have not answered the question- please explain his radical background and give some examples of his hate for this country. It sounds like some- birdbrain- propaganda that does not have much factual backing, much like McCains stump promises and speeches he has been spewing out these past few weeks.
Now, I see why you are backing Obama. You have not been listening or just plain ignoring it like most liberal idiots. What anti-American group do you belong to?
do you know the words conventional wisdom? If you did you would understand why people are concerned about PALIN. This blog is about PALIN not Bush, not McCain, not Obama, not JFK, or any other president or presidential candidate. And so far your remarks are off the WALL
The REAL reason for "Sarah Palin" be of the current significance is that WHOMEVER were in her place would only be a FART-beat away from becoming president, due to McCain's age/health condition. Of course it does intensify for the particulars of Sarah Palin being conspicuously unqualified and even a RISK for the positions contended.
Palin is a terminator who is programmed to gibberish and licensed to kill. Her decision to give birth to a Down-syndrome child trapped a human soul in a lifelong jail and set up a child for failure. Her daughter's free sex with wild boys violated the Bible. McCain's decision to nominate Palin shows that this old man can no longer tell the difference between black and white.
The point that people are missing is that John McCain didn't need Sarah Palin to shore up his foreign policy credentials. That was Obama when he chose Biden. McCain chose Palin for her energy policy, her connection with the middle class and her drive towards reform. I fully believe that she can do all of those very well if give the opportunity.
Her energy policy? You mean the one where we do nothing to find alternative energy sources while we deplete our oil resources and damage an ecosystem- oh right, I forgot about that one. And where are you getting this connection to the middle class and drive towards reform? She is a female Cheney- more secrecy, more cover up, more I can do what I want and do not ask me, more I do not need to know how to be a VP Ill do what I want and the American people can suffer- and considering that she is against economic regulation, she is for the possibility of invading Iran, Russia, and North Korea, that she feels the No Child Left Behind act has been effective, and that a flat tax rate really does help the middle class- I would say that not much will really be reformed, or even changed from the current Administration. I can also say not much will be done to help the middle class.
What middle class are you talking about. No middle class I know since she really shows less knowlege about both our economy and international impact. Also, her record seems to show that sometimes the middle class just gets in her way. I think if you looked at both parties, if the President were to not be able to run the nation for some reason or another who has the best backup? Palin, who from her interviews would attack everyone in sight (which seems strange with such a prolife stance) or Biden who at least would get more respect in the world than the gorgeous comment we see her getting.
Yeah, and I love Obama interviews. He is freakin' scary. He could get a job on SNL playing Osama Bin Laden.
Here you go Palin fans...What has been exposed of Palin is called the Peter Principle. I will even provide the link....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle Every person with the exception of Bush and his administration reaches it some point in their life. Eight years late, and this article has nothing to do with him.
When a person is properly vetted, they go through an interview process. When a person is improperly vetted, things come out sometimes in the worst possible fashion. When you saw Palin being interviewed by Couric, the answers that were given by her were unscripted. Unfortunately, questions were not asked of Palin like Couric and the three other interviews she gave as part of the vetting process. If she was asked anything like that before she was introduced, she would never have made the cut. Or you can speculate that she was given questions like that, and McCain liked the answers she gave. We will never know.
Sure you can practice for the debate. Sure you can even memorize some things, and perhaps we may see some improvement on her answers Thursday. However it does not change the fact she has gone way over her head with her abilities.
George Will, David Frum, and David Brooks and Kathleen Parker have asked her to step down. Zakaria is now joined in the chorus of concern. I think that everyone should be taking a close look and think about one thing. Do you think based upon her interviews, that you can look at someone in their eye and say, I think Palin is presidential, and can take over in a moments notice?
And one other note, if Palin did step down, she would not be the first one either. Think Spiro Agnew and Thomas Eagleton in modern times. Sure saving face is ideal, however, under these circumstances, is it better to save face, or think of the good of our country. And this my fellow bloggers is coming from an Independent who would not have hestitated to vote for McCain in 2000.
There is another blog called McCain vs. Obama right here in Newsweek that would be really more appropriate to post your moronic ramblings.
I am a fan of my country, my fellow Americans, and my chidren and grandchildren. I don't care who beats Obama as long as he is not allowed to become dictator of this country. Any damn fool can see that he is a fake, a puppet on the strings of a corrupt and greedy polical advisor group and is controlled by the corrupt underground in this country. Why does he have financial advisors who drove our financial system into the ground and is now asking the American people to bail them out? How blind and stupid are you anyway? You must be one of the young, ignorant college kids that is just looking for a cool and hip president; not one that cares about their country.
