I like the way Palin considers herself a "Maverick", but is not "Maverick" enough to break the rule, and speak with reporters. I think it's really stupid o fher not to. Even if she isn't an expert in all the issues, who cares, if being an expert counted for something we would never have voted any president into office. Election day is ultimately about how many stupid people will vote for you. If republicans really and trully believed in John McCain, they would have voted for John Kerry in 2004, a Vietnam War Hero, that stood up for what he believed in, and helped to end a war. This guy Mylo Spams absolute non sense about Obama not being able to speak without a teleprompter. Are you kidding me! Teleprompters aren't some magic answer giving machine, they simply help you stay on point, and you might want to tune into the next debate, there were no teleprompters there, and it looked like your candidate was the one not looking so good. McCain is man that has tried to run for president the last 16 years, he wasn't good enough then why would he be any better now. He claims to disagree with this administration, yet he did not try to run for president in 2004. I am a very concerned American Citizen, and i don't believe that a man that saw first hand the brutallity of war, and yet is so eager to send troops into harms way to make oil tycoons richer is the right man to run my country. This November i will put my country first, and i will cast my vote for Mr. Obama. I really hope that America can do the right thing, and help get us out of this mess.

"McCain is man that has tried to run for president the last 16 years, he wasn't good enough then why would he be any better now. "

But you just said that it isn't how "good enough" a candidate is, rather it is how many "dumb Americans" they can get to vote for them,

So does this mean that if Obama wins then there are more dumb Democrats than there are dumb Republicans?

By your lack-of-logic, yes, but then we would have an INTELLIGENT President!!! Wouldn't THAT be something (different)?

    Failure of the Republican Party...

AP reported, "First lady Laura Bush said Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin lacks sufficient foreign policy experience..."

Obviously, for this comment to have been made, behind the scenes, those Foreign Leaders who met Governor Palin have informed the Bush Administration that they "...must be joking!"

John McCain has single handedly destroyed the Republican Party by trying to appeal to a single segment of the Party by selecting Governor Palin as his VP choice.

There have been efforts to politely ask Governor Palin to step aside, but to no avail.

So, Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker openly states that she wants Governor Palin to dropout.

The McCain campaign is an illustration of the adage, "You can put rocks in the oven, but it doesn't make them cookies!"

    • Posted By: george abrahams @ 09/28/2008 12:01:29 AM

finish the sentence "...but is a very quick study." "Still, Mrs. Bush said she has a lot of confidence in Palin. She said the Alaska governor has a lot of good common sense, and the first lady added that she is thrilled to have a chance to vote for Palin on the GOP ticket."

This is the BEST article I've read about Sarah Palin and her UN-readiness to be VP or President. Her ignorance coupled with her cow-girl approach that's [amazingly] been winning over the masses scares me to death. Surely America deserves better than this woman. Helen of North Carolina

Educator1: For the record, John McCain and Sarah Palin are running for President/Vice President of the United States; Barack Obama appears to be running for "First Citizen of the World." I hope I speak for the majority of American citizens when I say I could give a rat's ass about how the rest of the world "perceives" us. (And oh yes, I have a JD from a top ten law school in the US.)

I always surprise people, because my politics defy categories, and I have a very good sense of humor. I originally supported Giuliani as well, and watched in horror as his campaign went down in ignominious flames (ok, yes, I have a good vocabulary too - but it don't make me the shiznit, now, does it?) Post-Giuliani - what am I supposed to do? Not vote, or throw away a vote on Bob Barr? I went with McCain, and I loved the fact that he chose Palin. Why? Because I knew that a pro-life, Christian, NRA-member woman would drive the libs CRAZY, and I really relished the thought of it all. And the resulting feeding frenzy proved I was right. And more that that - there's a faint echo out there of politicians past - Abraham Lincoln comes to mind, and Harry Truman - not-so-well educated but highly principled and still in touch with what liberals derisively call "common" sense - and I quite frankly yearn for someone who might just fill this vacuum. Sarah Palin is popular precisely for this reason - she represents a collective yearning for a return to common-sense judgment by our elected leaders, and not the highly nuanced idiocy that results in disasters like the current subprime mess. Maybe its unfair to hang all of this on Sarah's slender shoulders - it's a lot of live up to right now, and other than someone like Ronald Reagan, I'm not sure if anyone could successfully take it on. But our history is replete with such characters - who came out of nowhere on a platform of common sense reform, and a "throw the bums out" mentality, and who helped make things better (at least for a little while.) If Sarah pulls an epic fail on October 2nd, I'll be disappointed - not just for her, but because it will mean the end (perhaps in my lifetime) in people's belief that our politicians should believe in the Constitution, limit their ambitions accordingly, and fight against corruption and those who claim the mantle of "populism" all the while working to increase their own claims to power.

