I agree that under traditional scrutiny she is unqualified. I am an independent who will probably vote for Obama (also not qualified to be President), but I am intriqued by Palin. I'm intriqued because we are in a huge mess in every measurable area yet we've had 'qualified people' making decisions. How about someone who might not know the term 'The Bush Doctrine', but knows enough to say, 'maybe we should only invade a country if it poses a direct and immediate threat to the US'. The press hasn't pressed Obama on specifics because he's 'articulate and fresh', but doesn't have a record of making hard decisions nor dealing with real issues. We don't have a good choice at the top of the ticket this year especially given the dire state of the US, but I'm encouraged that a little common sense, experience more like the common man and a women's innate smarts may make her the perfect VP candidate!

How in the world do you Mr. Fareed have the right to bash Sarah Palin. You are not a born american. I don't want to hear what you have to say. Why do you people keep pushing Obama down my throat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want a true AMERICAN to be president!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Obama couldn't even remember who he was talking during the debate---Tom or Jim Hello what don't you discuss that.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what are you trying to say...my family moved here 20 years ago, I was not born here, but I would not call anywhere else home...I pay my taxes too...so by your standards...whom may I ask is truely American? Mc Same? Please!!!! After what we saw about Sarah Palin...at least have the decency to admit that she is just not ready to be V.P. Stop being a sell out to a party...A true American is admitting to our mistakes that we chose the wrong person in the white house 8 years ago, and not make the same mistakes again...

"You are not a born american. I don't want to hear what you have to say"... LOL.. can handle the truth, uh?

This has to be one of the most idiotic comments ever, but is understandable coming from an ultra right-winged conservative.

"This is nonsense???a vapid emptying out of every catchphrase about economics that came into her head."

Weird you say this about Sarah Palin. I say the same thing every time Barack Obama gives a speech.

McCain,,,, should be ashamed very ashamed for using this women this way, she thinks she's been chosen
By God thru McCain to do Gods wil it is wrong for McCain to lead this women on this way, and for all of you out there who think that it is great for her to be put in this position should be ashamed as well.I understand we all want someone like ourselves to look up to. hopes of being in her place some day,but as Christians you know this is wrong and you should not be sending your sheep Sara out to the wolf McCain ....................
I'm sure she is very good at her day job, but not for this job.......................

    • Posted By: reggie92 @ 09/29/2008 7:59:05 PM

I think Palin is going to be one of the best Vice Presidents ever. She is going to show that a strong conservative woman CAN be a great leader. I know this is hard for all of you name calling libs to swollow but it is going to happen.

  • Posted By: niztim @ 09/29/2008 5:24:12 PM

Bravo! Whoever gave Palin's name to McCain and who ever "vetted" her and then recommended her to him, should be fired if they haven't already. This election is serious and McCain's choice of Palin is a mockery. forget years of experience - she does not have the KNOWLEDGE. She is an attractive cheerleader for him and that is it. Don't continue to insult the American public and American women with this know-nothing. She should drop out. Get some qualified. And face it -- Obama is going to win.

As everyone knows Obama had to talk to Jim Lehrer because McCain wouldn't look at him! That's who the Jim was and the other 'Tom' Obama was referring to was Tom Colburne...seems you weren't following attentatively!

Fareed and Thomas Friedman are two of the most brilliant minds that we see today. They are brilliant because they view politics on a global scale. We are living in an interdependent world and we need people who understand that. Palin clearly lacks experience and knowledge to run for VP. I could see that many republicans don't want to admit that very fact since she is on the ticket for your party, but think about that very fact for a sec.

  • Posted By: librehombre @ 09/29/2008 7:53:05 PM

One expert estimates that at least 50 congressmen are dominionists. It would be interesting to find out who they are (odds are they are from the Southern wing of the Republican party) and then compare their names to the way the house voted today. These fellow citizens are not interested in what happens to the United States. They are focused on the second coming of Jesus and are willing to hasten his arrival. If they could collapse the economy of the world and create chaos that perfectly fits their plans. This is tribulation stuff, Palin is an expert on the subject. She is a traitor and so are her religious allies that put her up for office.

  • Posted By: marcharino @ 09/29/2008 4:12:42 PM

It is ironic that you apply purdah to confining Palin to home! Anyway, the loaded question to Palin from Couric should have been, ???Isn???t it better to spend $700 billion helping bail-out the otherwise credit unworthy and indebted middle-class families who recklessly borrowed from even more reckless mortgage lending banks???? The simple answer from Palin should have been ???No, I can???t imagine taxpayers, that can???t even afford their monthly gas and groceries, funding a ???humongous??? bailout that the financial institutions were instrumental in creating!

    • Posted By: deschl @ 09/29/2008 7:50:59 PM

my daughter could have answered that question, it's called current events, as she would say "duh"

  • Posted By: DebChic @ 09/29/2008 4:15:35 PM

If I were Sarah Palin, I would see if Tina Fey was available Thursday evening.

