Did I ever read fareed saying the same thing to Barack Obama asking to save himself. After all Barack himself claims his experience as a community organiser, who left things much the same after helping funnel a lot of taxpayer money and his running for president as his main qualifications. Did anyone check his college grades to see if he should have even qualified to go to law school and how did someone at his stage in college get to be able to afford to fly to Pakistan. Then there is the question of Saudi funding his law school costs. Nowhere do I hear any of these either addressed or debunked. Not to mention his campiagn trying to intimidate TV and Radio stations . Fareed..please get out of the tank. Your own editor Meacham, said that the medias favorable coverage of liberal candidates gives a 10 to 15 percent boost to the democrat candidate. Lets see what happens. If Obama loses then America is racist. The media certainly wont entertain the possibility that he is an empty suit.

Very thoughtful commentatry, Mr. Zakaria. With the VP debate looming, I wonder: will the show go on? Will she step down before or after the debate? Or will she continue on as McCain's running mate? The most frightening prospect of all is that if she does carry on, McCain will still hold his base at over ~ 44% of the American voting population. Anti-intellectualism is the new patriotism.

Great article! As a republican I was on fence until Sarah Palin was chosen, I was stunned, my friends were stunned! I knew within a week of listen to the same scripted stump speech that McCain was all about himself. I left the fence and immediately jumped on the Obama wagon, most of my friends are voting for Senator Obama, at least he has been tested, has run what is being call the best campaign in world history, and no denying the man is extremely intelligent, he has a top notch education. Those right wingers attempting to compare him with Palin are simply hate mongers with an agenda, because quite simply there is no comparison. We are not buying their spin. Polls are beginning to shift and my prediction is many many republicans who are open minded, moderate and love their country will cross over and vote for the Obama/Biden ticket. We must as americans face the fact that McCain is 72 years old, with a history of a serious cancer, the probability that he will die in office is obvious, and we cannot take the chance that palin might ascend to that office. That is picked her is an absolute disgrace and an open window to see how he will govern, no thought process, erractic moves that are self serving! Response americans must face the truth and send McCain into retirement - where he belongs. The right wingers freelancing the web posting lies and hate about sentor Obama must realize the world has changed and America must turn the page, like it or not. This is from a previously proud republican who loves this country!

Another biased article by Newsweek, the most liberal magazine in America.

Actually, The Nation is the best magazine for liberals like myself. Religious zealots will support this poor excuse for energy in the campaign even though her closed, small and limited life experiences has left her unqualified for any position on the national level. Come to Alaska...see our limited gene pool...gasp! My vote goes to the smart guy: Obama. He will surround himself with qualified, large minds.

I don't want to ride Palin's insane holy rollercoaster for one day, let alone four years.

The issue with Sarah Palin has never been about her qualifications or her nutty beliefs. It has been about McCain's decision-making capabilities. He obviously didn't take the measure of the woman, he merely relied on his instincts on a brief meeting. What we have is an imbecile who inherently trusts the capabilities of anyone on his side, and refuses to even engage with those he has the slightest reason to distrust (Spain anyone?). It is not that Palin is not ready and that replacing her could make the McCain ticket whole again. McCain is the one who has proven he is utterly incapable of being President.

She is a pretty coddled barracuda / pitbull. I mean, if she shattered the glass ceiling, she has taken that glass and enveloped herself in it. Or more precisely, McCain and the Republicavemen have done that.

So, playing it safe and training Palin has turned into not playing at all. McCain is playing with her and playing safe for himself is what really seems to be happening. Palin must have no idea how she is being used. The Repbulicavemen are hiding her inexperience and lack of knowledge and ability under her own skirt. She must completely not see that, and they hope the press will create counter issues to avoid the real ones - sexism and the like. And McCain and Bush seem to be hiding under her skirt too. Of course, Bush had to come out when the economy fell apart, otherwise, Bush has been MIA.

If the Democrats ever tried to do something like this, they would never hear the end of it. In fact, the Democrats would never do it, because it is immoral to say she is competent to be President. She might be okay as a ceremonial VP, but she is too close to being the President and she indeed is unfit for command. She is the turkey to Dan's Quayle.

Palin???s star has pretty much faded. It is turning into a Black Hole. She is not what she is made out to be nor is she what she appears to be. In fact, when all is said and done, she is just a curvaceous hood ornament on McCain???s ???Lying with a Straight Face??? Express ??????

It is hard to believe within the whole Republican party Sen. McCain couldn't find a more qualified running mate. I question Sen. McCain's judgement after this choice. How we Have her in the WH with so much going on at home and overseas? McCain judgement is shakey at best on foriegn issues at it is. He has clearly taken side on the Russian-Georgian War, the last thing he needs is a Vice President that doesn't even know that Georgia is a country in Europe, not the state.

She might be a nice lady, but I find it hard to believe that she is the most qualified lady in the republican party. I was debating who to vote for until they made their VP choice, Obama's was clearl better. He actually thought about his weakness, before he made his choice. What in the H*ll was McCain thinking of, besides the fact that she was a woman. Does he think that the American female voters are the stupid?