Thats nice prose, and so JJ why do you post things about the government, the functioning of government, marxism, etc, in a blog that is talking about Palin? What does your comments have anything to do with her? And, apparently you did not read anything over on another blog where it is McCain Vs. Obama? Your out of your league here.
You idiots think if you can destroy Palin, you elevate Obama's acceptability as a viable candidate to be the president of our great country. Palin can walk circles around Obama. And, you are right. I am out of my league. I lowered myself to your level to see if I can understand why you idiots back Obama!
She destroys her own. Nobody has to do that for her. Why do you think she is not allowed to talk to the press? If she was smart, and could hold her own, there would not be any hiding. If she could stand on her own this article would not be here, nor the comments from George Will, David Frum, David Brooks and Kathleen Parker. This is the first time in American history that a vice-prez candidate cannot talk to the press. Do i need to go on?
Trust me Europe, JIm Johnson does not speak for America. Neither do I. No one does. That's what so cool about this country. Guys like Jim get to say whatever they want, no matter how stupid it is. That is what scares me the most about people him. They swallow the McShame/Failin' campaign lie upon lie, and never see what's happening to them. P.T. Barnum was right, and McLIar is depending on it: "There's a sucker born every minute."
I can tell that you still wear dirty diapers and your mother breast feeds you. You are too young to even vote. Either that or you are a complete idiot!
Sorry, Jimbo. I'm 57. And only a partial idiot. Proven by my bothering to take the time to talk to adolescents such as yourself.

Here is Palin Mr. Brains. You tell me if she is brilliant after watching this video
Thank you Fareed Zakaria, your editor and Newsweek for the article on Palin. I and millions of other women like me, are incensed at the outrageous choice of Sarah Palin for VP. Thank you for publishing an article like I haven't seen since Ben Bradlee, Katherine Graham and Woodward and Bernstein days. It's great to see real journalism taking a stand in clear and precise language for all to see. Kudo's Newsweek! I'm going to buy a subscription today!
You are part of the small group of women in America who are backward in their thinking and so jealous that you can't stand it. The clean, wholesome Hollywood women feel the same way. They don't want their way of life threatened either. They like being the filth and the scum of the earth. Character has become the last measure of a presidential or vice presidential candidate. Clinton had a lot to do with that. He took advantage of a young FEMALE Whitehouse aid and destroyed her while destroying the image of our presidential position worldwide. And, women like you can just overlook that. Where are the great women who fight for women's rights? Are they hiding under the rocks of hate and anger like Obama?
Actually that young, innocent woman you say Clinton destroyed is making millions selling purses. She can only be so thankful that he propelled her into the success she no question would never have otherwise seen. And how can you truly say that Clinton, before Bush, ruined our reputation worldwide. The world hates Americans even more with Bush as President- there have been countless polls to show this. And to say that these women are jealous of Palin- jealous of what- I do not think there is a successful, career oriented, or even stay at home mother who would aspire to be a thoughtless, naive, national spectacle, with a knocked up teenager who is about to be married in a shot-gun wedding, in the middle of a political scandal and cover-up- please tell me, what is so enviable? If anything women are afraid that Palin will set them back. And furthermore the reaction smart women are having to Palin is the same reaction simple women had to Hillary Clinton. They saw her as a threat, because she was strong, intelligent, a mother, a successful lawyer and politician and used her brains to get ahead in life- they could not compete. I can assure you that the women supporting Obama is neither a small one nor a backward thinking one- they simply are looking out for their country with the knowledge that Palin could only set them and it back!
What women are you talking to? I'm a very accomplished young woman, with many female friends just like me. We're all supporting Obama. I work with women from their 20s to their 60s and almost all are supporting Obama. Suggesting jealousy is ludicrous. We don't have an issue with McCain choosing a woman for VP, rather it's the woman he chose. Palin has no knowledge of foreign policy, is a blinking, stuttering mess when a question deviates from her carefully schooled responses, has showcased corruption, deceit, and abuse of power, and had to go to 6 different schools for her degree! I'm sure there are way more qualified, intelligent women out there who could have been tapped.
Count me as one of the incensed! Palin gives credit to everyone who has ever said women are unfit for leadership.
Hear, hear!!! I'm tired of the spin. We need to appreciate those willing to speak the simple truth - no matter what side it supports. Thank you Fareed!
McCain's choice was reckless from the start. How it took the country this long to realize it is remarkable. Makes one wonder if we can really maintain a democracy when so many are fooled by the superficial. Palin and McCain should be removed from the ballot.
Let's give Ms Palin a little credit for working to educate herself. Reportedly, she's at Epcot today on a foreign relations crash course. There's a lot for her to learn there.
Yeah, Obama had his crash course in Florida over the 4 days prior to the debate! He 'sounded' like an 'expert'. At least, he fooled the ignorant!
Speak for yourself. Do you enjoy putting your foot in your mouth?
The village idiot speaks again. Where's the beef?
Your out of your league son. Wrong blog, go to http://www.newsweek.com/id/161325/output/comments

Don Rickles' Ms. Hockey Puck will destroy Putin, just you wait and see.
Thank you Fareed Zakaria. There are so few voices of sanity in this campaign so it's nice to see him joining the ranks. There are some truly sad partisan responses in the comments here, I feel compelled to point out that speaking the truth does not equate to political attack. This nation needs all the thinkers it can round up to speak the truth these days.
Yes, thank you Zakaria! You bring out the weak, the meek, the gutless, the ignorant, the spineless, the dishonest, and the helpless liberal Obama backers. Like you, they can only criticize the opposing side and can never provide a thread of evidence that Obama is the REAL thing, and they never attempt to clarify why they believe in him and worship him. Yes, he won the debate on style and memorized answers, but he never volunteered anything od substance to support his messages of promise and hope. He is a puppet on the end of strings being dangled by his corrupt and greedy political advisors. God, please help the weak and meek before they destroy the country that their forefathers left to them to protect and conserve!
OBAMA is the one who attacks the other side? What about McCain's slandering, untruthful ads? And how do you memorize an answer to a question you don't know? ESP? McCain's own party is sick of him--they told him to leave DC and let them take care of business! Instead, he made a very real national crisis into a spectacle. He was in my home city yesterday talking about how he had been the key person in getting the bailout passed--then it FAILED! What a moron!
You need to get away from Obama. You are picking up his habit of lying to the American people. You don't know the truth or if you do, you won't post the truth about the low class character of Obama. His character comes from the slums and political underworld of Chicago.
He comes from the slums and political underworld? Good job Johnson, reclaim the elitist title for the Republicans- it was misplaced on Obama anyway. And also, before running your mouth again, you say that all Obama supporters do it worship him without providing examples- if you take a good look on this site, all you get is mindless catch phrases of McCains a maverick and he is a war hero, but no substance- while all you get from Obama supporters is a laundry list of reasons for why he is the stronger candidate- look at yourself- you offer up nothing of substance to why McCain should be President. I will give you several reason why I feel Obama is a stronger candidate- his proven track record of voting both in the (US Senate and the Illinois Senate) for the betterment of the American and people- including education reform and healthcare reform. His refreshing approach to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that do not ring bells of the neo-con nightmares that McCain will only continue to perpetuate- not to mention that Obama has higher support with world leaders and will be able to mend relationships that Bush destroyed with even some of our closest allies. Other points- Obamas approach to the economy is not a continuation of Bush economics that led to this mess in the first place- Obama would bring back regulation that would act as a watchdog preventing another financial crisis. And furthermore, Obama picked a running mate with decades of experience in politics and the senate- a slight comfort compared to the Eskimo Barbie McCain is parading around. So there, from someone supporting Obama is a list of reason why I will be voting for him. So shut up or put up- explain your flawed thinking with some real evidence.
If I only had a brain!
My name for the GOP "base" is "The 30%'ers." The 30% who, when polled, approve of George Bush. These are the same 30% who were initially and remain "excited" by Palin. They're the folks who think John McCain's judgement on putting Palin on the ticket can't be questioned. Barnum and Bailey said it best. I'd like a poll to determine the 30%'ers average income and years of schooling... I can forecast a a strong causal relationship.
And who makes up the 9% that approve of the Democrat-led Congress? They want to correct that situation by electing more Democrats. And, believe it or not, they really think that electing Obama will improve the White House! This reminds me of the Aggies that were buying hay for $2 a bale and selling it for $1 a bale. They thought they could make more money by buying a larger truck. If more Democrats are elected to Congress, their approval rating will drop close to 0%!
Do you know how the checks and balance system works? Do you know the word filibuster, or veto? If you did, you would understand a majority of one is not a majority to do overrides of veto or filibuster.
His approval is now down to 27% according to the latest Gallup poll posted 10am PDT
I would rather have a Vice president learning on the job, than the President. Women are good at more than one thing. I wonder who wrote Courics' guestions for her?
