John McCain is an avid reader and is known for rereading many works of his favorite authors. The favorite author of John McCain is Herman Wouk who has written The Winds of War, War and Remembrance, and the Caine Mutiny. Wouk served as an executive Naval officer aboard a minesweeper during War War II and used that experience in forming the character of Captain Queeg in the Caine Mutiny. Victor Henry the main character in Winds of War and War and Remembrance was a naval officer who became a confidant both to FDR and Harry Truman. FDR and Harry Truman went outside the normal channels of military command and relied on Victor Henry for straight talk advice on how to approach Russia and Germany and Japan prior and during World War II. John McCain sees himself as the Victor Henry character who was a realist in foreign policy and understood the nuances of war and foreign policy better than anyone. John McCain is a realist and more knowledgeable about foreign policy than either Joe Biden or Barack Obama due to his experiences and also just growing up as the son and grandson of Navy admirals. Barack Obama and Joe Biden have no military background between them and do not even have the background to know who to connect with to get straight back channel information. Barack Obama and Joe Biden lack the knowledge to even ask the right questions even if they could line up a current day Pug Henry commander to give them the straight scoop. Herman Wouk wove history into his novels. There is saying that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat history. John McCain knows history and has lived it and will use that knowledge to guide the United States through the tough challenges that we face in the war on terror, radical Islam and a resurgent Russia.

Kathleen Parker, an early supporter of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, said Friday recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is "out of her league" and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party. Parker's comments follow those by prominent conservatives David Brooks, George Will, and David Frum who have all publicly questioned Palin's readiness to be vice president.

And the above list of conservative commentators are some of the most prominent on the right side of the spectrum. Considering the facts and the commentary of these well respected journalists posting what they did, can you still look someone in eye, knowing that Palin could become POTUS, and say without hesitation, or trepidation that she is ready right now to lead our country after seeing Couric's interview with Palin?

And don't give the BS that Couric was hard on her. If you saw the debate, Couric's questions were easier than the ones that both McCain and Obama were given. So if you think Couric was hard, what is she going to do when she has her face-off with Biden?

This article is about Palin. Case closed.

I watched a Sunday news show and noted the general disdain by the ABC Roundtable regarding John McCain statements regarding Governor Sarah Palin foreign policy credentials as a Governor of Alaska. Everyone thought that comment was funny and there was no basis to support it. How does ABC news reconcile that position with Governor Rick Perry of Texas standing up to President George Bush and World Court opposition to the execution of Mexican nationals who did not have an opportunity to see their Mexican consul. Governor Rick Perry and the State of Texas ignored Bush and the World Court and went ahead and executed the Mexican national convicted of capital murder. In so doing the Governor of Texas conducted an amazing foreign policy that contradicted the official foreign policy of the United States. State criminal law statutes trump federal law and international law. States along the Mexican border such as Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California have had to deal with economic and immigration issues and relations with Mexico on a day to day basis. Those Southern governors do have foreign policy experience. ABC news reporters display their ignorance when they do not recognize the intimacy that exists between states and countries on their border such as Mexico and Russia. The distance to Mexico City from Austin Texas is closer than to Washington DC. On issues ranging from increased trade and international investment, the war on drugs, border security, to immigration, to extradition of fugitives from foreign countries, states are involved in relations with foreign countries. While Washington pontificates and studies issues for decades, states are forced to come up with their own solutions in relations with neighboring countries. Sarah Palin???s experience as Governor of Alaska is relevant foreign policy experience.

Waving or wearing a flag is not a substitute for my patriotic duty to question and criticize my government when I disagree with its words, intentions and/or actions. Even though IMHO, the news has been bad and very ugly for the last eight years I must listen. I must stay as informed as possible. Mr. Z with his steady and clear presentation of our world has made the medicine go down easier in his books, articles and on GPS. Once again I need to thank him.

    Now for the bad news:
I know who I am and fight daily the urge to put on my aluminum foil hat. Sense 2000, I have heard myself screaming foul to fire, in hopes that someone with more power then myself would hear my words of fear. Finally, someone with an obviously good education, high intelligence, world wide exposure and respect has written in a widely read and fairly respected magazine the following:
???But she has never spent a day thinking about any important national or international issue, and this is a hell of a time to start.???

    OMG!
The bad news? I???m not crazy but I only have one vote.

