I guess modern journalism is completely devoid of impartiality now. I mean maybe she is a good candidate or not is one thing...but this writer attempts to envision her as a ticking timebomb. Please grow up. this type of extremism and childishness is the root cause of many of our current problems.

    • Posted By: D2or3 @ 09/29/2008 1:16:36 PM

I think a "ticking time bomb" is being KIND! Palin is a loony tune, and shame on any of your for sticking up for her. I guess YOU ALL want us to be a laughing stock, too, not to mention Palin's pro-DEATH platform to kill animals, kill women's rights, kill the environment, and kill endangered species.

Even with all this sexism and the msm trying thier best to take Palin out and attack her family, this race is still too close to call. The dems are freaking out! The dems can't get over the fact that Palin is more prepared than Obama to be President if needed. Now will the msm cover Obama gardens in Chicago? Will "CHANGE" be in the form of good ol Chicago style politics or Soviet style communism? Obama promises whatever he thinks will get him elected then breaks his promises (i.e. " I will work tirelessly to raise the 1.1 million to finish this park", " I will take public financing for this election", " thats not the reverend Wright I knew", " thats not the Bill Ayers I knew", "Thats not the Tony Rezko I knew". Sounds like the typical politician, but maybe I'll just vote present.

You stop being partisan and simply reason for the best of this nation. You cannot compare Palin to Obama in any way. Ant ist just clear even to a todler that palin cannot lead this country in any way should the unexpected happen.

      • Posted By: cubs @ 09/29/2008 10:09:13 AM

Just for the record I am an Independent and not thrilled with any of the candidates. But I have never seen the msm in the tank for a candidate like they are for Obama.

        • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 1:15:31 PM

Hardly. The press follows the facts and trends. Right now, they are favoring Obama.

      • Posted By: portacartas @ 09/29/2008 10:09:40 AM

"unexpected happen" is more like "likely will happen." McCain looked like death warmed over with an ax to grind during the debate. He cannot handle stress and I am surprised he is still around. He is an angry disgusting politician who uses every form of deceit that only a blinded fool could believe.

      • Posted By: cubs @ 09/29/2008 10:05:20 AM

My point exactly. What has Obama done? Break a few promises?

And Sarah Palin was picked because she's a woman and womens votes are more important than anything right now. Also, I'm an independent and I don't believe for a second the Dems are really afraid. Giving McCain and Palin enough rope, they will hang themselves and Dems won't have toi do a thing.

  • Posted By: 7Star @ 09/29/2008 1:15:24 PM

Apparently "both journalistic integrity and intelligence" are now dependent on political affiliation. Interesting...i realise this is not a general news column and is an editorial piece but I would still appreciate less regurgitation of the common anti-this and that rhetoric I see from both sides. What ever happened to basic issues. Do you think Mccains proposal with cause jobs to move out of the country....will Obama's propasal cost you thousands in capital gain next year. For me the answer seems to be both on both fronts.

  • Posted By: 003abcd @ 09/29/2008 10:04:14 AM

Let me guess...another politically slanted (and certainly not a veiled attempt) article solely intended to support Obama. When will we be able to find objective commentary on both candidates? Experience? Is that what is important? Then, please, someone explain to me how being President of the Harvard Law Review is qualification enough to be President of the United States?

    • Posted By: meneither123 @ 09/29/2008 10:16:58 AM

Because Obama was at the top of all of his classes and McCain barely squeezed out a diploma. Ignorance is NOT bliss especially for Palin and McCain right noiw

      • Posted By: xanabella @ 09/29/2008 10:22:11 AM

Not seeing the difference between a Harvard education and a BA from the U of Idaho is the kind of blind ignorance I've come to expect from neo-con zealots.

        • Posted By: cubs @ 09/29/2008 10:37:37 AM

Didn't Bush go to Harvard? How did that work out? If you drink any parties Kool-aid you are asking for trouble. I would also suggest you get your nose checked, it seems to get in the way while you are looking down it from your high horse!!

He actually went to Harvard Business School as well. The difference is Bush seemed to be in college to party, frat boy style. After college, Bush's business failures demonstrated that you have to couple an intellect with a degree to achieve success.