    • Posted By: deschl @ 09/29/2008 7:48:53 PM

lmao that was a good one, now you know she is gonna be schooled and drilled the next couple of days by the Rovian school of politics and they are smart guys they know how to rev up the uneducated in our populace, of which apparantly there are quite a few, so dont write her off yet, just stay informed.

    • Posted By: kshortSD @ 09/29/2008 5:30:40 PM

      that's awesome...

  • Posted By: Pat1987 @ 09/29/2008 1:38:52 PM

Finally! Someone honesy enough to admit it, and not just speculate about it. Those who continue to support Palin even after she has proven herself to be completely unqualified for this position, are proving that their party loyalties are infinitely more important to them than what is best for their country on a whole. This is the most glaring example of McCain's desperation to win at all costs, even the cost of putting a novice in the second highest office (And possibly the highest office) in America. Heaven help us all if McCain/Palin wins.

    • Posted By: 003abcd @ 09/29/2008 1:49:21 PM

Did you say "win at all costs"? Would this also fit under that category: Abandoning your church of 25 years because it didn't fit your political agenda? What do you think?

      • Posted By: kshortSD @ 09/29/2008 3:08:49 PM

Sure, like which church you attend really matters if you're president. Come on! We're talking about a woman who can't answer a simply question about foreign policy OR our economic crisis and she is very close to being elected to the 2nd highest position in our country! NOT a good comparison...

        • Posted By: 003abcd @ 09/29/2008 4:33:20 PM

My concern isn't about which church he attends...it speaks to his character (again, or lack thereof) that as soon as his road to the presidency is impeded by a scandal at the church he has attended for 25 years (let me say it again, 25 years!), he drops it like a hot potato!

          • Posted By: lee115678 @ 09/29/2008 7:44:52 PM

If you have followed the news, you would have known that it was a very trying time for Obama and his family to leave his church. Your example is " poor ' and inexcusable. Please stick to the issues.
            Obama 08!

          • Posted By: Castle Rock @ 09/29/2008 5:26:01 PM

Yes, I agree, this is all about credibility and integrity. It is also very much about good solid judgement, and to me this shows 25 years of bad judgement. Not to mention, William Ayers, terrorist. How can we afford to take a chance on this guy, there are way to many questions.

  • Posted By: librehombre @ 09/29/2008 7:39:32 PM

But Fareed, John McCain did not chose Sarah. The Council for National Policy chose her. These are the same dominionist Christians that elevated George Bush to the Presidency. Palin perfectly fits into their designs to take over the country and create a theonomy. I know this sounds like crazy conspiracy stuff, but these people are indeed crazy, crazy any way you look at them and their treachery.. What they want is a crisis and then they can move in and declare martial law. Hummm -- crisis??

  • Posted By: janet12345 @ 09/29/2008 4:13:15 PM

Palin is not only dangerously ignorant of any relevant facts or sorely lacking in judgment. Check out this website - in depth article by someone who knows her personally, very well. Real eye-opener. If she was just dumb, she could learn. But she's rigid, selfish, uncritical, and uncurious. This woman actually thinks she's qualified to be VP. Astonishing. Please reread the Anne Kilkenny letter. Ms. Kilkenny is a Wasilla resident who has known (not been friends with) Sarah Palin since Sarah was a young women in Wasilla. Ms. Kilkenny was trying to present an even handed, first person view of Sarah Palin to friends who asked her what she knew about this new arrival when she burst on the national scene just before the Republican National Convention. If you read the letter carefully I think you will see that Ms. Kilkenny acknowledges Sarah Palin's strengths without endorsing her in any way.

Also, many American's have commented on the fact that Alaskan's refer to the governor by her first name. This is one of the differences in Alaska. As long as I have lived up here (over 40 years), everyone refers to most of our polititians by their first name, whether we agree with them or not. It's just part of the casual culture of Alaska.

BTW - I'm a republican who did not vote for Sarah Palin two years ago.

    What a horrible article....

It is a shame in the face of an economic crisis, people like you actually get paid to produce this trash.

    • Posted By: deschl @ 09/29/2008 7:33:17 PM

Horrible article, it is true, what part are you missing, when you thrust your self into the political scene you should be able to answer a simple question, Katie appeared to be smarter than her and she aint running for the second highest office in the land. I could have come up with a better answer than that.

Did you know conservative commentators George Will, David Frum, and David Brooks and Kathleen Parker have asked her to step down too? Zakaria is now joined in the chorus of concern. I think that everyone should be taking a close look and think about one thing. Do you think based upon her interviews, that you can look at someone in their eye and say, I think Palin is presidential, and can take over in a moments notice?

And one other note, if Palin did step down, she would not be the first one either. Think Spiro Agnew and Thomas Eagleton in modern times. Sure saving face is ideal, however, under these circumstances, is it better to save face, or think of the good of our country. And this my fellow bloggers is coming from an Independent who would not have hestitated to vote for McCain in 2000.

