To call Obama a Socialist is to demonstrate ignorance. If you think Sarah is 'just like you" then you believe you are qualified to be President and that you have the talent, education and temprament to act as the CEO of the largest corporation in the history of the world. Wow, I'm impressed.

John McCain is a perfect and embarrassing example of the "Peter Principle," where one rises to their level of incompetency. Apparently he belived Palin's selection was a "coup," maybe a "coup de theatre." As a registered independent in McCain's state of Arizona it was his "coup de grace."

  • Posted By: FRam @ 10/06/2008 2:50:42 AM

Sen. McCain I really thought that you love your country. I believe that you love yourself and your ambition to becme president more than your country. How can you pick a person who does not know anything about foreign policy and economy. ENOUGH!!!

Not since MIss South Carolina came up with that innane answer that they played for days, have i heard anything more ridiculous. She makes the answer Miss Carolina gave sound like it came from a Rhodes Scholar. i would be ashamed to say I supported her because of the bad reflection it would have on me. I don't want people thinking i'm a brainless airhead, who is too stupid to know how dumb I am. But if that does't bother you, go for it. It's a free country.

It is refreshing that someone of your caliber would get it right and say so. You are the best interviewer I have seen in years and I am 74. McCain really blew it big time! She is so far out of her league it is absolutely pathetic. No way did McCain put country first. Keep up your great honest reporting, putting truth ahead of all else. Anna Crist

    For wdn64:

It is STUNNING that you believe what you are saying is "campaigning"...just STUNNING.

But what is even more stunning is that you are sincere...

Many Republicans unwavering support of Palin shows that they'd support anyone as long as they were running for the Republican party. McCain could have went to the local zoo and selected a meerkat as a running mate and the Republicans would still support his choice and pretend like it's fully qualified.

Sarah from what I know of her and what she has said or her views, I don't think she's a good person at all, then again McCain, Obama & Biden aren't very smart either and for voting for the $700 Billion WALL STREET BAILOUT, they should step down from the senate and drop out of the presidental race, due to there lack of leadership ability

Dear Fareed, I have always been very impressed with your very insightful, fair and balanced analysis over the years since you started with Newsweek several years ago. I have also watched some of your CNN interveiws and look forward to more. So a big thank you and keep doing ir right.

About Sarah Palin, are you suer she is that bad? Isn't it too early to judge her? Most VPs and Presidents have little or no experience before they won the election so why is Palin exceptionally poor? I don't get it.

SHE ONLY REINFORCED THE FACT THAT SHE IS CLUELESS. SURE SHE MADE HAVE EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS FOR THE FACT SHE DIDN'T DROOL BUT THE FACT THAT SHE OPENLY REFUSED TO ANSWER A MODERATOR'S QUESTION (WHO BY THE WAY WAS BEING SUPER SOFT WITH HER) WOULD GET YOU KICKED OFF A HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TEAM. SHE IS LIKE A VERY BAD JOKE WITH POSIBLE EXTREME DIRE CONSEQUENCES IF TAKEN SERIOUSLY......................ON ANOTHER NOTE.....

ISN'T IT HILARIOUS TO HEAR ALL THE REPUBLICANS LIKE HANNITY, O'REILLY AND RUSH SCREAM PALIN WON THE DEBATE BUT NOT ONE-NOT ONE POLL SHOWS SHE CAME CLOSE TO WINNING? THEY ARE AS DELUSIONAL AS THEIR LEADER BUSH. FOX'S OWN POLL HAD BIDEN WINNING 60% TO 30%. JUST PATHETIC.

    • Posted By: muslimsforpresidents @ 10/04/2008 8:10:08 PM

Right wing idiots think it is 2004. They are going to be in for a surprise.

  • Posted By: Tanja @ 10/03/2008 3:08:04 PM

I saw the debate yesterday. She is TOUGH. There were moments that BIDEN let his political face slip. He's been debating for years and did not cause a dent. Nothing. BIDEN didn't win. PALIN didn't lose.

The media commentators who made the SAME exact comments about Obama's debate (who thought Obama won) were basically speechless. This was a LIVE broadcasting. It spoke volumes. Yeah she won. Guillani (hope I got the spelling right) was grinning like a Geshire cat. It was pretty amazing. A tough debate.