I think that questioning Palin's ability to take over as President is valid and something that we should all askoverselves in all honesty. I think that the biggest difference between Palin and Obama, experience aside is that he has curiosity of the world beeyond himself that Palin lacks. Obama has a hunger for reading and learning about world events, probaly since childhood. Palin, although a reasonably good governor has been content in her surrounding without the yearning or desire to explore outside of her surrounding. As a mothe I'm constantly encouraging my children to read books and newspaper. We are living in a global society today and need to be aware of other societies and cultures. I think that this is a major difference between Palin and Obama.

  • Posted By: fastwriter @ 09/29/2008 1:09:34 PM

I think we will all be better off when all that "snow" in Washington melts. I'm hoping that will be in November so America can be strong again and respected as well as the people. And stop dissing foreign/Americans. You're supposed to love and respect all but I know preachers don't preach that anymore, just by the comments about Obama.

GOD has his plans and it's coming to fruition. To me the greedy people are ready to lose everything they have and I say let them.

It is so sad how so many people in this country will defend their political side right into the abyss. As a conservative, I am appalled that Mccain made such a cynical choice. It is clear for all to see that he put power before country. Statistically it is close to probable that he would die before the end of a second term and the world would face president Palin. I don't think Hollywood could dream up such a terrifying prospect. Apoinpoint,

  • Posted By: ernursek @ 09/29/2008 11:14:34 AM

OBAMA JUST ISN'T READY TO BE PRESIDENT. I WOULD RATHER HAVE PALIN AS VICE PRESIDENT THAN AN EXSTREMIST LIKE OBAMA LEAD OUR COUNTRY.

      • Posted By: indytarheel @ 09/29/2008 12:12:21 PM

This writer for Newsweek should turn the same attention and experience factor to Obama. He is the one running for President, and he has little or no experience compared to even his running mate Biden than compared to John McCain, and all people want to talk about is Palin this or Palin that. Let this so called EXPERT writer turn the same attention to the ONE running for the highest office in the world. Obama comes up short in every area. Palin now and has been from Day 1 attacked by liberal bias. Its crystal clear!

        • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 1:06:19 PM

Obama won the debate last Friday. He knows his stuff. Even if Palin and Obama's experience was comparable, Obama has demonstrated command of all the important issues of this election.

        • Posted By: fccFH @ 09/29/2008 1:03:59 PM

There is a reason why Obama has not been attacked so vehemently as Palin, and it is not a liberal bias, but it is the reason why foxnews and the McCain camp have tried to pigeon hole the man as an elitist. Obama is just simply smarter than Palin- and McCain for that matter. He was more than just a community organizer- which is a very commendable position, and it is sad that this nightmare from Alaska chose to chide him on it. We are talking about a man who graduated top of his class from Harvard Law School, fought for civil rights as an attorney, has taught law, was a state senator (why people continue to forget this I do not know) and then went on to become a US Senator. His record of fighting for what is right for Americans and Americas leadership in this world is consistent from job to job, and that is why he has such a loyal and strong following. People who only see his duration in the US senate as his only experience unfairly judge him without having a full understanding and knowledge of his background. The media rarely goes after Obama because there just is not that much to go after. But when you compare him to McCain, a man who yes has been in the senate for a long time (with a flip-flopping, volatile, backstabbing to his own party and now pandering to his own base, and in nearly three decades passed how many bills that made drastic and effective changes to the people he is now saying trust me with your lives- record) it just surprises me people think McCain has what it takes. Obama has proposed clear, sound, thought-out plans and changes for how to address our economy, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, health care, education, etc. And McCain has given only a variation of what Bush has offered for the past eight years. Just to clear up why Palin is attacked so much: she skipped from school to school, failing out of one- went on to be a sports reporter, and won the Miss Wasilla Pageant. Great, she???s been governor of a state that is enormously subsidized by both the US Government and Oil, and she claims victory. Its just crystal clear.

Finally a refreshingly honest assessment of Sara Palin from someone with both journalistic integrity and intelligence. I'm so tired of hearing all of the ridiculous commentary from conservatives about how Palin is being treated unfairly by the liberal media. As an intelligent female lawyer who has also used her law degree to fight for the common people (akin to Obama) I am offended by those who assert that Sarah Palin is as qualified to be Vice President as Obama is to be President. This is simply and obvious untrue! Education and experience aside, Obama understands the complexities of running this country at this time in history. She doesn't. Watch the Couric interview for 3 minutes and it becomes clear that her knowlege of both economics and international affairs pales in comparison to the likes of even Brittany Spears (at least Brittany has been overseas!). Review the other 2 national media interviews she's done and add that the the complete absence of impromptu interviews she's given to other journalists while on the campaign trail this month and it's clear why the McCain camp is keeping her away from the public. She's an embarrassment.

