Why are Fareed and the other detractors of Palin have so much bitterness? This article & many of the reactions that are borderline vile are really signs of insecutity. I still do not think OBama is qualified to be President, but I will not personally assult him like many here have assulted Palin.

Why is it vile to question our would-be leaders? Come on, people, let's call a spade a spade: This woman is objectively unprepared to lead this country; I am merely a concerned citizen and from what little we've seen of Palin's interviews, I can tell I know more about the issues than she does and I'm not even a politician! This is like somebody needing brain surgery who finds out he knows more about anatomy than his own surgeon.

Please, don't compare Obama to Palin: Obama has been vetted, interviewed, debated and tested for years, we know what he knows. Palin could potentially be president and has only given three interviews, two of which clearly show she doesn't even have a fundamental knowledge of the issues.

We could be facing a serious economic depression, do you really want this woman at the helm?

If Deficient Biden Debate better try fission a differnt hole.

I guess what I find so baffling is the sheer hypocrisy of this article. Seriously ... do you listen to Obama? He may be more articulate than most, but the hot air he's blowing is filled with so little substance. Are you really listening to him?

Obama experienced for presidency? Please. I am a registered democrat, but I'm watching my party support Obama purely driven by the hatred of Bush. It's as if Obama supporters are running so hard from Bush, looking over their shoulders as they see him fade into the distance, and not aware of the scary arms they're running into. Yikes. Obama scares me to death. No experience. None. None! My God, wake up and trust someone like McCain. He may be far from ideal, but his character and experience simply have to trump this "inexperienced newbie."

I am an Ind and I am not truly that fond of McCain, but with LipStick boy being the other choice, It is not really that hard to figure out which one to vote for. What you said is spot on!

The way the Libs have tried to crucify Sarah is sad and desperate looking.
I figure she must be a pretty good choice since it is making them so upset and violent. So much for being a tolerant bunch the libs always preach. They are only tolerant if you believe and think just like them.

Sarah Palin may have been a good mayor and has worked hard for Alaska. Her belief system works for the far right. She is a champion of off shore drilling. For these reasons plus the fact that she is a woman she was selected by John Mc Cain. All well and good and let the campaign begin. There is one thing though, I am not sure that John Mc Cain gave much consideration of whether Sarah Palin is ready for the next level of public serviceservie.

I guess your idea of a worthy VP is one of your pundit peers -- Keith Olberman, perhaps? Your sneering column is further evidence of Newsweek's sad decline.

  • Posted By: Ditcatcher @ 09/27/2008 7:22:59 PM

She's as qualified for vice as Obama is for Pres..Doesn't the thought of Obama, Reid & Mrs P working together give you chills? Mrs P said she was for change. She did, she presides over the worse rated Congress in the history of ratings. Their ratings make Pres. Bush's look like a rock stars. They have done basically nothing except call Bush names, our troops killers and their constant "We can't Win" comments. Not to mention blaming every thing on Bush.

    • Posted By: lips-are-moving @ 09/27/2008 9:12:39 PM

Obama seems to have held his own, if not bested McCain in last night's debate on foreign policy, allegedly his weakest area. If he is not qualified where does that put McCain?

  • Posted By: ccjroberts @ 09/27/2008 9:11:11 PM

Fareed Zakaria for Vice President, right? I guess that's not going to happen because your own qualifications to do anything except write indescribably boring, pompous magazine columns are nonexistent. Newsweek long ago forfeited any credibility because of its clear and continual bias toward Democrats. Why not just hire Keith Olberman to do politics and sports for your increasingly worthless magazine.

To rbeat8499: obviously, you have not watched Palin's interviews with Couric nor Gibson. if you had, you would understand that the "education" Palin needs to have is one in which she understands basic foreign policies and basic economic theories. she does not have a BASIC grasp of the issues. it was self-destructive for your party to put her forth as the vp nominee. you deserve to suffer the consequences.

