Um, cholm014, check your facts - Roosevelt was indeed president for several years of the Great Depression. Timeline was Black Thursday in 1929, Roosevelt took office 1933, Great Depression lasted roughly until WWII.

For those who are posting responses defending Palin's interview, It shocks me that you compare Obama to Palin. I know you have your obvious bias and I have mine, but seriously. You have to ask yourself this: Why did John Mccain pick Sarah Palin. All bias aside. Why did he pick her? Because of her Foreign Policy experience? Because of her knowledge of economics? You can quote the record of Obama all day long, but at the end of the day - he has something that Sarah Palin does not have, nor will she have if she by the time some stroke of misfortune promotes her to the position of President of the United States. For Mccain to ignore this IS reckless and obviously has a motive other than the best interest of our country.
This article so spot on. Sarah Palin's incompetence is terrifying. When mental options are few, violence as a 'solution' comes easily. Given the US arsenal, this is a prospect that leaves one shivering. Sarah, if you are who you say you are, step down and do all a favor. ( Australia )
Whenever someone criticizes an article about Sarah Palin and her lack of qualifications to be president, he/she always sidesteps the issue with talk of Democratic failures in government. Both Republicans and Democrats have failed in local and national government. The point that is being made is that Sarah Palin doesn't even have the basic qualifications to be considered for the role that has continued to fail Americans. I'm actually shocked that a governor is so ignorant about domestic and foreign issues. With such broad ignorance, she would likely never be a good presidential or vice presidential candidate. When people talk of Sarah Palin and her lack of knowledge about world affairs, it has nothing to do with Democratic or Republican failures in government. It's about the danger of putting an uneducated and uninformed person in the most powerful position in government. Politics aside, it would be a disaster for the whole country.
I see we jump on every comment Gov Palin has made. How about Biden in comparison? How can you spend years in Government and not know that Roosevelt was not president during the depression and that TV was not around in 1929. Why are we talking about that though? Im sure Biden and Palin are very intelligent people, Lets look at the important things, where do they stand on the issues? where do you stand on the issues? vote accordingly. Gov Palin is against abortion, pro gun, pro drilling, pro financial conservatism. She also supports the war effort (we are at war remember?). Democrats are scared to death of Palin and that is why she is being attacked. She is pro family values, and is fiscally conservative. Look at where Biden stands on these issues and you will see a stark contrast. So if you are bad mouthing Palin on here vs Biden, you are bad mouthing where she stands on the issues. Most Americans are part of traditional families with traditional values. They are going to vote McCain - Palin in overwhelmingly.
This is a new low for the liars at Newsweak. This is a disgustng rag. Newsweak lies are "un-patriotic", NOT Palin or McCain.
There will be a reckoning coming for lying, slimeing rags like Newsweak.
As a person who avoids media and who only glanced at www.newsweek.com after the good rejection of a bailout on 29 September, I was amazed at the comments on the article "Palin is Ready? Please." by Fareed Zakaria.
First, if Mr. Zakaria (who I am confident never hears these comments) believes that John McCain was "fundamentally irresponsible" for selecting Sarah Palin who is "utterly unqualified to be Vice-President", then he should be very happy Sarah Palin was selected and Barack Obama will have a far higher chance of winning the election. (Here, I am assuming that Mr. Zakaria either truly believes that Obama is qualified to be President or that Mr. Zakaria is receiving financial rewards from Newsweek and/or Obama for the words he shares.)
Second, I will agree that Obama does have more experience than Paliln in one area We can thank Obama for helping to cause the recent collapse of our economy as, in 2005, he joined Chris Dodd and John Kerry in accepting large political contributions from the two mortgage bankers in exchange for keeping regulators off of their backs which, in turn, led people to continue hearing "No money down" when looking for a house and led people to continue taking out loans which they would never be paying back.
Third, I will admit that the regulation of the two banks was requested of the Congress by President George W. Bush only about fifteen times between 2002 and 2008 (always being declined by Congress). President Bush should have clearly informed all Americans who do not watch the Federal Government constantly how Dodd, Kerry, Obama and the majority in the Congress was against this regulation of the two mortgage bankers and was simply bowing down to these bankers and their personal desires.
Fourth, some comments implied that Christians cannot think. A person who selects a nominee based on only one item (e.g., abortion) is not selecting wisely. A person who selects Obama because his words excite them even though they are often counter to his record is not selecting wisely. And pastors are not allowed to tell members of the congregation who or what to vote for and continue avoiding some taxes that are offered to non-profit orgainizations and churches. Like myself, many who are truly Christian (and not just cliaiming this) are Independent and vote for a person (or two-person ticket) and not for a political party. A large percentage of us are conservative and not "liberal" (using the most common definition of the term today) and this leads most votes that we cast to those who are Republican.
Finally, some Americans believe that it is better for the government to be larger and to have more control over the citizens of the United States. Others believe, like those who wrote and signed the Constitution, that it is better for the government to be smaller and to have less control over the citizens of the United States.
Thank you Fareed Zakaria for having the courage to speak up and state the obvious. Any other election year it would have been easy to gloss over her glaring ignorance-- but now with the sad state of affairs in our country we need as many intelligent people as we can get. Sadly, Sarah Palin is not one of the intelligent ones.
Palin is just wonderful!! Way better than Biden. The people have spoken about Biden and both times they have said NO we DO NOT want you in the Whitehouse. Not even a heartbeat away. Palin is a great American and I think Bidens opinion that Americans paying more taxes is patriotic is totally of base.
No one likes paying more taxes, especially if the money is being wasted. However, if it is being used to improve our living condition, (good roads, safe medicine, safe food, etc) some one has to pay for it. There is no such thing as a free lunch. If you think there is such thing as a very lunch, you also think there are trees that talk, and floors that dance.
really...there are a lot of people in this country uses the freedom and opportunity that this country provides to make a lot of money, but it is time to pay their taxes, the rather hide behind their lawyers to not pay taxes...do you still think they are patriotic.
My point is very simple. Paying taxes has nothing to do with being "patriotic" it has to do with following the law. And I know this is off point but if any of you think there will be any money left for any tax cuts or health care or new gov. programs if we give 700,000,000,000 away to the banking crooks you are mistaken. And this happened under the Democrats in congress.
I am INSULTED to think that this woman could represent me, but I am HORRIFIED to think that she could represent our country. OMG what would the rest of the world think once they heard her speak on important issues to any foreign dignatary? We would be the "LAUGHING STOCK" of the world. And for that reason, I am LIVID that McCain could do this to us! My country means too much to me to think that along with hating us for our arrogant pre-emptive war in Iraq, they would also be laughing in our faces to think that this FARCE of a VP or, God forbid our POTUS absolutely cannot construct a sentence and that whatever she utters makes positively NO SENSE!
So for this reason, John McCain should NEVER be allowed to make another decision for our country [vote him out of office in AZ] because in making this decision for which he had many more choices of very qualified people, he made the WRONG CHOICE [bad and questionable judgment] and has jeopardized our country in the eyes of the global world. He should be ASHAMED of himself because with this choice he has put us in HARMS WAY in every conceivable comcept of the word.
I say, "THANKS, BUT NO THANKS FOR THIS BRIDGE TO DISPAIR, DANGER AND DISASTER"! I hope the Alaskan people will take her back!
We don't want her back...She has dropped 14% points in approval in Alaska in 2 weeks. Most of the fools who voted her in did so because she is pro-life and she thinks homosexuality is a choice. She has never been questioned like this. This is the small time up here, America... By the time this is over, no one will want her.
OK, lets talk ashamed - Barack Hussein Obama, hater of the US and member of Bill Ayers club to blow up America - He is not BLACK he is 5% black, 45% Arab and 50% white. For all of you cracker haters you had better wake up and see that you are backing an Arabic White American with no experience and very little intelligence - sad story for you all - there are some very intelligent and upstanding African Americans, Barack Hussein Obama is NOT one of them.
5% black? how did you come up with that equation genius? does that mean his great-great-great-great....grandmother/father's uncles friend's brother was black? i dont get your logic or relevance.
you are a moron
I was surprised when she made it to the end of the Republican National Convention! Now that the "surge" over her candidacy is over, she is just an embarassment. I would not be surprised if she pulled out before the election.
Most Americans are conservative christians that believe in Jesus, so in this way Gov Palin is like most Americans. Liberal left wing atheist dont want anyone to know that, but they work for Satan anyway. As far as the Alaska border thing, Air security for American air space was provided during the cold war by NORAD, but since 9-11 and the GWOT, the Air National Guard has taken over this responsibility. Gov Palin is the Commander in Chief of the Alaska Air National Guard. Sen Obama is a christian too, and like Gov Palin, his church has some extreme views as well. The difference is that Gov Palin's church is not anti-American. I think Gov Palin is an exceptional choice for Vice President and that is why the liberal bias media is attacking her.
Governor Palin is not like most American. It is a sad state of affair when people with eyes can not see. It is not her religion that is being judged. It is her ignorance of national and international affairs. People fail for lack of knowledge. Vice- president on the United States is not an on the job training course. There is even doubt whether she is even smart enough to get. If she were wise, should would have turn Mr. McCain down when the vice-presidence was offered. I wonder what is on her agenda. This woman secares the hell out of me. I am a fundamentalist christian, and I would never vote for someone who is ignorante.
The selection of Palin makes me ill. Where in the hell is the wisdom, insight and intelligence for this kind of pick? Well, why be surprised. We put the terminator and a wrestler in high office, so why not some chatty cathy doll who's incapable of an independent thought. Journalism degree??????????? And there's no shame in advertising that? It's like the college football players who have their major flashed on the screen: Recreational management. Same thing. We don't express outrage anymore in this country for anything. And if you support Palin as a potential VP you are so sheltered, so ignorant of what's happening around you. This is not some game or popularity contest. It's our future, our very survival could depend on her judgement. And don't forget, she did not know what the Bush Doctrine was. Isn't that horrifying? I have not spent one day as a politician in any kind of office but I know what the Bush Dpctrine is. Is it too much to ask that a potential VP would know this also? Does she know what the Marshall plan was. The Magna Carta? The treaty of Versailles? The 38th parallel? The Cuban Missile crisis? This woman is a farce. A charlatan. We've become a nation of quick fix, sexy smiles, popularity and sound bites. My mother is a better pick than Palin. And she's 85 yeasr old.