    Wake Up, America

Fareed, for you to use this language speaks a lot. I do not remember you saying such things, which may sound harsh, before. I have to admit though, Palin's interview on CBS was downright scary, I am not sure even a hardcore republican can put hand on his heart and disagree with you. I have respected John McCain, but this campaign he has shown his erratic behavior....but more importantly, a person who say "country first"...I am starting to question that.

It seems apparent that McCain picked Palin simply because she's a woman (even though she is pitifully un-informed) as he seemed to think this choice would pull more women voters to his side. That, in it'self, is insulting to every woman in this great land! Women are not interchangable. And simply because a woman is a mother, does not qualify her for the high post of VP! We need to put all the blame on McCain for his ill-backed choice. What kind of judgment does this display? A very poor judgement, at best, and insulting to women in general. There are so very many really smart women he could have chosen, it's a mystery why he chose Palin.
Like another comment made here, I was terribly embarrassed for Palin in her interview with Couric! How in the world did Couric keep from bursting into laugher!!!!
McCain is in a no-win situation with Palin. If she stays, he's damned and if she quits, he's damned. But he deserves it as far as I'm concerned. However, I do believe she should crawl back to Alaska and watch for Russian airplanes. Or perhaps she would plan to get in her plane and shoot Russains from the air instead of wolves!

Just ran across this link as well. The rest of you just don't have to worry too much about Russian fighter jets flying into your airspace, but Alaskans have been living with this for years.

So she juggled some syntax...You're over the top Zakaria, completely exaggerating because you are in the Tank for Obama. You have put your objectivity away and now are breathing the MSM over-adulation of a radical, a mere Lefty, who was prepared to withdraw from Iraq when it would have meant failure and defeat. I wonder why your former teacher Kissinger is sure she can do the job? He just has doubts about you now!

"So she juggled some syntax..." "Juggled some syntax"? Are you serious? She juggled and scrambled entire sentences and paragraphss. I honestly had no idea what the hell she was trying to say and I was honestly listening.

I can't wait for the VP debate! It is going to be the comedy event of the century. It will be a gold mine for comics and pundits for years to come.

Palin's interview with Couric reminds me of the beauty queen from South Carolina who explained why so many people couldn't find Iraq on a map.

    • Posted By: Dailyfare @ 09/27/2008 5:07:31 PM

How can we be sure that this is not a set-up? Joe Biden will expect her to be a lightweight, but she comes out swinging.

      • Posted By: TheVigil @ 09/27/2008 5:38:27 PM

She's not going to be judged according to whether or not she "surprises" people, not most of them. She'll be expected to display a high level of competence throughout. "You can debate but you can't give an interview" is not going to win this election. Presidents and vice presidents are often interviewed and have to articulate their vision for the country's future.

Palin's choice was a matter of identity politics. It's a major theme in this election. It's overshadowed policy for most of the election - but the economic collapse is throwing things back on track with a fury. I think it's completely wonderful that it happened when it did, and not five months later. I feel like the focus has been thrown on policy for the first time in the race. Americans want to hear who's got a plan, for the first time in a long time, instead of voting for the person who most resembles them. Gives me a lot of hope.

I think Palin's choice may come back to haunt McCain as the issues become the theme of the election again. She's not ready.

Putting the word "radical" in ALL CAPS doesn't make it so. Barack's middle name is Hussein. What of it? Barrry was his name before he changed it. Your point? What exactly is your definition of an "elitist"? As far as I can tell, an "elitist" seems to be anyone who disagrees with Republican talking points and those that don't need to engage in name calling to make an argument.

  • Posted By: summer1216 @ 09/27/2008 5:34:49 PM

We don't need to worry about her becoming vice president (or president) because that is the losing ticket. There are weeks left before the election, but the obvious choice for Obama is already being made.

We'll see what happens in the VP debate. Based upon Sarah's performances so far, many people are starting to lose the faith. However, for the record, what seemed like gibberish in the Couric interview (her reference to Putin and Alaskan airspace) is anything but: http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/358368.html.

I was unaware of the fact that Putin had ordered Russian jets to start, once again, testing our airspace over Alaska. Were any of the commenters here aware of this important international development? Seems like being Governor of Alaska does offer a perspective on Russia that those of us down here can't appreciate. And also please note - Alaska has extensive trade relations with Russia and Canada, and it's possible that from Sarah's perspective, she simply can't believe that the rest of us don't "get" what Alaskans get on a visceral level - that their proximity to both Russia and Canada, combined with Alaska's extremely unique economic and geographic conditions, makes them uniquely sensitive to international affairs. Just some sites for thought: http://www.commerce.state.ak.us/oed/student_info/learn/russianheritage.htm; http://www.gov.state.ak.us/trade/2005/partners/russia_export2005.php. It's a different world up there in Alaska, and it's proximity to Russia is something that is part and parcel of their everyday lives in a way that the rest of us simply don't understand. We'll see how Sarah does in explaining that to us over the next few weeks.

so what has sarah palin done to confront the growing menace of russian aggression into alaskan airspace? if anything at all, somebody tell her, she doesn't seem to have any examples to provide

I can see the moon from my house, I am now an expert on inter-planetary affairs. HaHa, this lady is a complete joke

Palin is way out of her league and over her head in discerning any of the major issues. Everything has to be given to her as "talking points" and it would appear she has an inability of thinking on her own.