  • Posted By: jethromayham @ 09/27/2008 9:08:42 PM

Palin sounds like the typical person that never reads the newspaper except for the gosip section. She's downright scary if she was called to answer that 0300 hours phone call.

  • Posted By: PogoLA @ 09/27/2008 8:47:43 PM

Both McCain and Palin do seem to have a lot in common with their supporters. A certain kind of illiteracy. Half the supporters can't form a simple sentence, and those who can often can't spell. It's pathetic how easily Americans are duped. Republicans have been suckng the blood out of the middle and lower classes for decades while the same sad group of people continue supporting them for all the wrong reasons. Literacy could change America.

    • Posted By: JournalismIsDead @ 09/27/2008 8:53:39 PM

Golly gosh durn it, I laughed at that so darn hard, I almost couldn't breathe. Yes, Republican entitlement programs are just collapsing the middle class. Those gosh darn conservatives! I mean, they actually expect people to work and contribute. I say MORE ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS! Let's put more people on the dole and have endless government handouts. SOCIALISTS OF THE WORLD UNTIE...I mean unite. Good grief.

      • Posted By: rac501 @ 09/27/2008 9:05:43 PM

Try and try to stay on topic. Your rambling reply to PogoLA adds yet another dimension: not only do the illiterates fail at simple grammar--like improper CAPS all over the place-- they also fail at reading comprehension 101.

      • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 09/27/2008 9:04:12 PM

Yeah, its only in RepubliCON land that stockbrokers and investment bankers get a government bailout when their own greed and dishonesty is about to bring Wall St. down. Workers can do without any help from a librul guberment and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

      • Posted By: PogoLA @ 09/27/2008 9:02:21 PM

Your parody has a twang to it.

  • Posted By: whynot? @ 09/27/2008 8:55:26 PM

"You know it's true I don't have the foreign policy experience that Joe Biden has.....

Truer words have never been written! The Repubs are in in disarray - no cogent arguments can be made to support Palin as either a viable candidate or as proof of McCains judgment - beyond his own political needs of the moment.

    • Posted By: dem no more! @ 09/27/2008 9:05:43 PM

Just like a hypocritical Dem to take it out of context. When all else fails...Lie baby lie!

  • Posted By: blave @ 09/27/2008 9:05:10 PM

    rich,
if you needed brain surgery you would probably seek out an elite neurosurgeon. if you fly, chances are that you'd prefer an elite pilot. by embracing palin, you seem to be arguing that in the case of running this country, you'd rather have another 8 years of a leader like george bush. if you're happy with the state of our economy, the way our wars have been handled and our current standing in the world, please vote for palin/mccain. enjoy the debates.

  • Posted By: cfrei0227 @ 09/27/2008 8:25:39 PM

Oh my goodness, are you people mental? I suppose it is just too much to admit that your parties "maverick" VP candidate is so unqualified, so out of her league that it is laughable. How long can the world possibly watch her, cringing and actually feeling bad for her as she gets more and more over her head? she simply barfs up a conglomeration of all of the talking points her advisors are desperately hoping will substitute for lack of experience. It is embarrassing.
What is equally embarrassing is your acceptance of her jibberish and clear confusion as completely valid, a futile and desperate effort to try to make her out to be something she is not.
If this woman gets anywhere near the white house, we are all screwed.

    • Posted By: clemson1 @ 09/27/2008 9:05:03 PM

No sir. you are incorrect. If Barack H.Obama is in office,
Yes we as Americans are screwed.

Someone please say congradulations to Osama Bin Baby - he succeeded we are almost done did bankrupt give the gov. a few more days. Bush failed totally and both Demo. and Rep. are responsible. Maybe time to redo the constitution of WE THE PEOPLE seems to have been forgotten.

  • Posted By: ducking sniper fire @ 09/27/2008 9:04:29 PM

We are pissed because as Republicans we cannot with good conscience vote for a ticket that has Sarah Palin on it. It would be doing a disservice to our country, to the men and women in the armed forces, to our children and to women, I won't vote for Obama, I'll just sit it out.