Did you know that Palin's family members are teachers?
Did you know that she is one of 4 kids and had to work her way to college?
Did you know that her and her husband had no health insurance?
Did you know that she is from a middle class family?
Did you know that her son is in the military?

I am glad that I saw the debate and actually had a chance to HEAR her.
She is a very strong, intelligent woman with experience. More experience than Obama.A Mayor and now a Governor. She has a strong work ethic as I am sure most moms do. She is a normal person like you and I. She's real.

I decided to vote for the Republican ticket this time. In the past I voted for Clinton and Nader.

REGISTER TO VOTE. IT IS OUR RIGHT. THANK YOU.

Wow, maybe my family has had the same thing, and perhaps I should become vice president too? WTF, your argument is weaker then a sack of sh!t. Good luck braniac

      • Posted By: star3 @ 10/04/2008 2:27:50 PM

Typical remark from a leftist, who, when confronted by intelligence combined with common sense, does not recognize it, not ever having any of their own, thus, they resort to the only weapon they have---name calling and insults. Tsk, tsk, what a waste. I, personally, do not care what one's name is, or what they look like, as long as they do a good job for the country, however, it is normal that most people might raise an eyebrow over someone with a Muslim name, or who looks mid-eastern, or whose muslim affiliation is questionable; gosh, I wonder why that is........could it possibly be because just seven years ago we were attacked by a group of people fitting this description?? Hummm...given that we are smart people, and well educated in this country, one might, also, question the depth of some people's ability to use those smarts and education, when there is such a contrast between those who are capable of communicating without resorting to the Vulgarian laungage, which offers no believable solutions, and those who seem to know only that language. I know which ones I will put my trust in.

    • Posted By: mbarnich @ 10/03/2008 3:14:45 PM

Tanja, are you not looking at the polls? I have not seen one poll where Palin won. In one case they had Biden at 77%. Being arrogant isn't winning. As a woman I find her an embarrassment and McCain is a habitual liar who personifies the expression flip-flopper. But I did enjoy the Achilles Heel question. Palin, obviously, didn't understand what that means and answered the question backwards. What an idiot.

  • Posted By: willit63 @ 10/03/2008 9:34:15 PM

This is the first time I've had a chance to read one of your stories. I must say you are exactly right about Palin and have made your case very clearly. I would honestly consider moving to another country if she is elected. T.

How can so many citizens be willing to place in such a powerful position a person who cannot demonstrate even a basic understand of how our system works, of the world in which we live or of the processes by which we came to be here?

Before some of the readers here accuse me of being a ???Northeastern Liberal Elitist??? (which I would frankly take as a complement), know that I grew up in rural Tennessee, was raised in the Southern Baptist church and was elated to be a staunch supporter of Ronal Regan when he ran for president.

The Honorable Governor seemed only to be able to name a single Supreme Court decision ??? one which we she wants desperately to overturn, and yet she seems to have not the slightest idea how that decision came to be, who was involved, or anything else about it, or the court.

I believe in freedom of religion. Yes, that also means freedom from religion, should one so choose. Anything else at all is state sponsorship of religion, and that is very clearly prohibited in the Constitution of the United States .. you know, that musty, 221 old document that somehow seems to get in the way of people trying to place their own agenda ahead of the welfare of our nation as a whole.

Had I needed another reason to be horrified of Governor Palin assuming power in this country (McCain may be healthy now but 8 years is a long time), her apparent assertion that she believes that human beings co-existed with dinosaurs is enough. Apparently millions of people also believe this, and they are voters. Come one people .. are you serious?

Unfortunately, I know the answer to that question already. Yes, they are serious. That frightens me far more than she does.

  • Posted By: greatmidwest @ 10/04/2008 4:26:25 PM

Senator Biden clearly won the debate with his knowledge of both, our nation's economic and foreign policy problems. He answered the questions millions of Americans woryy about, while Gov. Palin chose to cheerlead her way out of her questions and throw in winks and sassyness to make up for her lack of knowledge on both the economy and War in Iraq.