I'm so glad Mr. Zakaria has the guts to say what many of us with any brainpower have been thinking since Labor Day -- she's simply unqualified to be a heartbeat away from being the Commander in Chief of what is still arguably the most powerful country in the world. Heaven forbid Mr. McCain wins the election and then expires while in office leaving her to rule this wonderful and powerful country. If that were to happen we're all doomed.

  • Posted By: JOYCE LM @ 09/29/2008 12:16:14 PM

Does Barack Obama have a degree in economics?

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 1:00:38 PM

He's taught constitutional law for a decade, which is very important when you consider that the current president and his party have wiped their butt with the Constitution over the last eight years.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/29/2008 12:20:53 PM

No, and historically I cannot name one president who had his degree in economics. If someone knows, shout it out.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/29/2008 12:24:37 PM

Here you go Palin fans...What has been exposed of Palin is called the Peter Principle. I will even provide the link....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle Every person with the exception of Bush and his administration reaches it some point in their life. Eight years late, and this article has nothing to do with him.

When a person is properly vetted, they go through an interview process. When a person is improperly vetted, things come out sometimes in the worst possible fashion. When you saw Palin being interviewed by Couric, the answers that were given by her were unscripted. Unfortunately, questions were not asked of Palin like Couric and the three other interviews she gave as part of the vetting process. If she was asked anything like that before she was introduced, she would never have made the cut.

Sure you can practice for the debate. Sure you can even memorize some things, and perhaps we may see some improvement on her answers Thursday. However it does not change the fact she has gone way over her head with her abilities.

Btw George Will, David Frum, and David Brooks and Kathleen Parker have asked her to step down. Zakaria is now joined in the chorus of concern. I think that everyone should be taking a close look and think about one thing. Do you think based upon her interviews, that you can look at someone in their eye and say, I think Palin is presidential, and can take over in a moments notice?

  • Posted By: jpmba @ 09/29/2008 12:59:18 PM

Comment: "Can we now admit the obvious? Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president."
McCain, please think Country first now and make the right decision. Now...

With Sarah Palin on the ticket, anyone that votes for John McCain is simply voting out of team loyalty, with absolutely no concern for what's best for this country. Intelligent Republicans have a very hard choice to make. They are normally loyal to a fault, but this is asking too much.

    • Posted By: Hockeyjon26 @ 09/29/2008 12:58:04 PM

That's exactly what I've been noticing. Too many people are ridiculously loyal to a political party as if it's a football team. Even with someone as arrogantly ignorant as Palin on the Republican ticket, there is blind support.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 12:56:50 PM

Obama called McCain 'John' because that is his name, and they are colleagues in the Senate. Not only did McCain not call Obama 'Barack', he never addressed him by any name. It went along with not looking Barack at all during the debate. Thankfully, those who watched the debate clearly saw this as disrespectful and the polls reflect a clear victory for Obama.

  • Posted By: IL Voter @ 09/29/2008 12:54:34 PM

This article hits the nail directly on the head. It was VERY irresponsible of McCain to pick her as his running mate. This just goes to show that McCain does not exercise good judgement. If McCain/Palin are elected, God help us all.

We keep hearing about how the fundamentals are sound. With regard to Palin, it is also fundamentally clear that she fundamentally flawed and her faculties are, well, just plain weird. She continues to believe that foreign policy is a function of proximity rather than interaction. Her ???strategy??? for engaging Russia is to pray for a clear day so she can deploy the ???tactic??? of looking across the water to see what they are doing! She would continue the fundamentally flawed view that we can borrow-and-spend/squander our way to victory over the Taliban using bar fight tactics ??? punch anybody and let someone else pick up the tab. Yes the fundamentals are indeed strong.

  • Posted By: paulte @ 09/29/2008 10:18:42 AM

Yes, the Palin pick was a strategic political ploy which apparently worked. But what gets me is the media ganging up on Palin. If she were a pro-choice liberal woman, ahe would be given a pass just like Obama is given a pass by the media. I should adjust that to say that Obama has a cheering section in the mainstream media!