  • Posted By: MPLS voter @ 09/27/2008 9:03:53 PM

At the very least Palin should be able to answer questions from the media on day 1. The job only gets harder from there! The fact that she only recently obtained a Passport shows that she wasn't planning on overseas travel until after she was chosen. The GOP could've done a better job introducing her to the national stage, and I think the media would've been less suspicious with more openess and access. Passing out phony "handmade" signs at the RNC does not help one's cause. The more spin, the more scruitiny you invite.

  • Posted By: dem no more! @ 09/27/2008 8:41:46 PM

Palin should look America in the eye and say, "You know it's true I don't have the foreign policy experience that Joe Biden has. And you know what...Neither does the top of his ticket!" Getting your passport stamped on numerous photo-ops around the world does not count as "policy" experience! And the only reason people think Obama did so well at the debate is because expectations were so low to begin with. It's kind of like having your child at their first hockey game and being thrilled because he managed to slide the puck on the right direction even if he couldn't score.. When this election is over, the liberal media will be left out on the ledge. Go ahead, JUMP!

    • Posted By: rac501 @ 09/27/2008 8:56:36 PM

This is not just about foreign policy experience or relative lack thereof. Obama has accomplished himself on a world stage, has shown the vital characteristics most of us deem incipient to the challenges of a world player. Palin has barely proven herself in other ways that are irrelevant to the current election. McCain's choice shows contempt for the intelligence of the American people, or he is willing to lessen the office of the Vice Presidency/Presidency for the sake of his own hide. He's been swallowing so much of Rove's advice he can barely pronounce Akhmadinejad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KspQbrWPfnc

      • Posted By: dem no more! @ 09/27/2008 9:02:59 PM

Spoken like a true elitist. And yet, Obama was on the stump today pandering to the middle class because he is one of them. Please! Just like he was down in Florida pandering to the female vote after his wife made her insulting ,sexist comments. Obama's slogan should be, "Whatever it takes, whoseever a** I have to kiss, I'm your guy!"

  • Posted By: jethromayham @ 09/27/2008 9:02:05 PM

Palin is a disaster and anyone voting for the McCain/palin ticket have their heads in the sand. It's too bad most Americans only believe in negative ads. Our great country in imploding?

  • Posted By: joecrandall1 @ 09/27/2008 5:59:49 PM

Oh, now I get it! Sarah is someone with common sense, someone who recognizes the obvious connection between Islam and Islamic terrorism. Folks like Fareed Zakaria? Well: http://www.amnation.com/vfr/archives/003710.html. Sarah clearly is not someone who would play the role of "useful idiot" so of course Fareed wants to insult her and attempt to undermine her candidacy.

    • Posted By: gater23 @ 09/27/2008 6:53:13 PM

If you are so educated, why do you feel the need to use such disdain in your discussion? I have always been of the opinion that those who are informed do not need the gutter. If you are such a believer in Sarah Palin, why do you not gather the troops as Republicans and demand that she campaign openly and accessibly as all other candidates? You should be insistant that she be able to speak for herself and define herself. You should also demand that that she be able to continue to perform her own job duties as governor of Alaska - all other candidates are responsible for their jobs. Why are you not calling for equality and transparency?

      • Posted By: joecrandall1 @ 09/27/2008 9:01:55 PM

Well, how precisely do you know that I haven't done that? I won't get into specifics, but I have personally contacted folks with the McCain campaign to tell them to do precisely what you're suggesting. What else you got?

  • Posted By: JournalismIsDead @ 09/27/2008 8:48:57 PM

It's because of articles like this that I don't subscribe to Newsweek anymore. Journalism is dead in the United States. May it RIP, it has been buried and is being mourned by many of us who remember nonbiased reporting of actual factual information and not opinion. I long for the old days.

    • Posted By: rac501 @ 09/27/2008 9:01:52 PM

Exactly what facts in this opinion piece are making you so morbid? Haven't Op pieces existed for a long long time...?
