What a disaster. If the people of the United States elect John McCain, knowing full well that they are voting for this windbag as next in line, well say bye-bye to the USA leadership in the world, and say hello to a new well-deserved second-class status.

    • Posted By: sunnfjord @ 09/28/2008 6:57:13 PM

Second-class status? Have you been hiding under a rock the last 8 years? Respect for the US is at its lowest ever. Can it get any worse? Yes, with McCain/Palin in the WH. If Obama wins this election, there is a possibilty that the US will regain the status around the world it once had, respect, envy and admiration.

When the time comes to analyze the causes of the Republican defeat this next November, Mrs. Palin is going to be very close to the top of the list. On the other hand, she's brought a rush of fresh air to involuntary comedy. Her performances on this past TV interviews will someday be legendary. The expresion "To pull a Palin", will have a distinguished place in pols vocabulary.

Isn't McCain a Senator too, without any executive experience? Why does nobody bring this up? Pallin experience is irrelevant when she is a 1) religious fanatic (they speak in tongues at her church), would expect a 12 yr old raped by her father to keep the baby, couldn't fill in the country names of a blank map of the middle east, and she said this nonsense (among other nonsensical ignorant ramblings in one of her 2 interviews): "We--we do--it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where--where do they go? ??? ??? Wha? This woman has only given 2 interviews in the time Biden has given 84! Rural people should be insulted that she is supposed to be the embodiment of them! She???s a walking stereotype of provinciality!

  • Posted By: sunnfjord @ 09/28/2008 6:52:44 PM

Executive Experience? George W. Bush was the Governor of Texas before he was elected President of the United States. He had far more experience than Palin. Do I need to continue?

I think it's time for McCain to withdrwaw from the race and endorse Obama. If he has any lucid moments, he would have to agree that his selection of Palin proves he is unfit to be Commander in Chief.

As an independent and, initially a supporter of John McCain, I think Fareed Zakaria's analysis is right on target. I feel that John McCain made a purely political decision in selecting Sarah Palin. This is a decision that could have disastrous ramifications should something happen to Senator McCain. I actually feel betrayed by a person who I truly did think was a man of principle. This decision wasn't principle, it was pure politics.

  • Posted By: abemahl @ 09/28/2008 6:42:30 PM

sunnjford,. People have their reasons to vote for McCain, although I am not one of them. They are not stupid. Many of them remember McCain for being a man of principle before the last 3 years. Many of them a're afraid of Obama giving in to leftist pitfalls when in office. Biden they know as a Democrat who wouldn't do that. But they don't know that about Obama yet. If McCain wins, which will upset me to no end, I'm not going to spread anti-American poison

  • Posted By: mimichka07 @ 09/28/2008 4:26:48 PM

Republicans are funny... Even when the know someone [Palin] is way above their head, the are willing to sacrafice their own country just to win an election... kinda' reminds me of socialism...

I resent that socialism statement. I live in a socialistic country and your statement is insulting. Believe me, Sarah Palin wouldn't be elected dogcatcher in this country. Our country ranks No. 2 in the world in "Adult at high literacy level". The US ranks No. 9. Maybe that explaines why Palin is on McCain's ticket. It's mind boggling to us that McCain is anywhere near Obama in the polls. It makes us question the intellegence og the American people. McCain has made this election in to a circus.

Palin is a huge threat to our foreign and domestic security. Help us all if she were to become president. The McCain camp swears they vetted her and found her to be the best veep pick. If this is how carefully a McCain administration will act on important issues, how can we possibly think about electing him?

    • Posted By: MoralDem @ 09/28/2008 6:30:37 PM

Yes, and you wonder how all of the actually qualified Republicans, male and female alike, must have reacted to the news that Palin was the "most qualified."