Thank you Joecrandall. You have exactly demonstrated the change we need in this country. Your respect for the people and policies that have gotten our country, the best country in the world, us in our current financial and social position demonstrates exactly why we need to vote for Obama/Biden. A law degree is insignificant to this discussion, as is my PhD or status as a CEO. We are not running for president. There are plenty of lawyers, PhD's, CEO's, CFO's and otherwise educated people who caused this Wall Street disaster for example, or, as McCain said last night, now in jail due to corruption. And as for not caring about what other countries think of us, what do you think having allies does to our ability to win a war? Notice to whom we own the tremendous debt Bush built? For an educated man, you are showing great ignorance on this issue. And insluting me does not make you any more correct.

              • Posted By: joecrandall1 @ 09/27/2008 7:51:52 PM

I know precisely why "we" (and I use that term loosely) are in the position we are now in. It's summarized very well right here: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_hassett&sid=aSKSoiNbnQY0. To see Barney Frank working on the bailout plan, all the while decrying the supposed role Republicans played in it, is a disgusting display of all-too typical Democratic hubris. It's funny that you quote John McCain in your response - he very correctly pointed out the fact that we have political leaders in jail because of the subprime mess as proof that corruption is a systemic problem. So yes, I absolutely agree with you - we have highly-educated people in positions of power (both political and in the financial industry) who have failed to serve the interests of the American people. Piecing together the genesis of the subprime mess leads us to one inevitable conclusion - the key decisions along the way that created the monster, and the failure to stop the monster once created, lie at the feet of Democratic politicians. And returning to the original topic, our "perception" around the world - I guess what you're saying is that we have to elect Barack Obama because we need to repair our relationships with other countries in the event of war. What specific countries are you talking about here? That is, what countries do we need to effectuate Obama-based relationship repair in order to ensure that they'll be available in the event of war? And further, who exactly are we going to war with?

The instant we start using some vague sense of other nations' perception of us as some sort of a litmus test for our internal policies, we're doomed. American exceptionalism? You betcha - and unapologetic too. There's a reason that the U.S. has grown to become the dominant superpower since W.W.II - we haven't succumbed to socialist/liberal claptrap and we've managed to keep the American entrepreneurial spirit alive and well. It's incredibly foolhardy to believe that we should somehow take a step back from where we are now and measure our actions against, well, against what exactly? How the heck do you propose to get a good sense of what the rest of the world think about us? Polls? And how in the world do YOU (and/or educator1) purport to speak on behalf of this mythic, and monolithic, "world opinion" about the U.S.? It's absurd.

"Projection": a defense mechanism in which one attributes one???s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions to others. When it comes to fascism, liberals are in a league of their own - all instances of non-conforming thought must be shouted down, and the perpetrator subjected to vile personal attacks. Marx would be proud of many of comments on this thread (as would Saul Alinsky, Barack Obama's mentor.)

I suggest you do so at your earliest convenience, because the only way to understand this country is to understand its philosophic underpinnings. What passes for political discourse at this time in this country is laughable - please take a moment to consider how many of your political ideas are truly your own (based upon your own independent review of primary source material) as opposed to a set of simplistic idealogies that have been pounded into your head by your liberal masters.

