I think John McCain taking Sarah Palin as a running mate is a "slap in the face" to the American public. This is one of the most important elections that "I "have ever faced and as an American one of the toughtest economic times since the Stock Market crash. With all that is involved both at home and abroad, you would think that the two men who are looking to lead our country would think long and hard on who would be the best person to help him (and US) lead us through these tough years ahead. ? Sarah Palin -- what an insult....

It is embarassing to me not only as an American but as a woman to see "her" represent herself as a legitimate possibility for the Vice President of the United States. Give me a break! If something happened to McCain (and at his age that is a VERY STRONG POSSIBILYT) she would be running the show!!!!!! What a JOKE!!!! Saturday Night LIve already has enough ammo to last until election date and she just got in...

If she has any loyality to this country and to "WE" the People of United States of America, she should take a minute to watch all her interviews and speeches. After that ask herself a morale and ethical question about her ability to help run this country or stand as a spokesperson for the US of A.. "Step down Sarah and walk away gracefully... this in not the PTA!!! "

Maybe you are a staunch Republican and have an issue with a Black man/woman being voted in as OUR leader ... but isn't it time that we looked at the best PERSON that will help us out of this MESS.

Lets not vote a PARTY , lets vote a PERSON and may our common sense help us decide who that is...

OBAMA/BIDEN .... THE COMMON SENSE CHOICE!

Off subject but Fareed is scary looking.

Fareed, in the interest of fairness ... some Obama quotes that shows he is not ready to be President:
    - "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." (perhaps why you support him so much Mr Zakaria?)
    - "I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go."
    - "It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." (Obama's view of "small-town white America"?)
    - "In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died -- an entire town destroyed." --on a Kansas tornado that killed 12 people
    - My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join me as we try to change it."
    - "To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists."
    - "That???s just how white folks will do you."
    - Call to Islamic prayer is ???one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.??? ... another one I'm sure you agree with.

For every gaff on one side, the other side has a gaffe. The article is about Palin, not McCain or Obama. I am not going to waste my time going tit for tat over the gaffe nonsense. This country may head towards a great depression, and your worried about remarks on each side of the campaign. Perhaps you are very wealthy and could not care less what happens to the average person...

Only an intelligent courageous human being could have written this article. I am saddened and embarrassed as a Amercan for this side show. Utter gibberish indeed. Palin is not intelligent and is globally uninformed and to put her a heart beat away from the US presidency is an insult and disaster . John McCain is not a gambler who has managed his risks, but has always shown psychological signs of being an irrational risk taker who doesn't get it. Palin may represent thousands of ignorant Americans who just don't get it, but in the end the true intelligensia of this country and people who care will rise up and do the right thing, so help us God.

Yeah, that "country first " stuff...sure.

Very well written article that tells it like it is. Scary thing is that is possible that they might win. There are enough rich people, right wing Christians and feminists to continue to steer us towards a very steep cliff. Rome can be seen at the bottom of it.

Why would you include feminists in your list of McCain supporters? Feminists overwhelmingly support Obama as Sarah Palin sets womens' rights back about fifty years. I don't know any educated and informed females who would vote for Sarah Palin - many who would vote for McCain are torn as Sarah is a pathetic example of a 21st century woman.

"Cultural gender bias", reality2? Look Zakaria may or may not be right about Palin but to suggest that he has a problem with her being a woman because of his ethnicity is not only racist and offensive but also, as Jon Stewart would put it, douche-baggery of the Robert Novak kind...!

  • Posted By: KCNewsweek @ 09/29/2008 11:59:09 PM

McCain is right.............country first as long as he is the president. I really liked MCcain for his years as the Maverick..........he seemed to have alot of integrity. His campaign is viciuous, and prone to lying often. He used to be the captain of the Straight Talk Express....it has now digressed into the Stray Talk Express. He says whatever. I hope that McCain looks in the mirror before the election is over, give up the gimmicks, and plotting and just be the Maverick. He wants to be president so bad that he would sell his soul to be president.. As I think about he already has...............

The reason Palin is stumbling in these interviews is that she works for John McCain while not sharing much of his worldview. Take the bailout for example. There is no dout in my mind that she instinctively would love to come out and bash the bailout. She is a free market advocate who does not believe taxpayers should be bailing out the fatcats on Wallstreet. She cannot say this however due to her obligations to her employer. This conflict has put her in the unenviable position of going into an interview and having to field questions without having the freedom to candidly say what she herself believes. This is why she commonly answers questions by saying"John McCain's position is such or such". To see the real Sarah Palin, whe will need to wait until she is unteathered from John McCain. Go back and look at some of her interviews before she was running for VP. She is plenty smart and poised. Right now we are seeing the cheerleader Sarah Palin instead of Sarah Palin the pit bull politician with lipstick.

kristi s, you hit the nail on the head. Anyone who has researched her career in debth will find that she is a brilliant woman with a proven record. Let the left wing whackos have their fun for the moment. The people who will decide this election don't read these left wing propoganda articles like the rest of us political junkies.

      • Posted By: monyxprt @ 09/28/2008 4:15:06 PM

        Darrel,

You're right on. Reading this thread is laughable. Obama supporters commenting on Sarah Palin about her lack of experience. The sad thing is they believe it.

I have a question for all of your Right Wingers. If Sara Palin was Raped and inpregnated by the Likes if scum bag Wille Horton do you think she Keep the baby or Abourt

          • Posted By: Reality2 @ 09/29/2008 11:48:51 PM

Sarah Palin would have shot Willie before he shoots. Next!