And I would agree that Sarah Palin is not ready to be President anymore than Barack Obama is ready to be President! Obama talks a good game but that is all there is to it, just a lot of talk! He has no real experience and for his speeches he needs a teleprompter.

We only have two real choices in terms of voting for President. It makes more sense to vote for the person at the top of the ticket who has the more experience. Conservative people are left out in the cold so all we can do is vote for the lesser evil, McCain & Palin rather than Obama & Biden! Biden has experience but I think he is even a worse choice than Obama!

And as far as this Wall Street bailout goes, I'm just wondering out loud, why don't they have to pay it back or at least as much as they can pay back over a 30 year period. If Wall Street needs a bailout to jumpstart the economy then why should not Wall Street be mortgaged to the government for the next 30 years? That will put an end to the extravagant bonuses & super high compensation they pay out!

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 12:49:28 PM

Poor Palin. She has to answer basic questions about current issues. How unfair! Doesn't everyone know that a hockey mom has no time to read the papers?

  • Posted By: mikezu812 @ 09/29/2008 10:27:39 AM

Why is there no in depth discussion of Obama's recent reply that he is qualified to run this economy because "I think a lot about it" ? What nonsense. Yet you have Fareed Zakaria, a certain Obama apologist questioning Palin's ability to be VICE PRESIDENT. VICE PRESIDENT??? While an empty suit is this close to becoming PRESIDENT? The left is no longer capable of hiding their partiality for Obama. Yes Fareed, thanks for being so "honest".

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/29/2008 12:47:29 PM

I certainly hope Obama thinks a lot about the economy. By her comments, Palin certainly hasn't.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/29/2008 10:33:53 AM

This blog is about Caribou Barbie, not Obama. There is another blog that shows McCain and Obama painted in red and blue that would address your question and remarks

BTW George Will, David Frum, David Brooks, and Kathleen Parker has expressed similar thoughts about Palin. Zakaria has joined the list of conservative journalists that feel the same way he has.

  • Posted By: Hollyu123 @ 09/29/2008 8:56:57 AM

I don't see that her answers have been any more vague than Obama's from the start. Stop being so biased! It's apparent the media is treating Obama with silken gloves! Truly dissappointing that we cannot rely on a credible media.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/29/2008 9:46:32 AM

Perhaps the experiece of Palin is sounding more like someone who has no brain. Experience that makes Dan Quayle sound like a genius compared to Palin. Experience that if I lived next to Canada, that I can say I have foreign policy experience. Experience to compare a Harvard constitutional lawyer who has a brain, to someone who is clueless? Do I need to go on? This is not a Republican versus Democrat issue, this is an issue that affects people on a global level too. Think MACRO!

Kathleen Parker, an early supporter of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, said Friday recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is "out of her league" and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party. Parker's comments follow those by prominent conservatives David Brooks, George Will, and David Frum who have all publicly questioned Palin's readiness to be vice president.

And the above list of conservative commentators are some of the most prominent on the right side of the spectrum. Considering the facts and the commentary of these well respected journalists posting what they did, can you still look someone in eye, knowing that Palin could become POTUS, and say without hesitation, or trepidation that she is ready right now to lead our country after seeing Couric's interview with Palin?

This article is about Palin not Obama

It's not like Biden stated " at the time of the great depression FDR went on television and calmed the public" or Biden telling a man in a wheelchair to "stand up" at a rally. Oh yeah, Biden did say those things and for the record FDR was not president when the great depression started and television was not even invented yet. As far as the guy in the wheelchair maybe Biden thought he had received healing powers from the messiah Barry Obama. Don't expect to see those gaffs on the news or SNL. Wonder why?

Here is the 411, lets grab hands and sing Kumbyah and agree Biden can make some incredible gaffes. Since we can all agree with that lets talk about the reasons as to why he may do that. I am too afflicted with Biden' issue. I have been fighting this my whole life. And it is called a bad habit of thinking three steps ahead before one speaks. Biden does not display lack of intelligence, on the contrary the affliction I am talking about happens to a lot of smart people.

What can he do about it, slow down a wee bit in thinking before speaking. And that is not a cure either, just a temporary patch. I will take his gaffes over someone who has had the Peter Principle caught up with her. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle
