All the things you mention can be applied to Obama at least as much as Sarah. Also don't think that the Bush tax cuts cost the country income when in truth it added income to the treasury. McCain and Palin are right when they say the problem is spending. The Congress would be in Jail if they ran a business like they run the country. If you applied the same standards to Biden and his gaffs as you apply to Palin, you might have some creability, but as usual you have none.

Obama is nothing like Palin. He has the guts to speek with (not just to) the American people. He is intelligent and articulate, and he shows a clear understanding of domestic and global issues. This reminds me of the Gore and Bush debate when Bush accused Gore of using "fuzzy math." To him, ANY math was "fuzzy" and he banked on the fact that the majority of Americans shared his mentality. They sympathized with Bush and fell for his Rovian ploy. When will we wise up and choose the head of the class instead of the flunky.

Oh my goodness, are you people mental? I suppose it is just too much to admit that your parties "maverick" VP candidate is so unqualified, so out of her league that it is laughable. How long can the world possibly watch her, cringing and actually feeling bad for her as she gets more and more over her head? she simply barfs up a conglomeration of all of the talking points her advisors are desperately hoping will substitute for lack of experience. It is embarrassing.
What is equally embarrassing is your acceptance of her jibberish and clear confusion as completely valid, a futile and desperate effort to try to make her out to be something she is not.
If this woman gets anywhere near the white house, we are all screwed.

NATO fighters again accompany Russian bombers near Alaska 12:11 | 09/ 04/ 2008 MOSCOW, April 9 (RIA Novosti) - NATO fighters accompanied Russian Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers on a regular strategic patrol flight on Wednesday, a Russian Air Force spokesman said. Four Bear bombers and four Il-78 aerial tankers conducted a patrol mission over the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean and performed aerial refueling, which is the second exercise of Russian bombers near Alaska in three weeks. "During the flight over neutral waters near Alaska, the Russian planes were accompanied by NATO fighters," Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky said. Interceptions of Russian combat aircraft by NATO fighters have been a common occurrence since Russia resumed strategic bomber patrol flights over the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans last August, following an order signed by President Vladimir Putin. Drobyshevsky reiterated that regular patrols of Russian strategic bombers do not pose a threat to other countries, and Russia always issues prior warnings of their patrols. He said that the main purpose of these missions was to train pilots in instrument flight and aerial refueling.

You must be planning to vote McCain because Obama doesn't have any experience in any executive capacity, he doesn't even know how many states he would be governing(57, he thinks), and half the time he has supposedly spent in the Senate participating in govt. he has been out campaigning for a new job. I guess that leaves him to compare community organizer to governor of Alaska. I'll take real experience to a fast talker any day.

And for the next act: Palin will hold a wedding for her daughter to get another "family vallues" bounce. When will Americans realize that complex problems have complex solutions? Slogans lead to simplistic action, see Mr. Bush. Ms. Paliin may be a suitable Governor for a no-tax, live for free state, but she is simply unprepared to hold a world view or a consequential postion in federal executive management. It is not patriotic to be dumb.

I am still waiting for somebody to tell me how Obama will bring more jobs to the country all the while he increases taxes on the folks who will provide them?

    • Posted By: PanosQ @ 09/27/2008 8:22:32 PM

During the Clinton years we had more taxes and more jobs. During the Bush years we had less taxes and less jobs. These are indisputable numbers. What exactly is your point? When exactly in our history your model worked? Maybe during the Reagan years, but it happened on a "credit card".

While I was never going to vote for McCain, I did have an immense respect for his dedication to our country. After his Palin choice, however, it became clear that he care more about getting elected than the 300 million Americans who would be stuck with Palin if something (God forbid) were to happen to McCain. He knows she does nothing to improve his ability to govern. Honestly, we all know she is unequipped. Palin supporters like her because she reminds them of themselves (shared religious values, family responsibilities, etc.) However, when these folks are honest they realize that they are not equipped to be president either. Let us push past our own narcissism and elect someone who knows more than we do about running the country.

Thanks, Fareed, for saying what so many are thinking ... and some of us more out-loud than others. The only thing the detractors of this article have to say in defense of Palin is that Obama is inexperienced. Welllll, I'll take intelligent, well-educated, and well-informed over blithering idiocy any day of the wekk and twice on Sunday. Totally unpredictable McCain and no-clue Palin are a very frightening proposition. This Eisenhower Republican has reached her own cringe-limit. I'll be voting for intelligence, thoughtful due-consideration, and plain common sense on Nov 4th. That equals Obama/Biden.

I am a registered Arizona Independent and I am just sick about John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. I have spent many hours conducting significant research into her background, positions and character, hoping to find that she is even remotely ready to be Vice President of the United States. I have found nothing to support his bizarre decision, and after this last week of Palin interviews, I am just dumbfounded! John McCain is a 72 year old man - fully 7 years older than the average retirement age in the U.S. He is pursuing what is arguably the most stressful job in the world at a time when the economy, energy, the war, climate change, healthcare, social security, homeland security and our world position are all peaking as vexing issues. And what does he do? He has chosen an ill-equipped running mate for reasons that I absolutely cannot comprehend. What is he thinking?! This strikes me as pure hubris and shows horrible judgment! I can only conclude that John McCain is not ready to be President of the United States. The die is cast - I am voting for Obama-Biden.

Hey Zakaria. Why don't you go back to where you came from and take your liberal sexist comments with you.

  • Posted By: lindady @ 09/27/2008 8:19:34 PM

What scares me about Palin is that she actually accepted the VP nomination without a blink. She thinks she can be a VP and maybe President of the U..S., and McCain feels the same. How on earth could she run our country when you listen to her answers to interviewers questions, she bumbles along making no sense, never answering the question, clearly unable to becaue she doesn't know much at all about the issues.

She's as qualified for vice as Obama is for Pres..Doesn't the thought of Obama, Reid & Mrs P working together give you chills? Mrs P said she was for change. She did, she presides over the worse rated Congress in the history of ratings. Their ratings make Pres. Bush's look like a rock stars. They have done basically nothing except call Bush names, our troops killers and their constant "We can't Win" comments. Not to mention blaming every thing on Bush.

    • Posted By: PanosQ @ 09/27/2008 8:19:12 PM

Which of all the "humongous" disasters that happened to our country the last 8 years, you do NOT attribute to Bush?

  • Posted By: kja123 @ 09/27/2008 8:18:52 PM

Well, I see a new form of schizophrenia has emerged with one personality demanding a certain minimum of "experience" which seems to be defined as more than the object of your derision has, while the other alter ego accepts as qualifications whatever his guy has. Huh? You really need to stop pretending to be a journalist and go for the ultimate achievement you can do - political hack.

  • Posted By: Eleanora53 @ 09/27/2008 8:18:48 PM

Well said. I'm as willing to give Sarah a chance and listen to her as anyone. And now that she has finally begun to speak, with the election only a few weeks away, surprise, we find out she's incomprehensible. And apparently if you either disagree with her or try to get any information about her, you are sexist or unAmerican or both. Sarah's a foreign policy expert and I've got a bridge to sell you, the real bridge to nowhere. Thanks but no thanks!

Hey Zakaria. Why don't you go back to where you came from and take your sexist beliefs with you.

  • Posted By: Mjw2222 @ 09/27/2008 8:17:11 PM

Whew! Relief! After reading this article and many others, I feel less confused and bewildered as to why Sarah Palin had been chosen in the first place. I agree very much with Mr. Zakaria that this woman is feisty and has made bold moves in her state. But after listening to interviews, I'm not sure she's quite ready for vp/presidency, let alone the situation we now face at this time in America's history. Makes me question McCain's common sense. It's looking more and more like possibly a superficial tactical move to win the election, rather than a well-thought out decision.

  • Posted By: RanBeMe @ 09/27/2008 8:16:59 PM

Absolutely right on the mark! How anyone with a half a brain can justify Sarah Palin as qualified to be a Commander in Chief is beyond me and all those people who really care about this country and the world. I refuse to believe that she was chosen for any other reason than to insure a loss to McCain but then the Palin Phenomenon took place and now they have to deal with it. She scares even the conservative journalists and analysts. Wake up America!

  • Posted By: newmoon @ 09/27/2008 7:05:23 PM

Palin will talk alright next week when she mops the floor with Biden. Who by the way is part of the problem just like Obama.

    • Posted By: DaNoot @ 09/27/2008 8:16:28 PM

I can hardly wait - maybe she can look even worse than she did with gently, sympathetic Katie Couric though it's hard to imagine how. Gibberish indeed - bring on the debate!