I thought Gwen Ifill was rather conciliatory to Ms. Palin during the debate. Ms. Ifill could have asked the candiates about their views on Evolution, Stem-cell research, Sex Education, as well as abortion, but she chose not to do so. Can you imagine Palin saying how she doesn't believe in Darwin's The Origin of Species, research to hlep cure cancer and other diseases, educating teens about teen pregnancy and STD's, and denying women access to the day-after pill, and termination of an unwanted pregnancy??? The McCain campaign talks about the government not being involved in a universal-type health care initiative because they don't want to interfere with "the doctor-patient relationship", but it's already tainted by corporate HMOs who dictate the quality of care that one receives, and interfering with possible cures for medical diseases, and denying a woman the right to an abortion, even after being raped is an absolute intrusion into a person's life. The government should not have that right. The other Palin and her radical views was slowly shoved into the closet and kept out of view from the American people last Thursday night. ms. Palin is not qualified to be VP on many accounts, not just based on her ignorance about the economy and foreign policy......It's time for Obama & Biden to take over leadership in the White House.

Can't hide from the press and be ready to lead. How can you be effective vp not talking and showing the American people you can finish a thought. McCain will continue to bleed until his run for presidency is dead.

Have you ever noticed that Fareed Zakaria looks like a wild-eyed terrorist? Look at his picture, and look at his eyes, and tell me you would like the guy on the same airplane as you? Please.

He looks like he got the call of Allah and is about to start the Jihad. Which maybe he has....

      • Posted By: star3 @ 10/04/2008 1:35:44 PM

muslimsfortargetpractice---We don't have to watch what we say, our constitution gives us FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Obama will never be MY president, or anyone's who has a working brain, even if he does manage to convince enough one celled brain dead ass kissing pathetic jackasses (appropriate symbol for your party, by the way) to put his homosexual butt in the White House. I will never follow where he wants to lead, but I will enjoy watching those who put him in that position squirm when they get EXACTLY what they voted for, but not what they expected. And if you don't believe the homosexual encounter he had, watch this video on this website on youtube: larrysinclair.com.org

And what are you Larry's little Angel? Wow another agent of Sinclair, why don't you get some oil on yourself and you and Sinclair can do whatever. Maybe you are tailer trash, if that is the case I will personally forgive you for being an idiot.

No sh!t dumbsh!t. However, your in the same class as this Jim person, so I will give you the same advice. Grow-up, and reread what Jim the idiot wrote, and put into context. What are you, his mother? How would like to have been the author and someone called you a terrorist and you were a WASP, born and raised with wealth? Think before you defend and write.

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 10/04/2008 10:51:36 AM

Jimbo, your comments are shockingly stupid and totally scary. You are the one who is the terrorist, and I don't even have to see your picture. Fareed is an excellent writer and journalist and he's stating the obvious - Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to this election and to the way our US democracy is being steamrollered by the GOP idiots who gave us Bush Jr. -- Twice. And now the moron factor in the US wants to elect McCain-Palin, as if they didn't get enough stupidity all these eight years. That's really the worst thing about this entire election - the electorate, as represented by you and your kind, is just abysmally stupid. Ignorant, under-educated, fanatical... sounds like the Dark Ages? It's not so far-feteched. We are the ONLY developed nation where a majority (more than 51%) still question Darwin's theory of evolution.

I'd say apes like you should go back to the forest and pick on the bananas you need to sustain your stupid lives. But actually, I'm insulting the apes now. Sorry Chimps.

To Mbarnich, what university did you atttend by the way?

There are many excellent universities besides Harvard across the United States. I think education is wonderful. Like many Americans; I work hard, paid my way to go to school and am proud of my accomplishments. Tuition is expensive and most students aren't given grants. In the debates, PALIN expressed her admiration and respect to educators along with Biden. The debate was respectful on both sides.

I earned two degrees. First ever in my family to attend college and graduated. There are many out there who are living their dream of earning a degree. Hardworking people like you and I with different opinions. The best leaders come from ordinary people who want to make a difference and go that extra mile.

Sarah Palin is one of them who is experienced and did not have an easy life. She does not come from a wealthy family. She did not get a free ride in college. She had to work for it. She represents hardworking Americans and women. I give her credit and she earned my vote.

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 10/04/2008 11:35:33 AM

Well, McCain certainly DID get a "free ride" and thanks to his family, he got into the Naval Academy, where he fooled around and squandered his educational opportunity and barely graduated, among the lowest five in the class of nearly 900.