Yes, Women are good at more than one thing. Many women are more than good at many, many things. Sarah Palin is obviously not one of them. She is an embarrassment to intelligent women every where. The dozens of Republican women who are way more qualified than Palin to run for Vice President must be sick to their stomachs watching her. I'm waiting for them as a group of intelligent women with integrity to be honest and speak up.
You are absolutely right. Woman are good at more than one thing. And many woman are more than good and many, many things. Sarah Palin is not one of them. She is an embarrassment to intelligent women. The dozens of Republican women who would be much more qualified for Vice President than Palin must be horrified at this gal representing their party. I await any one of them with integrity and intelligence to be honest and admit it.
I LOVE the Sarah Palin interviews! She is freakin' hilarious! That "deer-caught-in-the-headlights" look? Priceless! I think she has missed her calling, though. She should get a job at SNL playing Tina Fey.
Until now I respected your work as a journalist. Your critique of Palin was acceptable. In strongly suggesting she step down or that McCain replace her you went over the line into partisan politics and became a mouthpiece for strongly partisan views.
I am an Alaskan, and I'm so sorry. Please forgive us.
Are you one of the corrupt Alaskans that she booted from public service that was supposed to be protecting the American people? Are you the ex-brother-in-law that beat his wife (her sister) and his chidren (her nephews and nieces) and threatened her father and took his son hunting illegally while he held a public sevant job? I guess almost 90% of the Alaskan people are ignorant and stupid since she has an approval rating of almost 90%. Are you part of the super intelligent 10%? Have you ever heard in America, the majority is suppose to rule? Obama doesn't believe that. He wants to be the sole leader, the Socialist, the Masrxist , and the radical dictator!
I have only one thing to say about Fareed Zakaria's article - he is right on the money!! Of all the choices for VP that McCain could have chosen - he picked the person with the least experience, who comes across as an unintelligible, unqualified individual. Are we, as a nation, ready for the vapidity of Palin?
(continued)
I'm sorry that Obama represents a 21st century way of looking at things instead of a 19th century view - wanting to get ahead of the energy curve by investing in renewable, sustainable, domestic sources of energy instead of just yelling drill, drill, drill - because that's what the short-sighted want to hear. (This Democratic congress just let the Federal ban on off-shore drilling lapse last week, I believe, thus allowing states to make the determination. The oil is just pouring in, isn't it? No instant gratification today boys and girls - maybe in seven - ten years.) Guess what? All of the world's oil will probably be gone in the next 50 years. Should we start looking at and investing in alternatives now and beat the rest of the world to the answers or wait 49 1/2 years? Should our military be the first club out of the bag every time we have a problem with some other government? Talking to people instead of shooting them only seems like a weakness to the weak-minded. McCain is living in the past and Palin is living in her own world. If you want to join her, head for Alaska on November 5 - or go now and beat the rush. Maybe the Obama government will spring for enough short busses to get all of her true believers there - certainly a worthwhile social program.
(continued)
I'm sorry that Obama didn't take some six figure job at a prestigious law firm immediately upon leaving Harvard and opted instead to go to Chicago to work with and help the under-represented and needy. I'm sorry that Obama has proven a command of domestic and international issues in dozens of interviews and several debates (including those in the Democratic primaries) - look folks, no teleprompters. Palin seems to have virtually no understanding of anything outside of Alaska. Obama has been on the national stage for several years as a senator. He knows what is going on in our country and the world. He has actually spoken with world leaders about important issues, not just children's names. He is third in the number of votes missed in this session of the senate - McCain is first. Palin's executive experience is whatever you want to make of it. I, for one, think very little of it as I see her in the same light as our current president. If telling your hand-picked cronies what you want, but not having any concept of what is involved in getting there qualifies as executive experience then I guess that she and GW have it in spades. She fired most of the staff she inherited shortly after becoming mayor - most of them qualified, non-partisan civil servants. She was then left scrambling to fill the vacuum she created by appointing her unqualified friends and acquaintances - although she was forced by her Republican mentors to hire a city manager to actually do her work. She didn't make sure that the land for the sports complex in Wasilla could actually be used for this before erecting it. This remains in the courts. She has a similar problem with the giant natural gas pipeline deal she recently pushed through in Alaska. It looks great on paper until you realize that the tribes in Canada, who own much of the land the pipeline will cross, were never consulted as to their approval or compensation. She shoots from the hip, just like McCain. Gambling on both is twice as much fun!