Sir, your clarity and your analytical ability are genius! Thank you!

Comment: Victory in Iraq involves a secure country where democracy grows, in this enviroment oil production will triple putting more oil on the market, that means less cost at the pump and everywhere else for Americans.
What?
Americans and the rest of the world are badly addicted to oil. If a crack addict was complaining about the cost of drugs at the dealer, would you also recommend liberating a country, say afghanistan, to gain control of poppy fields so we could triple production and get some cost relief for those addicts that are hurting at home?
guess what? oil price relates to supply and demand, and since american can't do squat with 3% of the worlds supply, how about working on the 25% u.s. global demand side of the equation?
bite the bullet and end the dependancy, then price at the pump will become irrelevant one day.
Please, please let Owen Bennett Jones of the BBC interview Sarah....
Zakaria. While the reasonable can disagree with the Palin pick [which I am clearly uncomfortable with myself],your attack on the patriotism of McCain is disgusting and weak, making you a partisan provacateur. And a mere hack.
Bad enough that the smears and lies leveled at Palin [i.e. ''the rape kit'',''The AIP'',''the banned book list'',the ''downs syndrome child -as -daughters''] are masterpiece works of pure McCarthyism that you are simply not applying to Biden when facts and truth, rather than lies and innuendo, printed and aired by your media peers in ''respected journalism, are allowed to remain shelved and ignored in order to get your guy in.
This is at the bottom of the media offensive now playing out against Palin. Do not hand me this garbage Zack. Especially to one who well recalled other veeps in other times who were viewed to be even more dangerous than a Palin. The imperial Cheney. The lackluster Quayle. The diffident Mondale. The shifty Agnew, the hopeful and naive Humphrey. We have been there before. Where we have not been is to see the rise of a frankly partisan press, who acts as the press secretary to the person they wish to see elected, and will speak their own forms of lies and ''gibberish''in order to get him or her there. Palin will probably go. Yet you who are a disservice to your nations news media will remain .Mores the pity.
Patriotism isn't just about going to war wrapped in a flag. It's also about respecting the country enough not to leave it in the hands of an incompetent. Bush made an art out of promoting ill-qualified cronies to positions of power. McCain continuing this practice with his VP pick is definitely not "country first".
As I've said before, McCain's pick is patriotic in the sense that it makes this race even more cut and dry with the ultimate result in the current corrupt regime and its party will go down in defeat.
Johnsonium and MotorcycleRacer....you the Guys who make a lot of sense in this commentary! Your the kind of American guys the world loves....Rock on!
CastleRock - Are you smarter than a 5th grader???
WOW !!! This is UNBELIEVABLE! I suppose the real answer is to elect a VERY corrupt, inexperienced, lying, flip flopping, UNPATRIOTIC, racist, radical, 2 year Senator from the corrupt gutter politics state of Illinois. You would have to be an EXTREMIST LIBERAL to even consider such a horrifically dangerous decision. How reckless that would be. The Democrats voted in legislation to allow anyone to buy a home, now we have a disaster. Signed in by Clinton, check the facts folks you might be surprised!Enter Your Comment
Wow. You managed to get all of the discredited attacks on Obama in within one breath. You must be a wingnut troll superhero.
Johnsonium, I am, and you just voted for me.
Most Americans are conservative christians, so in that respect Gov Palin is in the majority. Also, the Air National Guard since 9/11 has been given the task of air defense of our borders. Gov Palin is the Commander in Chief of the Alaska Air National Guard, which provides the aircraft which go up and meet Russian aircraft nearing the Alaska border. That is what she meant in her statement. This is a task that was accomplished by NORAD during the cold war, but because of the GWOT op tempo was transferred to the Guard.
I think you are giving your Christian RIGHT racist, bigots way too much cedit. Every time I hear about this Christian right I can always look around and see something extremely anti-christian, like war, medical care being denied to families, kids. People living in poverty and with so many of these "christians" around you would think they would take on a more positive role LIKE HELPING THOSE IN NEED!! Not the republican way though is it?? I wish you all would just be honest with the rest of the world and admit you don't like ANYONE DIFFERENT THAN YOU !! GO OBAMA O8/12..
Right on the money! "God" save us from the religious right. In all my years, the most hypocritical, racist, bigoted and intolerantpeople are those that wear their faith on their sleeve. The so called religious rite love the acronym WWJD, what would jesus do. Well I know one thing, he'd kick the religious right right in the ass and tell them all to straighten the hell up and quit giving religion a bad name.
Palin is the nightmare scenario. A totally uninformed, low educated, icon of hockey moms ( oh she is so cute, I wish I was her!). And that's who could very well be our president under the current situation. For that reason alone, McCain cannot be allowed to win this election. For if he does win , and she would someday be the president, then the position of president becomes nothing more than a figurehead. Liek the queen of England. No relevance, no influence.
Thank you Fareed Zakaria, for clearly stating what I've been thinking for weeks!!!