So should we excuse you for being a loud-mouthed jingoist? Believe it or not, the rest of the world really DOES count; the US continually giving the finger to international law and Geneva Conventions(Mr. Lawyer) has not only turned the world against you, but it could make you literally a "rogue state", if the economic piracy of your multi-national corporations doesn't. Maybe you don't care what the rest of the world thinks, but as US dominance - economic and military - fades away under the weight of your own greed and arrogance (as it is already doing), you may regret your stupidity. Empires all fall, sooner or later - and yours will be a short one in the annals of history.

I think not caring a rat's ass about what the world thinks will further contribute to the demise of the US. Watch the EU gain even more strength, let alone China and the Indian sub-continent, as the US struggles under crushing debt.

As I watch the Republicans swoon over McCains improbable choice of Palin over many more qualified women and men I have to ask, are Republicans living in a fantasy? I agree, McCain in my mind has totally betrayed the Country with this chioce. it is the most cynical act in my memory. McCain obviously thinks women are emotionally driven and tht they can't think for themselves. Had McCain considered the gravity of his choice he would have picked someone who could lead due to his incapacity or demise. Instead he chose to add comedy to the campaign. I also wonder why Journalists are treating this person with deference. She's obviously not capable of this job. When asked to accept the position i understand her first response we, "What exactly does the Veep do"? I further wonder if journalists are simply not responding just to cover their futures. I think is harkens back to the Pre-Hitler era in Germany. Had the journalists sttod up then WWII might not have been a two-front war. In my estimation there is real danger that we may end up with a woman in office that fits McCains steroe-typical model. If so America is over.

Only a military intervention could have stopped Hitler after 1932. On the night of January 30, 1933, the Nazis organized a massive torchlight parade in Berlin to celebrate the appointment of Hitler as Chancellor of Germany. Journalists could do nothing to stop it,

Thanks so much for writing this article. Other than demonstrating a facility with the teleprompter, Sarah Palin appears to be an astoundingly inept vice presidential nominee. So much so that in an attempt to provide "balanced" election coverage the msm doesn't know how to handle McCain's reckless choice. That being said, I must confess that like one of your earlier responders (AjayKK), she is just so bad that sometimes I think this has to be part of some crazy GOP strategy for an October surprise - maybe they want to set the bar so low for her veep debate that she can't lose. In any event, on this decision alone McCain deserves to be roundly defeated on November 4.

I also am a registered Republican from Texas, however this issue goes way beyond party politics, foreign experience and leadership abilities. Americans have every right to demand and should expect their leaders to display and hopefully have a level of educational attainment such that they are able to speak clearly and effectively, compose proper sentences and form reasonable opinions from analysis of issues and situations. Palin has yet to even moderately exhibit any of this characteristics or abilities! And we don't even to begin to know whether she can read or write. My mother frequently reminded me that actions speak louder than words - and I believe she was absolutely right! It is no wonder the McCain campaign is shrouding her from the media. The GOP better wake up and demand John McCain jettison her soon or the fallout in the party after this is all over is not going to be a pretty sight.

With the exception of all of the experts that read and comment on this site, Palin is more like the average American than any other candidate. If change is what is needed, than we need the furthest thing from a typical politician as possible. Seems like Palin fits that description.

  • Posted By: Digester @ 09/27/2008 11:35:03 PM

I find it disturbing that so many people who have posted seem to feel compelled to defend Palin simply because she is a Republican.

The issue is that Palin cannot speak. To be a player on the national political stage requires a certain minimal command of the ability to string words together in comprehensible sentences that reflect a political position. Yes, George Bush???s often mangled syntax and malaproprisms invite ridicule from his political opponents, but when he speaks, he does manage to stay focused on his message and, while he may stumble verbally, he is able to express whatever concept he is trying to communicate.

Palin???s response to Couric???s question about the bailout wanders from unrelated topic to unrelated topic, and she is not merely inarticulate but incomprehensible. Can anyone explain what she meant when she said: ???But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the???it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track.???? What does health care reform have to do with the proposed Wall Street bailout, and how do the two link up with job creation?

The vice presidency is a job, and like all jobs there are certain minimal requirements that must be met for the applicant to be considered qualified for consideration. Regardless of party affiliation, there is a basic skill set that candidates must possess to be taken seriously.