You are correct. Sarah Palin does have the catchphrases down but has yet to put them into coherent answers, kinda like that Miss Teen contestant who kept blurting out "such as.. Iraq and Africa, such as.." However, I don't think this be be a detriment to her in the upcoming debate.. of course, I'm assuming the debate will be in a multiple choice format.

Fareed, you are exactly right on. I hope and pray you will push this issue throughout the media. Palin is not even close to ready, and for her to be a heartbeat away from the presifdency is more than frightening. Thanks for writing the truth.

You guys are right, what we really need is 8 more years of the existing economic policy that has worked so well...

  • Posted By: DXBADBOY @ 09/28/2008 8:31:08 AM

Just more Liberal tripe to attempt to scare us AGAIN!! We support John and Sarah...and the more you bash them, the more resolute we are to back them. GOD BLESS AMERICA. If you put a gun to my head and said "pull the lever for NObama" I would say "pull the trigger."

And that my friend is why you're an idiot!!! OBAMA/BIDEN 08'

  • Posted By: mimichka07 @ 09/28/2008 3:28:21 PM

See it only took a few minutes to show your true agenda. Sorry everyone dons't look like you, chew tabacco, and carry a shotgun. Obama is a candidate, Palin is a moose hunter.

  • Posted By: oldweek @ 09/28/2008 3:24:25 PM

Hey, Fareed Zakaria. How much did you get pay for this *** bias stuff?
Does Barack Huisein Obama have enough experiences to be a president?

  • Posted By: MikiBeach @ 09/28/2008 3:24:25 PM

You know the similarities between Palin and Bush are just astounding. Neither can speak in coherent sentences. And BOTH were governors. Loving Jesus is not a prerequisite to governor the country. I say send her back to Wasilla.

And to Granny's 60's Chick: Obama was seven years old when all of that happened. Sheesh get a time line grip! The article was about Palin not Obama.

Typical Republican "beat around the bush" comment. Am I running for VP? Then it dosn't matter...

  • Posted By: Watcher2008andbeyond @ 09/28/2008 3:23:32 PM

Palin is clearly out of her league. By pushing her out front long before she was prepared, John McCain and his crew has done a disservice to a rising female politician. Shaame on you John. It is clear that you are not beingled by the dogma of "putting our country first", but rather by your personal and selfish ambition..

  • Posted By: mimichka07 @ 09/28/2008 3:20:07 PM

Leave it to the Republicans to find a "moose hunter", and make her vice president. What? Larry the cable guy was too busy? Is this a serious Presidential election, or a California Governer "style election

  • Posted By: grannygroover @ 09/28/2008 3:18:43 PM

    Granny 60s--you are SO right!

  • Posted By: sk123 @ 09/28/2008 3:17:47 PM

    To Granny 60's chick:
    Answer to your comments:
Experience - Judgment/temprament/intelligence matters more than experience. What did George Bush do with his experience as the Governor or Texas.
Corrupt - what about troopergate/charging for rape kits/hiring people because of their loyalty to you, having your husband present during official discusions, not cooperating with subpoenas in official investigation....this is corruption too!!
Anti-American crowd- Todd Palin belongs to a party that wants to break from the US!! That is more anti-american than criticizing your government for accountability for its actions..

  • Posted By: Tried&True @ 09/28/2008 3:01:08 PM

John McCain's judgment in choosing Palin is a clear message to America and the world that he may well have a lot in common mentally with Palin. I question his ability to choose people competent enough to steer our government in the coming years of more energy and economic crises.

  • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 09/28/2008 2:49:41 PM

"You don't blink" is not an effective crisis management strategy, it is something a teenager says when he plays chicken with his parent's station wagon. Can you imagine this woman with access to atomic weapons?

And although I normally agree with Mr. Zakaria, urging Palin to "stay home with her family" is a cheap, dare I say, sexist comment. John McCain, however, is not sexist when he keeps Palin away from the cameras, he is instead behaving in a prudent manner - and saying prudent and McCain in the same sentence is a stretch.

I truly believe that McCain would keep a completely incompetent MALE candidate away from the cameras, too.

isn't fareed a muslim who wants a muslim president

Arent you a bigot who wants to be a bigot?

  • Posted By: stacy72 @ 09/28/2008 2:45:17 PM

I'm a 35 year old white, Christian, married, mother of two children (one of whom has special needs) and the nicest thing I can say about Palin is she looks good for her age.
I truly hope McCain is not our next president, but even more than that, I sincerely pray that if he does, he will live out his term. The thought of Palin being in charge is absolutely frightening.