Obama, by contrast, had to struggle. He didn't come from a rich family, he had to earn every penny for college, or apply for scholarships. But when he got into Columbia University (and later to Harvard Law School), he worked hard and achieved the best marks, the role of editor of the Harvard Law Review (huge feather in his cap), and many other highlights. He then turned down several offers to work on Wall Street (though he did that for a year as a writer/researcher) and went back home to Chicago to work in the slums to help people.

The GOP is making fun of "community service" but that's because they run canddiates who they can corrupt, if they're not already corrupt, to take office solely for the purpose of passing policies and laws that favor the rich, that line the pockets of the top 400 richest people in America, and that promote profits for Wall Street and CEOs of major corporations. I'm not against big business; it's just that when it goes HOG-WILD, like it has for the past decade, it causes major fallout and now the taxpayer is having to foot the bill.

I have two degrees myself, and I understand your point, but I think you might be a victim of the GOP b.s. again, because Palin is NOT the right candidate to be VP despite their talking points. She is underqualified, ignorant and not even remotely interested in helping anyone except maybe her constituent in Alsaka - where her family and friends all live. It's too sad that she even has a chance - Hillary was a much stronger choice and her politics are much closer to what the mainstream of America believes -- freedom of choice, equal pay for equal work, economic partity with men, etc. Palin stands for nothing but motherhood and baby-making (some call it sex), and no offense, but she is just a little bit dumb.

      • Posted By: star3 @ 10/04/2008 2:07:38 PM

What difference does it make who got a "free" ride, or who worked hard to achieve their goals, some people are richer than others---so what? Thats life. I can guareentee that if any of us less blessed with money had the been born to wealthy parents, we would have loved every minute of the advantages. Sometimes money does corrupt (Paris Hilton is a prime example, but God loves her anyway). The important point is that, John McCain did finally get enough maturity to realize his goals, and went through a terrible trauma while he was a POW. He is no longer a kid, he grew up And because of the lessons he has learned, he will make a much better leader than the fame loving Obama and his tag along wife who feel its their "right" to be treated as royalty because of their poor mistreated ancestors who were slaves. Ha! If you but into that scenario, then I have some beach front property in Arizona I'd like to sell you. Obama has lied about his drug use being limited to his teenage years, go to this website to learn the truth: larrtsinclair.org/ I am not racist, so don't start that song & dance; I've heard it enough that I can sing it backwards, and do the dance steps while mountain climbing. If it were Condi Rice or Colin Powell, I would vote for them without batting an eye, but neither of them wanted the job, and I can't blame them, I don't want it either, too stressful, but I do want someone who can hold up well under pressure, someone who won't be paying more attention to whats between their legs instead of using whats between their ears, someone who will actually put America and the American people FIRST! Now, if in your heart of hearts, you can honestly believe Obama is that person, then go for it, but if, within the privacy of your own mind & heart, you can not honestly accept that he is, if there is a question mark there, then maybe you should re-think some things, and ask yourself exactly what it is YOU want from your president, I preceive Obama as arrogant and full of himself; I preceive McCain/Palin as sincere. And as for Biden, he is so "honest" he refused to pay his campaign worker after he lost his run for president back in the 80s, stiffed this worker for over $50, 000. Yeah, real charmers, this group. Anyway, check out the website I suggested, unles you're allergic to facts.

It???s all kind of sad. It seems to me that America does not want smart people with wisdom. Which to me Obama & Biden have. America seems to like idiots running the country. I work in so called corporate America and I see the same kind of mind set displayed every day. Most people don't understand wisdom, which both McCain & Palin both lack. Like notroubleatall1963 comment maybe America has not had enough of President Bush. And seems to be ready for a Bush 3rd term, which you will get from McCain & Palin. I did not vote for him neither time, because wisdom which he does not have was obvious. You have seen where that has got us all in the last 8 years. Maybe that???s the way America likes it to be. This is not the America I once knew and loved. Voting Republican this time around is a big waste of time. I think if it does happen we are doomed. What has happen to ???We The People??? in our roots of our nation?
There is another fundamental problem with our nation. Our nation infrastructure is in shambles. Bridges, Railroad, Water, Electricity, Roads, Education, Airports, etc. These things are very important to an industrialized nation as ours. This is where money needs to be spent to create jobs. Both parties need to focus in these areas. People are not always going to be happy. But you got to start somewhere ???.