I do not see how any Republican who legitimately cares about this country can support Sarah Palin for vice president. Would you also allow a doctor to operate on you whose only qualification was that she was Republican? The only responsible course for a Republican in this presidential election is to abstain.

  • Posted By: neos @ 09/27/2008 9:50:05 PM

    From the Couric interview.

COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy? Instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

PALIN: That's why I say, I like ever American I'm speaking with were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the tax payers looking to bailout. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy. Helping the ... Oh, it's got to be about job creation too. Shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americas. And trade we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive scary thing. But 1 in 5 jobs being created in the trade sector today. We've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.

Somewhere Senator McCain is beating his head against a wall......

love234america...you seem very angry. This article is not unctious in any way from my perspective.
Perhaps you do not like this journalist's position but that should probably not set you off in such a way. I found this article to be very illuminating!

Mylo..............you're dumber than hell. I can't believe that you actually don't know by now that Obama's father was born in KENYA, AFRICA. If you could get you're head out of Limbaugh's and Hannity's ass long enough you might learn the truth about Obama. If Palin is so great LET HER SPEAK. Tell me how she stands on any of the issues. You can't because she has never answered any questions with an answer that anyone can understand.

Hey Marvelous, wanna talk dumb, you are not black just because you are born in Africa! Look at his name it is all Arabic, his father was almost all Arabic, didn't you know Mr. Brainiac that there are millions of Arabs in Africa and they are not BLACK!

      • Posted By: 217217 @ 09/27/2008 11:32:59 PM

You idiot, mylo!! Just because you are muslim doesn't mean you can't be black! BUT his father was black AND was born to a muslim family - HOWEVER, Barack Sr. was NOT a muslim. NOR was Barack Jr. He is named after his father and his grandfather, Hussein(who was a muslim). Check your facts! Just go to wiki. Besides, what do you have against muslims or blacks?

First we'll compare the two Vice-Presidential candidates. Senator Biden regardless of what the Neo-Con smears say Has many years of experience on foreign matters. Biden has been a member or chair of the Foreign Relations Committee since 1997. He was a key player on the Bosnian question. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee. Senator Biden is currently the Chairman of both the Senate Foreign Relations Committee /Versus/ Palin zero-Nada-Nil-Nope on all National issues except her personal position on "the right to life" And yes on a clear day you can see the shores of Russia from pats of Alaska or you can stand in Alaska and pee in Canada. Now we'll compare the two Presidential candidates. Senator Obama, Committee on Foreign Relations, Committee on Veterans Affairs, Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and the committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs versus McCain committee on armed services (nothing to do with foreign policy). Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation (high gas prices and low business expectations) and the Committee on Indian affairs (Can they have gambling joints or not?). (Not the Indians of Asia just the American Indians).

Does Sarah Palin reflect John McCain's perception of the American electorate? If so, he must think we are all imbeciles.

They are going for the redneck population, there is a reverse correlation between voting Republican and number of people with higher education within state per capita. Check the Census, I did and its pure statistics. I think this year is different: a lot of African people and young women will vote. Democrats used Internet very well for both publicity and funding. Soccer mom is just a sad joke.

Calling all conservatives. I will ask again that one of you please translate the following passage of Gov. Palin.

    • Posted By: 2008Wonk @ 09/27/2008 11:27:10 PM

Yes, one really has to wonder... What, for instance, does health-care have to do in any meaningful way with the Wall Street bailout?

And how is "trade" a sector?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The truth shall set us free!! (and maybe Sarah too). And to LOVE234AMERICA:
You sound more hateful than anyone in the entire campaign, including the pitbull wearing lipstick. And you call yourself a Christian? Shame on you! But I guess since you seem to clearly be a republican, it comes as no surprise you are a hypocrite. Fareed simply pointed out the sad, painful truth. Sarah Palin is not only stupid but insane to think that anyone with the common sense God gave them would believe her bull***t!
Love, how do you even make it through a day being so ignorant?
