Doesn't it bother you true believers that for, what? a month now?, the McCain handlers have done everything they can to keep MissSarah under the radar. They play up the mythological feminist warrior but keep the real candidate hidden from public view in anything but the most controlled circumstances. There are four candidates for Pres and VP. Three of them are in front of every camera and every microphone they can find. One is kept in the closet and only allowed out when there is no way she can display the poverty of the thinking that led to her selection. Never in recent history has a candidate been so hidden from the American people. Why?

McCain is POW (Prisoner Of Wasilla). His Veep pick was purely political, and Palin was not chosen because she was competent nor even because she was a woman, but because she was a theocon Bush & co could trust : she doesn't have the sound judgement to be a President but she will pick the kind of Supreme Justices these enemies of democracy need.

Bonedry, Bill Clinton was asked to provide his medical records for years (more for entertainment reasons than anyone really caring if Al Gore was any closer to the driver's seat). So as far as being able to vote for someone who won' t provide them, your boy pretty much set that precedent.

Two words for the people piling on Palin: Geraldine Ferraro. How was a first-term rep from another flaky state (NY) any more qualified to run for VP? I voted for her back then, in fact, and will have no problem voting for the even more qualified Ms. Palin this year.

Palin's real contribution is her ability to dogwhistle. But to do that, she has to be kept away from thinking people and in front of teleprompters.

Please, let Palin continue on the ticket! Every reasonable person, Republican or Democrat or Independent, has started to recognize what a disaster she would be in high office. She's strictly small-time, but a great gift to the Democrats. May she continue to bring down the Repugs! Go Sarah!

Zakaria, as usual you come across as a smart ass. Governor Palin may have performed poorly in one or two interviews. Certainly, she was not prepared to say, "Katie, I do not know the story of Senator McCain's attempts to INCREASE regulation in the past. That is a question for him." Trying to trip her up has been successful; because, she has not had the experience of dealing with national media vultures. It will come. But, the governmental issues you mentioned were only dealt with successfully by one executive out of all four candidates for national office: Governor Sarah Palin.

However, she is not running for president. She is running for vice-president. She will not make policy, but merely assist and advise. (See US Constitution.) Perhaps you prefer Senator Biden, whose every public utterance includes an awful gaffe. He is completely unconcerned with facts; and, he has never, ever run anything, nor made an executive decision. Like you, he has only voted, and expounded.

Those who can, do. Those who cannot, write about it. And many of those show their inadequacies through their snotty comments.

Robert, surely you jest. And the fact that you make these statements seriously goes to show that you are truly anti-American and stand against everything this country stands for including competence, ability and truthfulness... I feel sorry for you, but the rest of us thinking American Patriots will save you and your ilk from disaster by defeating these babbling buffoons.

Gee Fareed... do you have a horse in this race? Give me a break. Palin has WAY more experience that BO (the biggest empty suit since the Inviable Man)... and BTW, her answers to Katie are consistent with the Conservative movement. Also consider that she has as much experience as Bill Clinton when he ran and a TON more character. Just stop... BO = higher taxes (even with the current financial issues) and I challenge to show me how that's good for any economy on any level.

you should be congradulated on over coming your own problems sir. it's true not everyone can read or write and to do so born as you were,,, what with your head up your ass and all,,, deserves praise. not as much as mrs. palin has cause to recieve but then again your just a man with his head up his ass trying to keep your job.

So, what on earth does this mean?

  • Posted By: poet1b @ 09/27/2008 8:11:48 PM

She botched these two questions, and everyone is talking about it, but, the columnist repeated the things that she touched on as critical problems facing our nation. Sounds more like she failed to link her comment together adequately. The bailout is supposed to keep everything running so that all thes additional problems can be eventually worked out. The bailout is being sold as necessary to prevent far greater problems. I have yet to hear anyone explain exactly how the bailout is supposed to save the economy. Questions like this are something that more veteran pol's learn to talk around, and that is what Palin needs to do better.

Candidates can't be specific and give details about how they will tackle issues "when" they are elected. That would be foolish campaigning. They can only:speak in generalities, what they would like to do, the direction they would like to take this country, whether it be bringing our troops home, infusing additional monies toward education, health care, bailing out Wall Street or banning abortions. Those are GENERALITIES; but once they take office they are faced with what the previous administration has left. The depth and breadth of damage that the current administration will leave will be GIGANTIC. The distrust that the country's population feels with respect to the ability of government and Congress to actually do something, much less doing something beneficial for the populace runs deep.

My feeling is that the a partial bailout will happen, but the next administration will be left to " figure out" what to do next. In all likelihood whoever is elected president will be blamed for future financial woes of the global economy. We have a habit of very quickly forgetting the great faults of prior administrations and we expect things to "turn around" instantly. Technology has trained us well.

With that said, I will vote for the Obama-Biden ticket. I see the McCain-Palin campaign as being fraught with administrative and managerial problems. If Mr. McCain can't send his VP running mate out to be even casually interviewed, then he's made a big mistake. I see the Obama campaign as being better run. Mr. Obama has surrounded himself with a variety of advisors. He may not have the experience that Mr. McCain has in Congress, but I believe that the way campaigns are run is a great indicator of how an administration will be run.

I was a Hillary supporter but she lost because she chose to surround herself with people who gave her advice that didn't work. With that said, though I would have loved to have Hillary running for president now, her campaign failed.