  • Posted By: hdettwyler @ 09/29/2008 7:31:48 PM

Thank you. It is about time that someone held McCain responsible for this utterly irresponsible choice of his. It is not her fault that she is not ready to be VP, it is his fault for making a political decision that potentially could put our country at risk. Shame on you John McCain and thank you, Mr. Zakaria, for so eloquently and clearly pointing this out.

  • Posted By: Castle Rock @ 09/29/2008 3:46:47 PM

WOW !!! This is UNBELIEVABLE! I suppose the real answer is to elect a VERY corrupt, inexperienced, lying, flip flopping, UNPATRIOTIC, racist, radical, 2 year Senator from the corrupt gutter politics state of Illinois. You would have to be an EXTREMIST LIBERAL to even consider such a horrifically dangerous decision. How reckless that would be. The Democrats voted in legislation to allow anyone to buy a home, now we have a disaster. Signed in by Clinton, check the facts folks you might be surprised!

Sorry Joe, wrong president at a time before we had TV, what a joke that was, I laughed till I cried, mainly becouse I feel soooo sorry for Obama/Biden, what a pair, Mr. NO Experience and Mr. I DON"T Know What I am Talking About. • Posted By: nerdwaves @ 09/29/2008 7:25:27 PM

This is who you want potentially running the country? PALIN:That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the???it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that."

      ARE YOU HIGH?

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/29/2008 5:17:32 PM

You see, there are people who tend to make lots of inexcusible gaffes, (including myself) are thinking way further ahead then their mouth speaks. It is a very difficult habit to break. And usually this condition is with people who are extremely smart. Biden is Biden, and we can all agree he makes some of the stupidist gaffes. However he is not running for President and the article is not about him. But to compare Biden to Palin is a stretch. Palin is not even close to being in the same league as Biden. It is called the Peter Principle.

  • Posted By: RolandoLewis @ 09/29/2008 4:17:17 PM

Please use an ounce of sense when you post things on the internet. I can't stress this enough. There are people who keep trying to compare Senator Obama to Governor Palin. THERE IS NO COMPARISON! Senator Obama is a graduate of Columbia and Harvard University. Senator Obama was the president of Harvard???s Law review. Governor Palin bounced around from one college to another, and then finally landed a job as a News Anchor in Alaska. Alaska has a population of roughly 9,000, so it's a pretty small place. She got involved in politics by joining an aerobics class. That's where she got familiar with the mothers who eventually voted her into office. I'm an African American man. If Senator Obama displayed the lack of knowledge Governor Palin displays, I wouldn't vote for him either. It's not that anyone is picking on her, she just doesn't know. It's not about Democrat or Republican, it's about making a choice that will benefit us in years to come. I would have thought that with the past eight years being so disastrous people would have wised up, but I guess we live in a period of time where ignorance is truly bliss.

    • Posted By: mamamia12 @ 09/29/2008 6:24:34 PM

Why are you comparing Obama who is running for President to Palin who is on as Vice President. The economy is in trouble partly because of CLINTON who passed a bill to allow anyone get a loan with or without good credit, with or without citizenship. Obama wants to raise taxes on those who earn $42,000 or less each year. -- You guys are so worried about a female becoming Vice President, you lost sight of who is running. I say MCCAIN/PALIN all the way!!

      • Posted By: nerdwaves @ 09/29/2008 7:23:28 PM

If you make less than $250K a year your taxes are going down if Obama gets in. Why all you NASCAR-lovin' gun-toting Republicans aren't jumping for joy is totally beyond me.

    • Posted By: Montana450815 @ 09/29/2008 7:05:28 PM

I must correct you on a couple of things. Palin was mayor of Wasilla, AK which has a population of around 7,000-8,000. Alaska itself has somewhere around 600,000-700,000 residents. However she was elected to the office of governor with only 114,737 votes. I find it interesting that conservativess would vote for someone that less than 115,000 had selecteds to be their govenor. I agree she is in no way ready to serve as VP, or, God forbid, as president. I would hope she would drop out, but I'm not holding my breath.

    • Posted By: Ron Paul For Pope @ 09/29/2008 5:26:23 PM

      RolandoLewis -

I agree with everything you said, except that ignorance is bliss. From now on, those who are ignorant will be eaten alive.

People who vote for Palin will wish they hadn't. They'll wish they'd voted for someone who could have saved them from the imminent raging apocalypse. They'll wish they'd voted for someone who can THINK.

Excellent article Fareed! I think that Tina Fey would make a smarter VP than "Airhead" Palin. I can't wait for Thursday's debates as we all get to watch "Sinner" Sarah make a total fool of herself and there'll be no editing to cover up the dumb answers she's bound to give. I'm still waiting for her to blink and chicken out somehow, maybe she'll hear her baby calling. I can't wait to hear her wax clueless on the economy some more and tell us how Putin is buzzing her airspace, yeah there's enough airspace between her ears to fly a whole fleet of Russian bombers around in.

But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the???it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track.