  • Posted By: cygnusx1 @ 09/28/2008 3:41:23 PM

If you think Obama is qualified to be Commander and Chief when he didn???t even know the difference between a Battalion and Brigade, and all that experience of less than 2 years as a first term Senator, (wow)! Obama's recent Condoning of the Russian invasion of Russian aggression against Georgia in South Ossetia is Ludicrous! His 3rd response was for the UN to pass a resolution to condemn the Russian invasion which shows he didn???t even know that all members of the UN Security council had veto power, (something most 13 year olds know)! You can pick up ANY person on the street and they will be able to answer the questions better than OBAMA! ??? What is truly pathetic is that Obama supporters have to compare him to the VP nominee, and he???s still a loser!
Palin has more experience as a leader than Obama hands down.
    1) Leader of the State National Guard
    2) Mayor
    3) Governor
All executive leadership jobs with a record of real change. Clinton was only governor of AR with one of the smallest budgets of any state! Reagan was governor of CA, Carter was governor of Georgia in fact 15 presidents are former governors, I???m trying to think how many ???Community Organizers??? became president? Oh that???s right ZERO. I do agree with Biden though when he said ???Obama isn't ready to be President??? As Obama keeps opening his mouth with his indecisiveness and profound ignorance American???s will see Obama is dangerous for America.

    • Posted By: MoralDem @ 09/28/2008 6:29:14 PM

So you're voting for SENATOR McCain because..... because he has this governor on his ticket? Ouch! I guess you're the fool he was aiming for.

    • Posted By: Lt Johnson @ 09/28/2008 4:52:28 PM

So, does this mean you will help her study for any potential questions she may be asked if Mcain wins?
You can start by telling her what the duties of the VP is first..

    • Posted By: WorriedGramma @ 09/28/2008 4:13:26 PM

It is true that Palin was a mayor and a governor, but to compare her to past presidents that were also governors of states would be a little out of the ball park. Bill Clinton governed Arkasas who's last population poll was 2,810.872. Ronal Reagan governed California. In 1980 the population of Calfornia was 23,667,140. Jimmy Carter governed Georgia. A 1993 popluation poll found 6,917,140, Alaska's population is 670,053 in the 2006 poll. Approximately the same population as Memphis Tennesee.
My point being that she cannot be compared closely to these well known presidents as the amount of people that she governs is very small. A size of a city in the mainland U.S. That also being another problem for Mrs. Palin is that she is up there by Russia, she isn't aware of what goes on in Mainstreet America as her opportunities to first hand explore have been minimal. I am not faulting her, I am merely expressing facts. "Out of touch" a popular phrase in the campaign DOES apply to Mrs. Palin. No fault does apply here as well as fact.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/28/2008 3:53:56 PM

Kathleen Parker, an early supporter of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, said Friday recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is "out of her league" and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party. Parker's comments follow those by prominent conservatives David Brooks, George Will, and David Frum who have all publicly questioned Palin's readiness to be vice president.

And the above list of conservative commentators are some of the most prominent on the right side of the spectrum. Considering the facts and the commentary of these well respected journalists posting what they did, can you still look someone in eye, knowing that Palin could become POTUS, and say without hesitation, or trepidation that she is ready right now to lead our country after seeing Couric's interview with Palin?

And don't give the BS that Couric was hard on her. If you saw the debate, Couric's questions were easier than the ones that both McCain and Obama were given. So if you think Couric was hard, what is she going to do when she has her face-off with Biden? Case closed.

As mentioned in one of my earlier comments about Palin:

Sooner than later, she will wish upon a star that will take her far, far, away from all this nightmare of a dream she is dreaming, wishing that she was back cleaning diapers and settling in at the end of the day's work with her 'loving' husband and her sometime lover (in between) the sheets of bedlam, (the popular name for the hospital of St. Mary of Bethlehem in London, an insane asylum, away from the scene of uproar and confusion), that she is drawn into by dear Johnny McLame who believes she is the "IT" factor to his success.

    Wrong!!!

My cat Freedom knows more about governance than she does; at least, he is fair in being nice to me when I feed him, he would make a better VP than she would...he knows the difference and does not play favourites, and is not nasty when things do not go his way.

Palin's nickname here is Miss Clueless.

The Repubs are not protecting her against the reporters; they are protecting her from herself, who, every time she opens her mouth is proof of evidence that she is getting them into hot water - due to her lack in every way, manner, shape and form.