      • Posted By: nannycee @ 09/29/2008 1:30:44 PM

Um, you read it and responded so what does that say about you?

        A proven record of what?

    • Posted By: madisonhack @ 09/27/2008 10:00:22 PM

How exactly can she be untethered from John McCain? And by the way, after the election, should the two of them win (God help us) I will be their damned employer.

      • Posted By: DrBB @ 09/28/2008 12:52:07 PM

"She is a free market advocate who does not believe taxpayers should be bailing out the fatcats on Wallstreet."

Other than the fact that this year alone she proposed 31 earmarks totaling $197 million ??? more, per person, than any other state. Alaska RUNS on earmarks. Just ask Palin's good buddy Ted Stevens (now under indictment).

        The stupid--it burns!

    • Posted By: Caldwell Young @ 09/27/2008 4:55:17 PM

Hey, this is a pretty good defense!

Now, when exactly is it that Sarah Palin is "untethered" from John McCain? Oh, wait a minute... what exactly are you seeking here? Should someone call the Secret Service? Kind of sinister, you are.

  • Posted By: terrig55 @ 09/29/2008 11:47:56 PM

I feel that John McCain doesn't give the American citizens any credit by picking Sarah Palin for his running mate. She had no clue about what is going on and after she gets done talking, your left scratching your head trying to figure out what she just said. She is a likeable person but not for such a high office. If something happened to McCain, she would be running our Country. Not GOOD!!! Just read her interviews and they just don't make any sense. I have more knowledge than she does of foreign affairs.and that is not very much. I don't think she ever reads a newspaper or watches the news. Heaven help us if she becomes our VP.

Liz: But Roosevelt wasn't the president in 1929 per Biden. He was elected in November of 1933 and Roosevelt started the WRA.

Zakaria spoke too soon. Obama and McCain dodged the question too when they were asked by Jim Lehrer about the bailout during the presidential debate. The fact of the matter is that none of the candidates wanted to take a position on the bailout plan before Monday! They all preferred to stick to their talking points. For Zakaria to single out Palin for unpreparedness instead of ascribing it to typical politicians dodging question, it speaks volumes about Zakaria's own cultural gender bias.

the choice of palin was three fold
firstly, to sure up the conservative base
    secondly, she is female
thirdly and most importantly, she has no relevant experience.

    the reasons

the republicans wanted an easy target to dangle in front of obama hoping he would jump all over it, and tear it to pieces so they could turn around and paint him as sexist, elite, god hating and most of all hypocritical on the experience issue. All forms of media have up until recently been pulling their hair out wondering why obama hasnt fought back against republican lies. We can now all see the wisdom of Obama and the dems strategy of ignoring the irrelevant and giving it enough rope to finish itself off.

The Democrat party has to agree that a governor of a small state would ???never??? make a great President. i.e. Gov Clinton. What foreign policy experience did Bill have when he arrived in Washington? I am amazed that the party of "open-minded" thinking and "looking out for minorities" would attack Gov, Palin so harshly.

Comparing a Rhodes Scholar to Palin is like saying that I could be president because I am likeable. The matter before us is the Peter Principle. And Palin' has been struck by that principle. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle

BTW George Will, David Frum, David Brooks and Kathleen Parker, who happen to be on the right side of the spectrum also expressed the same concern as Zakaria.

      • Posted By: 003abcd @ 09/29/2008 2:28:28 PM

A Rhodes Scholar with the moral compass of a 12 year old boy. I've never been so proud of our country as I was during his presidency. Thank you for reminding me.

        • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 4:05:19 PM

Me too. I was definitely proud of the peace and prosperity Clinton brought.

Yes, I can see why you would support someone who is morally bankrupt for the office of the Presidency. Who are you voting for again?

            • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 11:24:40 PM

Sorry. You are wrong. I'm not voting for McCain.

Hey JT your missing the point of Zakaria's article. He isn't questioning Sara Palin's ability to lead based on her experience he's questioning her fundamental UNDERSTANDING of the issues. She simply does not understand the questions that are being asked of her in the Couric interview and thats blatently obvious. He's saying that its ok to not agree with someone based on where they stand on certain issues BUT what about when the person doesn't even comprehend what the "issue" being discussed is?? Thats frightening when you consider that Palin is a Vice Presidential candidate.
Honestly if anyone reads a transcript of this interview or any of the three Palin interviews it is truly disturbing to realize how unqualified she really is...her words are in fact utter nonsense and "gibberish" as Zakaria put it. They literally make no sense...the point is not that he or I or anyone disagrees with her on where she stands on these issues the fact is that she DOES NOT even understand or comprehend what is being asked of her.

Um, cholm014, check your facts - Roosevelt was indeed president for several years of the Great Depression. Timeline was Black Thursday in 1929, Roosevelt took office 1933, Great Depression lasted roughly until WWII.

For those who are posting responses defending Palin's interview, It shocks me that you compare Obama to Palin. I know you have your obvious bias and I have mine, but seriously. You have to ask yourself this: Why did John Mccain pick Sarah Palin. All bias aside. Why did he pick her? Because of her Foreign Policy experience? Because of her knowledge of economics? You can quote the record of Obama all day long, but at the end of the day - he has something that Sarah Palin does not have, nor will she have if she by the time some stroke of misfortune promotes her to the position of President of the United States. For Mccain to ignore this IS reckless and obviously has a motive other than the best interest of our country.
