What sort of education is required to be considered "ready" for vice-president of the country? Is there a degree at stanford or harvard that certifies one as "VP qualified"? What sort of experience did Hillary Clinton have before running for Senator - how about running for president? Some in the media clailmed that Nancy Pelosi was qualified to be speaker of the house because she was a grandmother! WHAT!? Stop and take a moment and reflect on the way the media has treated liberal women in politics vs conservative women. Sarah Palin is their worst nightmare come true...and therefore she must be destroyed.

How about expert knowledge of the issues? A vetting process in private and in the media? How about a dozen televised debates so we can weed out the impractical from the bad from the dangerous from the dangerously unprepared? Not everyone deserves to be president; those who run study and get their affairs in order years, not two months before they run.

I never heard anyone in the media call Pelosi unprepared because she was a grandmother AND you are extrapolating that it was the "liberals" who said that? The Democratic party almost elected a woman candidate for president and she only lost to an African American. Palin is there for no other reason than McCain wanting Clinton's voters which he ain't getting! Had Clinton not been a candidate you'd still not know who Palin was. In the Democratic party we respect our minorities, take a look at our nominee and our large roster of Senators and Congress men and women. Tally that against the Republicans. No contest.

The capacity to come out with a coherent paragraph when asked a straight-forward question seems minimal to me. Sarah Palin has failed repeatedly to meet that standard.

Palin attended/jumped around 6 fouth tier colleges. How this is "better" than an Ivy League education I will never know.

    • Posted By: rfhirsch @ 09/27/2008 9:32:19 PM

You might make a comparison with the college record of President Truman. Of course he did not face any serious challenges during his Presidency that an Ivy league degree would have prepared him to deal with.

Well Fareed... I am a little more about substance over style. She is a Washington outsider and as such, is certainly a fish out of water on the national stage. But that doesn't mean she isn't qualified. What she has accomplished in Alaska didn't happen on it's own. She saw government corruption first hand, took it on and reformed it. Whether you admit it or not, that is quite an accomplishment. I can't help but think that if we had more people like that in government, we may not be facing a 700 billion dollar bailout.

BTW, I remember Obama telling us about his "foreign policy" experience. He stated his experience was based on the fact that he has family in Kenya and spent time as a kid in Jakarta. I find that at least as equally stupid as Palin's statement...yet I must have missed the interview where Ms. Couric asked Obama to explain it? Oh Fareed ...you didn't happen to post an article where you critiqued Obama's silly statement?

Hmm...it would appear neither Obama or Palin have any real "foreign policy" experience. But apparently democrats feel as long as one is as good as pretending to have it, as Obama is...then it some how doesn't matter. even though he is the one running for president.

Personally Fareed,...if it's all the same to you, I think I will wait until the debate is over to make my judgment on Mrs. Palin. I mean after all, if we are going to judge VP candidates based on how stupid they some times sound... then Biden wins hands down. From...under Obama's plan you will be able to buy a toaster... to stand up Chuck... to taxes are patriotic ...to FDR on TV...that man can hardly open his mouth without sticking his foot in it.

You see Fareed, ...you democrats are unwilling to hold yourself to the same standard as you wish to hold republicans. If Palin's record of accomplishments is nullified simply because she is on record as having uttered some dumb statements...then why doesn't that equally apply to Biden? Why is all Biden's ignorant gaffes and moronic statements not equally disqualify him from the VP position?

Let me get this straight...Biden is known as the biggest windbag of the senate, and yet when he makes a stupid statement...he his just be "Joe" shooting from the hip. But if Palin makes a stupid statement...she has no business running for VP? Must be a liberal thing...as it seems quite hypocritical to me.

The Only reason This guy has a cable program and is a contributor for Newsweek is that he looks a lot like a new form of movie monster that has been breed by other pundits to scare people. Just look at the guys face...eeerie...at least Palin is human.

    • Posted By: lhummer @ 09/27/2008 9:30:31 PM

That's right, when you can't attack his arguments, attack the person. I'm probably being kind to you when I say it's a sign of third grade mentality.

Someone or something deliver us from Palin. A tragedy thrust upon the American voters. Never mind a female Candidate or a male candidate, give us one with some intelligence & humility. I'm, embarassed & saddened.
I'm frustrated and insulted, I.m bothered and depressed. Send the lady home today, please Sen. McCain, I implore you.

  • Posted By: jameskbachman @ 09/27/2008 9:28:41 PM

Well, the first George Bush got away with Dan Quayle. This time, with so much at stake, people will not vote for McCain/Palin after the VP debate which will show what Sarah knows or doesn't know about national issues. The initial presentation at the Republican Convention simply showed she could read a teleprompter. After that, it's been downhill for Sarah. McCain will have to say that the VP choice doesn't matter.

  • Posted By: FlinchMan @ 09/27/2008 9:25:54 PM

Looks like the McCain staffer code-words, tonight, are "gone down the toilet", "in decline", "journalism failing." McCain needs better staffers, with a richer set of ideas. True conservatives don't shoot the messenger, they simply get the message. You guys are embarrassing us.

  • Posted By: maristella @ 09/27/2008 9:24:48 PM

Would do you expect of journalists? Katie Couric agrees with Joe Biden that Roosevelt was President in 1929, Fareed Zakaria agrees with the former Prime Minister of Singapore that Iraq may break into three parts - Shias, Sunnis and Kurds (what's wrong with that assumption, Mr. Zakaria?). They substitute knowledge with arrogance, and usually they get away with it.

  • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 09/27/2008 9:24:04 PM

When this election is over and we get the inside scoop on both campaigns, I am sure we'll read about the civil war and smiles-through-the-pain that McCain staffers are engaging at this very moment. I am convinced that many of them think the boat is not going to make it so they might as well milk it for all it's worth.

If McCain loses it will be interesting to see the Republican primaries for 2012. Palin will undoubtedly run and watch those republicans who support her now vilify her to no end, using the THE OPPOSITE arguments
they are using right now. They are circling the wagons but this is a tragicomedy that could turn into a nightmare.

  • Posted By: Peanutfarmer @ 09/27/2008 8:50:49 PM

Hey folks. Wake up. Obama will win the election with or without liberal media bias of Newsweek. Don't you understand that he is the chosen one? He even has his own logo, doesn't place his hand over his heart during the National Anthem and is associated with anti-American people. That must mean that he is above the rest of us. Obviously he is elite and untouchable. God is in control. We are in the end times and if He wants this anti-Christ moron to become president, there's no writer in the world that can convince anyone otherwise.

    • Posted By: Scientist4Obama @ 09/27/2008 9:03:11 PM

Peanut head, get some education. Oh I forgot you are anti-education.....the top of your ticket was the bottom 6th in his class of 600+ and the bottom of your ticket went through 6 different colleges to get one degree.
Obama=Elite because.............he was raised by a single mom who occasionally used food stamps, worked his way through college...................came back to work for the poorest of Chicago to be a on a meager salary..............got into Harvard Law School...became President of Harvard Law Review...............went back to the same poor community to be a community organizer by refusing million dollar jobs...............owns one house and one car between him and his wife.
He is the Real American Dream............which is totally lost in last 8 years and thanks to people like you might be made a thing of the past.
So do you want to rewrite your post on Obama's elitism?
McCain cheated on his wife to marry a heiress who is btw a barbie doll. He owns 7 houses and 13 cars and not all of his cars are American! Who is an elitist and out of touch. He hardly goes to church........so my dear friend if you truly believe in anti-Christ............McCain fits the bill!

The poor working class obama got "help" with his Harvard education from Dr. Khalid Abdullah Tariq al Mansour a/k/a Donald Warren. He is worth only a little over a million but just like he stopped taking 900 million in earmarks the day he started campaigning, you have to wonder about the true state of his income as well.

    • Posted By: Scientist4Obama @ 09/27/2008 8:55:26 PM

You are truly a peanut head! Get some education!

  • Posted By: neos @ 09/27/2008 9:23:45 PM

It would be treason to vote for a ticket with Palin on it.
McCain's reckless and rash gimmicky gamble will not pay off.

  • Posted By: Peanutfarmer @ 09/27/2008 9:21:53 PM

Hey jefflz. You moron. She's more ready to become president than Osama bin Obama.

  • Posted By: FlinchMan @ 09/27/2008 9:21:50 PM

"You people need..." Remember, Zakaria is very favorable to Bush in several areas. Here is an independent, non-partisan journalist, showing how McCain is flying a ROFL-copter to Kill-us-all-istan. He's absolutely right, by the way. We conservatives must deal with that truth, just like grown-ups.

  • Posted By: champgrow @ 09/27/2008 9:20:59 PM

In response to the following: "BTW, I remember Obama telling us about his "foreign policy" experience. He stated his experience was based on the fact that he has family in Kenya and spent time as a kid in Jakarta. I find that at least as equally stupid as Palin's statement" ---- Living in a country and expeirencing life among that country's people gives the ultimate insight into what those people face on a daily basis. You grasp at straws to compare what Palin said, that one can see some remote area of "Russia" from her home state of Alaska, to actually living among the people.

  • Posted By: fairtaxlarz @ 09/27/2008 8:21:35 PM

The attacks on Governor Palin are great. It shows how left wing socialists like yourself will do or say anything to get into power. Governor Palin has at least as much experiance as your Presidential candidate but I'm sure we will never see that truth in your column. People like you make me sick.

    • Posted By: Nataya13 @ 09/27/2008 9:20:45 PM

If Palin has all this great experience why don't they allow her to be interviewed, why don't they let her take questions from the people. She can't put a coherent series of sentences together and if she can't take on an American reporter she clearly doesn't have the experience needed to be VP.

  • Posted By: jefflz @ 09/27/2008 9:17:38 PM

Can anyone honestly stand up and say that Palin is ready to be Vice President? She has made a complete fool of herself in her conversation with Couric. Her responses were garbled, at times incoherent talking points that she had tried to memorize but they were often not even relevant to the question. Palin supporters: If you are not a trained public speaker and have a poor education does that mean Palin is ready for national office because she is like you? Don't we need the best qualified people to run our country, not our next door neighbors? McCain is making a mockery of this election. His "debate is off/now its on" stunt and his choice of Palin are proof positive of McCain's shoot-from-the-hip lack of judgment. We must reject the McCain/Palin ticket as a matter of national security if nothing else.

  • Posted By: patsy13 @ 09/27/2008 9:02:13 PM

As I read the article on Katie Couric's interview, I was reminded of paper's that I graded over the years where the student had memorized facts but did not understand the facts and just mixed them all up, not knowing which fact went to which question. I hope she is asked questions that will require her to formulate her own response. People need to know . Biden is capable of being President. Think before you vote.

    • Posted By: Jash9 @ 09/27/2008 9:17:30 PM

Papers does not have an apostrophe in this usage. I'm glad you didn't grade any of mine.