This is not a prom night or a beauty pageant contest...this is war...with countries... with whom she has absolutely no idea as to how they think, live, philosophise and everything else combined, let alone be an accessory in alleviating pressures or negotiations of any kind with them. Are you kidding me...?

Ms. Palin is delving into serious stuff that involves mankind's interests on a global level. This woman is a time bomb just waiting to explode. She is aware of that and I honestly do not believe that she is naive to the degree that the position she is in now as VP is not a cruel position to be in. I don't believe she sleeps at night... her vibration of fearfulness is reaching all areas of the world; everybody's talking the same tongue...GET THIS DANGEROUS WOMAN OUT OF THERE... FAST!!!

The lede should have ended not "please, but "puh-leeze." People younger than I am would have understood your point immediately.

On the other hand, since folks seem to feel they don't need to be informed at all these days, maybe your lede may have at least attracted their attention. We can only hope.

If Palin does not have enough experience to be VP, then Obama certainly does not have enough experience to be President. How long do we have to listen to this dribble? All comments about McCain and his running mate, NO comments about Obama having no experience, is corrupt, runs with the anti america crowd, and is getting away with it. When do we hear the truth about Obama?

    • Posted By: Workin' Patriot @ 09/28/2008 3:46:53 PM

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE...IF YOU CARE TO LOOK.Perhaps you don't like what you see.Whichever the case, the truth doesn't change because you don't like it

How enlightened is this writer? Why can't the writer analyze Palin's response to a few interviews and access her interlligence. I suggest for peoople to eradicate color and see the truth and choose wisely.

      • Posted By: Workin' Patriot @ 09/28/2008 3:56:58 PM

        Apparently....YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

  • Posted By: sunnfjord @ 09/28/2008 6:19:27 PM

McCain's strategy. He believes Sarah Palin can help him win this election. If he does win, Sarah Palin will resign and he will appoint his friend Joe Lieberman the new VP (he already said; if I want someone to resign, believe me, they will resign). He knows he will not have the support from the republican base with Lieberman on the ticket. This must be the explanation. If not, his mother should have him commited.

  • Posted By: 4Heavenssake @ 09/28/2008 6:18:12 PM

In the lede, you should have said "Puhleeze," All considered, it might have made your point just in that one line.

P.S. Fundamentally, as a journalist, you're one of the reasons I cancelled my Newsweek subscription.
Your opinion is worthless. Try writing from a purely Who,what, where, when how and why and not
from the slanted liberal propaganda that is the core of your vomitted verbage.

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 09/28/2008 6:08:58 PM

There is a difference between a reporter -- who is concerned with who, what, where when and how -- and a columnist -- who is concerned with WHY. A columnist is paid to deliver his or her opinion. That's the job.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 09/28/2008 4:43:35 PM

Dear Mr. Gomez, do you have these qualifications as Zakaria?..He received a B.A. from Yale and a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard. Before you bash people or a periodical, can you say you have his credentials, qualifications or background? Perhaps if you looked a little further beyond what Zakaria wrote, there are prominent conservative writers that say the same thing as he does.

The best comment I've seen so far is from a Rebublican operative who said, basically, that the Jaws of Life couldn't pry a coherent sentence out of Palin. Has it not become painfully obvious that this Trophy Veep is way in over her head? What else do we need to see? McCain shields her from reporters, she is only let out of the cage when GOP operatives think she may rise to the occasion (but doesn't) in one-to-one interviews, and she consistently shows that she can't string 2 sentences together that make any sense whatsoever. She's one melanoma from being the President if McCain is elected. If this doesn't send fear up your spines, then you deserve what you get.

  • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 09/28/2008 6:00:21 PM

I'm sure the Saturday Night Live staff hopes Palin stays in the race for the duration. She's lightened their writing load considerably. They don't even have to scrpt skits for Tina Fey's Palin. Just hand Tina the transcript from Palin's own most recent interview and let let her breeze through it. Fey's airhead Palin was a hoot last night -- until I realized that those disconnected, meadering words were straight out of Silly Sarah's own mouth.