All I hear, when Sarah Palin speaks, is a tangled knot of platitudes and catchphrases. Not since Dan Quayle have we had the specter of raising to the second-highest office in the land a gaffe-producing talking head, with nothing to offer except fanatical zeal. They say that nobody votes for, or against, a ticket on the basis of the vice-president, but this is an exceptional case. I already think McCain's "clean up Washington" campaign is rumbling nonsense, but even if I didn't, Palin would be enough to send me into the arms of the Democrats. I'm not thrilled by Obama's pick of Biden (yawn) but Palin is so much worse, you have to go back to Quayle to find a point of comparison.

Thank you all of those who see the light. Liberals are not sending the Republican VP pick any more grief than she deserves. The election is really a marathon job interview, and so far John McCain has made a pick that any thinking HR manager would question. I would have long talk with anyone who would recommend such a unqualified individual. Should fate bring in Sarah Palin as the go-to-gal in case of John Mcain death, I think I'll consider living somewhere else. scootie'smom

What amazes me, is that Sarah Palin actually accepted the VP nomination, and without a blink. She actually believes she is capable of being VP or even President of the U.S. This is what scares me. That this person who obviously doesn't have the knowledge, information, wisdom, experience, and capability to lead our nation is still hanging in there, doing interviews not able to answer the questions because she doesn't have a clue.

    doesn't know

What McCain is not getting is that Americans, Main St, is more scared of losing their dreams, more concerned about our families, more afraid of not being able to meet our basic needs of health care, paying our bills, etc, than we are of the terrorists.

In other words, American people have a lower opinion of the people in power, corporate America who steals from the poor to give to the rich and politicians who ignores our needs than we are of the terrorists an ocean away.

At least we expect the terrorists to try to crush the American dream, but for our own representatives to do so is ten times more frightening.

??? Any of you Palinistas wonder where the bimbo candidate was last night? Biden was in front of every microphone he could find telling people what he thought of the debate. That is his job as a VP candidate. Where was MissSarah? Hiding from the press. Hiding from the American people lest they see how ill-prepared she is for the awesome job she has been tapped to fill.

Fareed has presented facts with appropriate and bold analysis. He deserves credit for this objective report.
Adding to the observations are a few statements/expressions from Mrs. Palin that fall under "lies" or "untrue" category, for example, stating that she didn't even blink to accept the offer, etc. underlines equally poor
judgment of her own to chase fame and the VP position as personal achievement. There is no room for service to America or the American people here. Mr. McCain has acted like the joker, against America, in a most cynical fashion. It is also amazing to see how the stereotypical republicans appear to praise McCain and Mrs. Palin without any regard to reality. This mentality enhances decay of America's strength within and in the International arena. Voters should boldly ask a question: Does the candidate challenge you, inspire you and make you think of better future? Also, the republicans may ask: Does Mrs. Palin appear to be a good candidate to participate in a national level Republican Primary? When Mr. McCain repeats "I know how to fix things and trust me or believe me", that is precisely the most scary scenario the voter faces. This is a recipe for self-destructing campaign or candidacy.

Have not read a single comment. Let me say to my friends who are Republicans the truth hurts--it should teach us lessons along with the pain. For you to pummel this writer for speaking the plain truth in her own words means you have not listened or learned anything by watching this unfold. i wish Senator McCain a long life and Governor Palin a successful career in Alaska politics. For the sake of all of us this story should end with a loss for them on November 4. All of the challenges mentioned in the article are real. Not the least of which is the what happens to our former ally Pakistan now shooting at our troops. Almost 40 trillion in corporate and private debt. That means if only 10% defaults we need 4 trillion not 700 billion to bail out the system. The question now is to contemplate the mean spirit within us and ask whether or not our rich diversity will prevent the center from holding society together. The sky will not fall if Mc\Cain wins because events now will shape human behavior not the the other way around. He will change and look more like a Democrat once the takes office. He will likely have a Democratically controlled Congress so to my Demorcatic friends vote to prevent but remain engaged if the opposite happens. Cheers to all.

Enough of this hogwash about liberals don't like this woman because she stands for truth. Here is my question to the religious right group that's pushing Palin. Would anyone of these pastors at these mega churches give up their post to let Palin run their church? Never. Yet, they want to heap her total inexperience on this country, simply to push their zealot beliefs on the country.

Gibberish is not the word to describe the answers she gave in these interviews. They are incoherent, mixed up talking points.

A high school student would have formulated better sentences than Ms. Palin did in her interviews. There are some women out there that say they will vote for Palin because she is just like them. Just like them? Here is my question, if she is just like you, do you think you possess the qualities to become vice president? This is not mommy time out at the playground. The country is in dire straits, and no way do we need a novice being one heartbeat away from the oval office. I am a woman and I resent the fact that John McCain chose Sarah Palin solely for the fact that he thought she could appeal to other women. Well, she does not appeal to me, sorry.

And again, stop this nonesense about liberial don't like her because she tells the truth. Almost every word out of her mouth since she got into this campaign have been lies -- outright lies. Give me a break.

  • Posted By: storm7 @ 09/27/2008 8:05:45 PM

you know, I find it striking that those on the right keep blaming the "liberal media". So basicially, what you are saying, is that americans are so stupid that they allow the media, to control their thoughts? Is that really where you want to go with that same old tired line? Not to mention that that "liberal media" is owned by corporations, you know, those corporations who support republicans heavily so they dont face regulations...want to run down the list? Palin so far is an insult, and she makes mccain a liar when he says he puts his country first...please, dont insult the rest of america.
